London Grammar's Hannah Reid on sexism in the music industry

  • It's the hit album which almost never happened. Hannah Reid says years of misogyny in a male dominated industry almost drove her to quit music for good. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
But now her band London Grammar are back at the top of the charts with their new album Californian Soil.
A record which Reid says has been inspired by those very experiences - She's been talking to our reporter Anja Popp.

Unfortunate she has been treated poorly and doubts herself. She is incredibly talented and hard working. Being treated poorly can lead to a cycle of being doubtful which other people feed off of and doubt you because of it even more. Hope she can learn to feel differently to how she deserves to feel. It is other people who should learn to accommodate her beauty and give her respect and privacy. I was always worried she would go off on her own because she is so good. I feel sad to hear that little has changed since the 70s, when women like myself were trying to challenge stereotypes of us in the music biz. Punk actively changed this for a while when we had incredible and unusual female artists like Ari Up, Siouxsie, Poly styrene, Lene lovich, Nina Hagen, Annie Lennox etc etc. Too many of today's female artists rely on auto-tuned vocals and overtly sexual appearance, and the music isn't even good lol! I love Hannah's voice, and hope she stays strong!

Because actually what's hateful is the global issue of male violence against women. That's actual hate. People disagreeing with your views is not hate. It's always brave when women speak up because we live in a patriarchy where men hold the majority of the wealth and power. Your comment is very "what about white men!?"

"She's the only woman in the band". Yes, 33% of the band. What an asinine comment and a disappointing interview. They're a great band and she's an incredibly attractive woman with an amazing voice, but it sounds to me as though she's complaining that the music industry likes attractive front people. She's no more objectified than any of the boy bands that appeal to hormonal teen girls. She wears jeans and a tshirt, but I notice she still make an effort with her appearance. She recognises that her image is as much part of the music "product" as her voice and persona.
Is she not listened to because she's a woman, or because she expresses opinions like the ones in this interview? I wouldn't take her seriously either.

Sometimes when you represent the top notch…those who don’t measure up will do what they can to take you down to their level. Anyone who’s got something special will understand this. It’s a regular part of their experience. Some folks will gravitate and look up to them. Others will feel a pain when they look up to them because it just reminds them of a lack they think they have. And these are types that want to make ya feel lower than you are. So the point is everyone has to learn this at what others do or think can’t shake you. Because there is nothing in there to be shaked.

If she went to South America, she would see what it is really like to have problems. I speak of Brazil and I know what are the real problems that women are going through. England, Scandinavia, France and other central European countries are paradise compared to the reality of South America.

I remeber them and this band is absolutly fantastic. But I didn't know their name nor their face. Many of music artist I don't even know how do they look like, but I understand that makes a lot of trouble. It would be difficult to open their think about a gender issue. Dark days.

Let's keep clear gender distinctions! No need to equalize. This does not mean violence or disrespect. Just let men be men and women be women.

Yes let's keep clear gender distinctions for those men and women who thrive within those clear distinctions (as currently defined at their time in history - given these have changed over time). And let's not impose rigid distinctions on the minority of people for whom those distinctions are totally unhelpful.

Way to lower your stock with the delusional, abused 1st world woman, movement. Bless your heart, the struggle is real...just today I came across a half dozen women hanging from trees..then when I got to work, women were being thrown left and right, with men standing over them shouting "you'll never be treated fairly while we're in power!". Guys it's terrible, please support the cause.
...maybe someone should remind her that she sings lead in a great band...in front of two men🤔🥱

Any musician listening to Hannahs melodies, the way she surprises you, couldn't doubt her ear or her musicianship.
Even after I've listened to a LG song 20 times, I can't replicate the vocal melody exactly, because its complicated and original. It's not very predictable. That's the sign of creativity and musicianship.

I suspect that there's a some kind of a general attitude like "singers aren't real musicians" in the industry. Because I don't know how else one could arrive at the opinion that women aren't good at music with so many prominent female singers. Like perhaps they don't treat anyone who doesn't play an instrument seriously.

Idk why you can't simply do both. I mean, anyone with eyes in their head can see that, yes, she's gorgeous, but anyone with functioning ears can also hear that she's got an amazing voice and is a fantastic singer and songwriter. It's like some people need a person to be one thing and one thing only; their brains cannot fathom the possibility that a pretty girl can also be talented and skilled.
Also, not to dismiss misoginy in the business, but some of this might also be related to dumb attitudes among people in the scene that singers aren't "real musicians". The same thing is often said about drummers and it is equally as stupid in that case. There's just a whole lot of gatekeeping among musicians and even music fans over who is "real" and who isn't and it is really small-minded and tiring.

Well she's right about one thing, women do need to stand up for themselves and act more like men if they expect to be heard or taken seriously. I've never ever had a problem getting what I want because I've always been a tomboy and learned to be assertive quite early on. Men always listen to me, the problem I have is with women who are sadly only competitive with other women and keep us down. If you speak up, men will hear you. Women will try to find a way to shut you down.
