This is a really well made filter, can hold a decent amount of media and is very easy to upgrade.
In this video I used biogravel as it makes the most use of the available space but any good porous media will vastly boost the performance of this filter as it only comes with a tiny amount of 'matrix' which is a low grade white pumice.
Apart from the biogravel you could use biohome ultimate as a good alternative if you want a bigger media or Eheim substrat pro if biogravel is not available in your country - all will do a great job.
In the UK we are quite a long way behind the US with regard to the amount of HOB filters which are available but this one is certainly one of the best I have looked at so far in this series - just a shame it comes with so little media as without an upgrade it wouldn't filter much water.
Don't just fill the available space in this filter with foam as that would be a ridiculous waste of potential.
    WHAT IS A FULL CYCLE?
If someone tells you the aquarium nitrogen cycle ends with the production of nitrate that is incorrect - please read on
A full cycle is completed by bacteria - the aerobic part of biological filtration which processes ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate followed by an anaerobic part which processes nitrate into soluble nitrogen which bubbles off to the atmosphere.
Therefore it requires a suitable amount of excellent quality filter media to be able to provide the environment for both aerobic AND anaerobic bacteria - that is what Biohome ultimate does perfectly but even with such good media there are limitations and we recommend the following amounts for different stocking scenarios:
    (1 US gallon = 3.8 litres)
    (1kg = 2.2 lbs)
Average community tropical aquarium = 1kg per 100 litres
    Average coldwater aquarium = 1kg - 1.5kg per 100 litres
    Predator aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Large cichlid aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Malawi / Tanganyikan aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Marine aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Average mixed fish pond = 1kg per 200 litres
Average koi pond = 1kg per 150 litres
You may be disagreeing with the above figures but remember that they are for a FULL CYCLE not half a job - achieving 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite is quite easy since aerobic bacteria grows freely on any surface but the anaerobic bacteria responsible for COMPLETING the cycle needs more a specialized habitat.
Size a filter properly, set it up sensibly and you will have perfect water - it's that simple....and your filter won't be the dreaded 'Nitrate factory'.

Thanks Richard!! The cover is used as a tray to carry the dripping basket to your cleaning area. Also there is a blue tab in close proximity to the top dial that is used to retain the white basket in place in case there was some restriction in flow it prevents the basket from lifting up. Also the skimmer section is always drawing water so even with the intake tube fully open the water is still drawn at about 50/50 between the two. still the pre filter is always a good idea when small fish are stocked. My eyes just about popped out of my head and my jaw dropped simultaneously as you used the original super coarse filter insert in the space where the water is directed to the underside of the basket. I'm going to do that as soon as I hit enter after this comment. Thanks for the great video and ideas. Regards "The Canadian"

    • @Eclectic-Human
      @Eclectic-Human 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Tried filling the space with a medium foam, the restriction made the water bypass in the top area of the intake. Reducing the flow to almost "0" stopped the bypass. Had to remove it. The volume of water was just too much to add a restriction in that area. I'm overstocked so volume is important to my setup.

I have a Tidal 55. Some notes; most of the water does not actually get drawn through the lower intake tube; the pump housing is vented so that draws some water even if you restrict the intake tube completely via dial. The majority of the water IMO is drawn from the surface skimmer which cannot be completely turned off.
I've modified mine to have a fine foam inside the pump housing to restrict water flow from the vents, as well cutting out a coarse foam and securing with zip ties to cover the surface skimmer to avoid small fish from getting sucked in. I've also used a large intake sponge on the intake tube.
Also to note: the basket dimension increases from bottom to top, which means when you are cutting foam, you want to cut it to be slightly larger than the one below it. I tried using the original included foam pad as a stencil and realized by the time I was cutting my medium foam pad it was not large enough allowing water to bypass it. Better to cut a little larger and have it squeeze to fit!

I operate a Tidal 110 on a 55-gallon goldfish aquarium, as a secondary filter to my Fluval 406. My 406 is configured with Biohome Ultimate, and as recommended by Pond Guru. And I have more Biohome Ultimate in the Tidal filter, along with some Eheim Substrat Pro. I was drawn to the Tidal series because of the integrated surface skimmer. As a matter of fact, I operation mine without the down tube at all.
One thing anyone who has a Tidal will learn is that you can't go too fine on the mechanical filtration. You'll end up with a lot of bypass behind the media media basket, unless you clean the filter often (like weekly). Also, if you noticed, there are two rectangular holes on the top front of the media basket. This appears to be there to allow some by-design basket bypass. Since my Fluval is doing the bulk of the filtration, in the Tidal I use Eheim Mech to diffuse the flow and a custom cut Aquaclear 110 sponge. I place all the bio-media on top of that.
With that said, I think Pond Guru's recommended mechanical filtration configuration, while a sound approach, is not ideal for the Tidal... at least based on my experience. The medium foam may be too fine.

These are decent filters. I used these Seachem 110 and the Seachem 35 to replace all the Marineland, Fluval and Aquatec filters I had.
What I don’t like about these filters and what I hope Seachem changes is the
    1) The inability to completely shut off the skimmer
    2) How easily these get clogged
    3) The annoying blue coloration of the dials.
    4) The weird shape of the basket ( it should just be square like the Fluval hang on the back filters ).
These make a lot of noise when they are clogged or when the water level in the aquarium gets to low ( understandably so ).
To rectify these issues I painted the dials with a flat black Krylon fusion spray paint.
I put a handful of ceramic rings on the bottom of the basket to trap heavy muck and slow down the water flow before entering the media basket.
I then put the mechanical media on top of it using bulk media I purchased from a Pond supply company.
The intake tube is worthless. most of the water cycling through the filter is being drawn in by the skimmer feature and the slots under the pump.
Some people will cover the i skimmer with a slim piece of foam or a nylon stocking. In my opinion that rather pointless.
But this is what I do. I hope it helps someone.

A WORD OF WARNING: Though i love everything about this filter, i have found one super annoying situation. I have neon blue dwarf goby. Three of them. These are GREAT little guys. Here's the problem. Wild caught. They are from areas of natural flowing water [think rivers/streams]... so, what's the problem/warning you ask? I keep finding them INSIDE my Tidal 55 HOB filters external water/media reservoir. That's right. They jump UPSTREAM. And they want to hang out INSIDE the HOB filter's reservoir. So, if your neon blue dwarf gobies (or any other wild caught dwarf gobies go missing for a few days... CHECK YOUR RESEVOIR TANK -- very carefully. 119

I use both aqua clear and tidal filters. Both are good. Neither one has a real problem with bypassing the filter basket as so many comments contend. The filter media slows down the flow, but that's not a bad thing. It means its doing its job. A slow flow is more actively worked on by the bacteria. Water has to bypass to some extent because not everyone cleans their filter media when it needs cleaning. I feel sorry for the manufacturers of all these filters because what with the many varied characters reviewing these products and then complaining about them, they must despair that they could ever make anything to satisfy them.

I FOUND YOUR WONDERFUL CHANNEL LOOKING ABOUT THIS NEW FILTER I GOT .I`VE BEEN USEING AQUACLEAR FOREVER BEING A FISHCLAN ADOPTED 60`s scoop wich is a stolen baby that's was already 2lsb smaller ten at birth so at 2weeks 5lbs and $10 to a very rasist white teacher but back to the fish I`ve had a tank since 10 so 42 years of havng aquariums and If I choose to use this like the aqua clear I put an old charchol filter cartrage and cut and use an elastic to keep the fry from getting sucked up.I have bought as well as cut sponge like you showed but the cheese cloth or used filter bag cut and from a corner put in the bottom of the filter shaft in the water that draws up the water and cover the bottom with just enough to cover the holes that pull up the crap and use an elstic to keep the covering on.This is better then foam as it makes the most sucktion possible,Thanks again your 1 of the best fish channels out there and I have my top 3 and you just went to the TOP!!!!From Windsor Ontario Canada across the river from Detroit. Many Blessings to you and your family!

I own this filter, the problem i found with it is when it overflows it means the water bypasses all the sponges and mucks up your media, to solve this you have to drill extra holes around the base of the basket and this will stop the water overflowing and force it through the sponges as its intended to do.

Only thing you have to watch is as the sponges and media start to work and catch debris you'll have to turn the flow down on the filter. If not the water will bypass the basket and come up over the back of it.

I have 2 of those filters. I like them but they do have a flaw! If you forget to clean them that pump is so powerful it will force water out around the removable basket. There is so much force behind this water it will lift the lid and spray water out of the filter and behind the tank. Tilting the filter forward helps this but doesn't eliminate it. They also seem to get dirty fast because they move so much water. You almost have to turn them off at feeding time or they will pull the food in before the fish can eat it clogging the filter even more. Part of this is caused by the adjustment for the surface skimmer. You can turn the bottom inlet off but you can't turn the skimmer off! I use a WiFi socket to turn the filters off it is set to turn them back on after 10 min.

This filter is listed as pushing over 400gph...you can pack the rear with as much bio gravel as you want but your never going to see any nitrate reduction from it...the water is simply moving too fast for anaerobic bacteria to cultivate...even if you do by chance get it, it will be so miniscule that you'll never even notice....for anaerobic bacteria to even have a chance to grow, the water flow needs to be around 50gph or even less.

I have a Tidal 55 and I don't use it anymore. It needs constant maintenance since it clogs so quickly. I cringed pretty hard when I saw the extra foam being added everywhere(except the intake as that wouldn't be factored in the clogging). This filter is extremely prone to bypassing since the media 'basket'(more like box) doesn't have large enough holes in the bottom. Anything that would make water struggle to get through will just make it bypass more.
Aquaclears are a much better choice since they handle bypass in a much smarter way(by having holes on the sides of the basket), as well as have a media basket that actually allows water through.

I always put in a power switch on the cord, so when I do service my HOB filter, I don't have to unplug it. Some power strips look like an octopus orgy with all the plugs and wires....and are not in the easiest of places to reach. And then you go to unplug the filter...and all of a sudden the plug has the power of the Gods keeping it plugged in!!! LOL
So nice to just flick a switch (about 6 inches down from the filter, so you can easily access it) to stop power to the pump. Only takes about 5 minutes to install the switch.

I've made a similar modification to my Tidal 110. I've decided I won't be purchasing another until they've made some revisions. These filters are fantastic, until you take into consideration the amount of bypass that develops as soon as you start packing in media. I also don't like that the intakes are not adjustable at all, I'd prefer to be able to close off ALL of the intakes individually to be able to control where the water comes in from. I stuffed a piece of coarse foam into the intake where the impeller sits in order to prevent fish from entering through the lower intake, as well as the slits under the bottom of the motor. I also put the foam on the inside the same as what you did and my medium and coarse foams. After adding all the media, the water can't pass through the media fast enough and ends up leaking out the face of the unit.

I recently reviewed this filter in multiple stages on a 125-gallon well-established/aquascaped freshwater tank with a coarse prefilter sponge on the intake to prevent shrimp loss.
Stage1- Brand New - Results: Ran beautifully while I watched the unit. Didnt see any shrimp getting sucked into the skimmer side - the setting was set for max intake ...with 0 setting on the skimmer.
Stage2- Ran for 2 weeks Results: Started to notice the knob to the skimmer would vibrate open or slide open... as mine was relatively loose//easy to move. Which took intake suction away and I notice shrimp going missing. They had been sucked up into the filter. a couple didn't make it... and I managed to save the others luckily.
stage3- 45 days into the usage Results: Constant adjusting the loose dial for the flow continues... Multiple dead shrimp and a ugly floam fix to prevent the rest from going into the filter... also I notice that the dial even with all the way closed to the skimmer... still doesn't make a good suction diversion... making the intake at the bottom severely hindered in its ability to gather that garbage.
The flow rate was around 450 gallons per hour... but as most of that water moving didn't get passed through the pre filter or the bottom of the water column... it makes this filter a poor choice for tanks that have a need more controllable and easily maintained filtration.
    Conclusion:
If you want the suction to only come from the bottom column where the majority of the removal of waste and debris needs to occur at... this is not the filter for you
If you have shrimp or baby fish... This is not the filter for you
If you want a set it and forget it filter... This is not for you
If you want pure water movement for the same price as an Aqua Clear 110 but does a worse job... The Tidal 110 is your filter.

Just a tip, you need to actually test the filters after you pimp them. This mod does not work. Putting a medium sponge on the bottom slows down the flow too much and the water just comes out from all the overflow points (of which there are many), essentially creating bypass. I thought the bypass wasn't serious at first, but I had this setup for weeks and the medium sponge was pristine by the end of it like the water hadn't touched it.
In the end I found that even putting that much biomedia in will create the same problem. You really can't put much more in this filter than what they give you out of the box.

    • @tomsmith5456
      @tomsmith5456 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Karl ...Very true I’ve been forced to only use the supplied sponge and the Seachem Matrix , any other addition causes the little blue float to pop up because the overflow is running into the float chamber ..Seems a pity that, and I can’t find a way round it ..But it still keeps my tank crystal clear .

This doesn't actually work in real life, there are too many gaps between the basket and outer case, water just bypasses with anything but stock sponge and media. You can improve it by plugin holes with floss, and by cutting out the grate from the bottom of the basket. The grate serves no real purpose and is a massive obstruction. The sponge literally only gets dirty between the slits in the basket. I just cut out all of the cross grates except the middle one, and it is A HUGE improvement. Triples the flow, and nearly eliminates bypass

  • @joec2174
    @joec2174 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

After long time use I come to realize this filter has a pump and a media basket that isn’t really paired to each other. You have to adjust your flow rate depending on media stocking. It will by pass from day one if heavily stocked with media and you leave the flow on high. It’s adjustable and sea chem fails to identify the need to pair the flow to media stocking amount and type. That’s the secret to this filter.

    • @sethbclark
      @sethbclark 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The real secret is to cut out the grate at the bottom of the basket, you will more than triple the flow through the sponge and make the dreaded bypass basically non existent. There is so much plastic blocking the flow through the sponge, the water has nowhere else to go except to bypass. I also plug the bypass points with filter floss, I tuck it in anywhere where I see water flowing out of.

Hi I wonder if you can help me understand something. What is the importance of a 'full cycle' that I keep hearing you refer to? I mean I understand what you are saying, its converting Nitrate instead of just Ammonia and Nitrite, but what is the importance of that? Nitrate is not toxic to fish as far as I know (in reasonable amounts)? I have a 300 litre tank and a 70 litre tank and they both run on very simple sponge filters hooked up an air pump, I change 25% of the water twice per week, it takes about 20 minutes using a python syphon and my Ammonia is always 0, Nitrite is always 0, Nitrate is always under 20 ppm. I mean as long as I am removing the Nitrate with regular water changes then I can't understand what I would achieve if I had a 'full cycle' that gave 0 Nitrate? Thanks for any help.

  • @haulinashe

Based on my experience with this filter, I recommend against adding the course foam in the vertical downflow cavity between the intake and the filter basket. Turns out that larger particles and generally bigger muck quickly build up on the END of the foam, restricting the incoming water and causing it to divert. The diverted water can actually overflow the side of the filter body and spill out onto the floor. So I suggest leaving the vertical cavity open and use the supplied course foam as your first layer in the bottom of the filter basket.

Thanx for your instructive videos. I have seen a few now. I wonder how your recommended filter media differs from, say, ceramic rings. I understand from my studies that denitrification bacteria are anaerobic, but how can they thrive in an environment where oxygen-rich water is pumped through constantly? What is the secret with the media you use? Are there nooks in it where the anaerobic bacteria hide and where the oxygen can't reach?

My biggest issue with these filters, I have 3 of the 110 versions, is that most of the water bypasses the sponges entirely. Like, at all times. I often take them apart for cleaning and find that the sponges are clean but the filter media that has a bag around it at the top is gummed up to hell. At this point, it's almost not even worth putting sponges in. You'd almost be better off just using straight matrix.

I’m no engineer but this is such a flawed design, it has so much potential! There is too much bypass as the 2 front holes on the basket is where most of the water comes out of (Turn up the flow and you can see it)... I have modified mine and used waterproof tape to close all the holes in the basket. I also used poly around the basket (like a gasket) so water doesn’t rise up from the sides quickly, then I semi permanent used silicon around the lip and water fall area (top blue dial) If you turn up the flow, water will seep through the cracks. So since it’s sealed, it essentially now forces the water down instead of around. The water now goes through bottom and through the actually media properly! Cleaning is the crappy part as now the basket is non removable.
I then taped up the skimmer area so there is less water being sucked up through there, I also did what someone else mentioned in the comments and used a small cut up sponge to restrict flow and so fry do not get sucked in to the filter. I also added another sponge and tape in the bottom of the motor housing as water gets sucked up there too.. This helped with better suction from the actual extension tube. Seachem should hire me lol

I see you put a sponge over the intake pipe, but not on the other 2 intakes (Skimmer & just under the pump). The pump and housing comes off so you can put pre-filter sponges in there.
Also the overflows front and back need covering if all your media is to be utilised properly. Instead of forcing water through the sponges and then through the media, it will simply bypass all this with the slightest bit of gunk.
