The MAJOR Problem with Minecraft's 1.20 Update

  • The minecraft 1.20 trails and tales update is set to release in less than a week, and while I am overall excited for it there is one feature that I think could be a major problem. The netherite smithing template was added in the hopes to make netherite harder to get, but I think the item could become a problem for multiplayer servers. So join me as I state what my problem with the 1.20 update is and how I would personally solve it!

One thing I want to touch on is gold farms which a lot have mentioned in the comments. In my opinion I don’t see that as an issue to my solution, as setting up a gold farm would be about as difficult, if not more so, as finding a bastion in a single player world. I did like the idea from the comments that each piglin would only ever be able to trade one template though, so I would add that to my solution!

The early game progression is just a joke at this point and has become incredibly stale.
I haven’t started a new minecraft world in years because it’s so boring to have to do all the early game stuff again. I’m really fed up with how every new update never changes anything about the base game.
They never update old things, the overworld biomes that everyone spends most of their playthroughs in are incredibly boring and haven’t changed in over a decade. That’s why the birch forest update being abandoned irritated the community so much.

Minecraft itself really should push you to experiment and experience it. People don't want the game to be hard, they just want a reason to, for example, farm bees, make a base in the nether, or get netherite beyond it just being possible. Challenges imposed by the game would 100% make me focus on food, or shelter, or armor collection, but right now it's just... do it because you can. Newer players can inspire themselves to do things for the sake of doing them through discovery and mastery, but experienced players can't do that.

    • @MrMcSpiff
      @MrMcSpiff 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +62

Yeah. That's really the problem. People say "It's too easy", but what I think they really mean is "the core gameplay loop has gotten stale". The easiest solution to that is to make the game harder as a whole to try to reignite their feelings of interest and engagement, but people don't stop to think much further than that. Contrast that with "getting the Netherite upgrade is too hard", and you get an apparent paradox of "why do they want it to be harder but complain we made parts of it too hard?". It's not that the upgrade is difficult. People have farmed diamonds for less. It's that it's tedious.
They made an optional upgrade to try to add more content, and then made it extremely tedious compared to its necessity in the gameplay loop. Basically nothing added after the End (which is ancient at this point) is required to actually complete the core gameplay loop (mine and build) or the core 'campaign' loop (get to End, kill dragon), and so everything they've added after falls into one of three camps: "Cool but not necessary" like bees or lush caves, "kinda pointless for how mind-numbing it is to get" like 1.20 netherite, or "kind of insulting because this would make the game easier and less tedious to beat, but it's only accessible after I beat the game" like shulkers and the elytra. Ancient Cities and the Warden in particular seem to even simultaneously fall into "cool but not necessary" and "kind of insulting for how useful it is compared to when I get it" due to how much variety there isn't in loot compared to the sheer off-the-wall nature of turning Minecraft into a stealth horror game for that one area.
Notch has a lot of reasons to be criticized, and I can't fault anyone for having ill feelings about him for all the shit he's spouted in his retirement, but the game felt very focused and well-directed when he was in charge of it. Whether his presence in that is coincidental or not nobody can say, but it is the truth. Ever since the Microsoft and Jeb era has really gotten underway, it's felt like Mojang has begun to have a strange disdain for *any* feedback the fanbase has that doesn't come from Twitter polls, and has also stumbled and lost track of what they even want Minecraft to be. It was an open world sandbox builder with light survival elements and a unique aesthetic once upon a time, but now it feels like it's trying to tack "Adventure game", "Light RPG", "Survival Horror game", and one or two other things I can't quite put my finger on all onto the original worldgen-to-End Minecraft framework and gameplay loop. There's this weird MMO grindiness to it now, especially with the advent of things like this armor update, where it feels like certain things are just plain meant to make you play the game longer. But all of that without the regular content updates or direction that MMOs are nominally supposed to have.
As the game gets older, it feels like it's losing more and more of its identity as the devs try to spitball for things that haven't been touched on by mods--a list which gets increasingly smaller by the year--and then they toss two thirds of those precious few things they do come up with away and still somehow fail to incorporate what they decided to keep in a timely or gratifying fashion.

    • @LazerDisk
      @LazerDisk 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

@@MrMcSpiff I agree, although I would define the classic survival experience as way more survival focused than that. Back when food healed hearts and took one slot for a single item, you made very active decisions that had lasting consequences, like "Do I fill my inventory with food and lose out on collecting cool stuff, or do I take a chance and risk death?" The Notch era sorta set this game on a disaster path when he added hunger but made it trivial.

Not a tedious requirement constantly pestering you like a phantom.

THERE IS A "TOO LONG, DIDN'T READ" AT THE END.
I like the idea of netherite armor being gated by a tough place like the Bastion. With that said, I don't think Pigling trade would be my go to option to gate netherite, but I do think bartering need improvement. So, I came up with my own solution.
    Main ideas:
    - Through bartering, you would had a high chance to earn a Brute Horn. Upon use, the horn would play a sound that would later be replied by a different horn sound, coming from the direction of a Bastion. Keep blowing the horn and following the sound that soon you will encounter a Bastion. NOTE: This would help on the "locating a bastion" problem.
    - Additionally with the Brute Horn, I would make an 100% guarantee of finding a Netherite Upgrade inside a Bastion, but it would generate in a random chest.
    Supplementary Details:
    - The Brute Horn could have a durability of some sort, forcing to barter multiple times for new Bation locations.
    - An issue I encountered while thinking through the Brute Horn was accessibility. Because not everyone has 3D audio, to complement it, I was thinking maybe a visual effect of where the reply is coming from. ( Similar to sculk sensing, shreiker warning, or Warden's sonic boom )
    - The random spawn of the Netherite Upgrade in chests would be excluded from Treasure Room bastions, only being generated in the treasure room itself.
    TLDR:
    - A compass ( or End Eye ) like feature that points to a bastion, the compass would be optained by bartering. On top of that the Netherite Upgrade would be garanteed in at least one random chest inside the bastion.
Personal survival world problems ( nothing to do with last things mentioned ):
    - If you read this till the end, please tell me if its normal for Bridge type bastions generate without the "shoulder" part. For context: The first bastion I encountered in my 1.20 world was a Bridge bastion, and something felt odd on its shape, till I discovered it had no shoulders. ( this lost me 3 or 4 chests ) NOTE: This is not a Bridge bastion bug because I found another Bridge bastion completely normal in the same world. Personaly, I think its probably a seed thing but let me know what you guys think.
THANKS FOR READING TILL THE END!

While the idea is neat, for worlds with world borders being smaller, the nether might have very few bastions depending on luck. This is specifically a multiplayer world issue and updating to a newer version. The nether would already be explored a bit. When all bastions are looted, there won't be any that could spawn, leaving new players having to trade with others, and depending on who has them, they might not even be available to new players. Unless of course you are suggesting to recycle chests with this item. Which clears this issue.

There could also be recipes for other items that can't normally be crafted, like Name Tags and Saddles. It could give the player incentive to seek out Libraries so they can make those items more easily accessible.

That is a really interesting idea, however, the way that knowledge books currently work is that they unlock the recipe in the "quick craft" menu. If you have the materials you can always just put them in and get the thing, so recipe books would have to be changed for them to be added like that.

But bedrock doesn’t have knowledge books because they are useless without NBT data access, and having something you can get in survival but not creative doesn’t make sense. They would have to implement them in creative somehow either by adding NBT data (which would need so much bug testing) or a special command like /knowledge or something. The crafting recipes aren’t locked in bedrock anyway, so they would have to change that as well.

I seem to remember a common complaint about netherite being added in the first place was that it made the iconic diamonds not the best thing anymore. I think it'd be cool if there were a tiny chance (~1%) for naturally generated diamond ore to also drop a smithing template; adding some more excitement back into finding a diamond vein, as well as making the netherite smithing process clearer for players that aren't reading wikis/tutorials.

The only problem I have with it is that my world decided that it didn’t want to give me diamonds so it makes it difficult for me to attain these upgrades as for some reason there are little to none where my mining set ups are. I will go on 2 hour stripmine trips after researching the best y level and stripmine techniques, and walk away completely empty handed. Aside from that though I feel like they did a good job with the update.

The worst part about merely grabbing the seed and moving on is that you need certain addons to do it. As you mentioned, getting the seed is easy so long as you have OP. But if you don't, you HAVE to use an addon to either read the bedrock pattern or another similar one that might not work on 1.20. And THEN you have to use a world downloader and travel to every single relevant chunk that you want to inject into your cloned server.
    It's definitely a logistical nightmare.

I really hate it when Mojang makes items only accessible in chests within structures. A lot of these servers also have world borders to limit the file size of the world, so if the all of the bastions have been explored, well, RIP.
In addition, having items that can only be gotten by rare chance from certain mobs is annoying too. I feel like a middle ground should be had between the two, kinda like what you have with Piglin bartering giving the template in addition to bastion chests.

I'm completely on board making netherite a bit harder to obtain, and even the locating and duplication methods while slightly flawed aren't bad to me especially because I primarily play singleplayer or with a couple friends. But something about it looking the way it does with a big diamond upgrade arrow and literally being called the "netherite upgrade" almost feels unfinished? I wish it had a cool name and slightly more interesting design that ties into the slight lore of the game with bastions or something along those lines, like a certain material or tool that the netherite needs to go through to make it applicable onto armor and other tools, it'd feel much more ingrained into the core of minecraft imo whereas right now the design name and methods to aquire it all feel like a mod to me (which isn't necessarily bad to clarify! I love playing modded, I just wish it felt more like it belonged instead of a random addition to make it more challenging with no thought behind it)

If I could take a crack at redesigning it, it’d make it an old broken forging hammer called the “Decayed Netherite Forger” or something. It’d fit a lot better with the whole old destroyed civilization ascetic of Bastions while still explaining why they’re one-time-use items (It breaks). You’d probably have to change the duping recipe since slapping 7 diamonds and a red rock on a hammer makes no sense, but that’s fine. You can throw some gilded blackstone and blaze rods in there or something while still keeping some diamonds in the recipe.
Hell, if you wanted to go super lore crazy, you use these to explain why Piglin Brutes are so much tankier and deadlier than their brethren other than just “they strong lol”. Maybe the old Piglin smiths were so skilled with their tools, they could imbue Netherite into very soft materials such as the gold axes and leather rags the brutes use. Unfortunately, they didn’t leave behind a book or something so only the toughest equipment around can withstand your sloppy technique.

Although this might seem weird, I think a good solution to making the template easier to obtain in worlds created pre-1.20, you should be able to craft a single netherite template with the same recipe you duplicate it with, just swapping out the template in the recipe with any netherite gear/equipment. It would be more expensive, but it would be in exchange for not having to find a template in a bastion. Additionally, maybe having armor. Or alternatively, if players are really willing to bite the bullet, they could allow crafting netherite tools/gear the same way that all other gear is crafted with multiple netherite ingots.

I honestly feel sort of the opposite way. I'm fine with increasing the difficulty of the first set by reporting you to explore (given I play on single player so I don't have the server issue), but I wish that the price to duplicate was cheaper as paying 7*6 diamonds for a new set as well as a pick and sword every time I lose my gear makes it much less worth it to make in the first place. Making the cost so much more than it costs to make the tools in the first place just seems weird. I don't mind the cost for the trims that much since they are just aesthetic.
I don't really buy the argument of "just find more structures if you don't want to pay". As you said later, on existing worlds it can be annoying to travel far enough away to actually find new structures and you generally need a few in order to find a full set. Also, while encouraging people to find every structure once or twice is fun, encouraging people to find a dozen of the same structure is less fun.
I think it's okay to give a reward for setting up infrastructure and I would prefer the things that will always take a lot of grinding to do to provide a benefit you are unlikely to lose when you die (conduits for example).

I think the bartering system idea kind of defeats the purpose of making netherite harder to get. A lot of players like to minmax and get large piglin farms for gold, so I wouldn't put it past players to find a way to farm templates.
Instead, I think a much easier solution to this problem would be to simply let players craft netherite gear out of raw bars as though they were crafting a normal iron or diamond piece of gear. This is hella expensive, but I think it makes perfect sense as a secondary option if you can't find any templates.

    1. The rarest piglin trade is actually netherite hoe it’s 1 in 2048 I think
    2. If piglins could trade it it would then become farmable essentially negating the need to even duplicate them
    3. On some smps and survival worlds diamonds aren’t necessary to get armor because of already set up villager halls
    4. Netherite mainly provides a bit extra damage, durability, and kb res. It isn’t very necessary in gameplay to be well protected and there isn’t as big of a difference compared to diamond and iron
    5. Elytras gave the same problem but much worse since you need an elytra to travel far but on big smps you need to travel far to get an elytra on the other hand gaining a netherite template won’t help you loot more netherite templates
    6. (More of an opinion then a point) On big smps people with templates would probably trade more easily since they can craft more on the other a player might hoard elytras since it’s hard to get more

I would honestly disagree with the point about the game's "progression" being fine (especially the point about incentive to go mining because mining is just terrible), because quite frankly if it was better than it currently is we actually COULD have reason for another tier of gear above netherite and it would both be justified and work well with that progression.
That being said, the major flaw I see is the fact that it really adds nothing but more tedious grinding to even get the gear. You gain access to both netherite materials and the templates at effectively the same time: when you enter the nether. The addition of the template doesn't actually require you make any additional step of progression; just that you waste more time to roll for loot you already could. It being a GAURANTEE is a major positive that would fix most of the issue this DOES present... but also has problems. The first is that it ISN'T a gaurantee as the loot room isn't in every bastion. The second is that now it further defeats the purpose if it WAS gauranteed as now it just requires you find a bastion, which you damn well might before you even go digging for netherite -- and you can FIND netherite rewards in the same damn bastion you get an upgrade template from. I genuinely wonder how this extra sidestep adds anything but tediousness to the process of getting netherite.

It would be cool if a sort of “enderite” (it doesn’t have to be enderite exactly, this is just a placeholder). Add it into the nether fortress as another comment have pointed out as it creates another incentive to go explore the fortresses as we're basically only using them for blazes and wither skeletons. (I don't recommend ruined portals as they are pretty common and also exist in the overworld, unless you want to make the chance of the chests having a template be really low, but still I feel like isn't that good of a solution)
    3. Guarantee the template spawn in bastion remnant chests, bastions are already a hassle to clear especially with the addition of brutes, and with the offchance that you won't find a template in a bastion really hinders your progress, you could guarantee one template per bastion or something like that.

I completely agree with your piglin bartering idea, it's much better than just removing the smithing templates altogether (although honestly I don't think people would mind that either lol) but it would solve two issues at once. Great idea

Maybe a better solution is making the netherite templates optainable in every nether structure instead, also they could be duplicated with gold or quarz to make those resources more helpful and mining in the nether more interesting

So you mentioned the netherite upgrade template could be tradeabel by piglins, I push it rurther thely would accept netherite ingot and after examineing it for a longer time then agold ingot thely will give something from a different "loot table" wich is can be the template or other similarly "high walue" item, also they wont pick it up by them selves.

I am a big fan of balanced renewability. I think that most things should be renewable, but I want it to feel balanced and make sense as well. For example, I made a datapack that makes netherite renewable in literally the same way you proposed; From piglins. With my pack, they have a very rare chance to drop 1 netherite scrap. But isn’t that unbalanced you say? No, because scrap has a weight of one. For context, soul speed books have a weight of 5. It is only there to make it technically renewable in situations where all the nearby netherite has been mined such as on a server.
For anyone curious it is posted on planet minecraft: Aceplante’s RL megapack

I always skip bastions and never go in them I find it useless to even raid a bastion so now I have a reason to go inside one and raid it I actually really like this new update and the fact that you can duplicate it with just a couple of diamonds is really nice so I don’t get why people are so bothered about it..

On solo/small survival worlds I enjoy the upgrade templates given you can have maxed out traders for diamond armor and gear and focus on diamonds being used for duplicating templates. I can see this being an issue on bigger servers but more than half surely have a way around this. Get looting 3 and it makes the task easier in terms of collecting the diamonds needed but keeping in mind that 4 players requires 242 diamonds total without the secondary pickaxe.
My biggest issue is having to use something like the gravestone mod to ensure items don't despawn rather than turning keepinventory on, as with the recovery compass being introduced- dropped inventory should either be able to be configured in the gamerules to be permanent or default being an hour. Otherwise the recovery compass is useless given default despawn is 5 mins and adjusting that is more difficult than it needs to be.
The Trails & Tales update 100% needs to be revamped, where armor trims and pottery shards, etc.. ought to have diverse archeological locations within various biomes. I enjoy the incentive to travel for these aesthetic upgrades but the spacing between available locations is definitely overdone, in my opinion.

3:11 “Netherite equipment is totally optional”? Sure, in the same way that diamond equipment is completely optional, and enchanting is completely optional, and, heck, *iron tools* and *any armor* and *bows* are completely optional. You can beat the game by getting stone tools, mining iron, making a bucket, going to the nether, yada yada, kill the dragon.
Doesn’t mean that iron pickaxes should require heading to a particular generated structure, getting a smithing pattern, and using 7 extra iron to upgrade a stone pickaxe to iron. Netherite is part of the upgrade path and should be feasibly attainable to the general audience without mining 7 extra diamonds per upgrade. Mining seven extra diamonds isn’t difficulty, it’s tedium.

While I know the update has came out already, I think one way that maybe could be implemented into a mod or plugin of some sorts, is by having it be a drop from a boss. We haven't seen a boss in a very long time (last official one was the Elder Guardian, I don't think the warden is an official boss), and I feel having a recipe of some sorts to spawn said boss, maybe it being a nether themed boss, and have the template be a guaranteed drop from it would be very neat, and also make the recipe something that is accessible, maybe have it be a boss you can only fight after the wither, as the wither doesn't require netherite to be beaten, for example, a recipe I could think of off the top of my head for a summon for the boss, would be have it require one nether, 2 netherite ingots, and some other nether related items, maybe netherrack or quartz, while also having an alternative, but harder method of summoning the boss that doesn't need a recipe.
TL;DR : add a boss that drops the template, using a recipe to spawn it.

The biggest problem with the nether template is it’s almost impossible to find a bastion that hasn’t been already looted in any server you go to, it’s already super hard to travel in the nether and this update just made it mandatory to explore further if you want to progress.

  • @MollyOKami

My only problem with the templates is the loot table. Since everything is tied to the seed, there is a chance that you just won't be able to find them at all ( _cough cough_ Notch Apples). Some structures are already very rare & this just adds more & more frustration for something with mostly a decorative purpose. As far as upgrading to netherite, those should be VERY common, since netherite is so rare AND difficult to get. Those are things you could probably even allow for Wandering Traders to carry. After all, you need the diamond tool/armor (relatively easy to get) and the netherite (pretty difficult to get), so one easy-to-obtain item isn't going to hurt, especially since it would serve no other purpose.

Agree with a lot of the points, but Minecraft is honestly harder today because diamonds were easier to get than nowadays including notch apples that used to be craftable. I recently played through versions 1.0 - 1.5 and diamonds were super easy compared to now because stone is faster to mine than deepslate. Also playing a game for years on end will mean you will get better over time. I remember playing old versions and dying a lot due to me being new but replaying it made me realize skeletons were easy to deal with until 1.9 when their aim bot ai was added.

You just need to adapt. Skeletons shoot at a constant interval so you can predict when they are about to shoot, so you just move to the side right around when they shoot and then you start chasing immediately after. It's kind of like when you start rushing an enemy in an FPS game when someone missing you with their bolt action sniper, except literally holding A or D makes it a guaranteed miss. Plus, you have shields which make skeletons super easy. And if you are at a pre-shield point in the game, all you need to do is run circles around them and they will start killing each other if there are multiple.

It now will sit in your storage until later in the game or it will be trashed or wasted on one armor piece. If they were infinite use you and your friend could mark your early game armor with an early game item and in late game since you would already have tons of diamonds it wouldn’t matter if it is infinite or not. It’s no fun having an item like this need to be expensive to use

4:30 a point though about the late game and gold and iron being more important--you can farm both of those items automatically, or at least with an AFK farm. the same can't be said about diamonds, not without a huge investment into a massive redstone mining machine, far more effort than it takes to set up even a good iron or gold farm. so while yes, diamonds aren't as useful in the late game, few people are mining for that necessary gold and iron in the first place

  • @kawaiipiggy9143
    @kawaiipiggy9143 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

The one issue i have with that solution is that it essentially removes the need for diamonds for netherite. Technically yes, mining for diamonds would be easier, but a simple gold farm + barter farm would immediately make netherite pretty much identical for late game players and technical players to obtain. I'd definitely end up making a gold farm for that exact purpose, so I don't need to go mining if I ever die in the void or somewhere far out without my coordinates.

My only real train of thought for ideas to fix it, would be potentially adding more to the new archeology system in the End or Nether in some capacity, and giving that a chance to drop the template then you could add the chance to get netherite scrap as a rare find as well because I love the idea of the archeology system, but I feel it needs more adjusting as it stands. It might incentivize using the archeology system to get netherite armour rather than get your head caved in by Piglin Brutes, and while it would feel a bit out of place to find netherite templates in the End I still feel like the end needs some more love in some capacity, maybe add shulker drops or something. While I know it still has the server issue of too many players would need you to explore more I think it would add enough extra templates to maybe alleviate the issue
