At first was sad that Saban retired, then I was happy Dabo was not coming, then I was sad Kiffin did not get the job, now I am excited about DeBoer and all his coaches coming. What a roller coaster week. I have faith in DeBoer after researching him. ROLL TIDE!
As an Alabama fan and having talked with a lot of other bama fans, I can say I think we are all excited about the future. We need a great dc hire that can recruit the south
I got to say, Joel, Bama fans seem pretty reasonable about their expectations going forward. They're also surprisingly excited about DeBoer too. There was a hint of staleness the last 2 years in Tuscaloosa with fans not really being TOO energetic about the future because they all knew the clock was close to hitting zero on Saban, and the only thing they had left was the anxiety of, "Will he or won't he?" in regards to Saban retiring. With this new era of unrestricted financial warfare of college football- combined with the expanded new SEC -there was some uncertainty about where exactly they will stand in the near future. At least now they know, and can reorganize accordingly.
Unless we can discover thousands of oil wells in Alabama, Texas will buy whichever player they want off everyone else's teams. Everyone say saban could not compete on a level playing field? Where is this level playing they are talking about? They have thrown the rulebook out the window because Saban OUT WORKED everyone and nobody wanted to do that so..
Of course it was DeBoer's job. Sexton planned and organized it. I'm pretty sure he hired Sexton before UW offered their extension after the first Oregon game btw, so that means Sexton specifically told KDB to hold off on signing because he already knew about Saban.
…and the best of college football is yet to come…really Joel as I see coaches and players selling out for the highest bid…sad…not to mention historical conferences being broken up.
Saban is still in the building. We also got their Oline coach who is the best in the country. And their " GM " which i believe alabama has been lacking since NIL started. The coach cant do everything anymore universities need GM's to build rosters and help recruit.
I don’t think many other SEC schools have GMs either, but it might be necessary if NIL and the portal aren’t regulated soon. It certainly helps take a load off the head coach. One issue Bama needs to resolve quickly is NIL. Saban took the position that he wasn’t going to try to match offers when other schools tried to poach players in the portal (or recruiting). Saban was the only coach (maybe Kirby) who could get away with that, but Bama fans internalized this philosophy, and Bama lagged in setting up its NIL collective and securing donations. There’s plenty of money in the fan base (unless you’re comparing it to Texas or TAMU and a few others), but it hasn’t been donated for NIL. This is probably why Bama hasn’t tried to match any NIL offers. That’s going to have to change, at least until DeBoer establishes himself.
Bamas offense just got a huge upgrade. If Deboer can get TRob or a good DC I see Bama winning at least 10 games next year. Maybe better. The portal has been scary but I believe it will shake out just fine. Tough schedule for Bama next year for sure.
I think Bama makes a strong run at a title next year, but I was rather unimpressed with the press conference. Good thing press conferences don’t win ballgames.
DeBoer hire is an excellent hire! I am so looking forward to a DeBoer BAMA team. Now we know his O coaches are mostly following him, I'm even happier. However, he has to stop the hemorrhaging of talent, in particular Caleb Downs. 🤞 However, Milroe being a Heisman contender is a ridiculous statement just as it was ridiculous talk last season. He will not be the QB in a Ryan Grubb O, in fact I wouldn't surprised if he transferred after spring training. Milroe is a RB playing QB, Grubb will ensure he has a QB playing QB.
I love the hire but yes, at Alabama, he'll be judged by championships. Not rocket science. DeBoer is a winner and if he's up to the challenge, he's in the best place possible.
Cool 😎 Alabama. Coach Nick Saban 🐐 knew the Process. Let's Go Coach KD. Remember this name. Amari Jefferson from Chattanooga, TN Baylor High School 🏫 2x State appearance at the WR Position. Football 🏈, Baseball ⚾️ Player. Roll Tide Roll vs the Process. Thank you 🙏
This is not what happened. DeBoer was choice one. Greg Byrne IMMEDIATELY flew to Seattle when Nick Saban announced. Please stop the disinformation. Kalen will win at Alabama year one and his brand is so much fun that players will flock to him.
Excellent points. The only thing Bama fans ultimately care about is winning, and if he does, he will be the new king. The major downside, as you noted, is that Bama seems to have been entirely unable to leverage the brand equity Saban had built up for them over so many years. Instead of a transition to someone who had coached there and himself become part of the brand, most or all of that is just going to be lost. And, of course, it’s that brand that enabled them to recruit so well without nearly the NIL costs that other schools have.
I love that they hired outside the Saban tree. That time is over, and Bama has to move forward. Focusing on the Bryant/Bama tree put us in a bind for years. Get the best coach you can and forge the next part of the tradition.
I like the guy. If it wasn't for his lack of SEC and southern ties, he would be perfect. He is process oriented, he cares about how you prepare and he's a stoic individual. He's not a "rah rah" coach, which I don't think would have for well at Alabama. Recruiting and building defenses, to me, are his only question marks and I don't see an issue with him doing it. I love the hire. We have to give him a chance to build it his way. Roll Tide!
Bama fans don't expect him to be the next coming of Saban. We just expect and believe he can keep Alabama playing at a high level. Most voices saying otherwise are fans of other teams projecting.
Dabo benefited from an elite coaching staff and elite Qb play from 2015-2018... after the loss to LSU in 2019, he started to fall off. This bew coach is a homerun hire.
Yep. The loss of Brent Venables (and his signal stealing) really hurt Clemson too. That D was no longer elite once he left. Dabo also just refused to adapt his offense or make staff changes once he didn’t have an elite QB and things started to get stale. Refusing to use NIL and the portal is just adding insult to injury. And his personality just isn’t a good fit at a blue blood program.
I hope I am wrong but I do not think that Alabama misses a beat with this particular coaching hire...........they will be just as good if not better......the offense will be more prolific than ever.......I am sorry to say.
I think this is gonna be one of those what happened hire's in 5 years. Seen it plenty of times where everyone thinks its a good hire but then obvious things start to show it's not and then everyone acts surprised. Not saying Kalen is a bad coach but it's not gonna be easy going into a conference you've never even coached in. People can say it worked for Brian Kelly. And that's true but Brian has been a head coach for over 20 years. He's got the experience to deal with that pressure. I don't think this guy does 2 good years with a lucky good QB just doesn't scratch that itch for me. Hopefully im wrong tho.
Oregon has been hugely successful at recruiting so it can be done. DeBoer’s recruiting has been abysmal especially given the success at UW. Interesting fact is this was the first year ever that not a single player committed to the UW from the state of Washington. Alabama can recruit itself but DeBoer’s recruiting prowess is awful. He left everywhere he’s been in short order
But Joe what everyone is missing is bama fans and there expectations. They will be comparing everything this man does to saban. Not only that but they aren’t giving full control to kalen like they did with nick and they shouldn’t because he hasn’t earned that yet but it’s gonna open the door for outside influencers who have deep pockets and the minute things start going haywire, and they will, he will be met with incredible pressure. Tide fans won’t accept 9 wins or even 10. He has no idea what he has signed up for.
I don't disagree with you, especially with the younger part of our fanbase that has only known Saban. I'm hopeful that Bama fans around my age (born in the mid 80s) and older will be realistic...because we remember the lean years when 1992 was the only national championship we saw between Bryant and Saban. I can remember a lot of depressing seasons.
Who says DeBoer isn’t getting full control of the program? Yeah, Saban is in the building as a resource, and that’s a delicate balance, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be running the program. That arrangement can work. See UNC basketball, where Roy Williams had full control and won multiple NCs despite Dean Smith still being on campus.
That’s bogus. They lost 4 players… far from “all.” Same thing happened at UW. Rome Odunze, Jaylin Polk all hitting portal but DeBoer pulled them back in. Give him a chance. The biggest threat to Kalen DeBoer is a bunch of arrogant entitled fans.
@@raybo665 I agree, people forget Saban lost 6 games his first year at Alabama. I knew receivers would leave if there was any chance Milroe was going to be the QB again.
Debo, in my opinion, is a sacrificial lamb. Sure, he’s a good coach - So is everyone w/ a HC job. Debo didn’t recruit those players at UW. He made it to the natty & his defense got exposed, eventually lost to what most agree was a good, not great UM team. 2 yrs ago the guy was at Fresno state. I’m sorry… that’s not enough time to build a resume worthy of Alabama. He doesn’t know the SEC, or is at least, unfamiliar. And it appears he’s simply bringing UW down south. Recruits don’t know this guy. Current team doesn’t know this guy. He appears kinda stale & uninspiring in his presser. I think he’s in way over his head. I just don’t know why we didn’t give it to Kiffin. Yes, I know he can be a frat boy at times, but he doesn’t do anything malicious. He’s just likes to rib from time to time. He clearly loves Alabama. Recruits know him. The team knows him. He’s familiar. AND! He’s a good coach. Look where he has OM. They’re gonna be top 5 next season. This means he’s comfortable w/ the portal & he knows the south. He wanted the job. He can handle the job. I know people love playing for him. He has a youthful exuberance. He can relate to recruits. Ugh! Coach Debo is a fine coach… I just think we missed the boat.

A circus follows lane bro, Alabama is after that win no matter what type of mentality from a coach which I hope happens but we will see
Relax Klatt, everyone here in Alabama is super excited to have coach DeBoer and he will have all the support he needs. Welcome coach, RTR!
Klatt was all over this last week before any other talking head. He mapped it out perfectly. Nice work Joel, great research on your part.
