Had to learn this lesson this year in coaching. Had a parent disagree with my approach/strategy with their daughter. I felt (and still feel) that my original plan was best for her (and the team), but things got heated and nasty and it leaked into my life. Seriously stressed about it for days and was distracted in my teaching job and at home. Was the type of thing that kept me up at night. I’m not a huge fan of confrontation. In the end I decided to extend the olive branch and mostly gave into what they wanted. I still don’t feel great about it but the stress was gone. Finding that balance of when to stand your ground and when to concede for peace of mind is tough.

I'm not as gracious. I had 500 portrait sessions in 2018 and maybe 5 that had an issue. The issues being I made them walk too much or that it was too hot or they didn't look like Carrie Bradshaw are not things I'm willing to give a refund for. If I'm at fault I totally will compensate the person, but someone just complaining to complain is not something I entertain in any way, shape, or form.

How do you not blame yourself though?

If client is good looking you will always make good pictures of them if not then it can be a problem.

Thanks for broaching the subject of client dissatisfaction. This is the first such video I've seen online. Great point that photography is essentially a service business. It would be interesting to hear from other photographers working in genres other than weddings. Question: Do you charge for re-shoots, under what circumstances and at what price?

Wow. You just said “own the shit...” I just offered my client a refund. A reshoot would only create pressure on them AND me. I invited them to seek out another photographer. I didn’t want to them to be like you said...”confident” in their photographer. Thanks. Good stuff

Ben, this is gold!!! You are on the money. Great questions and advice. 6400 ISO and 2 stops in post 😂😂 Want to discuss second shooters? When you need most, what to look for, expectations, etc?? Don’t think I have heard you discuss this

1st and foremost. If your client seen your work and the work that you have done MATCH THAT.....Then that client may be picky or don't like the way they look do to insecurities....Or sometimes they can pull fast ones on you. So if you know you delivered good images, don't ever think it's your fault. On the other hand, if you KEEP getting bad feedback about your work then YES!!! you need to revamp and recreate your vision and brush up.on your editing.
If all of a sudden clients pull this act if an engagement shoot was included in a package and you know nothing is wrong with them, then more than likely they found out they can't afford it and trying to get their retainer back. Again Remember everything isn't your fault. However you can try to fix the problem but never give a refund because they had a sad day or a sad smile

Lol all these years later and this has only gotten worse. So many I know no longer do wedding photography because of over editing expectations. Super sad really. In all honesty lately it’s mostly the client I’m sorry to say. Documentary photography is not for everyone yet most wedding photographers want to do just that.
