Missed opportunity to talk about how the PAL region handled 3DS cases differently. Here the spine stayed always the same,they only updated the Nintendo logo in the front cover for newer games. But still a very entertaining video! Thanks, Scott!

Even though it wasn't bought there... But opening up the box wrapped in the original Nintendo-branded film in 2022 and being able to play it in English on a non-German console is pretty rad! Sadly, nowadays with the Switch you can't flex like that anymore that you own a pal copy...
He could have just place those Red Logo cases after his "A to Z" system he set up. He should really shift his perpective to "Okay, so these Red Logo Games were in development as the Nintendo Devs were shifting to Switch Developed, and it's Nintendo's way of pointing it out as a form of Easter eggs.) He should really think of these games as a special "Swan Song/Final Goodbyes" from the 3DS Style of Developers as they shifted to Switch. I often imagine the 3DS devs polishing the final touches to there last 3DS games as either new staff or co-workers are slowing being told learn new skills for Switch, and the 3DS devs are kind of honored to have worked on the last few 3DS Nintendo titles. The Red Logo is an achievement.

I collect ps3 and the logo for that changed in late 2009. To keep uniformity I sort them alphabetically but keep all of the same logo together instead of mixing them. Looks better in my opinion and it’s fun to see them sorted by date in that way. (Makes you notice how much more they did custom fonts after the logo change)
I’m remaking the old covers with the new design because my ocd won’t allow me to have them mixed. It’s a challenge but the worst bit is getting the paper/printing right.
Finally, someone makes a video about the horror of the Nintendo 3DS spines. I've been waiting for someone to cover this topic. Thank you, Scott, for being brave enough to tackle this subject.
The BBC started releasing classic Doctor Who on DVD in something like 2001. They're still releasing them today and obviously the logo and overall design of them has changed massively... but every single one has a reversible cover with a design that replicates the original 2001 look on the back. That's the gold-standard for how to approach packaging changes I think.
Okay call me insane but my solution to this is alphabetical organization by year and by publisher so Nintendo old logo is fine then goes into red then idk 3rd party…. Cause that’s how I did mine cause I’m insane 0w0
So in Australia, we didn't get the red spine, it stayed the exact same as before. But instead they added the Nintendo logo on the bottom right of the boxart & also had an "also plays on 2ds/new 2ds" notice right next to it instead of the "plays only in 2d" notice. I personally don't find it too annoying, but I also wouldn't be sad without it
Maybe sort them alphabetically but divide them between the new and old logo? I think that'd look satisfying in its own way, and it would give a visual indication for when some games came out, which is kinda cool. Like reading the rings of a tree to see its age, just look at the logos on the shelf to check the age.

Scott. I am one of them. I like the design, but I also like that they are different. The games Nintendo released for 3DS after the Switch somehow feel really different than the older 3ds game and I like that the boxes reflect that. Just having a set of old ones together right next to the newer ones then right next to the switch cases just feel "right" to me
The 3ds is my favorite console. I love seeing Scott talking about the cases. I honestly never noticed they changed the logo on the spine. Come to think of it I don’t have a 2017 box with the red logo in my stash of games 😅
In Europe, we actually have the annoying generic font/game logo thing with every single Nintendo console between the Gamecube and the 3DS. That said, they didn't change the Nintendo logo on 3DS, so.
I don't think we ever got the Logo change for the 3DS boxes in Europe, so we got to keep it uniform :3 There is a downside, though; Not all games had the title on the spine in Logo form. Most of the time it's just a regular font. Not with all of em, mind you, but most.
Looking at my collection now (also european) and these are the differences: -Nintendo logo never changed to red and white (thank god) -this is the first time ive noticed most games have their own font on the spine but quite a few also have the generic DS font. All the games have the 3ds mini icon at the top just above the title. -for some reason my Pokemon Omega Ruby, which is in the red case, has a cover that is not uniform with any of the other 3ds games, and I have no idea why. It's just misaligned like the sheet is in a different size! -the case for Xenoblade Chronicles New3ds is black instead of white but otherwise the same as the american ones with the banner at the top of the front cover instead of on the left

i'm not sure if it was intentional (knowing nintendo it likely was) but the logo change from red to white-on-red evokes the name stamps used in east asia 印鑑 [inkan], whose two main forms are yang seals - printing just the letters (and often a border) in red ink, like the old logo; and yin seals - printing only the background in red ink, leaving the white of the paper for the letters, just like the new logo. cool video!
I love Scott's Stash videos. They're really a chill vibe. It's a nice relaxing version of his main channel where we just sit back and look at cool little Nintendo stuff. I recently binge watched videos like Wii U games on Switch, Wii U games not on Switch, Scott's 3DS and Wii U console collection, the SMB encyclopedia, the 3DS post-Nintendo Switch. All great stuff. Hey Scott, British person here! I know, run while you can. they never changed it over for the 3DS in PAL regions! 😂 Though it's not all sunshine and rainbows since way more 3DS games don't have custom fonts on their spines, for example my Kirby Triple Deluxe copy is just that generic font instead of 1:11 😅
3DS cases in the UK regions are different, green tag at the bottom is all I remember, this goes way back to the GameCube era at the time, we still have the same for modern Nintendo games which is strange when you think about it

@@HUYI1yeah the colour of the triangle (European spelling haha) represents what PAL region the game is from, with the UK being green. Though every colour can be played in every PAL region. The magenta triangle is for basically every PAL region. They do it for big box stuff like limited editions to lower the production costs of selling different big box games with different triangles. For games like that multiple languages need to be on the back. For example my copy of Ring Fit Adventure has multiple age ratings on the box and multiple different languages on the back of the case. I have to deal with having a few games that have different triangles to the others so I can relate haha Though we did get Wii Chess over here so I guess all is right with the world Thx for reading btw :D
Nintendo of Europe was very nice to us by not forcing the red logo on our spines and leaving it as it was! However we never got the cool logos for the first party games, everything first party just got the game name in grey text and you’d have to go down to at least second party Pokémon level to get some logos on the side

what I've always wondered about are those times where the game icon on the spine is different from the actual game icon, or when the spine decides to have a whole design rather than a logo (like SMT IV Apocalypse or Persona Q, which is even more noticeable when SMT IV and PQ2 just had the stylized font/logo on the spine)
To my understanding the red cases aren’t Mario marketing specific but in 2017-2018 Walmart & Target sold red cased games for I believe $20-$25 each. Similar to a “PlayStation hits” thing they were just trying to sell higher volume @ a lower price
Maybe there's something wrong with me, but I genuinely prefer the red logo! I think it looks nice. Very bold and modern :) I can definitely understand why they wouldn't look good on a shelf with the old design, though. Maybe the solution is to keep two separate alphabetised groups from each era? Might be worthwhile to have an Etsy graphic designer recreate your sleeves to be with the 'good' logo. There's some pretty professional creators, and I got a replacement 3D All-Stars sleeve from there (double sided too, looks amazing) when our case + sleeve got messed up.
This is just for the american versions of these games (I'm not sure about the japanese ones). In Europe we received all the cases with the grey Nintendo logo, complete white boxes (except for probably 4 or 5 games), and most of them have the average font on the spine until the end of the 3DS.

At least Nintendo didn't have to come up with some gimmicky minimalist logo, it was already minimal and rather fine at being that. Most importantly, it shows their whole name still.
I’m sooo glad you are talking about this. As a long time Zelda collector, the sheer inconsistency off all the DS+ family looks hideous. I’ve resorted to getting custom cassette cases from etsy so they look nicer together.

Honestly, in terms of the generic font on the spine, they probably couldn't fit the logo on it in a readable and appealing manner, so they went with that instead.
Glad I'm not the only person that has a problem with this. I get that Nintendo wanted red to represent their brand but they should've kept the spines the same but changed the color of the Nintendo logo itself to red on a white background. Yeah it would've stood out a little bit but it would've stood out far less compared to what they actually did.
I was painfully struck by just how depressingly boring the Switch game cases are when I put them in my bookshelf next to my 3DS game cases 😢 RIP 3DS games, life will never be the same 😞
The peppering of red along a latter-life library of 3DS games is pretty annoying, but I'd still take them over the Switch's spines. Most of the usual aesthetic stuff that people complain about with the Switch I can live with and sometimes be in favor of compared to the 3DS/ Wii U era, but the spines are not one of them. It's fun to just *look* all of my other games in my drawers because of all the colors and designs compared to the Switch's, hell even my Xbox games are more interesting to look at. Consistency is nice, but took a lot of life out of looking at a big row of Switch games on a shelf.
For some reason, Europe was spared from this debacle. However, we got slightly thinner cases at some point ca. 2019. The only game I have that's like that is Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey and once you see it, you cannot unsee it

An extra annoyance is that a few pre-2017 games were reprinted with this red logo. I have a copy of Smash 3DS with it unfortunately

Over here in Europe we don't have the red nintendo logo on the spines. They always stayed gray theough the 3ds' life

what I've always wondered about are those times where the game icon on the spine is different from the actual game icon, or when the spine decides to have a whole design rather than a logo (like SMT IV Apocalypse or Persona Q, which is even more noticeable when SMT IV and PQ2 just had the stylized font/logo on the spine)
This is so validating to finally have in a video. This particular problem was so annoying even my un-video-gamey girlfriend hates it on principle.
To my understanding the red cases aren’t Mario marketing specific but in 2017-2018 Walmart & Target sold red cased games for I believe $20-$25 each. Similar to a “PlayStation hits” thing they were just trying to sell higher volume @ a lower price

The funny thing is that this never happened in Europe. Here all the cases have the same logo no matter when the 3ds game was released!

It's funny because in Europe, Nintendo stood with the grey logo on the spine even after the logo change. They really did it to fuck up Scott

Maybe there's something wrong with me, but I genuinely prefer the red logo! I think it looks nice. Very bold and modern :)
I can definitely understand why they wouldn't look good on a shelf with the old design, though. Maybe the solution is to keep two separate alphabetised groups from each era?

Might be worthwhile to have an Etsy graphic designer recreate your sleeves to be with the 'good' logo. There's some pretty professional creators, and I got a replacement 3D All-Stars sleeve from there (double sided too, looks amazing) when our case + sleeve got messed up.

This is just for the american versions of these games (I'm not sure about the japanese ones). In Europe we received all the cases with the grey Nintendo logo, complete white boxes (except for probably 4 or 5 games), and most of them have the average font on the spine until the end of the 3DS.

At least Nintendo didn't have to come up with some gimmicky minimalist logo, it was already minimal and rather fine at being that. Most importantly, it shows their whole name still.

I’m sooo glad you are talking about this. As a long time Zelda collector, the sheer inconsistency off all the DS+ family looks hideous. I’ve resorted to getting custom cassette cases from etsy so they look nicer together.
Fun Fact: in europe games after 2017 still have old Nintendo logo on the spine, but they do have the new one on the right-down corner of the box art.

makes sense that they would change their logo in 2006 to a grey one cause they were really really leaning into that minimalist tech aesthetic up until 2016
Honestly, in terms of the generic font on the spine, they probably couldn't fit the logo on it in a readable and appealing manner, so they went with that instead.
It's such a small amount of the library affected you could get away with printing custom spines if you wanted to.
Glad I'm not the only person that has a problem with this. I get that Nintendo wanted red to represent their brand but they should've kept the spines the same but changed the color of the Nintendo logo itself to red on a white background. Yeah it would've stood out a little bit but it would've stood out far less compared to what they actually did.

I was painfully struck by just how depressingly boring the Switch game cases are when I put them in my bookshelf next to my 3DS game cases 😢 RIP 3DS games, life will never be the same 😞
This is why I put small pieces of paper into my cases with the red logo so they mesh better with the others (yes I have priorities in life I swear)
The peppering of red along a latter-life library of 3DS games is pretty annoying, but I'd still take them over the Switch's spines. Most of the usual aesthetic stuff that people complain about with the Switch I can live with and sometimes be in favor of compared to the 3DS/ Wii U era, but the spines are not one of them. It's fun to just *look* all of my other games in my drawers because of all the colors and designs compared to the Switch's, hell even my Xbox games are more interesting to look at. Consistency is nice, but took a lot of life out of looking at a big row of Switch games on a shelf.
For some reason, Europe was spared from this debacle. However, we got slightly thinner cases at some point ca. 2019. The only game I have that's like that is Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey and once you see it, you cannot unsee it

i think its fitting that nintendo went with red, now you have the 3 largest console manufacturers each using one of the 3 primary colors.
Fortunately this only affects the US releases. UK ones don't have that red block on the spines nor did we get the red cases.
