My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlog daily (when I'm not on a between-season break), and love pizza a little too much.

You drop your phone a lot, how does it survive? THIS CASE IS AMAZING: amzn.to/2hoxgTA
What do you edit with? Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.

I tried to follow the advice in this vid and still somehow managed to get lost in the Louvre. My sense of direction sucks. I was there for over 3 hours and I never found the way to get from section to section without returning to the pyramid to reorient myself. I'm sure pieces of my soul never made it out of the Louvre and are still trapped there right now.

I was lucky enough to study at the Ecole du Louvre, the most renown institute for History of art in France. We had a lot of lectures inside the museum, around the objects. After 3 years we literally had a mindmap of the museum and knew it from ground to roof.

How could you miss out Napoleon's apartments? They were the most spectacular part of the visit for me. I was at the Louvre from 2:30pm until it closed at six and managed to squeeze those in at the end in addition to most of everything else you explored (except Hammurabi's Code, which I couldn't find). I'm glad I did and my shattered legs held out for long enough to have a look.

If you hate selfie sticks, you will really hate them after you go to the Louvre. When we were there, I think some tourists were on a personal mission to take a self in front of each and every piece of art. It's as if they had to prove that visited everything. It's an amazing museum, but I enjoyed the Musee D'Orsay more because it was less crowded when we went in the evening. Not sure if the Louvre is less crowded in the evening, but the lines in the morning were significant.

    • @JaySwanson
      @JaySwanson  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

You can definitely get some good quiet time in the Louvre if you time it right (time of day and time of year) but yeah, the crowds can make it a bit difficult. D'Orsay is amazing. Glad you enjoyed it!

The Metro entrance seemed to be the best to me. When I did the Louvre in 2005, I had a plan of what I wanted to see and planned to make several visits so I saw pretty much everything I wanted to see. I think the biggest piece of art there is the building itself. We're planning a visit for next year and I know it will be on the list and hope I can make it enjoyable for the rest of the group who have never been.

Ha-ha! You revealed the hushed Pont de Lions entrance. I used that entrance to visit often during my first time in Paris in 1975, it was a lifesaver and no one seemed to know about it. Great guide here to getting in without the major tourist hassles and planning to avoid the feeling of being overwhelmed by the sheer volume of artifacts.
The youth discount is available almost everywhere in the EU, but you need to ask for it and carry ID. Don't be put off by some museums that only discount to EU residents, they'll often extend the discount to others--including Americans--if the request is polite, includes a bit of local language (a "bonjour," or a "ya-sas" will open many doors and discounts as long as your children are standing with you and well-behaved).
My last visit to the Louvre was bringing the family in 2004 and our daughter wanted to see the Mona Lisa, which was directly up the stairs from the Pont de Lions entrance, looks like she's been moved to a much larger space. It was the first Sunday free entrance and it took all of 5 minutes to cruise in the Pont de Lions entrance while there were mile-long lines around the plaza waiting to enter through the I.M. Pei pyramid.

It could have been quicker but we took our time once we were inside. I think there may have been 4 or five people in front of us for the security line. My favorite is the Richelieu wing ,those renaissance statues are amazing, the Denon wing have some really great paintings by the various maestros but then when I got to visit The Prado in Madrid thats when I really was amazed by the paintings hanging on its walls. Visitors especially the first timers should allocate a whole day for their visit.

Update as of April 2023 - you need a ticket and reservation or to be a member of the art/museum society associated with the Louvre to enter through the Caroussel du Louvre entrance now. You can’t buy tickets through that entrance… probably changes due to Covid-19, as others have mentioned in the comments!
So if you don’t have tickets when you get there, you will either have to wait in line at the pyramid entrance to buy tickets or buy tickets online and try the caroussel entrance again. I did the latter choice and got a ticket for the next day. Cheers!

    • @JaySwanson
      @JaySwanson  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks Stephanie! I really need to revisit this video. In my experience the Carousel entrance still works, I've gone in that way a few times recently (that's how I went in in my ChatGPT Itinerary video), but tickets do have to be purchased online and in advance.

Another nice video. I remember my first time in the Louvre, October 2014. I got there an hour before it opened w/my Museum Pass, 5th in line, headed straight to Mona Lisa when it opened, only about 10 of us in the room then I headed out. I just followed the signs/pictures of Mona Lisa. I spent about 45 minutes walking through sections with only myself & security in the area. I have a picture of me in front of a corridor connecting 7 rooms & it was only myself & security in each room. June 2016, I was 3rd in line & only me & security in front of Mona Lisa for about 5 minutes. Again, hit another part of the museum & had rooms to myself for a bit. Cant wait to head back in Aug/Sep 2018. Plan on seeing it during the late evenings that it is open during the week.

    Jay,
Enjoyed your mini/economy tour! I'll bet security, while scanning the exterior landscaping, discovered and removed the "threat".
I have a hopefully diverting little story to relate.
My wife and I, with our 14 month old and ~4 year old, took our "trip of a lifetime" in mid-May 1999 (no rain nor mosquitos).
One week in Paris and a week in the Loire River Valley.
We rented an apartment in the 11th arrondissement and saw EVERYTHING Paris had to offer (we were younger, well researched and determined)!
One problem, however.....the George Pompidou, Musee d' Orsay, Sainte Chapelle among others, were on strike (the staffs) including, of course.....the Musee du Louve....now what?
We were never going to be able to return! But, it was announced while we were still in Paris that they would open on the Thursday! Great, but everyone else that was on their trip of a lifetime would ALL be there that day too!
We were clever little tourists and WE also figured out to take the subway (we had maps) to the Louvre underground exit and just sauntered in with ZERO wait. The line outside the Pyramid stretched on forever. We saw hours worth of iconic art....FABULOUS!
The one thing that surprised us was how small the Mona Lisa was.
One of our other little triumphs was obtaining food for us and two tiny tired kids! Just by chance on the second floor hidden just off of one the stairways was an uncrowded absolute most charming outdoor terrace overlooking the inner courtyard and the Pyramid especially on a sunny perfect day. The food and price was quite reasonable considering the ambiance.
I have lots of other interesting happenings to describe about that trip, and your guided walk brought back many fond memories.
    Thanks so much!
    .

I visited the Louvre on somewhat of a short schedule and was able to find exactly what I was looking for which was all the famous sculptures (mona lisa, venus de milo, sphinx, winged nike of samothrace, etc) and then the Egyptian exhibit. It is HUGE and i know there were rooms in the Egyptian exhibit that I didnt get to. Planning for a 2021 summer trip currently and plan to spend at least 2 days visiting the Louvre.

I went to London then Paris for a first anniversary trip in 1996. Stayed at the hotel du louvre. When you go to the Louvre pay the money to have lunch outdoors at the cafe marly. It’s pricey but it was full sunshine in that setting. Totally worth the money For the experience.
We hit the louvre the dorsay and Picasso museums and giverny tour within four days.
Don’t miss the Medici fountain either and the hot cocoa in the tullieries garden. After Paris I enjoy even more our art institute in Chicago.
We also started by the Eurostar first class from London then climbing to the top of Notre dame at sunset for our first look.
    Love your videos.

Have watched a lot of your TH-cam channel.
My wife and I visited Paris in mid-May '99 with our two children ~4yrs and 14 months for 7 days and 7 days in the Loire River Valley.
While we were in Paris the Musee d'Orsy, San Chappelle, George Pampedou (being renovated) , Villanndry Chateau and gardens and the Louvre and others were on strike.
They did open up the Louvre on the Thursday of that week so everyone on THEIR trip of a lifetime were there.
We were sauve tourists and took the subway entrance underneath the Louvre and had NO waiting lines and walked right in as apposed to waiting 3hrs in the center court pyramid entrance.
Among other interesting surprises was how small the the Mona Lisa portrait was.
Another was finding on the second floor, a charming outdoor terrace restaurant overlooking the center courtyard Pyramid with no lines and warm sunlight l.
We saw many of the iconic art works with our realistic viewing wish list and pre-planning.
Please forgive my spelling mistakes, but it's late and I must "crash".

Hiding the tool kit reminds me of being at the Petit Palais on Mother's Day. They wouldn't allow any plants or flowers inside and Mothers were carrying the flowers they had received from family. I went outside and "hid" the roses in plain sight in the flower gardens. They were still there when we left!

I've been in the Louvre only 4 times. I do the tour by "avoid" large crowd game plan. When I see a huge group in front of me, I just moved on and come back to see the whatever that section later, and then either I'm alone in the room or just very few people at the same spot. It's less stress for me and I have more chances to go back and review the art pieces I really love.
