  • Triple J has long been a great source of finding success for alternative musicians in Australia. Most popular underground artists can thank the station for a lot of their success in reaching wider audiences. Although, over the years there have been a few alternative Aussie artists that found different avenues to success, some of which became so big that Triple J could no longer ignore them. Others never saw attention from the national broadcaster despite their successes. In this video I take you through examples of these artists that found success without JJJ attention.

I was starting to write a comment pointing out Kirin and Alex Cameron so im glad they were included! Jack Ladder and The Drones have recieved very little air time on JJJ in the past. They may have had a stint for 6 months or so but considering how well regarded they are (particularly The Drones) they recieved very little attention.

Those are very good choices here some that I know through their songs, I did notice one act missing from this due to a error.

Sneaky Sound System is one that comes to mind. I feel like they would have fit in with the whole Pnau, Presets, Cut Copy and Empire of the Sun late-2000’s EDM scene but they were never played on Triple J somehow.

Triple J changed in the 2000s and been quite beige for a long time. hopefully by changing the music director it will support edgy, contemporary Australian music.

I’ve been a Troy Sivan fan for about 6 years. Some of his songs are brilliant, either pop-alt or pure pop music. “DKLA” , “Bite” and “For Him” are songs Triple J should have been playing in the 2010’s.

More recently, Newcastle band Vacations have a huge following outside Triple J. Yeah Triple J have been playing them this year but they got on the bandwagon after they got huge streaming numbers

Great mention. I made a video about Vacations getting played on triple j a little while ago.

I remember hearing an interview with Kirin on good nights when he released Bravado. They then proceeded to never play his music again.

whats crazy is Kerser founded and pushed that Sydney underbelly sound that Triple J actually plays now. They jumped on the bandwagon later and never supported him at the start, despite him being huge and even when he hadn't said controversial shit yet. And he's been rightfully upset at them ever since

I mean, Troye had the backing of a rich family - of course he was always going to bypass triple j entirely.

I'd argue King Gizzard would fit into this.
yeh the J's played their 2014 Mind Fuzz record, but it wasn't until they started touring the US and they released their 2016 album Nonagon Infinity that Gizz started to become what they are now, and it seemed like Triple J only ever gave them a cursory nod of acknowledgement.
now Gizz are so big that they can tour the US and EU, and sell out huge venues.

Not as mainstream, but Snowman were always much bigger in other countries than in Aus and a lot of that is probably down to 0 interest from Triple J. Courtney Barnett was also pretty vocal about Triple J only starting to play her after she already found fame.
Also, Sheppard became big from having rich parents.

Sorry to say, but Troy sivan isn't alternative that's raver music. That's the kinda stuff my cousins listen to in nightclubs

It’s funny they wouldn’t play particular artists for being to “poppy” but doja cat wins the hottest 100.
