The controller will work without any batteries as long as it's plugged into a USB-c port. So it would be cheaper just to plug it into a cable you get with your phone.

To me it makes all the more sense to buy a battery pack then to waste dollars on AA alkalinr batteries for an Xbox One controllers. Sometimes I think that people just don't know the right things to buy for their gaming platforms

Harbor freight ones :D i saw people saying those are bad since rechargeable are 1.2v but thats only nominal voltage all go up to 1.5v

no. you can play with the USB C cable connected with the controller.

Nath343 a docking station better than a wired trust me wire charger brake faster those should be outdated and put out of service
If anyone on PC is wondering about the charge level on the Xbox One X version's USB battery, you can check it under Settings/Devices/Bluetooth & other devices listed as "Xbox Wireless Controller". There should be a little battery icon and a percentage right there. Why this wasn't implemented on the PC Xbox Overlay, I have no idea, but it would have been nice to see the charge at the press of a button rather than Alt-Tab-ing out.
You can literally just press the middle Xbox button on your controller and an overlay with a bunch of information pops up
Mine says 100% even after a 3h gaming sesh. in the bt settings

My game bar shows the battery is nearly empty but the settings says its 100% ???

@@TweitenTech Hey, do you know how long does it takes to fully charge the battery by a wall adapter? (for those who don't have the indicator light on the cable)
Should be about 4 hours, but if you use a higher voltage wall adapter it could take less time.

Totally excellent video and super helpful! I have the old play and charge kit for my one x so I now know this will be fine to pop in my series X and I also have a very long USB c cable already for my phone so I'm sorted. It's interesting to see that the new cable that comes with the kit no longer features the charge indicator light which was the only thing I was going to be missing and now I know it doesn't even have one means I'm just as good as a new kit.. Excellent

360 plug and play kit with 2 packs and a stand to put them on was the best, this is a step back. -i know this is an old video but i recently got my series x
This video was definitely very helpful and answered all my questions except one. How is the Xbox supposed to behave when you plug-in the controller into the X console to charge? Im sure the first time I plugged it in the light on the control and the light on the Xbox both came on and then both went out shortly after. The second time I plugged it in both lights went on, on the Xbox X and the controller and the lights stayed on.
Personal experience: purchased from Microsoft a play & charge kit for new Xbox Series Controller. Wouldn’t recharge, attempted new USB-C cord. Didn’t work. Had to send back to Microsoft and purchase a new kit from them. Second kit works flawlessly.
Hello! Is it okay to use other 3rd party type-C USB cables? Because I read somewhere that not all Type-C cables work for Xbox series controllers (some said that other Type-C cables are only for charging purposes, and cannot be used to connect the controller to the PC when playing without batteries installed). There are several micro-USB to type convertor plugs available on the market. Would they work with the older Charge kits, and also show battery levels?
Yes bro i am using the Generic USB Type C adapter on the Old Xbox Play and Charge kit and it works like a Charm just make sure that your type c adapter support Power Delivery.
One bonus to the official charge pack is you charge it in the controller. After a while removing batteries and batteries pack to charge becomes tedious. Not sure why MS went this route anyway.

Other way was better IMO. Yes you can play while it is charging but for a lot of people that cable is not long enough making it very uncomfortable to continue playing while charging. I liked having a charging station where I could pop the pack out and throw it in the charger and throw in another pack or just regular batteries in the meantime.

I read the review on Amazon, (Microsoft version) and it’s pretty bad. Many are complaining of how it doesn’t charge, nor last. I’m very nervous of purchasing the item. Does it really work?
I've had no issues with mine. I have 2 and they always charge. I'm not sure why others are having issues. If you do have issues, just contact Amazon or setup a return and they will get you your money back. 😊

@@TweitenTech nothing against you it's the wired charger I disagree with it's what you'd call a gimmick every 3 months it brakes everyone is better with a docking charger station keeps people playing and don't have to worry about the wire snapping cracking and Poping and stop's working

I did try to use a Micro-B USB to USB C adapter on the Xbox One Micro USB charger cable to charge my Series X controller to see if the charge light on the cable will work and while it will charge the controller the little cable light itself actually goes dark when plugged into the Series X controller and goes back to white when unplugged (with the Xbox on), so they did seemingly actually remove the ability and not just use a less featureful cable.

What about regular old rechargeable NiMH AA batteries? Will the USB-C port charge them? Or does that port only charge the battery pack? I trust Eneloop NiMH batteries over any brand, including Microsoft.
I like the older one's cable because it has the same colors as the old Xbox one

I ordered one and a controller coming tomorrow. I read a comment in another video comment saying you check how much battery your controller has in Windows's bluetooth menu, (if using on PC)

You can use the old cable with the new controller only if you are using a usb-b to usb-c convertor but the indicator light won't work.

Can it charge 2 rechargeable AA BATTERIES? Right inside the controller?
Nope. But if u have them in and the battery's die u can plug the cable in ur xbox and continue to play (if u can't find some spare battery's that fast)

Here some years later because I just bought the fancy Starfield Limited Edition Xbox controller for my PC and am baffled Xbox STILL doesnt have built in rechargeable batteries. Wanted to make sure these battery packs fit with the controllers original cover.

I have one question that I doubt would be answered but can I charge the battery without the Xbox series s being on?
Like on playstation when you charge your controller when the console is on rest mode is that possible? And if so how can I tell if it's fully charged?
Im looking too. On Reddit I heard in the Xbox equivalent of rest mode it’ll work and some have said even a full shutdown will still charge your controller but not too sure.

Yes! You should be able to use the battery with Xbox One controllers, but obviously the cable won’t work with Xbox One controllers.

U can use the old micro usb charging lead on the new c port controller. You can but a adapter that converts micro usb to usb c 🙂

I have a question. So you charge the Microsoft brand battery pack while it's in the controller which I like btw. And I heard that those battery packs pretty much work the same way as AA batteries. So my question is, could you put rechargeable AA batteries in the controller and charge those while they are inside the controller? If so that would be amazing because then you would never have to swap them out which is a pain in the butt, you could leave them in for a long time and just plug the controller in every so often, and you could buy a bunch of rechargeable AA batteries which are way cheaper and higher mAh capacity than those proprietary battery packs!
Rechargeable AA's will not be charged inside the controller, you have to recharge them in a separate charging station.
Could you confirm please that you can put xbox one battery kit to series controler and is charging, but do not use USB C cable that comes with kit for Xbox Series just grap diferent cable USB C. Some say that battery fits but you can not charge it with any USB C cable only "special" USB C cable can do it. Now I am confiused.
Guys, please do check whether the shop/website you are buying this from has a return policy or not, i bought this from a website which doesn't have return/exchange policy because it was costlier on Amazon, although the product is original from Microsoft, my battery isn't charging, i have already tried dozens of things but couldn't get it working, looks like i just bought a long type c cable for this huge amount, anyway be careful.

When i charged my battery on the XBox One u could actually charge it when your XBox was turned OFF... now on the Series S, can i also turn the XBox OFF and will the battery still charge?? Cause there is no way to tell if it actually does charge with that new usb c cable... with the micro usb you could 😑

If you have “instant on” mode enabled, you shouldn’t need too. Otherwise I think you do.

Hi Tweiten, I just found your video because I'm thinking about getting the Series X soon but my biggest problem is the controller. I mean, I was going to get the PS5 but they are still Sold Out here in my Country so I decided to get the Series X instead, I don't want to change batteries every 5 minutes and I did some research about those Play and Charge Kits for Xbox Series X and I did found one. Can I buy a charging station for the Xbox series x controllers that have the play and charge kit inside?
I’m basically wanting to be able to have that infinite amount of play time without worrying about my controller dying and not be able to play til it’s fully charged. I have the ps5 and I own a charging station for two controllers so when one dies, I immediately switch it out since both are just sitting on the charging station.
That’s basically what I’m looking for with the Xbox series x controller. If I buy rechargeable batteries, is there a charging station I can buy to where I don’t have to plug in any cords and the controllers can just sit on a charging station?

Not sure! You could maybe search for "battery recycling" in your area and see if there's a place you can drop it off at.

It charges to 100% in about four hours. The battery size is 1400 mAh. A full charge gives you about 30 hours of gameplay. 😁

Question! The Amazon Basics pack you recommended, in the description (on Amazon) it doesn't specify whether or not it works with one of the new Series X/S controllers. Just says it doesn't work with Xbox One S/X controllers. Any clarification on this? Tried looking into it further, but I'm not finding anything online. Any help would be much appreciated.
I looked closer at it and I think you might be right! That’s my mistake, sorry. There’s a few others for the Series X/S though. I’d highly recommend getting the Microsoft branded one above all else.
Do you have to have the xbox turned on for the controller to be charging? I dont like having to leave my xbox running while i sleep if i have to have it on all night to charge the controller ill just plug it into my wall adaptor
