Dony - Want to thank you for video. Last night I had my MS192TC carb all apart and tonight was searching for new carbs or kits and ran across your video. My screen was clogged 3/4 and now it runs great. It's my dog sled trapping saw and carry it everywhere and use it at 40 below all the time so screen probably gets clogged fast. Just thanking you again. "Yukon Men" Stan from the TV show.

I have never posted a comment on anyone's video ever before but felt like at least saying thank you ! I have the same saw that was doing the same thing for a long time. Wouldn't throttle up, bogging and stalling constantly . It was driving me crazy. I took that screen out and it was plugged solid! I tossed it straight in the trash and the saw runs like new again. Thanks again for sharing!

@fifthward1983 Yes, he should have cleaned and replaced the screen. If you live in an arid area, using a saw without the screen can cause a fire. It starts as a tiny smoldering bit of sawdust and can grow into a flame if the right tender is available.
To clean the screen, hold it with a pliers and burn it with a propane torch until it's red hot. Then brush it with either a steel or brass brush and put it back into the saw.

I pulled that screen right out the first week I bought my 192c. I was commercial logging big Hemlock that had branches from top to bottom and the 192 was a lot better limbing than carrying my 440!
Right now my 192c starts and quits after primer bulb gas is used up. I am thinking the impulse line because I have checked vent, replaced filter and fuel lines are all good. The carb is a new Stihl OEM replacement. The 192 is a finicky saw even when it runs good. It is light and I like that but I always felt it was an overpriced 170 type saw..got a cheap feel and not as dependable as a pro saw. My 440 has cut since new in 2007...bulletproof! 192 is a different story.

Don, while your videos are highly appreciated, as this one as well, in this case it may be best to clean the spark arrestor and replace it for two reasons. Reason one and perhaps the most important, the spark arrestor functions as a line of defense for fires produced by carbon particles. The second reason is that in many countries, the spark arrestor is REQUIRED due to reason one.
Some compressed air or a bit of carburetor clearer will do the job.

You can take a plier and hold muffler screen and a wire brush and clean it that way also, and reinstall.

When I was working on some Stihl leaf blowers, they had the screw in type of spark arrestor which I cleaned by burning the carbon off with a propane torch.
I'm not sure how much oil they were mixing into the fuel at the nursing home my dad used to work at,but they blew a fair bit of smoke with what fuel was in them when I got the 2 stroke equipment to work on,the spark plug was often oily.
When the 2 stroke equipment is run on the recommended 50:1 fuel to oil mixture, they barely even blow smoke.

I removed the Spark arrester screen on my Echo weedwacker last winter. It makes the engine more responsive and seems to start a lot easier.

  • @2clones

For anyone living in an arid environment, like myself, it's a good idea to clean and reinstall the screen. Don't want to be starting any range fires!
To clean, simply burn the screen with a propane torch then brush off the carbon with a wire brush.

For many saws removing the spark screen is a very effective performance boost but check the legality, in certain areas you can be severely prosecuted.

@th19940305 It stops any sparks from coming out of the muffler. If sparks are allowed to fly out they could hit some saw dust or wood chips and start a fire.

Had this problem a few times with different machines, most new saws have restrictive mufflers and the spark screen just makes things worse. If you're in a country that suffers from bush fires then they will be a legal requirement but you can get round this putting another hole in the muffler and fitting another spark screen which are available separately = DIY dual port muffler

up were i work, fastco, i run into this problem all the time, mostly i get the screen problem with stihl's on the trimmers and chainsaws, but for you who don't know the screens on the stihl trimmers are on the back of the muffler I forget what size socket but you unscrew it and it has a screen on the end of it, clean it or remove it. but up a work im not allowed to remove the screens even if the customer said to its the laws of epa and osha crap.

I wish my problem was so simple. I’ve been chasing this bog issue for some time. Saw is a def a few years old but hasn’t really seen too much use. I’ve removed the jet from the carb and found it to be somewhat plugged. What are you using to clean the jets?….welding tip cleaner kit? Seems some don’t recommend that. What is your solution to clogged jets mate?

My trick to clean the screens: get red hot with propane/mapp torch (carefully, low fire). Then, quickly, move to compressed air jet (again, gently, not a lot needed). You will be able to 'move' the oxidizing carbon spot under the air jet around the screen until it is all burned off.

Hi...and thanks for all the informative videos!
I do have a question about a Homelite chainsaw 33cc model number UT10947E
The saw starts up fine but the chain brake is in the on position even with the brake in the off position, thus causing the clutch not to move the chain.I have removed the clutch housing to expose the brake components and it appears that the brake is secure around the clutch housing.I can pully back really hard to disengage the brake but it will not release the brake. Thanks!!!

Ran a brand new ms170 one season and had trouble early the next. Got a carb online which didn`t change anything. Was very disgusted when I found the screen plugged. Ran a Poulan over 30 years and never plugged up a screen. I didn`t bother checking it at first because it didn`t seem logical to be plugged.

  • @joshuarugg

@donyboy73 actually dony. its time for him to get a new saw. homelites have the chain brake on the inside around the inboard sprocket/clutch. its not worth it to fix a $200 homelite saw. just buy a new one. i have the same saws both the 90s model and the 2004 model 33cc and they both have the chain brake around the sprocket. if i were you, id buy a husqvarna like a 235 or a 435. both have replaceable sprockets and they are the outboard type with the chainbrake on the sprocket cover.
