      so you're pressing on the back and its making a connection -my thought its that behind the resin on thr blobchip, its pulled up some traces, perhaps this stuff shrinks very slowly with age, as it dries out or someithng?

    This could be as simple as bad contacts on the screen, I wouldn't think the blob could be corroded as it's protected (sort of) from anything hitting the chip underneath. Great video as always Steve

  • @TanookiSuit
    @TanookiSuit 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    I've had this issue before, they're designed so cheaply it can come down to actual pressure, even pressure as your finger kept doing. The LCD tends to have a strip of contacts held firmly down with a harder foam strip with an array of contacts along it, you'll have seen this with like a Game & Watch among others. Some version of this may be at play here, so some even firm pressure put down to where it's sending the signal to the LCD to display could likely clear this up. If it were the glop top, that shouldn't matter by pressure, it's dead or not, not varying degrees of sketchiness.

    Based on the way you are pushing on it. It may be blob chip delamination. Or it could be the display. If it uses zebra strips, they could be bad, or the connections to the LCD.

    Heya Steve. I think you have the answer with the “finger on crystal” thing. I’d bet on the clock oscillator not working. Remember that the crystal is NOT the clock oscillator. It’s just part of it. I’d try removing the crystal and injecting a clock signal from something else to test the idea. Your options are an external signal generator, or a bodge wire (plus ground) from a donor game, or for a permanent fix a small single-component clock oscillator module. Just connect the signal to one of the crystal pads - one is output from the oscillator driver, and the other is clock input to the micro. You have a 50% chance of getting it right first time!

    If the watch crystal is in a Pierce oscillator circuit then it will need the two load capacitors to both be in working order. Check to see if any of the other ceramic capacitors have a leg connected to the crystal and replace them with the same values. The fact that something happens when your finger is touching the crystal is a clue - you are acting as a big, hairy capacitor, Steve!

    Looks like a classic Zebra strip issue. It's easy for corrosion, oils, or other kind of dirt to get on the contacts or the strip itself. I bet it'll work after a good clean and with even pressure all across the strip.

      " bet it'll work after a good clean "
      That was the first thing he did though, and pushing on it did not make the game work, it just lit up random bits of the lcd.

    Just need to ask about the mugshot you got - it wasn't sourced from the police, was it?
