Noam Chomsky & Vijay Prashad: US Military is a Global Mafia

  • This is an excerpt from our interview with Noam Chomsky and Vijay Prashad to discuss their new book "The Withdrawal." To Noam and Vijay, US global power acts much the same way a Godfather rules over a Mafia family, imposing its interests on all who stand in its way domestically or internationally. The wide-ranging discussion touches on American exceptionalism, Military Keynesianism, the roadblocks for a new Iran Nuclear Deal, and the implications of Rep Nancy Pelosi's recent visit to Taiwan.

Absolutely loved this discussion. It was an extremely succinct way of approaching America's place in the global hierarchy, and the ways in which they maintain that position.

As always, on the money. I think the USA is going to learn (painfully) that building "loyalty" through bribes, extortion, murder, corruption, and fear is a thin platform to stand upon. What happens when the world simply says, "Enough!"

Socialist greetings from Germany. US imperialism can only be defeated by US citizens themselves. You have a tough but great historical chapter in the history of the workers' movement.

You're right, but very few of us have ever even seen that book. Generally only those children of the owner class attend schools that make that history known, and it is taught as evil and a direct threat to the "American way of life", which of course it is from their perspective. The entire history of the American labor movement has been effectively erased and what little is known is heavily redacted.

We are grateful to Noam Chomsky for speaking against the human rights violations in Pakistan. But who is going to talk about Afia Siddiqui an educated Pakistani woman and MIT graduate who was kidnapped from her hometown in Pakistan several years ago and is still being tortured under the custody of CIA.

Fragility implies proneness to shattering. US power is not likely to shatter. There is no fragility, only insecurity among the US elites.
When their vital interests are at stake, great powers are not constrained by ethical considerations. The US is no exception.

I am still trying to figure out the Monroe doctrine, an 1830ish paper that defines all territories in the Western Hemisphere to be the concern of the USA...So, if I understand correctly, this was to stop Europe from stepping on their toes. Just how far WEST does the modern USA plan to go, till they reach the East coast USA??? Did this document define Northern and Southern Hemispheres...???
I grow tired of seeing the USA running around the world pretending to uphold values that it is not even a signatory to in the UN charter. They should not be allowed to lead any actions such as freedom of navigation, unless they are a full signatory to the UN charter. Otherwise, they are nothing but Pirates and carrying out such actions does not have any UN protection if they provoke an attack. That is just one example, they should also be called out for their constant Human Rights abuse to the citizens of the USA. Again they are not signatories to this UN charter either, yet they lead the charge against other countries to deflect from the neglect in the USA.

There was violence, of course, heinous at times, but it was political violence against the spread of communism. This is exactly what communists did and have done, too, in order to spread their respected ideology and ensure it is secured. You're socialists, I get it, but the attributing of this practice exclusively to the US is plainly daft. (Also, I can't take Prashad seriously on such topics when he provides egregious apologia for China, which is doing exactly what they're criticizing the US for on its frontiers.)
