      He was a very quiet soft spoken man. All he asked for in life was not being disturbed when his Atlanta Braves were playing on TV. But also the type when in a room and he spoke the whole room listened.

    I used to sing with some of these guys! The Waylors circa 1969: The great Jimmy Gray on guitar and vocals, Rick Gilbraith on organ, Sonny Ray on bass, and Ritchie Albright on drums. All but Sonny are out of Phoenix. This was my favorite group of Waylors. Incredibly tight, their sound was never really equaled again. Jimmy later played guitar with Townes Van Zandt, and can be heard harmonizing w/ Townes on the live version of "Dead Flowers". I always had 2 favorite singers, Waylon and Jimmy.

Ol' Waylon was a Texan and when I was "a little bitty teeny girl", he was a DJ for KOYL radio station here in town. Oh, be still my heart. My sister and I just loved him. A tall, good-looking fellow with a nice, deep voice. What's not to like?

      The man did have it all , the looks, voice and could play the he'll out a guitar. He had a sound that was his own. My generation makes crap country music "I'm 31" but there are a few that are trying to bring it back Chris Stappleton and Midland are two that I can think of. But yeah he was a rare breed.

      @towerhillbilly 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Charlie McCoy, who played harp on the studio version of this song revealed in a recent interview with Buddy Miller and Jim Lauderdale that Wayne Moss and Grady Martin flipped a coin to decide who would play the solo on this tune...Wayne Moss lost.....One of my favorite telecaster licks of all time!

    • @mosrite60
      @mosrite60 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      yeah, you're right. I seen Wayne Moss on Marty Stuart show recently. still a great guitar player. He used a "jazzmaster" on the show. But I suspect a tele on the recording. The jazzmaster just doesn't have that tele sound as Waylon plays here.

    • @goplad1
      @goplad1 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Chet Atkins had his core studio musicians on his sessions and he rarely would allow the artist to play on his own song, beyond maybe strumming a guitar. Waylon wanted to have his own band play on his recordings but Chet discouraged it. It was a point of contention for Waylon and it affected his relationship with Chet. Still some great songs came out of those sessions!

    • @mosrite60
      @mosrite60 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      goplad1 I heard Chet talk about this some time back. He said that RCA recording time was very tight and expensive and no time to waste. They had to do the whole album in one session so only top studio players were allowed to perform. Likes of Jerry Reed, Grady Martin. Hank Garland, Peter Drake, Rusty Young etc. But of course Waylon, Buck , Merle all wanted their own players. This is where the name "Outlaws" became famous. Chet asked Waylon what does this mean? Waylon did not reply. Chet looked very sad. Wayne Moss still excellent guitarist as seem on Marty Stuart show. Chet later became very good friends with Waylon.

    • @connorm955
      @connorm955 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, Chet wouldn't let the Waylors back Waylon, but strange enough Richard Albright, Paul Foster and Gerald Gropp did appear on some of his songs. See here countrydiscography.blogspot.ca/search/label/Jennings%20Waylon
