I didn't consider buing one of those cars... Somehow it now stands in front of my place and I couldn't be happier.

Hey, if you don't mind me asking? Hows the maintenance on the car so far? Any issues?

@@DimitriPotapoff Well I had a high speed meeting with wildlife, so I don't have it anymore. The engine (JTD) had 300k km and I spun 22k on top of it, so I'd say that was without much issues. Car wasn't very rusty too. The only problems were with the wrecked suspension (arms, ball joints, bearings). But these parts are rather inexpensive, if you buy secondary production, and you can change them at home with reasonable tools. So I'd say, for as long as you don't buy some exotic version, it's basically prettier Fiat. Personally, I'd prefer repairing this, over a VW Passat, anytime. When it comes to safety, that 80kg wild boar went a little deeper in to the hood at 90km/h than I'd prefer. It's an old car after all. Even though it was repairable, considering the fact that driver side impact distorted the passenger beam as well, left me unsettled.

I'm currently looking for a cheap car, and I just love Alfa Romeos, and 145/146 are the ones that are becoming more accessible for low prices... I know I should look for a more sensible, more reliable choice, but my heart still drawing me to a 146... as Jeremy Clarkson said, you're not a true petrolhead unless you had at least one Alfa in your life :)

I owned a 1999 Alfa 146 1.6 twin spark. Lots of problems. The most serious was a dead 2nd gear synchronizer. I had to learn to double clutch...both upshift and downshift.

Something to be aware of is that the engine tends to overheat when idling or in traffic, at least in the earlier models. Had a 1996 1.6 Boxer engine, sounded amazing

Any feedback about the 1.4 boxer engine? The sound is cool but what about the rest?

    • @benoitg8988

      Hello there,
      I don’t think the 1,4 boxer engine ever existed … the boxer engines came in 1.3 / 1.6 and 1.7 l.
They were replaced by the TwinSpark engines which came in 1.4 / 1.6 / 1.8 l around 1996.
The most powerful engine has always been a 2,0 16v TS since the beginning on the 145 QV and the 146 TI.
      I drove a 146 1.6 boxer during 11 years.
I bought it with 140 000 km and sold it with 255 000 km, still in good shape. To be fair, the clutch and the gearbox were a bit tired when I sold it.
The few troubles i’ve been going threw during these years :
      - clutch transmitter / receiver to change
      - fuel pump to change
      - brake hose to change
      - the front right brake caliper was partly blocked because of the rust ; the mechanic disassembled it and cleaned it.
These little troubles appeared after 200 000 km.
But something you will get used to before that : minor electrics problems (brake lights, indicators) and poor quality materials (headliner fabric goes off, window doesn't go up right after years …).
The boxer is underrated ; it’s not the most economic engine, but it’s a lot more reliable than you can read here and there. The 1.6 boxer doesn’t make your car a rocket but the 103 hp are nice to play with. Good handling, the engine gives the car a low center of gravity (watch out for understeer on a wet road though).
      And what a sound.
For sure, I think the TS engines are more adapted on this car. The 145 / 146 are heavier than the Alfasud, Sprint and 33 the boxer engine were made for. It’s also more economic, more powerful, flexible. And it’s easier to find this car with a TS than a boxer engine.
But mate, the boxer has this not-that-easy-to-handle taste and I enjoyed the throatty sound of this engine every single time I turned the key during these 11 years.

@@benoitg8988 it did at least until 1995,it had a output figure of 90hp, I think it is carburetor. I am still thinking in actually buying that car. I truly appreciate your extensive review! That 1.4 engine is not very powerful for that heavier car but it is in good condition and low mileage. Let's see what happen in the next weeks with this virus thing, main plans became totally different. Cheers!

Watch out for synchronizer problems. My second gear synchro started to fail at 9,000km. Classic Alfa Romeo fault still lives on in these cars. Not so in the 156.

...."electric problems" & rust on italian cars...yep...but it was in the 70-80's...why this "warning" is still mentioned in all comments about Fiat/alfa/lancia etc. ??? I had problems with my cars, but never had an "electric problem" (except flat battery) and never had a single problem with my Fiat (10 years of hard service without problems with a supposed "badly built" Fiat Tipo...) & Alfa cars....had many problems with a supposed "extremely well built" Ford, in fact except the engine (Ford-Yamaha engineering), all the rest of the car was crap !...So, instead of repeating the same old story, try to update a bit your comments on electricity & rust.........
