    I read from a CDC prevention article that methanol has the weakest bactericidal action of the alcohols and thus seldom is used in healthcare. Which I clearly understand, but how much? They only measuring in terms of percentage (60 to 70%) but only for ethyl and isopropyl. My question is what is acceptable and what is not? 80%? 90%? 99%? And it's only a matter of short period of time of protection. (around 45 minutes, but still...)

    • @ditpook
      @ditpook 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As a 35 year microbiologist and referring to tests I actually performed, you should only be using 70% ethanol or Isopropanol (ethyl is better) and it has to be in contact for 10 minutes to seriously reduce counts of contaminants. That is why most hand sanitizers are a joke.
      There are actually research articles published about 20 years ago on this very subject (journal of applied microbiology) BETTER THAN ALL OF THESE ARE TO WASH YOUR HANDS IN WARM WATER AND SOAP. The scrubbing action provides a mechanical release of oils and soil on your hands taking contaminants with it.
      I don't know what fantasy world this presenter is in but essential oils are essentially NOT ANTIMICROBIAL. We tried to investigate this decades ago and the closest was tea tree oil which only worked a little when combined with a powerful antimicrobial. Water mixed with the proper level of alcohol works. Adding oils actually interferes with the antimicrobial action. This is how cosmetics suppliers make money in a crisis by lying about efficacy.
      Just go wash your hands.

    • @Kaotiqua
      @Kaotiqua 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ditpook While I agree that essential oils are not (reliably) antimicrobial, research that is 10 or 20 years old is hardly reliable either. Claiming research that is older is somehow more valid is like claiming one is healthy because they saw a doctor 10 or 20 years ago. I have a relatively high regard for the CDC, and would not call their recommendations "a joke". That said, washing one's hands is always the ideal, but as everyone knows, circumstances are rarely ideal, and we are not always standing 10 feet from a sink. When soap and water are unavailable, it is better to sanitize frequently, than not to do so at all.

    • @sebon11

      I'm DEFINIETELY not a pro person, but I think it doesn't matter as long as it's between 65 and 80 % (or more precisely if it's 68 or 74 %). So you can just fill up the cup up to 2/3 (and very little bit more then that?) with ethanol and 1/3 water, without giving care about exact ratio. I'm pretty sure about that, but of course you can wait for The Institute of Personal Care Science to give the response.

As you said, carbomer needs to be fully hydrated for about 60-90 mins. I was wondering what's the percentage of propandiol you added? The sepimax zen is so reliable you could handstir this and it would still come together, it would just take a little longer to hydrate. You could prepare, hand stir to disperse, cover and come back the next day, give it a final stir and it would be perfect- even by hand mixing!

      @@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401 hello and so many thanks as ever! I am doing this by hand currently at 8hrs after mixing ingredients but the solution is milky. I added 70% IPA (99.9%), distilled water and a glycerite instead of glycerine or propanediol. Then added 2.3% sepimax zen. 8hrs later I stirred the solution a bit; is milky and of course still not turned into a gel. Is this how it should be? Thank you!

    • @georgiazep
      @georgiazep 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @john doe the ipa can be bought either pure (eg 99.9%) or already diluted (70%). The recipe calls for pure IPA and you should use 70% of this in the formulation. Hope this helps!

    Hi. Thank you for your post. Is methylated spirit (purple colour) appropriate for making hand sanitiser? Is there any harm to health if methylated spirit is used to rub hands for sanitising purpose? Thanks.

    • @theinstituteofpersonalcare6401
      @theinstituteofpersonalcare6401  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don't use methylated spirits as you won't know the source; it is not intended for topical application and may not be suitable (some is just denatured ethanol, but you can't know this from just purchasing over a counter). Please don't use it, it may not be suitable/safe.
