Tbh his character is surprisingly complex. He is creative and clearly cares about his sister and her friends (and ofc their show) but also needs space to be an adult and sometimes comes off as almost like a single dad archetype lol
He's an older brother in his 20s stuck taking care after his younger sister. Yeah he cares about her but he still hasn't been able to explore being a bachelor etc.
Yeah I love Spencer’s character, especially since I’m the oldest in my family and recently in my 20’s so I sympathize with his story a lil more now. Jerry Trainer just does such a good job with the character it’s a shame I haven’t seen him in many other things
Can we talk about how great Spencer was as a parental figure? Yes, he did crazy and sometimes dangerous artwork. Yes, he got frustrated with a lack of privacy. Yes, he decided to put spaghetti on tacos. But he also made a home for his little sister when their parents left them alone. He sheltered Freddie from his borderline abusive and incredibly invasive mother. He protected Sam from a really shitty home life. Spencer gets written off as this wacky, funny character but he was a young guy who was a father figure to three kids and did a fucking fantastic job making sure they turned out to be decent human beings. A king 👑
He was literally the only reason I watched the show. I loved the episodes when he and Gibby bonded over artwork, because it's some of the few times you see them both really happy
@@d4rksonic474 Wow I didn't realize how Spencer was a father figure to everyone in this show... Now that I think about it, remember how he almost became Gibby's step-father?
Trovon Fincher besides that, never even asking if they can come in. Like just asking if it’s ok to come in would be perfectly fine, but they just walk in like they own the place.
To be fair, everyone does waltz right in like they own the place. And Spencer's probably the one who pays rent in his massive 3-story studio apartment.
You know when you think about it, Freddy and Sam hanging out at Spencer’s house is darker than you’d thing. Freddy’s mom is crazy and from what we can tell Sam’s household isn’t much better. This apartment was probably the closest thing to a home the two had.

Real. A lot of the people in the comments are saying he should get a lock as if he doesn't already have 2 on the front door. It remains unlocked because Spencer hears when Sam talks about how bad her home life is. He also knows firsthand what Freddie's mom is like. It's annoying, stop it!" while passive aggressive is like the thing Spencer does here where he doesn't say he's angry but instead makes sarcastic or sassy comments about it that still convey the feeling that he's annoyed.
Ok maybe I’m looking too much into it but, this show was honestly pretty dark? It’s always played for laughs but Sam’s home life was pretty fucking terrible: there are constant jokes about how her mom never feeds her and her mom’s car is catching on fire and stuff, and all her other family members are in prison. I think there was an episode where she went to prison too? I think there are a few episodes where we actually see Sam and her mother interact but I don’t remember them lmao. Freddie’s mother is so crazy and overprotective it got to the point where he was so overwhelmed by it he once felt the need to move out and buy his own apartment while he was in high school. Honestly, it’s no wonder they spend most of their time at Carly’s place, it’s the closest thing to a safe and healthy home they’ve ever had, and it’s probably why Spencer didn’t get as angry as most adults would when Carly’s always bringing her friends over without further notice.
Sam probably took her pain out on Freddie & Gibby in the earlier seasons, she would never hurt Carly though. Sam calmed down a lot as the seasons went on but she was still likely hiding a lot of hurt. Maybe if it wasn't a nickelodeon show it would have went into deeper topics
@@stephaniebeaton and then I think she was legitimately happy once she and Freddy became a thing but Carly screwed it up. Call Freddy spoiled but he's trying to be his own person while clearly still caring for his mother while Carly is seen as a narcissist.
@@SayaaNara The only thing I don't like is how Carly always rejected Freddie earlier on but when he started dating Sam, got lowkey jealous. I don't think Freddie is spoiled but his mom is way to overprotective.. She cares about her son deeply but sometimes its too much. She prob doesn't want Freddie to leave 'cause odds are is his dad likely did
@@SayaaNara honestly, all 3 of the kids have really rough home lives. I don’t think it’s ever revealed what happened to Carly’s mom or how old she was when her dad left. Spencer, although he obviously clearly cares deeply for Carly, isn’t the most responsible, which is honestly to be expected by someone in their 20’s. In fact, I’d even say Carly is the most responsible person in the show which is why she might be seen as narcissistic by the audience. She’s a kid who doesn’t really understand how the world works but she tries her very best to keep her friends together who are constantly at each other’s throats, run her very own web show, keep her household stable when her brother is having all these crazy experiments 24/7, all while trying to be a normal high school kid. It’s no wonder she’s seen as a narcissist but when you really analyze it she might be the best character. I realize this is a fucking Nickelodeon show but honestly if they went deeper with these characters I feel like it could be pretty interesting lmao
Sam would have probably not cared and still went to their house and Freddie would probably start living with them for a short period of time to get rid of his mom for a while because his mom is over protected.
Everyone's talking about the new comments, but can we just take a minute to acknowledge the fact that everyone's just walking in and out of Spencer's home without his permission????
because thats good writing. And, sadly its what sitcoms are SUPPOSED to be but never are, situational comedy. The situation is that the goofy kids do a comedy show on the internet, and the brother is forced to deal with it. All of it is very natural in premise.
Carly: “Sam and Freddie are here.” Spencer: “When aren’t they here?” Sam: “Good point.” Freddie: “So true.” - Spencer: “Woah, I almost didn’t recognize you guys *not sitting on my couch* .”

I nevere realize back then how handsome spencer was
Exactly👏 my👏 thoughts👏
Yalls wearing beer goggles in quarantine again?? 🤔
Yea (no homo)
You mean Crazy Steve? 🤣😂
That was the point
Let’s be real, spencer carried the show
So we're just gonna forget about... all the other characters? This I actually one of those rare shows where every character is chaotic in a good way.
I realize this is a fucking Nickelodeon show but honestly if they went deeper with these characters I feel like it could be pretty interesting lmao
i fuckin love iCarly
I never noticed how bothered he was by it😭
No one did.
@@KyleRayner12 A lot of people did
This is a completely different show as an adult... Spencer is justified in every one of these
You forget Spencer is a man who pays taxes and rent. He has every right to criticize Freddie, Sam, and company, just walking in.
And hes a freelance artist who doesnt make a lot of money
Spencer would have loved quarantines that kept everyone out his apartment.
They'd probably still come over. Sam just wouldn't care and benson's mom seems like the type to think the virus was a hoax
@@CreepyConnor no way. Mrs Benson would've prevented Freddy from even leaving his apartment. She would be scared of Freddy getting it
@@CreepyConnor Freddy would’ve never been a loud to leave the house
Sam would have probably not cared and still went to their house and Freddie would probably start living with them for a short period of time to get rid of his mom for a while because his mom is over protected.
@@majesticmo5048 she probably wouldn’t even let Freddy leave his room tbh
Its kind of sad, both Freddie and Sam have toxic home lives and stay with Carly to avoid it.
I’m going to ignore that and just laugh.
Everyone's talking about the new comments, but can we just take a minute to acknowledge the fact that everyone's just walking in and out of Spencer's home without his permission????
yeah, no wonder he’s no passive aggressive towards them haha. i would be so pissed.
Maybe he should have locked his doors lol
Why does it feel like he's not a character in a sitcom, but rather a normal person caged in one ?
because thats good writing. And, sadly its what sitcoms are SUPPOSED to be but never are, situational comedy. The situation is that the goofy kids do a comedy show on the internet, and the brother is forced to deal with it. All of it is very natural in premise.
I understand Spencer’s pain, he’s basically paying for everyone to live under his roof 😂
“look at my lawn” is one of the best line deliveries to grace television
1:33 just doin the lords work
i never actually realized how passive aggressive and annoyed he would get when carly’s friends walk in 😭😭
Saiki and Spencer could relate to each other
omg they would
@@zo__glassss yare yare
Carly: “Sam and Freddie are here.”
Spencer: “When aren’t they here?”
Sam: “Good point.”
Freddie: “So true.”

Spencer: “Woah, I almost didn’t recognize you guys *not sitting on my couch* .”
I didnt realize it but theres never any scenes that shows that he really likes Sam and Freddie other than possibly counting just being on icarly
Lil' Lonk
I never noticed either! Yeah, I can’t remember him really liking them outside of their livestream. He seems to only like Gibby.
@@ashlitious6624 Linda funny, as a kid I always thought they were all close friends. Crazy how that works, seeing stuff when you're older lol
Lil' Lonk
I definitely get that, it’s so strange to see things differently after awhile.
Lil' Lonk nah, he only put up with them for Carly’s sake.
This man really should've kept his door locked.
He did, but Sam kind of broke the lock, lol
@@amarylliscinth Oh yeah, I remember that

Bro these people are like the sims that walk into your house and leave plates everywhere and watch TV for hours.
Am I the only one that never noticed how much Spencer’s hates Freddy and Sam always being at his house? At my age now I know how he feels...
jerry trainor must've been a fun person to work with
Yknow, this is kinda self-inflicted, seeing as Spencer just never bothers to lock his own door
Yeah, man really shouldn't be complaining when there are very visible locks on that door.
I think sam cut the lock before
Yeah I don't think a locked door will stop Sam
As a kid, I laughed.
As an adult, I would have kicked them out and told them to f off.
I understand Spencer.
Are we gonna just ignore T-Bo’s MASTERFUL CodeSwitching 😭
it was beautiful
Can that really count as code switching? He was never ghetto, just blunt and loud.
@@BuffyunaTV code switching doesn’t inherently have to mean you started off ghetto. Code switching is changing the way you talk to more fit in with those around you. Does that make sense?
@@dominicpalmer2637 thanks for explaining
@@dominicpalmer2637 ah yeah i do that
I feel bad for Spencer. He tried to quickly become an adult and parental figure to his sister and her friends, but everyone kept walking all over him, sometimes literally.
For real, all the while making the money from building intricate art pieces at a rapid pace.
i've never thought about it like that...ow

@@admin.slayerenryu truu, it's just the fact I never really picked up on it as a kid when I watched this show tbh. Now that I'm older, I would react the same way
@@lyonchen2024 Same.
I love how Spencer’s bit is doing random shit and yelling at people for casually strolling into his house
“Wow I almost didn’t recognize you guys not sitting on my couch”
