  • This has become my favorite HOB filter
    Lots of space for filtration media and silent operating HOB
    In this video I demonstrated how I cut and add a small inlet sponge to prevent shrimps from sucking in.

    Wow, I was searching everywhere for a video where someone would show underneath to see if you could fit a sponge on the inlets. Not only did you show us that you then went and added the sponges! Thank you!

      the slots are too wide, a small cardinal tetra could get sucked in.

      @@dc99yt Maybe you could attach the sponge to the outside with sewing thread? Might be a bit fiddly and I haven't tried on this filter but I've seen it done on some other filters before.

    Excellent! Just what I was looking for in terms of proofing it for small creatures; bonus at the end is that you put it on a cube just like the one I want to buy. Brilliant!

    Hello! Im so glad you showed the intake sponge trick where you did the small customisation which was super clear, and also how you included the max flow. Not many people show that and that certainly helped! 👍🔥

    Brilliant, thanks , now we have the perfect filter for most people, that little bit of modification completes the picture, and it didn’t appear to restrict the flow rate at all , great filter a little more expensive than the average but more than worth. It ...Pity you didn’t narrate but no need to really was there , great way to show details, well done .

    I placed a plastic mesh at the bottom of mine so the sponge does not get squished into the open holes and limit water intake. No overflow and much better filtration I have found. Full flow and no bypass. I use about 3 inches of course sponge. Half inch of filter floss, a bag of Seachem Matrix and a bag of Seachem Purigen. All fits with no restrictions. Crystal clear water.

    Nice, I love my Tidal 35. I use it in my 87L Fluval vista tank filled with goldfish. My setup contains polyester fill on the bottom, then the stock blue sponge, the matrix, and finally I add a bag of Activated Carbon. My water is crystal clear.

  • @jaydeef5187
    @jaydeef5187 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The first thing you should do is drill 50 more holes in the bottom of the media basket for better water flow. I cover all my intakes with polyfil then 2 layers of poly in between 2 coarse sponge layers, purigen layer then topped with matrix and can go 3-4 months without disturbing the inside filtration.

    Nicely done video and it was interesting to watch. However, I don't think putting a sponge in the filter inlet is a very good idea unless you really need to prevent a very small fish fry or tiny shrimps to get inside. In a normal situation, you should allow bigger particles and debris floating in the water to get inside of the filter, and it's the job of the internal sponge (the one placed in the basket) to filter bigger particles, dirt, and other tank debris. If you put a sponge in the filter inlet it will get clogged very quickly due to its tiny capacity defeating the whole purpose of the filter, and you'll be forced to clean that sponge much more frequently as if you'd normally clean the filter otherwise. I really don't recommend doing it unless you have a very specific reason for putting a sponge in the inlet, like very small fish or shrimp.

      got to remove it first, then you may change with a new piece or wash it. Use the current one to cut for a new or spare pieces. I always keep an extra as a cutting model incase I needed to cut a new piece for almost every sponge or wool for my filters.

    • @BehindTheScape
      @BehindTheScape  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you’re referring to the chamber, there is a blue sponge that comes with it, included in the box. You could use it as a reference to cut more foams.
      If you’re referring to the in take that I slot it in. I am using the typical inlet sponge that you could buy in your local fish shop and cut into the size that would fit in. They look like a cylinder shape sponge with hole. I would recommend the smaller one.

    I saw a video complaining about the surface skimmer being incredibly loud when the water level was to low. I fill my 20 gallon open top rimless tank close to the top once a week during water changes. Have you noticed this being a common problem? Would I be fine with my weekly maintenance schedule?

    • @apaulmcdonough2170
      @apaulmcdonough2170 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      As long as you have the water surface level high enough to keep the Outflow Ramp under the Surface, as seen here, Tidals are very quiet.
      It's okay to "top up" between Water Changes, as long as you keep to your schedule.

      The more media you have in the filter, the more beneficial bacteria that will help to keep your Ammonia in check. Just have to make sure it doesn't restrict the return flow. And I would NEVER put extra media in the intake because it will cause your pump to work hard and possibly cause it to burn out prematurely!

    Seachem basically tried to do something so stupid as to add the surface skimmer to a filter which is not needed unless you don’t do water changes often also 70 percent of the filter water is from the skimmer the ones that have the telescopic tube don’t even suck in dirt from there because is so weak because it is using the skimmer as its primary intake also it’s not a self-cleaning impeller you need to clean that or you will notice your water not flowing as well and your motor will burn out.
