The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

The legend Judith Durham. One of the best voices in history. Keep it simple.
Last month was the 60th anniversary of the first performance by the Seekers with these band members. Three of the four remain active. But sadly, Judith Durham passed away in August, just missing the anniversary milestone. Judith had the voice of an angel and seeing this performance is a reminder of how special she and the band were during their magical run in the 60s. Thanks so much for posting this performance.
Her voice was so powerful and drop dead gorgeous
So sad to hear of her passing.
This song was all over the radio in the 60s.
Australia and the US spent the 60's locked in combat in the Vietnam War while the Soviet Union marched into Czechoslavakia with tanks to squash pro-democracy protests, Chinese Communists murdered 4 million of their own people in the Cultural Revolution, the Cuban Missile Crisis nearly ended in nuclear Armageddon while JFK, RFK and MLK were all assassinated. Not sure how much "Magic" came out of the 1960's.
Also a song title of the movie.
What a song, What a voice. Miss you Judith.
Judith you are/were one in a trillion. A goddess of goodness and so encouraging with your amazing voice, to all of us. What a breath of fresh air!
What a beautiful voice she had. That song is so upbeat it brings a smile to my face.
Definitely...RIP Judith
One of my favorite songs
The Seekers were always spot on with their live performances. It was just so natural. RIP Judith Durham. What a voice!
And she annunciated every syllable of that song with any effort! Perfection 🎶
Without
I honestly thought Judith had one of the purest voices ever. Still remembered and loved. England, March, 2024.
As Judith sings, she isn't just doing the song, she is also looking at the audience and watching their enjoyment. So relaxed. She hits notes effortlessly.
Seekers made the world better back in the days…
Welll dear Ed, the "youngsters" are still here enjoying this so very very much :)
It wouldn't have been the '60s without the Seekers. Always upbeat and uplifting with a folky sound of their own.
Happy 60s music 🎶🎵
Got to love Ed Sullivan. In all my years of hearing musical groups being introduced, I’ve never had them described as a combination. Combo yes, combination no.
Ed had trouble relating to all the youngsters.
One of the marquee 60's songs. So awesome! What a voice she had!
Happy Heavenly birthday to Judith on what would've been her 80th birthday today. 😇
The Seekers are truly a national treasure. I had the pleasure of attending their concert 10 years ago during their 50th Anniversary tour.
Australia missed an opportunity to declare July 3, 2023 Judith Durham Day throughout the country, and to hold a massive open-air concert at the Myers Music Bowl.
One of the most beautiful voices ever!
In a tie with Karen Carpenter or no?
I love Karen but Judith is way better
@@blakjack3053i love judith more, karen also ha e a super beautiful voice but mostly charpenter songs are boring
Judith have more range and angelic tune
@@jayanirmala-lo3vp I agree
She’s singing with the angels now. RIP Judith.
Trivia Tidbit: Written by Dusty Springfield's brother Tom! He died on 27 July 2022 at age 88. The lyrics are by Jim Dale although they vary a bit in versions of the song. Tom also wrote "I'll never find another you" for the group.
Tom Springfield died ten days before Judith Durham, a tremendous coincidence considering they lived in different countries and had no contact. However, I think in some way their souls were deeply related. Tom wrote several songs for Judith voice and stopped writing songs altogether after the seekers broke up.
The Seekers were the BEST! I was so saddened to learn of Judith’s passing. She and “the boys” still bring a lot of joy to my life. I am 71 years old. ❤
Same here honey, they(Seekers) just keep showing up on my playlist!
Funny advice they give the title girl. Buy some hip clothes. Starting in the 1950s youth in Britain had money to spend on clothing. Most paid their parents some rent as there was a housing shortage after the war. Live with yer mum, but have a scooter and cool duds (the mods). Otherwise be a rocker, have a motorcycle and a different version of sharp clothes and live with yer mum.
68, today. They were the best of the best in a groups harmonizing, in my humble opinion. It’s therapy, to listen.
@@ivangranger8494 I 💯 agree! And their music was so pure! Not a lot of hype. Also, their music was good, decent music. Even after they all went their separate ways in time, they were still good and decent. ❤️❤️
@@vikkibyington3066 ✨🕊✨They were a Blessed, gift. ✨🕊✨
The unseen musician here, an unsung hero of sorts, is the drummer.
There is something just so attractive and so appealing about Judith Durham. RIP my dear.
How come I don't remember what I had for dinner last night, but I remember every word in the lyrics to this song from the 1960's when I was a kid? 🤣
Because we all love the Seekers and this song!
Most likely last night's meal was not as memorable as this song. I remember the Seekers singing this song in an outdoor amphitheatre.
It was an academy award nominated song, beaten by Born Free!
@@michaelhayden725 Aww, well, I liked that song too. My parents took us kids to the drive in movie theater when Born Free premiered. 😊
Then fair enough@@michaelhayden725
I have a vivid memory of being a very little boy of four or five years old dancing to this while it played on a diner jukebox while my parents clapped and egged me on. I hope I never lose it.
I didn't know of her passing,,,,,, till just now,,,,,, My world just got a little smaller and sadder,, RIP dear angel.
no voice auto tuning no over dubbing no lip sync just pure talent beautiful
Australia,s gift to the world...The Seekers
I remember hearing this on the radio in 1967, being five years old, riding in the back of my grandmas Ford Falcon headed to the shopping mall and this song playing on the radio. It reminded me of her sister, my aunt Georgie. to this day, nothing has changed when hearing this song. The only difference is everything else is all gone.
1967. Montréal, Québec. Une exposition mémorable pour tous. Tout comme les jeux olympiques de Vancouver. Nous ne reverrons de si beaux événements internationaux.
When musicians had class.
And now we have lizzo
Judith Durham….a great voice. Not many bands with a double bass
Never missed an episode of the Ed Sullivan show from 1962 till it ended …
I want to see more, of both "Ed Sullivan " & his earlier " Toast of The Town" variety show, since it ran for over 20 years.
I watch his show at my hunting cabin on Decades. It's one if the 5 channels I have
One of the best performance. Rest Easy Judith! Discovered this band since 2018 and maybe wish I did earlier. The Australians, Brits and even the Canadians can make oldies too just like us Americans. 💯💯
She's a doll with a fantastic voice.
I didn't know for many years that they are an Aussie group !!
This song was later used in American TV ads.
This is one of the greatest pop songs ever! Thank you for posting this.
From the Film of the same name.
Wow. An incredible live performance by the group; very natural, relaxed and paced 'just right'. The backing arrangement by the orchestra is spot on too. Bravo~!
Ex's orchestra was second to none,as evidenced by his catalog of work.
Yes, I had the same reaction. I though it would be synced, and maybe some of the track was, but for the most part it was "live" and wonderful. You can tell they were a little excited/nervous, but settled in nicely, because they knew how good they were..
Yes, so good. And Ed's orchestra swings it just a little bit..
Never a better blend of voices. Never a better lead singer. Every member a first rate musician.
A dear friend in high school was our featured twirler and performed in a pep rally to this song. Great memories.
Judith so young and fresh faced and 😍.
They were wonderful and how excited they were to be on Ed Sullivan and seen by millions.
There are few things in this world I love more than pop songs from the 1960's.
I thought Ed insisted their guests play live. That was a lot of sound for such little equipment. None the less, I love Judith’s voice!
RIP dear lady ❤
Most likely, there were additional musicians behind the curtain. The electric rhythm guitar and the drums are clear, for instance. The four group members in front were surely playing and singing live, though.
Right @@glennhecker4422
I loved this song although I was nor allowed to see the movie till I was around 16
Lol your parents sound even stricter than mine. 😁
@@jillkjv3816 my father was strict Catholic dresses had to be 2 fingers below the knee not allowed to wear makeup till I was 16 not allowed to date till I was 16 I graduated in 77 it was difficult I remember when middie skirts came out my father liked them so much he said he would buy me 10 of them if I wore them every day I refused half way between my knee and ankle
@@pamczech5984 Wow. Those were the days!
They made the bad old days a lot better. They sure did
I sing this chorus to my cat every morning!
Her name is George. George Kittle. Go Niners!
But I do sing this to her 😁
Such an effortless sounding voice.
She was a first rate pianist and thought of maybe being an opera singer.
Even though I was getting into rock and roll I still loved that song❤❤❤
Had a mad crush on her at age 10. Still do come to think of it.
I love this song by the Seekers. I haven't seen the movie yet. Taped at the Montreal Expo 1967. 1967 was a great year for music. It had the summer of love❤ and To Sir, With Love. I love the movie too. Thank you Ed Sullivan! Much appreciated for having them on.
Damn, that girl could sing.
Judith Durham, such an incredible voice and talent
AND PRETTY.
I think the Seekers broke the generation gap and could be enjoyed by anyone. And yet, there was Ed Sullivan saying how they were a treat for the "youngsters".
Wow! Superman is playing the bass!!!
Athol Guy. He worked at J. Walter Thompson in Melbourne, where Judith became a secretary in 1962. On her first day, he invited her to join the fledgling Seekers at a Melbourne coffeehouse that night. The rest is history.
@@smwca123 Merci pour l'histoire.
Wonderful! When music was music...
May 67, Something for the youngsters 😅
Damn they played this song a lot in the sixties.
This is magic signed by Tom Springfield and performed by the best.
Every time I see the Seekers, I can’t look at Judith without thinking how much she resembles Jennifer Lawrence. She was a very beautiful woman with an angelic voice.
While I wouldn't want to rank them, I count myself blessed to have seen some of the greatest female singers of all time perform live. My list includes Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell, Annie Lennox, Ann Wilson, Pat Benatar, Dusty Springfield, Anita Carter, Carole King, Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Raitt, Aretha, Nina Simone, k.d. Lang and in more recent times Pink, Florence Welch & Lady Gaga but I'd put Judith Durham up there with any of them. She had an extraordinary voice.
That's a very impressive list and I can't match it,but I'll definitely agree with your assessment of Judith Durham. This live performance on Ed's show just proved it.
I would love to have seen half the people on your list and while the Seekers fame came before I was born, their music is just as good today as it was then.
I would put Mama Cass in there too.
Judith Durham died August 5, 2022. She was 79 years old. What a lovely woman!
@@johneggerton2248 I would have if I'd seen her live, but I didn't get that chance.
I think that this was their second time on the Sullivan Show. I recall an earlier appearance filmed in black and white! Still sounds great.
Its totally cool that the Seekers weren't lip syncing a recording of their song.
We need more music like this....I was 8 years old
Such a treasure. 💔
THE MAGNIFICENT JUDY DURHAM. WHAT A VOICE !!.
This song was my favorite as a young teenager.
They all look so young.
Remember when the family would gather around the TV Sunday nights to watch Ed ? What programs do we have now where we can do that ? Or would we if possible ?
Judith is singing with the angels now....
This was at Montréal Expo 67 and also the first satelitte transmission from usa to Australia and others countries!
Her voice is so crystalline. amazing.
RIP Judith. Thanks for all the music.
Born in 1962, "Georgy Girl", "Downtown" and "Sgt. Peppers" are my earliest memories of music. Amazing to think "Georgy Girl" and "Sgt. Pepper's" were released one year apart.
I'm a 1962 also and I totally hear you. Also We Five's "You Were On My Mind" bring me back to my earliest music memories.
A fab group. The boys were very protective of our beautiful Judith.
Love the mix on this. Judith's voice dominates, as it should, but just enough. The background vocs and instruments are in perfect balance.
Sounds of the sixties and this is one of the songs of the 60s🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
So innocent and beautiful. How music has changed!
All of Sulivan's acts were live; sink or swim. No applause signals, no canned laughs.
I used to play this record every time I want to see my brother in Australia I loved him so much I miss him every time I heard this record I cry I loved him so much I miss him every time I heard this record I cry
Condolences😢 Georgie Girl will always honor your brother's memory. One of my fav songs.
Love Judith. Love Seekers. Love Sullivan. What's not to love?
I remember that song as a little girl of about 4 or 6 years old. I would always sing along whenever I heard it on the radio. RIP Judith Durham.
Voice of an Angel.
Sublime voice, Judith.
01/05/2023,,A Favorite Song when I was a lot younger!! Still Love It🌹✌🏼
While not their BEST single, Judith Durham aptly demonstrates why she was a magnificent a singer as any female in competing Britain with dominating voice control. I've always felt the dark haired guitar player at far left one of the handsomest men in Pop music.
I entirely agree.
The guy on the left is Keith Potger.
Thank you.
Big Song on the Radio 📻 when it first came out ‼️👍🇺🇲🌞🕊️
i loved this song growing up...
How amazingly quick times flies by.
beautiful innocent music. Nothing like today.
Many thanks for posting this clip. Great song. Terrific group. Wonderful female lead singer. Her distinctive voice was the secret to the group's success.
Judith did it all despite suffering from bronchiectasis her whole adult life. She was born with asthma and at age four she caught measles, which left her with a life-long chronic lung disease, bronchiectasis. Durham died from that disease at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne on 5 August 2022, at age 79.(Source: Wikipedia). It's an amazing story that she was able to sing like that!
@@MostlyBrenda I agree. I have a DVD copy of her 2003 Concert at the Royal Festival Hall on her 60th birthday. Her voice was in fine form that night. She certainly was a wonderful human being as well as a terrific singer.
Classic! Takes my mind back and makes me feel young again at least for a few minutes.
Just like me!❤
Was teased as a young child when this song first came out, mid 1960’s, but I loved the song. Has always been a favorite ❤️ and a great performance by the Seekers. 2:18
thank you Australia
Timeless!.. this song is immortal.. RIP Judith Durham 🙏🎶
Great to see this talented group on the Ed Sullivan Show.
Ah, what a great song and flawless performance. Just wonderful
And now something for the youngsters.....Thanks Ed
I love her voice. RIP
Nice to see a real live presentation. You could count on old Ed to make sure they performed their hits live if they were on his show.
Takes me back to the 60s, a much simpler and happy time for me, and puts a smile on my face.
Beautiful song, but don’t hear it very often.
Judith and the Seekers were absolutely spectacular. I noticed that the unseen drummer was quite good, too, whoever you were.
Perfection
Always liked this song
back when god blessed with a voice true love & talent
