Rodney Dangerfield was an all-around good human being. He helped many comedians get their start and put them in the limelight ahead of himself so that way they could be noticed in advance their own careers. He's one of the legends in comedy. RIP

You've gotta have a lot of respect for Rodney! I found out that 20 years before he came into comedy he was given a contract to perform his comedy routine. The lady he was seeing became pregnant and he decided to stay home and raise the child. He worked as a Tin salesman for 20 years. The reason he did not take the comedy routine is that his father traveled a lot and he never saw his father. He said that he would not put his child through that. So, it was only after he raised his child and was there for his child that he was offered another comedy routine contract. For a man who made a living saying "I get no respect," I sure have a lot of respect for him. RIP Rodney!

One of my favorite movies he was in was "Caddy Shack", released in 1980 and was a huge hit; although, he wasn't the main character. Y'all weren't there for the 80s, but watch Rodney in Back to School. The late, great Sam Kinison plays a Vietnam vet history teacher and steals a scene (watch the story of that scene). The movie had 80s titular bad boy William Zabka (best know for his role in the original Karate Kid) in it, and also had a performance by a huge 80s band: Oingo Bingo (their lead singer went on to do many film scores, including the 1989 Batman and Nightmare before Christmas). Rodney's uncensored stand up comedy is the best, but very hard to find; worth it though!

I'm a Navy veteran once stationed in Iceland. The Vikings gave these islands names that would confuse any of their enemies. The name translated to Greenland so the enemy would assume it is a lush, beautiful island. So, of course, the opposite was true for Iceland....the enemy would stay away, thinking it was a frozen tundra. Iceland is cold, as well, but not unbearable and gorgeous with amazing, natural hot springs throughout the country.

He got his start decades before I was born in 1971, but I had a chance to see him on roasts, TV late night shows, etc. in the 70s and 80s. My favorite movie role for him was in "Caddyshack" around 1980. So damn funny. "Let's dance"!! Lol Dangerfield was a brilliant stand up comic. His main angle was self-deprecation often related to his looks, his intelligence, or his marriage/wife. "No respect, no respect at all...." was his catch phrase. Great comic. I'd give a lot to watch him and Don Rickles at a Catskills performance. Keep doing what y'all are doing, gentlemen.

Rodney Dangerfield's most prolific line was, 'I get no respect' (paraphrased). Original, quick-witted, and sharp as a tack. I encourage these young people to study our history because without you, we will be forgotten. ❤ Carol Burnett, Monty Python, Eddie Murphy, Bernie Mac, Reddit Foxx, Richard Pryor, George Burns, I could go on and on. Rodney Dangerfield. The Master Of The One Liner. Rodney delivers some of the funniest lines ever yet he is so professional he never laughs at his own jokes even while the entire audience is busting up loudly. In the time he is performing you may hear at least fifty jokes that are all hilarious. He doesn’t stutter or miss a line. His facial expressions are perfect, part of his act. He rarely makes a joke about anyone other than himself and his family/personal life. He has a response to whatever subject/issue you mention, with at least ten jokes. His spontaneous off the top of his head replies to others comments are masterful. There will never be another individual with his talents and pure comedic brilliance.

You can gauge which jokes are 'universal' and which appeal to a certain slice of personality. Interesting these guys are from a family (I am assuming based on the name) so they will have the same overall view of the 'what's funny?' gap. Very interesting watch for people who study humor. Cultural and personal filters - there should be some way to monetize this kind of output because AI is going to be using this kind of thing in the years ahead to learn how people see life. As a Gen Xer growing up in the late 70s and early 80s We had limited platforms for media. The internet was still in it's infancy There was no world wide web just TV and radio stations that were worked on an analog system You had 3 major TV networks ABC, CBS, and NBC. Those networks were adult oriented and young adults had to watch what older people were watching The Gen X were the last "Hand me down" kids I knew about Rodney Dangerfield when I was 9 years old because of his stand up comedy albums Our parents bought these racy records to listen to when the kids were asleep But we latchkey kids found them when you were at work and invited our friends to our homes (against the latchkey rules) to listen to the most vulgar comedy stand ups and we loved it. You kids are lucky to have the answers to every question at your finger tips and say what you want about us Gen Xers but we created the internet that you kids enjoy today. MIC DROP

They called him the king of one liners.
He was the last of an era where stand up comics were all like that. Just rapid one liners - nothing had to connect, just boom boom boom - he was great and was great in movies.
“I gets no respect I tell ya!”
    Good stuff fellas.

Check out some of his movies. One in particular that is funny is Caddyshack where he's at this elite country club and his personality and class just clashes with the rest of them and really irritates this one guy. It also has Chevy Chase and Bill Murray in it. Really funny.
He also was in a movie called Ladybugs where he was asked by his boss to coach the soccer team that his daughter is on and they really sucked but his stepson who got kicked out of his soccer team for being so good he was aggressive, he gets the idea to have him pretend to be a girl and help them win games lol. It's funny. The mom from Sister Sister is in that one too.

Rodney was a devoted family man, and a great father, and everyone understood his routine was not based on reality. He also smoked weed daily for like thirty years.
His signature "I don't get no respect!" line has a fun backstory. He was working at one of the resorts in the Poconos and overhead a table of mafia guys complaining, and one of them kept whining about the lack of respect he got from the family. Dangerfield took it and turned it into one of the most recognizable comedy lines ever.
I'm glad you folks discovered him, he was truly one of the greats.
