      emp_ muneeb It depends what you have to do. I’d call it more of a chrome book replacement than a laptop replacement, Imo nothing can ever truly be a ‘laptop replacement’ if it can’t run x64 programs. Dex is useful if you don’t have anything else, but there’s practically nothing I can do on dex that my iPad can’t do faster and easier (as of now) plus dex doesn’t have a true desktop class browser so it’s really best for just blowing up videos to a bigger screen or typing out a quick document or notes. Personally I see dex being much more useful on something like the tab s7+ where the device itself is large enough to be the monitor and you can just switch over for better multitasking, instead of having to hook up your phone via a cable to a whole new device. Wireless dex won’t ever be an option until Samsung ditches miracast, I’ve always had miracast issues and they’re still here in dex.

    • @savagedragon1047
      @savagedragon1047 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@enderdragonslaya I agree. The majority of my work revolves around Microsoft Office, so on Dex, it is all fairly optimized and actually more convenient than my computer. Not to mention the specs on my Note 10+ are comparable to my laptop. It isn't 100% ready to replace all, but when it is (very soon) it will change the game.

      @lilPopper 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@JohnsonLimerstine Where HP, Razor and Asus failed is that their accessories will only work with their phones. This at least is a little more open to flagship devices that have the capability to have the desktop experience like Samsung and Huawei.
      I doubt Windows will do this to their upcoming dual screen phone since they are trying to make their Duo be like a better version of LG G8X.
      This device is also a competitor to business based laptops with LTE capability.
      But this device wouldn't be ideal for gamers or graphic artist unless Apple is willing to make iPhones as powerful as their macbook pros and current iPads.

    This is what I wish I had in my university years... Instead I had an Archos MP4 media player and recorder, which I used for multimedia consumption but I also used to load it with PowerPoint slideshows turned into jpegs, so I could give a presentation in a pinch before I bought my first laptop. My Archos had TV-out (and TV-in for recording) capabilities through the headphone jack (to RCA composite plugs) and USB-Host (OTG) that I used for exchanging files from a flash drive. Truly a marvel of tech for 2005. To put it in perspective the iPod of that year was the iPod Color which was able to show photos.
    I see this device as a great solution for students, but as Lew pointed out, Chromebooks and cheaper Windows laptops are a better justification at that price point.
    The appeal I see is that you can keep using this device as long as your future phone upgrades keep compatibility

    Way before the days of Samsung Dex and nexdock.....back in 2010 I was using my Motorola Droid 4 with a monitor and keybaord using Motorola's Webtop. they also had the Motorola Lapdock. USB-C did not exist back then, that's why DROID 4 had a microHDMI port on the phone, I used a splitter microUSB cable to charge while using in desktop mode. But it was Motorola so no one paid attention except very very few people.
    My company did not allow personal laptops or tablets on the premises but personal cell phones were ok. So I put a KVM switch under my desk and hooked up the DROID 4 microHDMI + USB and my work laptop to the KVM . I hotkey switched back and forth in between Webtop on my DROID 4 and my work laptop seamlessly. As a final touch, both had our company's wallpaper on them, I cruised like that for years lol

    259 almost gets you one of those small laptops these days, I think it’s way too expensive.

    • @Zuchu4501
      @Zuchu4501 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      wouldn't the argument be, that this 'laptop' would stay updated because you get a new more powerful phone all two years anyways? But yes, IMO too expensive too.

    • @Katzelle3
      @Katzelle3 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Especially once the DeX desktop app becomes compatible with mid-range Samsungs, then you could just stick with your current laptop. But the ability to use apps like "Podcast Addict" on your laptop already is a massive value proposition on its own.

    • @DominiqueOlaniyi
      @DominiqueOlaniyi 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Using a $259 laptop is like using a smartphone from 2011, it won't last you more than 2 years at most. This in my opinion is a smart and relevant work around in today's day and age. Smart phones are tenfold more powerful than a range of laptops, plus we use it for basically everything we do. Smartphone computing will most definitely be the future and this is the start.

    • @Squilliam-Fancyson
      @Squilliam-Fancyson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah. You can get a 13" laptop with Ryzen 3200U at Wallmart at the moment. It even comes with a metal housing and its GPU would punch the shit out of that one used in the S20( Snapdragon 865). This thing is way too expensive. For this price i expect a decent display, as its the key advantage of the idea with going desktop using a smartphone. This dim screen is just awful and not worth the price.

      Honestly, 8 gigs of RAM, an 8th gen Intel and an SSD should already give you plenty of performance for quite a while, but you're gonna pay 600 for that kind of configuration. A phone dock is an interesting alternative and, really, the only problem is that you're gonna rely on an external hard drive for most of your files.

    This is exactly what I wanted or should I say I thought this would be a great idea and the next step for personal computing 6 years ago.
    Using the phone as the base for all personal computing with docks with keyboards and displays for convenient use. Finally someone got on broad with the same idea. Too bad I wasn't working in IT at the time in my early 30s.

    The real magic of a product segment like this is the possibility of students going into a classroom/library filled with these ; all of the work is on the phone, but the interaction is in a larger format that might be more conducive to creative work. These would work well on airplanes and hotels; you no longer need to bring your laptop - just plug your phone in and play. I like this idea a lot.
