You've conflated two things: (1) it is true that Brosnan wanted more money and therefore he was not asked to come back. (2) But it is incorrect that Barbara Broccoli and co. planned Casino Royale initially with Brosnan starring. It was Tarantino's idea to have Brosnan in his own version of Casino Royale, but that was pure fanasy that had nothing to do with EON Productions, who make the Bond films. Casino Royale was dusted off as the first hard reboot of the series with a new guy in the lead after the success of Batman Begins, which is famous as the first "gritty reboot." But yeah Brosnan was never considered for Casino Royale.
A really great Bond movie, a fantastic re-set and my favourite with Daniel Craig, who is my also my favourite Bond, but I do have kind of a soft spot for Roger Moore who was Bond when I was a teenager. And I would love to see Tarantino do a Bond movie.
Well if you guys want to take a break from listening to Hans Zimmer scores, I advise listening to the Audiobook of "Casino Royale." The Blackstone Audio version is read by DAN STEVENS (your boy!!)
I'd love a more in depth Casino Royale vs Skyfall discussion. I go back and forth between the two as far as which is my favorite Craig edition. I think Casino Royale is perhaps the better movie, but Skyfall is the better Bond film.
Ok so you're correct that Casino Royale was the first adaptation of an Ian Fleming NOVEL since Moonraker, but you've given the impression that no other Fleming stories were adapted during that time which is not true. Also you've given another wrong impression that Moonraker is an actual adaptation of the Fleming novel, when it basically borrowed one or two scenes from the novel and the title, and the rest was completely made up by the screenwriter. For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, and The Living Daylights are all Fleming short stories that lend their titles to Bond movies made AFTER Moonraker. And many of those adaptations are truer to Fleming's source material than Moonraker ever was, though, at the same time, they are crammed with original material. Scenes from Fleming's novels are also frequently repurposed for Bond movies not bearing a Fleming title. Even half of Casino Royale is completely original, though many of the scenes in the latter half of the movie follow Fleming's novel, with some differences.
I disagree about the cinematography and lighting being inferior in Casino Royale. To me, Casino is trying to be more grounded and realistic in comparison to the over the top 1990s Bond and they aren’t going for artistic or spectacle as later Bond films are more about. I think people consider this the best Bond over Skyfall even because of this gritty, character-driven vibe Casino sets, and although Skyfall is perhaps more technically impressive, I think overall that film is more about spectacle rather than Bond’s interpersonal struggles as a 00 agent as Casino does so well.
