The Ultimate Tulum Travel Guide: Discovering the Best Food in Tulum 2023

  • Hey there! Welcome to the first video I ever posted on my TH-cam channel where I take you on a virtual trip to Tulum sharing all the must-try foods you absolutely cannot miss while you're there. From the freshest seafood to mouth-watering tacos, we've got you covered in this ultimate Tulum food guide. Join us as we explore the best local spots and give you the inside scoop on where to find the most delicious and authentic food in Tulum.
    Tulum, Mexico, is oftentimes misportrayed as being an Instagrammable beach paradise where luxurious hotels, beach clubs, and frozen drinks reign supreme. I knew there was a more authentic side of Tulum left to be explored and I wanted to share our experience with that side of Tulum by focusing on the authentic Mexican food we found in Tulum.
    On our trip, we decided to stay outside of downtown and away from the busy (and overly expensive) hotel area near Tulum Beach at a brand new boutique hotel by the name of Casa Altamar which we absolutely loved. The staff there is amazing and because there are only 4 other rooms aside from your own, it truly feels like a private beach oasis. They have their own dock and a private beach where you can take their kayaks out and borrow their snorkeling equipment for a world-class snorkeling experience just a few hundred yards from your beachfront room. I can't recommend Casa Altamar enough, this place is a gem and it feels like you are truly in a secluded area of Tulum that is still somewhat undiscovered.
    While in Tulum, I wanted to try all of the best street tacos I could find and I wanted to narrow down my favorites for this video to provide a (somewhat) comprehensive guide on where to find the best street tacos in Tulum. As you will see in my video, my favorite tacos are Al Pastor, so I tried many different types as I could stomach before I found my favorite pastor tacos at a place called La Riviera Costeña located in Tulum Centro.
    However, the best tacos we had on our entire trip were from a place in the colonial city of Valladolid called Taqueria Rosario. The owner and his wife, who owns the tortilleria directly next door/attached to the taqueria, have been in business together for over twenty years and he serves up the best Cocinita Pibil tacos I've ever tried. After you finish up the tacos, head over to Cenote Zaci for a swim in one of the best cenotes in Mexico.
    On the higher end of things -- the side mostly portrayed on social media is in the Tulum Beach area which is located about a 20-minute drive from downtown. There you will find all of the luxurious accommodations such as Papaya Playa Project, La Zebra Hotel Tulum, Azulik Resort, El Pez Hotel Tulum, Ahau Tulum, NEST Tulum, and Be Tulum, to name a few. And listen, I can't knock this area too much. The beach and the restaurants here are top-notch including ARCA, Hartwood, Casa Jaguar, Gitano, Ka'an Tulum, Posada Margherita, El Tábano, Kitchen Table, and Loyal Order Tulum. We didn't get to visit all of them on our trip, but the people who work at Casa Altamar recommended those places to us and swore by them. I have also come across many of them in my research as being the top spots along Tulum Beach.
    While we were in the area, we had lunch at La Zebra and hung out on the beach while enjoying a bucket of beers and some mezcal along with some chicken nachos to snack on. Prices were very fair considering you're sitting right on the beach with full waitstaff and a beautiful view. After hanging out on the beach all day, we caught the sunset on the rooftop of Puro Corazón and then headed to dinner at ARCA where we had one an amazing meal in their incredible restaurant enshrouded by creeping jungle.
    ARCA was founded by a young chef, Jose Luis Hinostroza, who is a former Chef de Cuisine from NOMA. Hinostroza now brings some Nordic locavore spirit to Tulum with his open-kitchen concept located in the jungle of Tulum Beach. Hinostroza is the California-raised son of a Mexican family. He worked at Alinea in Chicago and El Cellar de Can Roca in Spain before heading to Copenhagen restaurant Noma. That trip brought him to Tulum to spearhead Rene Redzepi’s Noma Mexico pop up in 2017 and he never left. We had an excellent dinner, most of which I didn't get a video of because I was enjoying my meal with my girlfriend, but take my word for it when I say this is not to be skipped. However, you will probably spend as much money on this one meal (we spent about $280 with food and 4 cocktails) as you do on all of the tacos and street food you could possibly want in an entire week in Tulum Centro. Budget it into your plans, trust me!
    If you have any other questions, please feel free to message me or direct message me on Instagram at @DankEatsBlog where I also have a highlight story with all of the places we visited with the locations and brands tagged where possible.
    Cheers!

    When i see all this good food, i get so hungry. Freshmade Tortillas, Empanadas....
    I lived over 2 years in “Mexico lindo“
    and love this simple but delicious, muy rico. I lived in Tuxtepec in the state of Oaxaca. Ive seen all this beautiful places in the south. The first time i came to Mexico was in 1984. In 1990 i visited Cancun but we went on a beach between Cancun and Tulum, at that time you had Tourists only in Cancun. The other beaches were paraiso con Mosquitos. And the food, and the music... and the smells of all of that... i must stop now...disculpame !

      Thanks for watching! I think they did get the sea weed under control but it was kinda bad in a few places along the beach where no one does beach cleanup in the morning. Most of the places you stay will comb/rake the beach every morning to get rid of it. It wasn’t in the water at all though when we were there. 👍🏻

      It’s about a 10 minute drive, but I would definitely recommend renting a car so that you can get around to the ruins, cenotes, Tulum beach area, and a day trip out to Valladolid. It’s definitely worth having your own car.

    Definitely going to try the Tulum Centro taco reccos! Was La Zebra overpriced and are you able to sit on the chairs by the beach? or would you reccomend playa paraiso for laying out in the sun? Also do most places only take pesos? :)

    • @dankeats
      @dankeats  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The best tacos and authentic food is definitely in Tulum centro. Most restaurants out near the beach are fancier and cater to tourists mostly but can be delicious like ARCA and Hartwood to name a couple of my favorites. La Zebra wasn’t too overpriced, we enjoyed our day there but you do have to get there early to get a cabana but we were able to get some chairs pretty easily when we were there. I would recommend going to your bank at home where you live and exchanging for pesos and bringing some with you to use as much as possible. You’ll get a better exchange rate than when you take money out there. We had $500 USD in cash for 7 days and had more than enough, but we ate at a lot of taco stands as you can see lol and we paid with card at places like La Zebra or ARCA. Hope that helps! Feel free to ask me any other questions you may have. :)

    • @dankeats
      @dankeats  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tanyasinha810 I can’t say because we didn’t take a single taxi. we rented a car for our trip, which I highly recommend doing so that you can make trips to the cenotes, into town, and potentially to Valladolid, which I would really recommend doing also. They will tell you that you need all these types of different insurances but if you have a credit card that covers you, you can decline most of them but you will need to pay for the one that covers accidents in Mexico and the damage of other peoples cars or property. I’m sure the prices are different now but we rented a car for seven days for around $400 and it was so worth it.

      Akumal is fine. Less crowded, but no vibe or special sense of place. Old uninteresting hotels and apartments. Blah. Tulum beach zone is wonderfully bohemian chic and dazzlingly gorgeous, with stunning creativity, and a stunningly evocative vibe, but breathtakingly high prices. You think Europe feels expensive? Ha! After spending time in the Tulum beach zone, Europe seems like a bargain! Tulum village is much more reasonably priced, but the beach zone will cause your credit cards to burst into flames. I keep going back twice a year at least however. Just love that bohemian luxury chic vibe. Nothing like it elsewhere. So I pay up.

    • @dankeats
      @dankeats  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert Foster agreed! That’s why I tried to show Tulum beach a little bit because there are good things about it, but I wouldn’t spend my entire vacation there. We went one day to have dinner at ARCA and spend the day having drinks served to us at La Zebra, which was recommended to us by some friends who spent their honeymoon there. I definitely enjoyed the “downtown” Tulum area more with its street food and much more affordable prices.

      It depends on where you spend your time and what you value. If you want beach clubs with cabanas and servers to bring you drinks it can get pricey but still not even close to what you’d pay for the same thing in America. If you enjoy street food and spend time in downtown tulum, it’s not expensive for what you get.
