I have to say, out of all the electrical repair videos on TH-cam, yours are by far the best ones to watch. Also, knowing you’re a cat lover as well, well, that makes them that much better.
Steve Man of micro USB ports! I'm jealous of the never ending supply of all types known to mankind. Congrats on the low melt, apparently it doesn't have flux built into it so you need plenty of flux, also I find it easier if you just use the tiniest amount and keep it on each part of the unleaded solder until it fully melts in. I disliked low melt when I first used it but it has now won me over. Lovely looking cat, fun video 👍👍👍
I don’t know if anyone’s mentioned it but the fix that went under the radar was synchronizing the frame rate to the subscriber count LED display so it doesn’t flash anymore. Nice work!
Ladies, Gentlemen, and everyone in between - we bring to you the latest in brand new USB ports. Pre-demolished for your convenience! Who was that seller trying to kid 😂
@@StezStixFix Reminds me of an eBay auction I opted out of bidding on that read: "Should work fine, but I haven't tested it because I don't have the correct type of batteries to test it with - No Returns Accepted...". Was a handheld game that took two (2) AA size batteries. I mean, who doesn't have at least a TV remote control, to borrow a pair of AA batteries from? Really? It smelled like scammer right through the internet connection... I saved my money. BTW, Nice fix Mr. Steve! Fred
Hey Steve, I fixed my ice machine yesterday on the back of the confidence you've given me. I've bought a basic solder kit and bits and I reckon I'm going to be throwing away a lot less tech, you're gonna save me a fortune.
Funny I actually did this to my own bluetooth speaker (Same make, model) about a month ago after watching enough of your videos to be confident in the small repairs. Took old off, without much drama, put new in and it worked!! Thanks for the inspiration to fix instead of throw out.
New sub here Steve, I think I have gone through your entire channel in about a week and I'm annoyed at myself because now I have to wait for content! Keep em coming :)
My son asked me who is your favourite you tuber I hadn't thought about it before. But after some thought the answer is you Steve your vids are great funny good content
Two things surprised me in this video. First, you didn't put solder mask over the scratch to prevent it from getting worse. Second, I'm surprised your cat hasn't gotten involved in any of your repairs! Your cat could be Dave's assistant!
@StezStix Fix. I got 2 of these and the great and ot was good to see the inside of one. The spike is inside the black pole. You pull out the cross shaped piece the turn it around to connect it back to the pole lol.
Well brother Steve! what I've noticed in the last 10 or so years is; teens and older kids walking around with such speaker devices playing music loud! in there little gangs. The power it fading, so they probably tried plugging in a power bank, in the darkness of the ruck sack the speakers playing from, therefore damaged the port 🤷♂👍🖖
Ofc it's possible ;) The complexity of replacement depends on what u're replacing. If it's just bout charging, one has to short together ground and VBus. Then they have to be connected to the ground and Vss of ur board. If one finds a C-Port that's meant for replacement of a micro-USB dedicated to only charging, then the CC1 and CC2 are connected in the proper state (These contacts are there for switching the mode of the connector -> flipping the direction, switching modes, etc) In that case, its already done. Otherwise one has to connect them with a fitting resistor. If there's datatransfer (max. USB-2.0) involved, then one has to connect D+ and D-. There's a lot of instructions on the internet about it, if u're interested, just check it out ;)
Sorry mate. As soon as you did the voice changey thing I started chuckling out loud and the first thing out of my mouth was "so stupid". Been loving these odd but highly awesome videos for months.
I thought I'd mention I got inspired by your setup. Interesting thing of the microscope I did was a $15 cheap microphone stand to hold it and it worked beautifully. Thanks for the inspiration!
You probably know this, but still worth a mention some times USB ports are flipped. The port, and pins can look exactly the same but the pin layout is reversed. You don't see it all that often anymore, but they do exist so some times generic ports can appear exactly the same but they are not. I guess to be fair, it's not really the ports which are reverse, but the boards pads are, and they use a modified port.
The IBM PS/2 series did this, using all proprietary parts. They sold the systems at cost or at a loss to encourage businesses to buy them, but everything on them from the ports to the screws were proprietary. I bought an old PS/2 model 25 cheap many years ago and the drive head snapped off in the floppy drive. A clone drive replacement was $15. The PS/2 proprietary replacement was $200. I called IBM about it, and their tech told me the problem with the drive head was well known; it was designed to be installed vertically, but on the model 25 it was installed horizontally, which meant the drive head hung lower than spec and would eventually snap off. At that point the PS/2s were two or three generations out of date, so I asked him for the pin-out on the floppy drive so I could make an adaptor to use a clone drive and the tech had to refuse because of proprietary trademark and all that jazz. He did offer to send someone out to fix it at a cost of $150 an hour, paid from the time they left the office to the when they arrived back at the office, but I politely declined. I eventually brought it to a tech who used a multimeter to work out the pin-out configuration and he said all they did was move the power prong from one side to the other, just enough difference that you'd fry your system if you tried to use generic parts in it.
I believe in the Steve, This is one of my favourite ones tbh the backing track suits, and the cadence seems very natural for you love your work mate. Much love from a Kiwi in NZ
It make me very happy when you upload a new video as I’ve watched nearly all your current content over the last two week and it’s been absolutely brilliant keep it up mate
Nice Fix Steve. What did you think of the low melt solder? I used some to remove an xbox series X HDMI connector on a video I did a couple of weeks back, but it was still a pain to remove. I think the copper on the board was sucking all the heat away or my rework station doesn't really have enough wattage! Well done on another successful repair!
My guess is that the previous user went to charge it, got the cable flipped wrong way because it's a micro USB, and those suck, and they jammed it until it bent up the inside. Then no longer able to charge they returned it saying it was damaged from the factory, when the seller got it it probably turned on and they just said, yep, brand new. Also, that cat is so cute, I hope you put the furble in more videos.
Hi I have watch several of your videos now, and dont know how much electronic knowledge you have? I studied electronics for 3 years, and later electrical installation for a further 3 years. I heard you say resistors going short. Actually resistors only go open circuit, never short. I hope this helps give you a better understanding of how these components work. A great book, which contains a great wealth of knowledge is the art of electronics by Paul Horowitz. Which you can pick up of Ebay, and is money well spent. I really like what your doing with the channel, regards Andy
Another nice fix. Just waiting for a new speaker for my Pikachu Yellow Gameboy Color. The old one is corroded and it looks like some liquid has seeped under the Mylar diaphragm. No sign of liquid spill though, mystified as to what caused it. Humidity maybe?
Hey Stez - could you share which soldering hands / microscope gizmo you use? My eyes aren't what they used to be and I think I could do with one of those myself. Keep up the banging videos!
Hi Steve, you seem to be missing the spike to stick into the ground. In some cases its inverted and pushed up the rod that comes from the base. Lots of garden solar lights come that way also, so they can get them in the package.
Steve, discovered your channel a few weeks ago, and am totally hooked. Definitely found a new hobby to get into. Got an old metal detector that won’t power up so that will be my first attempt at this. Also one of the tractors at the farm has a digital screen on which the numbers on it are starting to disappear bit by bit, are there components on the board that could be replaced or is it the screen itself? The part is getting replaced so the old one might be another project to play with.
Hello :), one question, why you did not use a hot air station instead of this iron and low melt? I know eveyrone's different and can do what they want, but, I'd not want to do your way cause with a hot air would be quicker and I didn't have to use this low melt :).
Cheers for the excellent Video's, they are informative, very interesting and certainly educational but just a heads up that the link you provide for your Thermal Camera on Amazon, seems to go to a "Wood Moisture Meter," !!
I've just fixed a very similar one (black with a torchlight instead of the garden stick) and the problem still was the micro USB port smashed. Since they only need it as a standalone radio receiver, I drilled a hole and put a female barrell connector just to provide the 5 volts to charge the battery.
Great channel I find myself watching all your stuff and waiting for more. Do you have any qualifications or are you self taught? Watching you makes me want to buy some electrical tools and try to fix some stuff 😂
One possible upgrade instead of replacing all the micro USB ports in the world, could be to turn everything into USB-C ? Much more future proof and fool proof. ☺️ Merci Monsieur !

As a full time eBay seller seeing this being sold as new really hurts my heart. Great video and adorable cat

Well, despite any attempt to kid anyone, they've made a tenner and reduced their loss... I'd say they've broke even at least.
Looks like they probably tried to plug in a 3 pin, 240v mains plug into that socket!

It's amazing how an intact USB port solves so many problems.

I'm a believer. Love the singing, never skip and impressed how you always pull it off. Nice!
I'm going to tell TH-cam to stop recommending this channel.
Stumbled across your channel and love the content. The retro handhelds are nostalgic for me! Cracking material 👌
Good return on that purchase. Works and sounds good! The music makes me want to go roller skating...but I won't. Thanks for the content!
Excellent choice of music (again). I could watch soldering to some smooth jazz for hours (and sometime, i do...)
That charging port looks to be mint!
