The Rose Bowl wouldn't like the idea. They want the power to pick their teams (hence a brand name like Alabama), which you can do only in early rounds. When it gets down to the last two, you are stuck with whichever team makes it that far

Thanks, Joel! New Year's Day Rose Bowl should be the championship game ... and then, open the transfer portal the next day! Perhaps, they can be guaranteed the two semi-finals and one of the quarter finals every year. I always enjoy these college football segments with Colin and Joel.
Will be interesting to see how Michigan does against Washington's OL and Penix's timing and accuracy. Michigan looked really good. But the Alabama center and QB were grab-passing around half the game, which made it a much more containable offense. Not sure UW will contain UM's rush offense all game. Would behoove them to get up early.
If Michigan brings pressure and doesn't give Penix time to throw it'll be hard for Washington to move the ball. I'm just happy the underdogs won, everyone was already planning on a Bama-Texas rematch.
UW's O-line won the Moore award for best in the country, bama's O-line wasn't even a finalist. Texas had 19 pressures and Penix was still like 14-19 of those pressures with, iirc, 2 drops. Zero sacks. only 11 all year. MPJ was 19-20/411 to the WR trio. If UM plays zone, as like 78% of their plays this year, they will be playing catch up by halftime. OSU and Bama moved the ball OK, and UW is lightyears better...
@@wil8115 nobody is expecting Mich to shut down Penix and that offense, the question is if Wash can do it all game against arguably the best defense in college football, can Wash stop Mich run game? I kinda think it should have been FSU and Arguable between Bama/Texas. The FSU Georgia game was 🤷♂️. @@Scallers813 I don’t think fsu gets killed and ima Ohio State fan. They got played. Had Georgia beat bama fsu would’ve been in. All that talk about a QB injury affecting fsu offense and Milroe throws for 116 yards and sacked 726225 times lmao a joke
Truth is… Whether you agree or not GA is better team than Bama and FSU. 🤷🏾♀️ GA played horrible at the absolute worst possible time and mind you still came close to beating Bama! Great season FSU but the committee got this one right but was so wrong about Bama being selected to rep the SEC! No 1 team drops to No 6 and eliminated from the playoffs 1st time ever... pure craziness
That segment on how to fix the portal? That was my thoughts on how to fix opt outs and transfers. Transfer portal comes after the season to improve the quality of the games.
That's a long time to reevaluate your opinion. Especially when it comes to performances on the field. If you're hating on someone for seeing the play in big games and updating their stance you must be someone too stubborn to ever learn anything new.
Bama shoulda stuck with the run game, thats why their 3rd quarter was so good. Unfortunately Milroe is not a QB you can rely on to theow hes more of an athlete that runs. Michigan looked like traditional Bama up front and was more physical. Bama kept it close and but the better team won. Great game
Joe Klatt is such an insightful and entertaining analyst. Amazing segment. I think his points were spot on. Love the tie in between Michigan and Baltimore defenses.
I agree about this year being super exciting and thrilling. NIL is not killing the game. The transfer portal is not killing the game. Now perhaps the NIL needs some guard-rail rules to even things out a bit. When it comes to most Bowls, they've been dead for years...some for decades. Many of these Bowl games were dead way before the transfer portal and the NIL became a thing. The 12-team playoff has been needed for years. And personally I think we need a playoff for the 13-28 teams. The best of the rest kind of tournament. Sort of an NIT like in men's basketball. Make it fun. Keep it interesting. Let there be a reason for the players to want to play 2 or 3 more games.
I love Klatt and Colin together. I don't think Michigan pushed Bama around tho. I do think they matched their physicality, and if you want to say Michigan was slightly more physical I'm fine with that. But both teams had stretches of that game where they imposed their will. Alabama not being able to block Michigan in the 1st Half was more Minter and his pressure paths to me. Michigan has been talked about as a bully all year. I'm still a little surprised at how physical and well coached that defense was. Credit to Harbaugh and Minter and staff
@jamesy1979 Alabama 172 rushing yards. Michigan 130 rushing yards. 25 of which came in OT. Sacks aren't pushing a team around. Ecspecially when most of them came with Michigan sending pressure. Alabama was leaning on Michigan in that 3rd Quarter. Looked like Michigan was wearing down. Then they turned it around and scored and looked like the fresher team in OT. They were acting like it was one sided. It was a hard fought game
@@frankl3518 Bama had their lowest offensive output their entire season, like 280 total yards of offense. They had 172 rushing yards, most of which came on a few big runs, but that was the only thing that worked for them. Michigan had 500 yards of offense against TCU but still got pushed around in the trenches.
@HyzersGR Because Milroe couldn't complete a pass. Michigan's offense was held down too. People are so funny. If Bama scored on the 4th down and went for 2 and got it nobody would be saying Michigan "pushed them around". But because they lost that's the narrative. It was a very competitive game. Both defenses won their matchups
Good point about washington basically looking like Ohio St. I hope it's true and I hope Michigan's defense really is built to stop this type of explosive offense. We'll see. . . .
The Heisman has WAY too many voters. I would bet that at least 75% of the voters are general sports fans who focus on college football as an afterthought, and pay attention only after the baseball season ends. If you watched football all year, you understood that Penix and Nix were the best players in the country. Daniels this year and Williams last year had strong numbers, but were especially strong in November when people who should not have a vote started paying attention.
@@caramelpop9427 Daniles played better? Lost 3 games to 0 games for Penix. Who did Daniels beat? Lost to Bama, Ole Miss, FSU. Only 1 win over a ranked team, Missouri. Washington beat Oregon (twice), Arizona, Oregon St, Utah, USC, and Texas, and haven't lost yet.
The media is so happy that the Michigan beat the Alabama but they are not happy with the Washington beat the Texas team and you can imagine if the Texas team beat the Washington
Alabama has been gradually declining the last several seasons. BUT, that really isn't a knock on Alabama. It's basically what Klatt said. Other teams have been getting talent. Bama used to just get every top 50 player they wanted, stick them on a team, and beat the 2nd best team in the country who had half their talent. Now, you have a lot of teams with talent distribution. The transfer portal hasn't really even taken shape yet. It will make it even wilder. College football has more parody now. It's that simple. People trying to compare any team to some of the older elite Bama teams is just silly. None of the current teams could play with those teams. They had like a dozen first rounders on those teams. It was stupid.
I would disagree to a small extent. Bama has lost a lot of recruits to UGA which had the most first rounders ever in history just 2 seasons ago and produced some recent dominant teams, not to mention both just finished with the #1 & 2 classes. UGA’s only 2 losses in 2 years is Bama. So while it’s true that it’s not just bama the SEC in general has had very dominant teams the last 6 years. Next year with Texas and Oklahoma joining it’ll look a lot like it did this year just with more SEC teams in it.
Alabama got away with paying their players before NIL. Now the market is leveling off. Unfortunately, there's still major bias in the system. Hopefully that gets corrected.
It’s clear after yesterday’s games that the committee finally got it right on the last try under the current system. Best games ever by the best 4 teams in the country.
Both Michigan and Alabama played terrible. This is the end of the season and they couldn’t field punts, couldn’t snap the ball, couldn’t kick field goals or extra points, could not block. This was a close game. Not a good game. Don’t get them confused.
Joel Klatt is always spot on with college football. College football should listen to him about some of this playoff stuff. FCS does it right and FCS fans watch those playoff games as they are all big games to them. FBS, I rarely turn the TV on to any of these boring bowl games, I only wanna see the playoffs and the meaningful games.
Alabama displayed the type of offense that we were told by the experts "was not playoff worthy" as their justification to keep FSU out. I do think Alabama deserved to be in but it just doesn't take away from the absolute robbery that happened to Florida State.
Alabama scored 27 points against Georgia in their Conference Championsship game. FSU scored 16 against Louisville. Yes Alabama was limited in offense this season. Still less limited than FSU was after their QB got injured.
@@daverome9212only 1 starter for FSU played that game. If you think that games means anything more than FSU giving the middle finger to the NCAA then you are a Neanderthal. FYI I’m not even close to being a FSU fan.
Bama’s offense was not even remotely as putrid as FSU’s offense, and they were playing a much better defense than FSU faced against Louisville. What an absurd take.
The NIL evened the score. Alabama and the SEC always paid players, and they covered each other. Now, the money is not the issue. They all pay players. Alabama is just another team.. They are normal now

But I was surprised to see how strong Washington is as a whole. I would bet on Washington to win the title.

Btw, availability is an element of the game and cannot be excused. Next man up!
Love the idea of finishing at the Rose Bowl. Maybe cut the regular season back to 11 games, so conference championships are done the last week of November. Conference champs get a bye, all others play the first week of December, with a two week break before the title game.
The powerhouse schools could easily quit playing the 1 or 2 cupcakes built into their schedule usually the first month of the season.
The Rose Bowl wouldn't like the idea. They want the power to pick their teams (hence a brand name like Alabama), which you can do only in early rounds. When it gets down to the last two, you are stuck with whichever team makes it that far
I am ill today so I’m home so I have watched many shows commentating on the semi finals. This was BY FAR the most interesting with such intelligent takes. Colin and Joel are the BEST! I’m gonna look for Joel on TH-cam
Hands down and for so much at stake......that was the best day I have ever witnessed in College Football. Both games wins decided on the final play ...period.
Is there anything sweeter than knowing that no matter who wins, it won't be an SEC team?
So happy I could cry.
Why? This is like when people hated the Patriots for winning.
I guess the sec we’ll have to settle for 4 out of the last five.
Don't care. Not this year.@@nathanmorris5588
So does that mean the SEC is the best conference?
They should be glad Michigan didn’t have to play Georgia.
Klatt’s idea about ending the season at the Rose Bowl is a great idea and would help fix the cfb schedule (listen to whole thought at end of video)
They do it in college baseball with Omaha the Rose Bowl would be even better
Klatt’s Hampton plug is the funniest thing I’ve ever seen on this segment lmao
One of their best segments all season!
18:45 best plug ever,J.K...I'm a marriott man, myself, but you was smooth with it in the transfer.
To be honest, segment was an all timer.
I see ya Joel with the Hampton by Hilton shout out. Keep them checks rollin, brother.
joel klatt and colin cowherd makes up the best duo ones informational and the other is enthusiastic its just great
Cowherd’s “thank you” when Klatt said Penix deserved the Heisman was perfect
We are part of Michigan! Our son graduated from Michigan, Class of 2023. We were on campus for the past 4 years. We attended the games and activities. I was always a Michigan fan, 2nd generation, however now we are part of Michigan and can say, We Are Michigan! College ball is better than Pro.
Klatt is right, the Rose Bowl makes sense as the championship!!!
Our 2nd to last Klatt/Colin adventure. My favorite segments of the week. THANKS GUYS
Texas fan - I totally agree that last play was open, but honestly Washington outplayed us that whole game. Would have been pretty unfair to win because of the injury timeout
Florida State's full staffed defense would have shut down all for teams! And now we'll never Know!!

I need a video on Colin’s thoughts regarding David Tepper throwing a drink on jaguars fans. That was outrageous
This segment could be an hour. It’s like a warm blanket.
Dude ..making the rose bowl the national championship game on New Year’s Day is genius.
The number of times I saw Penix throw a ball against OR and TX where I think to myself, "I don't know how you defend that", is remarkable. We'll see if that translates against MI.
Jayden Daniels was probably the 4th best option for the Heisman this year
This is the best insight I’ve heard. Great video!!
Joel have you noticed how much you agree with Colin’s takes? It just means the student is paying attention in class. Congrats on being the optimal college football professor.
I love these two guys together. Im going to miss them in the off season.
Also that Hampton plug by Klatt, and stare at the camera was hilarious. Good job by you.
Thanks, Joel! New Year's Day Rose Bowl should be the championship game ... and then, open the transfer portal the next day! The biggest objections might come from Orange, Sugar, and Fiesta Bowls which may want to stick with New Year's Day. Perhaps, they can be guaranteed the two semi-finals and one of the quarter finals every year. I always enjoy these college football segments with Colin and Joel.
SEC schools should not have to go to the West Coast every year.
The best back and forth in sports media. Klatt + Coward = Gold
Michigan was actually the Vegas favorite against Bama
C.J Stroud threw for 400 yds, J Smith-Njigba and G Wilson both had over 100 yds in 2021 against Mich, all 3 were and are top NFL prospects and Ohio State still lost by 2 touchdowns.
@@C-S. not stop it but hopefully limit it. UW has already beaten 7 better rushing teams than UM. the UM defense stats are padded. take away 8 of the worst 34 offences in all of 133 teams, UM is 47th in scoring D, 8th in yd/g, dont have time to look up all the passing stats but they gave up 278avg vs the OK teams they played. and UW has already beaten 8 better offences then UM played ALL year inc bama.. If they cant get to him under 3 secs, he will pick them apart, good luck vs that Oline. they looked great vs Texas and had a good D-line to..
I was very impressed with Ewers' post game press conference. I haven't seen him like that. I'm already curious about the QB room next year
2024 and still the best segment on sports television
One of the best segments in a long time
It was either Bama or fsu. Georgia couldn’t get in if they didn’t win their conference when Bama did.
It should’ve been fsu no matter what.
I kinda think it should have been FSU and Arguable between Bama/Texas.
The FSU Georgia game was 🤷♂️. Georgia killed us, but we had 17/22 starters opt out which would not have happened in the playoffs so we get no clarity at all there. Maybe FSU gets killed, maybe not. Can’t say but it stinks we didn’t get a chance.
@@Scallers813 I don’t think fsu gets killed and ima Ohio State fan. They got played. Had Georgia beat bama fsu would’ve been in. Problem is they wanted a sec team in, they couldn’t put bama without Texas so fsu was collateral damage. All that talk about a QB injury affecting fsu offense and Milroe throws for 116 yards and sacked 726225 times lmao a joke
@@polo4941 100%
Truth is… Whether you agree or not GA is better team than Bama and FSU. 🤷🏾♀️
GA played horrible at the absolute worst possible time and mind you still came close to beating Bama!
100% this
Joel literally said he’d take McCarthy over Penix like 7 weeks ago
That's a long time to reevaluate your opinion. Especially when it comes to performances on the field. If you're hating on someone for seeing the play in big games and updating their stance you must be someone too stubborn to ever learn anything new.
This was a great segment.......Truth all throughout!
Great game
Bama kept it close?! Bama had the lead the final 20 minutes of the game until a minute and change in the game when um tied it up.
Joe Klatt is such an insightful and entertaining analyst. Amazing segment. I think his points were spot on. Love the tie in between Michigan and Baltimore defenses.
The Michigan Wolverines have THE best fight song AND helmet logo in the country hands down 🎤🫳
Agreed 💯
I love Klatt's idea for the Rose Bowl and the change in schedule
Klatt roasted Jmac so bad at the end 😂
Great segment. Will miss it in the offseason. The chemistry makes me feel at home
I could listen to these two together for hours. Does Joel have a good podcast?
Joel’s 100% right with the Rose Bowl being the championship game.. it’s called the granddaddy of em all for a reason!!!!!
Now Joel, there's no need to attack Blockbuster.
As big a FlipFlop Colin is to the NFL, he is great at College Football
100% agree with Joel on the changing of schedule
KLATT ON TUESDAY
the talent being spread around is so great
now we don’t have a couple of programs hogging up all the 5-stars
I love Klatt and Colin together. I don't think Michigan pushed Bama around tho. I do think they matched their physicality, and if you want to say Michigan was slightly more physical I'm fine with that. But both teams had stretches of that game where they imposed their will. Alabama not being able to block Michigan in the 1st Half was more Minter and his pressure paths to me. Michigan has been talked about as a bully all year. I'm still a little surprised at how physical and well coached that defense was. Credit to Harbaugh and Minter and staff
Don’t think Michigan pushed Bama around?
Michigan 6 sacks, 10 TFL
Bama 1 sack, 1 TFL
Michigan dominated line of scrimmage on both sides period....
They start off blathering so much over Sark and losing Texas play rather than giving kudos to Dawgs D and Penix shredding the secondary. Priorities..😮
Michigan is the MOST WINNING College Team in History. FACT. No need to prove anything.
Good point about washington basically looking like Ohio St. I hope it's true and I hope Michigan's defense really is built to stop this type of explosive offense. We'll see. . . .
a healthy Michael Penix is on display. he played hurt the last 5 games. he is saving his best for the Natty. Go Huskies!!!
Lol how that go
Always Cowherds best segment of week. Not news to anyone I know but still true
thank you Klatt for that rant about Penix not winning the Heisman! the voters did not watch Husky football
Daniels played better than Penix all year, Daniels was the right choice

Great segment, my appreciation of college football is getting better.
Alabama is not declining when they have won 10 plus games each season the past 15 yrs. It's NIL and college free agency.
Florida State's full staffed defense would have shut down all for teams! And now we'll never Know!!

@@GayleWagaman the two playoff games came down to a final play. That's pretty much getting the matchups right.
Literally every level of football, from high school to the NFL, gets playoffs right except for FBS.
Well Georgia vs Florida State says Florida State wasn't worthy
@@daverome9212only 1 starter for FSU played that game. If you think that games means anything more than FSU giving the middle finger to the NCAA then you are a Neanderthal. FYI I’m not even close to being a FSU fan.
Bama’s offense was not even remotely as putrid as FSU’s offense, and they were playing a much better defense than FSU faced against Louisville. What an absurd take.
Noles 13-0 Non opted. The best in the top 4.
Klatt is the best man. He should be the commissioner of the playoff/wherever college football is going
The NIL evened the score. Alabama and the SEC always paid players, and they covered each other. Now, the money is not the issue. They all pay players. Alabama is just another team.. They are normal now
