    this is genius!, thank you very much!
    i used my A1 for almost 4 years with the fart sounds.... (reduced low frequencies via equalizer)
    back then i bought one directly on the webstore of bang&olufsen and when i asked about the sound preoblems, they replied, that there are no known problems. I returned the A1 and bought one from Amazon (also cheaper for 149€). And also this device had the farting sounds, so i thought it was normal (stupid of me to keep them anyways)
    so when i opened the speaker, the plastik unit had a lot of cracks where the screws are applied. And also the gasket did not keep the air in the case (thats what makes the farting sounds). i tried to glue all the cracks and applied a self made gasket.
    Way better now!!!!

    Yep, air-sealing is crucial to this kind of speaker "cabinet". I fixed one with a similar issue, I sealed up the screw holes as well with tape under the top cover. Working properly the A1s have amazing bass for the size - I run two as a stereo pair when out sometimes and for a tiny portable setup they are pretty awesome and people wonder where all the sound is coming from.

    • @StezStixFix
      @StezStixFix  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Agreed, the sound from this thing is really nice! I used a bit of the butyl to seal the screw holes too, just in case, so i think this will keep working well now! Might have to get another one! 😬

    • @Honeypot-x9s
      @Honeypot-x9s 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      They should have installed a silicon gasket around the edges if air sealing is so important for this specific unit. That would have improved its quality of life extensively since it would maintain a better seal after impact and faulty repair attempts and just wear and tear would mean less air slippage overtime as the plastics take a beating.

    • @schertenbronk
      @schertenbronk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The same. Covering the screw holes with tape does the trick.

      @@Honeypot-x9s doesnt help. i own two units and they break horribly around the screws. this unit produces really powerfull bass so if a screw or the housing breaks, it is very hard to contain all the pressure that the screws should hold with some gluey gummy stuff inside.

  • @Fifmut

    Thanks, this video was helpful. The problem as you said was the air leaking because it wasn't sealed properly. I just placed rubber seals under the screws and that fixed it for me, didn't even bother with the butyl tape around the edge.

  • @beogeek
    @beogeek 2 ปีที่แล้ว +42

    Hey Steve 3:30 re the gluing part, the absolute best way to glue broken cheap plastics like the ones you're holding is to use super glue with Sodium hydrogen carbonate (baking soda). What you do is place a bit of super glue on the broken bits, fuse them together and then sprinkle Sodium hydrogen carbonate onto the glue, it will act as a catalyst/accelerant with the glue and create a rock-solid bond within 1-2 seconds! Maybe use a toothpick to plug the hole so you can screw in the screw once you're done. Food for thought for the next repair ay.

    As for fixing that post, I don't know if others do this, but I've had great success with a 3-step process.
    After preparing the joining surfaces and applying Gorilla Super Glue, just to hold it for now, I take very thin "finishing" nails. The ones that come in colors, no heads and have roughness on the shaft. I cut the nail so that it will fit across the break, along the shaft of the broken post, down into the plastic in the base.
    I use needle nose players to hold the nail, dead center )usually).
    I then use a hot flame and get the nail red hot.
    I quickly push the red-hot nail into the shaft's side, making sure that it crosses the break, into the lower plastic.
    Depending on the size of the item being fixed, I may use 2, 3 or more nails this way.
    Once things are solid and cooled down, I'll use a good quality epoxy glue (the mixing of 2 tubes) and make a nice bead around the break area and the nails. Works a charm and lasts.

      Yeah, you might be right, I wonder if it's supposed to have one but the previous owner removed it? I'm not sure, but it definitely needs to be air tight to work properly, like any speaker of this kind I guess. So happy to get it working though, I've been using it every day since and the sound from it is beautiful! 👍

    • @Phyrre56
      @Phyrre56 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That was my thought as well when he added the butyl tape. I bet there was a silicone ring around the outside that acted as a seal, and the person who attempted the previous repair lost or discarded it, not understanding its purpose. There's no way that the seal was achieved with screws alone. Edit: someone below said that they have a similar model and it has a rubber or foam gasket, so I think that settles it, the seal was missing.

    BTW - there is a rubber gasket that is TINY around the rim of the base. looks like they left it out or it was not sufficient with the bent frame?
    my story - my A1 1st gen c2016 took a spill off the bicycle on a corner and dented the speaker. Then the bass buzz started. I figured the worst and bought replacement A1s. anyhow, watching this prompted me now in 2024 to see whats going on in disassembly. one bass speaker screw seemed it wasnt as tight as the others. washed out the dirt and dust on the outside of the speaker flexing band. on re-assembly I found that loose screw seemed to FLEX the base post -- on further inspection that post had shattered 70%. scratched up the post and surrounding areas and then mixed up 2 part 5 minute JB epoxy (W-mart $7) and a small aluminum piece to add rigidity. im fairly certain this was my buzz. waiting on a NEW replacement battery and im thinking my 1st gen is back on the road again.

You an also reinforce the plastic parts before you put glue with either baking soda or cloth around the broken areas. The cloth gives its more structural strength.

    This is a bit old video, but Steve, have you ever tried the magic of super-glue and accelerate it with a bit of baking-soda? It works like magic for certain repairs. Just be sure what you glue and how; it sticks instantly. Trust me, it works and for certain purposes, it might just be "better than factory". I promise you: it. will. be. just. SOLID. For plastics, at least. I do not go and guarantee the solidness for metal parts.

    Mate you crack me up. Very entertaining. You also remind me of Russell Crow so better start dropping Gladiator quips into your videos 🤣👍🏻

    I love how the most replayed part of the video is the part where someone is lurking outside the window lol 💀

    I had no idea what that thing was until I started watching the video.
    Seeing the word [fart] in the title, seeing the general shape and color of the thing. I genuinely was expecting some weird electronic version of a whoopee cushion or something. 😂
    Not sure if I'm disappointed or relieved to be honest... 🤔

    Devices with history like this one are annoying. The seller clearly knew they had junk. Jokes on them because you had the skill (and the common sense) to repair this thing!

    Methylmethacrylate glue (MMA) is the best solution for plastics, but you should use a gas mask with appropriate filter and work only outdoors.
    For broken plastics, I always tape the break with labels from clothing (with MMA) for reinforcement.
    Glues containing solvents should also not be stored in the living area. Even cyanoacrylate glue is stored in my basement away from food.
    For ABS plastic, you can also use acetone-based glue. Most of the classic 2K adhesives have big problems with plastics.
    Cyanoacrylate glue is not my favorite, especially when it comes to durability and I have only had bad experiences with plastics.

    Super glue and baking powder will be your best friend when gluing plastic together. It only dries in seconds

      Superglue is brittle. You'll probably not use it often after you've tried different kinds of epoxy. Some epoxies are strong and not brittle. Personally i only use superglue on acrylic based plastics, because superglue melts acrylic and fuses it together.

      @@kriswillems5661 superglue by itself is brittle but if you use a bit of baking powder it will turn rock hard and will meld with the plastic.

    Thick superglue with activator is by far the best solution when glueing things like this. Nevertheless, nice job my friend:-)
