I was kicking myself for a while for not getting the HDR 50 and getting the HDR 68 instead. I just assumed a smaller projectile at a similar speed would have greater penetrating potential. But the difference in kinetic energy makes the HDR 68 the real winner.
@@Beggars-Belief after the removal of the restrictor you’ll get about 5 or 6 solid shots out of the HDR 68 that I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of. I live in the US and own many firearms but the HDR 68 is the only gun at night time that sits next to the bed. I do trust it. My use of it was to provide enough time to unlock the gun cabinet and load up an AR or a shotgun. After practicing with it I have decided the next step in my plan might not be necessary. That’s only with the removal of the restrictor however. The gun will come from the factory more geared towards paintball or pepper ball use. I’m not a fan of the use of pepper balls in my home. So pull that restrictor and use heavy kinetic balls. Such as rubber steel or even nylon. The effects of the pepper balls do take a minute and by the time they do the attacker might close the gap and even expose you to the pepper. IMO
Hey man, thanks a lot! I try to keep my head low and work hard! (I actually meant to comment all this on one of your most recent videos, but never got around to.) Keep up the great work my man I love your channel!
Right projectile in the right marker and they can really perform. Put them in a mag-fed launcher and they require TLC to keep from jamming badly. I would definitely trust those in the Umarex system though!
No jams at all, or just a reduction in the frequency of jams? I know that reversing the follower and lubing helps too but they aren’t completely eliminated.
I think the sky is the limit with these things. Now, that sounds a bit too explosive for a gun made out of plastic, but who knows! I love the idea for sura :)
Can you do a video on on your personal opinion of the best projectiles as far as stability in the air and damage And the most reliable for self-defense?
Great question my friend! Even better, in two weeks (if all goes well) I’ll be coming out with a “HDR 50 vs real ballistic dummy” (with bones and everything) and I’ll be testing a whole variety of slugs against it. That will tell us a lot :)

get some lead from airgun ammunition, get a round mold that fits the caliber you want, and then hammer the airgun ammunition in it till you get the size you desire
Great video as always. Although I did feel a little uncomfortable about the waste of food. Not sure if I missed it, but are your HDR's standard or do they have the valve block and restrictor removed?
Hi Anna, thank you very much and I truly appreciate your concern on the food wasting. I’m actually in talks with the manager of my local supermarket to see if they can provide me with fruits (coconuts and watermelons) that they intend throwing away after expiration. As for the the spaghettios, I have no remorse in “wasting” such poison. And finally the water jugs are filled with tap water, after we drink them. The HDR 50 is a standard 11 joules while the HDR 68 has had restrictor and valve block removed. Thank you again! :)
@@AirgunAlley On that note, will be having HDR 68 16j soon and really admire your 30j but worried about whether there is any cons in long term with removed restrictor and valve, 'juice' consumption and parts availability in SA. Bonjour, LTL marque italienne a produit le Alpha en calibre 0.50 Les avis sont très moyens, mais LTL vient de produire le Bravo toujours en calibre 0.50 pour 18 joules annoncés. As-tu eu l'occasion de le tester ?
Hello there! I think they both serve different purposes. The killer spikes will penetrate clothing and perhaps even some skin and tissue. The Zrams are more for knock out. The fact that they’re pointy - from what I’ve noticed so fat - doesn’t make them particularly penetrating. But a hit with those on the head… ouch! I often recommend to keep a variety of ammo and to alternate it in a magazine. That way you have more variety depending on the scenario. Hope that helps! Enjoy your 33j lil canon!
Well said, and I’ll add that these are great self defense tools in countries like Europe where the chances of being confronted by someone with a real firearm are minimal.
Hey my friend! Really sorry to hear. Also in my case it took a while as the first batch was blocked at the NY customs for a few weeks. The second batch came in super fast. Another time (with a different brand) the slugs were stuck at the German customs for over one month. But I’m glad Z-Ram responded to you. Hope all issues will be solved now :) Happy New Year!!
Very informative and good grouping! I was wondering if these z projectiles would be capable of being fired from a first strike compatible marker like the valken m17?
Didnt do as well as i thought but damn that hdr50 in the fps test was unbelievably consistent. I miss the stop motion magazine/drum loading you did in your earlier videos.
Oh man! You really want me to work hard don’t ya! You’re right tho, it’s been a while since I’ve done one of those stop motion loading segments… will do! I also need to come see what you’ve been up to with your videos. I’m sure you’ve been doing great work as always ok your channel… Happy New Year my friend!!
Oh man, great question! I’m planning to do a ‘top 5 best slugs for the HDR’ - but it’s so hard to chose which ones. At the moment I keep 3 mags near my gun and they’re each loaded with (alternated): ballbearing slugs (devastator/deez bullets/jaw-droppers), steel/aluminum balls, pepper balls and now Zrams. I think that alternating two of any of the projectiles I listed, is the most effective way to go… hope that somewhat helped 😬
Spot on!! I just filmed this video yesterday for this weekend! There is a new 68 cal version, longer and more pointy, that comes with a 3D printed magazine to fit them. But tor all the other versions, no special mag needed…
It makes big entry holes but that's about it, I assume it's because it's only 12g co2 powered. I'm sure the PCP rifle will definitely penetrate much deeper and most likely go through all the test. I know a simple .177 break barrel pellet rifle would enter and exit all test. Another channel filled a coconut with ballistics gel and had no issue entering on first hit and even exiting the other side. My .177 break barrel shooting lead at 1000fps or alloy at 1200fps has been able to punch through 5/8" plywood at fairly good distance.
Hi Matthew, you make good points - but we need to separate the apples from the oranges. The whole point of these weapons and ammo are to be less-lethal, as that’s the category they fall under. So you want them to really hurt, to deter and perhaps to knock out someone, without killing them. And remember 50 cal is a huge caliber compared to the .177 which is like a needle in comparison. PCP is designed for hunting, so we would absolutely expect full penetration. I know, there’s a lack of visual satisfaction (for that I’d suggest some of my pcp videos), but these Zrams are doing their job well. Thanks again!
@@AirgunAlley ya nothing against the ammo, although they do look deadly, I've seen several of your videos just not the pcp ones. While back the darts lol definitely wouldn't feel good and would be boarderline lethal. If the objective is a good non lethal round perhaps rate on accuracy vs penetration since any thing coming out those will hurt for damn sure. Want to say you tested a dense rubber slug , if non lethal is the point those were best ones I've seen you shoot, accurate and prolly just as if not more painful then beanbags similar to rubber bullets fired out of a 12gauge . I'd have to go back and check which they were. Didn't know that was point of the test so wasn't knocking anything.
Nice tests, very well done !! Unfortunately the rubber mask is too flexible and I suppose the results are not realistic. Anyway, very interesting !! Go ahead
Grazie Giampiero! And you’re very right! Soon I’ll be getting a real ballistic dummy, that will finally give us realistic results! I look forward to that, and thanks again!
Ashtrays just like 72 caliber. Love the Dragon Claw, especially with the arrows. Had been looking for a review of the 40 joule HDX 68CAL. Very impressive coconut water for 68cal CO2 pistol
It *seems* the .50's are more effective than the .68's, yes? With your experience with the "normal" round ones, are the .50's more effective with those as well? It seems to my limited knowledge that their lighter weight and reduced wind resistance would mean they go further faster harder, yes?
Hi Scott, I would agree with you. These are very interesting, because they’re a hybrid between a piercing projectile and a “knock out” one. They don’t fully penetrate, but they hit hard. I tried them on a ballistic dummy recently and even then it was hard to judge their performance. They impact hard, but don’t penetrate. So it’s hard to evaluate how much pain they actually inflict. I suspect they hurt a lot, despite it being visually “improvable”. I know I didn’t answer your question - but this is the analysis I’ve made on these thus far
@@AirgunAlley Ok using the imperfect automatic translator I didn't get this information...sorry 🙂 Do you have any idea of the difference in impact with the devastator? Have a nice day
Hi Nico, haha no problem at all. I think the Devastator are stronger on impact, so better for hard surface. These are obviously good for penetration or for making a whole in fabric/clothes. In this video I compared various types, hope it helps 😊 th-cam.com/video/wXdm9opY73k/w-d-xo.html

I just hope your Mrs won’t make you unsubscribe from my channel one day 😂 Thanks for the heads up (no pun intended), I’ve seen that zombie go boom channel before actually. But I found some makers that are a bit closer (here in the US) and who’ve offered amazing discounts. But I’ll def reach out to them as well. Anyway, have a lot of fun tonight my mate!! Happy New Year!!
I still prefer round balls for the HDRs. When fired from a smoothbore gun, the bullets tend to tumble in the air, which means they don't hit straight. With round bullets it doesn't matter, but with pointy ones it means that they often hit the target with their side or even back, negating all pointy tip advantage. They look cool, but they are terrible in practice.
I disagree. In my experience, and as shown in this video, the Z-Ram slugs do indeed have a stable trajectory and pentrate an object pointed end first in most cases
Thanks for your input. I’m not too sure that these tumbled so much in flight. Of course I believe these launchers are very much made for short distance shooting. If your target is far away, I’m sure the chances of it getting hit by the point are reduced. But from 20/30ft - you’ll most likely get hit from the front of the slug…
for NON LETHAL home defense, the standard stock 11j HDR50 with standard concorde defender ammo should be fine, right? i believe theyre rubber or nylon (1.3 gram). these upgrades and alternative ammos are more for fun, correct? i dont feel like trying it on myself to find out, but i want to hear from others here if you think its enough or if i should modify it for more joules or get other types of ammo, what i hope to acomplish is for this to cause enough pain for the intruder to not want to be shot again and stop/give up/run away if its a person up to no good that want to cause me harm, kind of like you would feel if youre hit hard with a sjambok, baseballbat or similar and you DONT want that again. Thats what i hope it will do.
Hello my friend and great question. Also, this is the main question (and discussion) ever since these guns have been circulating. I think an honest answer would be: it all really depends. If your intruder is an unarmed person, wearing light clothes and generally not desperate to absolutely get what he wants - then absolutely, you should be fine. But if the intruder is all drugged up and doesn’t feel pain, armed and determined, then it would be safer to avoid pointing an HDR 50 at him and just run for the door. In Europe you obviously have a much bigger chance to find your self in the first scenario. Here in the US you need to be really careful. In conclusion, I think they’re great weapons to have, obviously the more powerful the better and also keep a variety of slugs in the same magazine is helpful. Alternating pointy ones, metal ballbearing ones and pepper balls. That way you have a bigger chance on a larger variety of scenarios. Hope this helps and indeed hopefully you’ll get more replies and points of view…
@@AirgunAlley It helps alot, thanks! Well, home defense is as valid of a question in europe as in the US depending on where you live but you cant defend yourself with gunpowder firearms without breaking the law, and getting a liscence etc is a hazzle, so this is one alternative. Since winter clothing is used for much of the year too, i should probably look for the types of ammo you tested here since it will probably go trough the clothes. And the HDR50 is not my only defensive item, i intend to use it to stop/chase away the threat FIRST, i want it to hurt enough to STOP whatever goes on but not to put a person down completely. Its a fine balance i know. But i have a (legal) plan B i hope i dont have to use if this is not enough.
Thanks a lot my friend! Indeed these definitely inflict a lot more pain and penetration than most. Of course it all depends on distance, launcher power and where the shot is placed on the body, bet these are probably the most less less-lethal out there 😂
I have some of Z-Ran older version, they shoot great zombies be where Is that the dragons claw 50 cal you showed there. Wow real ballistic gel hitting the big times that stuff is not cheap BTW there is one way to damage a Z-Ram with another Z-Ram I've done it

Well, if you take a full power hdr50 the results would be another and the 50 will win for sure each test. Happy new year my friend. May I ask what's your relationship to natives, because of the many old photos in your office?
Hello my friend and happy new year to you too! Absolutely, these are pure bullets if you put them into a full powered gun. For some reason I developed a strong interest in Native culture as a child and spending my childhood summers in a ranch in Texas (on what used to be Comanche territory) only made my passion stronger. IMO

Love to.see you shoot some ballistic gel with those. Thank you.
Done :) th-cam.com/video/a-xFUPEKuxY/w-d-xo.html and the 68 cal version will be out this Saturday…
Right projectile in the right marker and they can really perform. Put them in a mag-fed launcher and they require TLC to keep from jamming badly. I would definitely trust those in the Umarex system though!
For mag fed, Z-Ram sells a 'MagMode' for the T8, T9 and FSC mags to prevent jams. I've have them in mine and they work great with zram slugs! 👍
No jams at all, or just a reduction in the frequency of jams? I know that reversing the follower and lubing helps too but they aren’t completely eliminated.
@@ScaredyCatTactical Yeah, no jams at all in my T8.1. I also add a bit of silicone grease. So far they've been great
Very interesting guys! Thank you for your expert inputs on this! 🙏🏽 and Happy New Year!!
can you drill a hole in them and place a shot gun primer and fill the backside with Tannerite
I think the sky is the limit with these things. Now, that sounds a bit too explosive for a gun made out of plastic, but who knows! I love the idea for sura :)
Going to be trying some of these crazy .50 cal bullets in the Dragon Claw, huh? Been thinking of trying some of them in my Wing Shot II.
Hehe how did you know that’s the plan?? Let’s see how it goes and let’s pray that it won’t jam anything. Shall keep you posted my friend!

I would like to get some of them. It seems they are reusable as long as you don't shot anything really hard. Thanks for the review
Absolutely and even if you hit something really hard - I would still bet on their reusability. They really feel extremely solid…
My complete pleasure and thank YOU for the comment
What weight were you using in the later scenes please?
get some lead from airgun ammunition, get a round mold that fits the caliber you want, and then hammer the airgun ammunition in it till you get the size you desire
@@AirgunAlley Lol, yes they are nasty. Great job!
@@AirgunAlley On that note, will be having HDR 68 16j soon and really admire your 30j but worried about whether there is any cons in long term with removed restrictor and valve, 'juice' consumption and parts availability in SA. Bonjour,

Les avis sont très moyens, mais LTL vient de produire le Bravo toujours en calibre 0.50 pour 18 joules annoncés.
As-tu eu l'occasion de le tester ?
Very interesting my friend and thank you for the info! I have never tried them, but will do a research now! 🙏🏽
Grimburg Gavel, try this one. 39 Joules, extremely powerful
Yess! I hope to try that soon
Which did you like better the killer spikes or the Zrams? I just ordered a modified hdr 33 joules.
Do you have to have the z ram mag for the 68 to shoot them or can you use the stock mag ?
No not for these original ones.

Great video. Can I use the Z-RAM .68 10g ammo with the Valken M17 CQMF?
This is a pretty good option for someone who can't own a real gun. This thing looks like it does some damage in a self defense situation.
Well said, and I’ll add that these are great self defense tools in countries like Europe where the chances of being confronted by someone with a real firearm are minimal.
absolutely impressing!
in Germany those weapons are reduced to 7J, but I don't even want a potentially deadly weapon...

hello, very sorry to hear that. did you write to our support with the order number?
Hey my friend! Really sorry to hear. Also in my case it took a while as the first batch was blocked at the NY customs for a few weeks. The second batch came in super fast.
Another time (with a different brand) the slugs were stuck at the German customs for over one month. But I’m glad Z-Ram responded to you. Hope all issues will be solved now :)

@z-ram hey guys yea they actually showed up the next day! Very pleased with these things.
Very informative and good grouping! I was wondering if these z projectiles would be capable of being fired from a first strike compatible marker like the valken m17?

Slugs in a paintball rubber ball gun. Interesting
Great video :D - I really need some of those projectiles... What is your favorite projectiles for HD?
Oh man, great question! I’m planning to do a ‘top 5 best slugs for the HDR’ - but it’s so hard to chose which ones. At the moment I keep 3 mags near my gun and they’re each loaded with (alternated): ballbearing slugs (devastator/deez bullets/jaw-droppers), steel/aluminum balls, pepper balls and now Zrams.
I think that alternating two of any of the projectiles I listed, is the most effective way to go… hope that somewhat helped 😬
Thanks for a another great video👍 how many do you get with the 50 cal??
Hello, in a set are 6 high-precision reusable CNC turned stainless steel slugs. Greetings daniel
Hey Conner! Got your answer from them man himself! Thank you so much as always and Happy New Year!!
How do you think 🤔 7.5 joule in a 68 caliber would be with this ammo?
With the lighter version (8,5g) and at closer range (around 15/20ft or 5/6m) I think they’re very effective also with the 7,5
Thank you my friend and have a happy New Year
Hi, I've heard you need special magazines Z ram, is that true ?
Spot on!! I just filmed this video yesterday for this weekend!
There is a new 68 cal version, longer and more pointy, that comes with a 3D printed magazine to fit them.
But tor all the other versions, no special mag needed…
Not the cantaloupe,I love ambrosia canelopes. I use to grow them at the ranch in Winter Haven.
Sharp shootin partna
Thank you my man!! 🙌🏼
I know I didn’t answer your question - but this is the analysis I’ve made on these thus far
considering the precision in the cans and the melon I think you are much closer than 6 meters?
Not unless the desk moved without me noticing! I shot more than one round (as I say at 15:51) and skipped the misses
@@AirgunAlley Ok using the imperfect automatic translator I didn't get this information...sorry 🙂
Do you have any idea of the difference in impact with the devastator?
Have a nice day
Hi Nico, haha no problem at all. I think the Devastator are stronger on impact, so better for hard surface. These are obviously good for penetration or for making a whole in fabric/clothes. In this video I compared various types, hope it helps 😊

Z-RAMS ROCK
I still prefer round balls for the HDRs. When fired from a smoothbore gun, the bullets tend to tumble in the air, which means they don't hit straight. With round bullets it doesn't matter, but with pointy ones it means that they often hit the target with their side or even back, negating all pointy tip advantage. They look cool, but they are terrible in practice.
I disagree. In my experience, and as shown in this video, the Z-Ram slugs do indeed have a stable trajectory and pentrate an object pointed end first in most cases
I think getting hit from the side with a z projectile is still harder than a round bullet. the sides also have smaller impact areas than round balls
Woah, ricochets are looking so dangerous!
That’s why wearing protection is a must :)

@@noobt4eguns Yup. Like my little crossbow with double heavy razor tipped darts.
Thanks a lot my friend! Indeed these definitely inflict a lot more pain and penetration than most. Of course it all depends on distance, launcher power and where the shot is placed on the body, bet these are probably the most less less-lethal out there 😂
