American Bandstand 1967 -Top 10 - Georgy Girl, The Seekers

  • Airdate: February 4, 1967
The Seekers’ biggest hit peaks at #2 today. “Georgy Girl“ would be kept out of the #1 spot for 2 straight weeks by the Monkees’ “I’m a Believer“. While it never made it to #1 on Billboard it did hit #1 in The Seekers’ home country of Australia. It was also #1 on Cashbox and, of course, it is #1 today on Bandstand (to the delight of the dancers based on their reaction as the song is revealed). “Georgy Girl“ was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song from the 1966 movie also titled “Georgy Girl“, starring Lynn Redgrave and James Mason, but lost to the theme to “Born Free”.
Our dancers today are: Jeff Stein (twirling his fingers in the air sarcastically) with Marcel Poitier and Olivia Favela to his right at 0:30, Danny Lawyer at 0:33, Robin Morris at 0:35, Frankie Riggilio at 0:44, Stan Soburn & Lori Montgomery at 0:48, Marcia Silverman at 1:02, Wes Menasco at 1:18, Debbie Kane & Jim Miranda chatting with Dick at 1:49, Rick Moreno at 1:56, Jodie Briskin at 2:13, and Robin Miller & Billy Maloney at 2:27. On the riser at 1:21 is Frank Vanderpuil and the lovely Peggy Waggoner (watch for her holding Frank’s thumb while they dance….adorable!)
There isn’t a clear shot of him during this song, but Don Sanuskar can also be seen dancing with Roni Menacker at various times (0:44 and 2:15) back by the “Top 10” sign and Dick’s podium wearing his light (Rango!) sweater vest.
…..And at the 39th Academy Awards in about 2 months (April 10, 1967) The Seekers were not available to perform “Georgy Girl“ so Mitzi Gaynor performed a Broadway-styled version with backup dancers. After she was done, the applause went on so long they had to finally cut to commercial and they were still applauding when they came back. Love it or hate it, it is something to see. (it can be found in several places on TH-cam)

It’s the end of 2023, I’m 46, born approximately 10 years after this aired. I’m at the peak of stress and success in my career. Sometimes, when work is especially stressful, I look this up and watch it again. It reminds me that once, we were all young, impressionable, happy. Specifically it reminds me of seeing my parents, then my own age today, dancing in the living room to this song. I realize this all was an idealistic representation of American life against the backdrop of the Vietnam War and other major social issues.
But, for 2 min and 40 seconds, this takes us all back to being between 15 and 19, no matter our generation. For this, I’m thankful.
Wishing you all happiness in the journey.

J Landon isn’t it just, pitch perfect, never heard her sing a bum note ever. I was a big fan of The Seekers and their harmonies were tight but it was Judy Durham that did it for me, her and Dusty Springfield, my other crush could turn their hand to anything put in front of them, the old saying they could sing a telephone directory was true. Dusty’s brother was the Seekers manager and wrote Georgy Girl for the film of the same name starring Lynn Redgrave. He wrote many more hits for the as well. I feel all melancholy hearing these songs of my youth, it was a grand time, and I avoided the drugs👍😂😂😂😂😂

I'm a jeans and teeshirt guy myself (I live in Houston-works 300 days a year) but it's nice to see the kids dressed up. It adds to the occasion. I always dress for the opera. It's a sign of respect to the performers. A lot of people dress like they just mowed the lawn (same thing for going to church). An attitude of "you should just appreciate me showing up!". People with that attitude should stay home. Love Judith's clarion voice.

Today`s pop Music is made to all sound the same so people will buy it. It`s mostly written by only three song writers. The Music Industry today like Film is geared just to make money...

Yes, I will also miss knowing that Judith Durham is still alive and kicking. She seemed beautiful in spirit, to me.
I was 11 or 12 years old when this song started playing over and over again on AM radio, in Ohio.
Although I wasn't very old, and still new to the ways of the world, I saw and heard that something wasnt right.
More US soldiers were being sent to Vietnam. I also learned that some of them weren't coming back.
I'm trying to say that it was an odd side by side situation or juxtaposition, happy sounding songs like this one, and the escalating war--let alone the Cold War situation, with the possibity of an enormous loss of life.
So, I'm glad we had the Seekers, Judith, and all the other good music. Speaking for myself, I think life would have been unbearable without them.
