- Are Chinese cars coming to North America? How BYD became the biggest EV car company and overtook Tesla. BYD dethroned Tesla in the fourth quarter of 2023 as the world’s top EV maker, selling more battery-powered vehicles than its U.S. rival. BYD is aggressively expanding globally, exporting over 240,000 cars across 70 countries last year. Elon Musk said in Tesla's Q4 earnings call that Chinese automakers will "demolish most other car companies in the world" unless regulators step in. With sights set on North America, will BYD come to the US and Canada soon? Is BYD better than Tesla? Find out in this video.

Bring them on. North American car prices are ridiculously high and they need a shaking up
Agreed 100 percent, these ass holes here need wakeup
You will not get them because it is not in the interest of the globalists in your country (I assume you are from the USA) just as it is in their interest to cause and support wars around the world in the name of "democracy" and "freedom".
When I read that over 70% of Americans have never been outside the US, it is clear to me that "freedom" is not a term that they really know.
Nah dude, neither Biden nor Trump will let them in
The problem is we should cut regulations on US auto makers first then cut the tariffs
@@lucisleesion8824 If America doesn't want to pay their workers anything they should at least let them buy cheap cars.
They says with no tariffs BYD EVs will be sold for ~11k. Even with a tarrif of 100% they still will be cheaper.
I worked in the 1980 and 90s in the automotive industry for a Japanese company. The amount of money being thrown at the American manufacturers by governments was incredible, but they still failed to stop the Toyotas and Hondas from taking a huge bite out of the market. The plus side was the Americans had to actually improve the quality of their product to survive at all, of course some did not. I remember when Hyundai enter the market with their cars, and they were garbage, the Pony was so cheap you could buy one to drive and one for parts and Hyundai is still here, not of the quality of Toyota or Honda but still better than many others.
It's not coming into North America, and we all know why.
national security ? lol
@@futuregeneration3687 Yeah, "lol", stuff like that, which China takes seriously on their own soil, the losers!
BYD not only excels in producing quality electric vehicles but also hybrids, recently claiming superior fuel efficiency compared to Toyota's models.
We need affordable EVs in Canada.
Someone at WH in US just has to bang the table and the Canada govt will just chicken out...
@@t4ac Actually it's not that simple. Someone pointed out that because many cars are assembled in Canada, if Chinese EV took over, then those jobs will be in jeopardy. So it's really a catch 22....

They WILL NOT BE AFFORDABLE.
When Japanese cars hit the US market in the early 70's look what happened.
I myself purchased an inexpensive '73 Toyota Corona right away!
Correct. but they were also required to have manufacturing plants in North America using local workers.
We can't trust quality of Chinese car.

Bad comparison. Japanese are at the top of best (reliable and low TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) cars.

Bring BYD here asap. EV is unaffordable. They are overpriced. We need price under $30k. for average people. No tariffs
Yes, I agree bring BYD here as soon as possible. If they can SELL a quality, inexpensive & reliable car here for $10,000 then WHY is this even a question? Look around your home most TV’s, wash machines, dryers, refrigerators, freezers are made in Japan, China or elsewhere. It used to be made in USA - no longer true. So why not cars & trucks? USA is an information / creation economy. Not manufacturing. So let’s give up auto production and stop kidding ourselves.

How can they be over-priced when almost every automaker loses money selling BEVs, including Chinese automakers?
It is funny to believe that Chinese cars will be sold in Canada at the same price as in China. Explore the other markets a little. Australia has no tariffs on Chinese EV and still a compact SUV from BYD there is like 40000cad while the same vehicle in China is 20k. Guess what Hyundai kona EV is already at that price (with incentives) here in Canada
The cost of producing cars in NA will be higher, higher labor and supply chain costs plus increased safety standards and regulations to follow here. I'd like to see their vehicles crash tested. If their vehicles are less safe, insurance costs will be high.
Each country has it's own rules and regulations and every auto manufacturing has to go through a process called homologation. NA and EU have higher standards which adds to the total cost of the end product. That does not factor in logistics and VAT which is separate from tariffs depending on the country.
China will price their cars according to what the market will bear.
@@frankk5477 If you are talking about BYD, most cars they sell in Europe got five stars in the Euro NCAP.
Which is no surprise, since the Chinese NCAP for the most part follow the same criteria as the European one.
You know one of the excuses the EU has on Chinese EVs is that, they are being sold too low the price right?
I would definitely purchase a $25K BYD vehicle.
As they said in one old Wendy's ad, having choice is better than not. The system where almost all major autmakers offer only huge trucks and SUVs for 60-120K, is unsustanable. The same can be said about the system of dealerships. I can buy a laptop or a T-short online, but I can't order a car online, without paying thousands to dealers.
Its the EVs that are overpriced though. They are sold at a loss, and yet even stealing $7.5K per vehicle from the American tax payer, are still generally very expensive and have horrific resale value due to replacement batteries that cost more than the vehicle brand new (again because they are sold at a loss). The solution is more vehicles like the 2025 Nissan Kicks and Chevy Trax, that are still very nice and practical but very affordable.
@@BoopSnoot The leading Chinese carmakers, as well as Tesla and Stellantis at least among the western ones, are already selling EVs at a profit, and if battery prices keep falling in line with what Goldman Sachs predicts EVs should cost less to make than equivalent fuel-powered cars for just about every carmaker before the end of the decade.
As for the battery replacement cost, that is mostly an issue with hybrids that use outdated battery chemistries that contain Cobalt and Nickel. Those chemistries are more expensive and degrade faster than the LFP batteries that Chinese carmakers are now using, and also the smaller the battery the faster it degrades, and western-made hybrids tend to have the smallest batteries among all EVs.
BEVs are for city driving. ICE, HEV, PHEV are for for highway.
As a former BEV owner, I definitely agree. I now own a hybrid.
BYD also build plug-in hybrid cars
th-cam.com/video/9IJNpZo7Ft4/w-d-xo.html
BEV, PHEV are very polluting, highly unreliable, with a huge TCO (Total Cost of Ownership), extremely dangerous, impractical and too controllable.
So today they are not only useless (the wrong solution to an unexisting problem) but they are a danger!
HEV is really good in city driving though, hybrids are good for highway, but not by much than others...
BYD EVs or any other EVs from China would be considered a major national security threat in the US and therefore would be banned.
That is the excuse they use but it is bull crap
Just need to realize that- all those over-priced iPhones are made in China too. As a non-Tesla EV owner, I welcome open market competition from BYD, Vinfast and all other companies.
It's not about the price, but the areas I live and work have no charging stations, what am I going to buy an EV for?
When price is good enough like $10k, you'll get one for sure. Most EV owners charge at home.
Or you could buy a BYD PHEV and charge at home and not worry about charging outside of home.
For those that can charge at home, get back home every day, and almost never drive more than the EV's range in a single day, even a complete lack of charging stations is no deterrent for regularly using the car in most scenarios that don't involve a road trip. Charging at home is usually the cheapest way to charge anyway (where I live charging at home costs roughly 80% less than buying fuel), and for those that have solar at home it's even cheaper.
For road trips, they can just rent a PHEV with some of the money saved on fuel.
The issue is for people that either can't charge at home or that consistently drive more than the EV's range in a single day.
Chinese EV cars will basically be banned in North America so people in North America will be stuck with the limited and overpriced choice they have now .
Most the American EV manufacturers are going bankrupt or close to it so only choice is the Tesla and that design is really starting to show its age .
With mandates forcing people to buy EV cars coming and gas cars phased out it should be interesting to see what people will drive for sure they will be expensive.
Some say we must protect the American car manufacturing jobs but there are a lot more people buying cars than making them and they will be forced to buy overpriced cars because the Chinese cars are banned .
The US government keeps saying the Chinese cars are cheap because the Chinese government gives money to the manufacturers.
But why when so much tax money goes to domestic manufacturers in free money and rebates on the sales aren’t the domestic cars not cheap ?
Consumers will get screwed in the end and inflation will just keep going up .
Polestar - China
Volvo - China
Tesla in many parts of thr World - China
BYD - China, the sky is falling is hypocritical of anyone saying so.
Is Canada concerned about the effects of a large amount of Chinese EV arriving at their ports? I know that some US auto makers have production in Canada, but I do not have any understanding of how Chinese EV will impact the Canadian economy. Thanks for a great video! Peace always.
Canada is a vassal of the USA and does as it’s told .Within days of the USA putting 100% tariffs on Chinese EV Canadian government started talking about the same thing .
Now they are even talking about banning Chinese investment in Canada because they are afraid BYD will invest billions to open a factory in Canada so that they can sell in the North American free trade zone .Should that happen Canada will really be in trouble with their puppet master .
Canada does not have an auto industry no such thing as a Canadian car only foreign manufacturers setting up factories because they got free money from the corrupt government.
Canada recently gave 40 billion free money to 3 foreign auto manufacturers to set up EV production but will ban the Chinese from even using their own money to set up a factory in Canada to create jobs for Canadians.
I would say it’s racist no other explanation for it .
In Canada there are no Chinese EV for sale anyways yet the government says it’s a problem.
There is the American Tesla cars made in China so should be interesting to see if they get a pass on tariffs
Tesla doesn’t sell their Chinese made cars in the USA because they won’t get the rebate and now will get 100% tariff so they ship to Canada and only sell USA made cars in the USA
Absolutely, I would buy a BYD without hesitation. My only question would be EV or PHEV.
I truly appreciate all of your knowledge! I do not want to get into politics here, but I know Biden signed a trade bill that leveed 100% taxes on Chinese built products. How do you think that will affect BYD? Seems like their car are still competitive even at that price.

BYD will just start building it's cars in Mexico to get around the tariffs. Which is a win for Mexico as well as China!
Chinese EVs, regardless of them assembled or manufactured in Mexico, will be slapped with 100% tariff.
You think the US is dumb and doesn't understand that?

The only concern I have is warranty support, part pricing, and parts in general. My experience in the past is that China doesn't have great support. They want to sell and be done with it. However, I hear Tesla support is horrible as well. Would I buy the 25k or 45k equivilent car? I would definately take the 25k car. EV prices and all new car prices are just too high. Something needs to wake these car manufacturers up.
BYD sounds reasonable in every aspect of an EV car. Your review was also favorable and suggesting it as an alternative to the other expensive EV cars.
This man's speech feels like AI
Do you see byd cars roaming around canada soon? I think even with a 25% tariff they're still very much more affordable than the cheapest ev or hybrid cars around. But, how about reliability issue for byd cars. I hope you could answer my question. Thanks
The BYD Seal is a very impressive vehicle for its price point. It's design, build quality, fit & finish, and interior quality are leagues ahead of the Tesla Model 3 that costs twice as much. Tesla is finished. It can't possibly compete.
Yes I will buy a Chinese vehicle. Can you please review BYD and other major brand EVs like NIO, Geely, and LI Auto. Please please please 🙏
I wonder what they will sell for when the Chinese Government subsidies end after American car manufacturing ends?
And ? That's an issue why ?
For the most part the subsidies have already ended. The subsidies were mostly for initial research and ramping up production, now China is letting the 100+ EV makers in China duke it out without much state help so only the strongest survive.
Don't forget that China started backing research in batteries and EVs back in the 90s, and have given strong incentives for their further development and use for two decades already; there is no effective oil lobby in China to block developments that could kill its business. Also, the earlier a subsidy is given, the stronger the effect it causes; a few hundred million in subsidies two decades ago has more effect than billions in subsidies now.
It's similar to what happens with solar; the US and Europe have been accusing China of artificially lowering the price of solar panels using subsidies for at least two decades already, China essentially killed production in other countries through price competition (for some solar panel components China controls as much as 95% of the market), and the price of Chinese solar panels not only didn't rise after China took control over the market, it's continuing to fall. The subsidies were a long time ago for research and setting up cost-effective supply chains, which brings long-lasting cost advantages that don't require continuing subsidies to remain effective.
China has stopped EV subsidies since 2023

If allowed we could actually drive an EV car far better than Tesla for $10,000. When the price of an automobile is the equivalent to a years salary or even two years salary, it is not sustainable. I’d buy two or three BYD’s!!! Still cheaper than a crap Tesla.
When a country is terrified about a product entering their market you tax the blazes out of it with massive tariffs. Exactly what American is doing.

Thanks to UAW American made cars are so expensive and not reliable.
Capitalism is all about competition. May the best corp win.
The question, no matter how cheap the vehicles are, where can we charge them, more than half the population in Toronto lives in condos and apartments. Assuming we do have enough public charging stations, which I doubt very much, the cost of charging will go through the roof with so many evs in demand. Also to charge an ev takes in a lot of voltage , imagine every residents plugged in their evs overnight on a hot summer day with millions of Ac compressor at full blast, next morning our city power grit will be in an inferno. Bottom line is , we do not have the infrastructures to accommodate evs for every household. Not even for another 20yrs
Every heard of solar ?
A power utility that can't plan for a gradual 10-years-long ramp up of electricity usage would, frankly, be something so badly managed that it would be better to just kick it out of the grid right now, regardless of how much trouble it would cause, to avoid larger problems down the road.
And we would likely have 15 to 20 years to plan for the increase in power usage, since EV sales are still ramping up and current gasoline powered cars will still be in use for many years.

You might also forget Tesla😂
What about the videos of exploding batteries in the BYDs highly censored in China ?
What about the Chinese EVs absolutely coming apart like a row of dominoes after a MINOR accident ?

What an unbeatable logic: 1.Chinese EVs will fall apart in a minor accident, and the battery will burn the driver and passengers into ashes.
2. As for the reason we seldom heard of it, here's why: it's censored by China without any possibility to prove it.
Unfortunately here comes the 3rd question: how could YOU know or prove what you believe? That is, are you capable of breaking the Chinese censorship?

Thus why Chinese EVs already dominate close to 90% of the EV market in the South American country where I live, whereas US and European EVs are seen as overpriced and dated (in large part because US and European carmakers tend to only send here outdated models). Yes, Mexico manufactures a large number of cars - but it's mostly to export to the US and Canada. Western carmakers setting shop in Mexico tend to prioritize making cars for the American market, cars that aren't exactly best sellers in Mexico, and often aren't even sold there. Those cars made for exporting don't need to be protected from Chinese imports.
Also, Mexico just elected the most left-leaning president ever, and one that has cutting CO2 emissions at the core of her policies. I truly doubt she will try to keep cheap EVs out of the country. I suspect she is more likely to instead invite Chinese EV brands to open factories in Mexico, more so because labor costs seem to be similar in both countries.

I don't live in Australia; instead I live in a South American country where almost 90% of the EVs sold are from Chinese brands.
Many of those sales are for Taxi and Uber drivers, BTW. Here recharging at home, or at a company-owned charger, saves roughly 80% on fuel costs compared with a gasoline-powered car, so EVs that aren't driven more than their range every day and can charge at home or at the company's parking lot save a huge amount.
Also, real world data here on Chinese EV fires is mostly inexistent - because so few of those caught fire yet, despite the thousands sold every month, that there aren't enough incidents to even calculate how likely they are to catch fire. Though we do have enough data to know they are far, far safer in this regard than anything that uses liquid fuel.

First off, most people really don't want an EV because they can't stack up against ICE vehicles for cost and infrastructure. Sticker price is only part of.the cost. High insurance rates also must be considered. You also have a total unknown when it comes to reliability and resale value for the Chinese cars. They have a massive labor cost advantage that Western companies simply can't compete against. The way I think this should be approached is to give the legacy automakers relief on CAFE standards and bring the price of gas down. The big problem with EVs is the lack of infrastructure so they will never be the primary or only vehicle in a household, unless they live in a city or don't go more than 150 miles from home. That wouldn't change for at least 15 years, and only if you can get the government to work hand in hand with the utilities. EVs are only here because of the green scam mandate from the left. I guarantee you those Chinese EVs are getting charged in their homeland from coal fired electric plants. I am also sure they have children digging out lithium from mines with their bare hands.

They pose a security threat, unfortunately we live in that world and its the Chinese fault, otherwise as much Ive seen in Europe they are not impressive at all atm.
China doing so good
I'll buy two 25k BYDs, if not 3, for the family.
The quality is still questionable
@@expsterm1 prove it
I would definitely buy a BYD EV.
I hope BYD does come to USA, but it won't be for a while, until then, tesla is still king
Unfortunately, BYD cars are experiencing an extremely high level of customer complaints in China, an order of magnitude higher than Tesla's cars. It would be nice to have the choice, but you get what you pay for (and that's best case!)
Prove it . Waiting
Build a factory in the US put people to work, Toyota did that
But when it comes to quality and reliability..."Chinese EVs have been criticized for poor build quality, catching fire easily, and lacking essential safety features. In 2023, the Emergency Management Department reported that on average, eight EVs caught fire every day, a 32% increase from the previous year."
Source ,m proof ??? ?
Where is that report ?
Emergency dept of what?
Where are those 8 evs per day
Who made the report ? Prove it
@@JonySmith-bb4gx th-cam.com/video/9f9UdN6XEHU/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
@@JonySmith-bb4gx Keep in mind that over *170,000* gasoline powered cars catch fire per year in the US, which is close to 500 per day. 8 per day seems low in comparison.
@@JonySmith-bb4gx He has been watching too many anti-China TH-cam channels bashing China.
@@FabioCapela I asked the loser above to prove his 8 a day claim
yes china produces but the problem is no body actually buy them
If no one buys them . Why are they sold out ?
Well, over 60% of the EVs sold in the world are sold inside China.
It's part of the reason traditional carmakers find it very hard to compete with Chinese EVs. China produces EVs at a scale that no other country could match. Heck, if you add all other countries besides China together it still wouldn't reach the economies of scale China can currently reach in EV production.
how are these chinese fire hazards even allowed in Canada. what happened to our safety standards.
Even the japanese are cheating on safety standards to try to get their vehicles to meet the north american standards. govt obviously looking the other way to comply with turd-eau's EV mandates.
just keep in mind you get what you pay for when the vehicle burns to the ground with your house AND you also get to support the communist regime (PLA) with every purchase.
Personally I won't even park next to a chinese or any other EV in a parking lot.
Why don't u prove that they are fire hazards ?
Waiting
Oh u will . I ll park next to you
@@JonySmith-bb4gx These people got their made-up "information" from watching anti-China TH-cam channels.
I am in China now, main land and hk, and I have seen a lot of tesla
And I saw allot of byd
I am in Afghanistan and have seen a lot of Ford and Chevys piled up next to burned united slums of America military equipment.
Damn Chinese!.
You might want to look at some independently produced videos showing the quality of these Chinese cars. The ones that crashed by themselves, catch fire and incinerate the occupants because they cannot get out in time, fall apart. Talking as though they are coming and they're going to be great slaps of absolute ignorance. And then of course there's the small matter of a 100% tariff
Recently, BYD DOLPHIN and BYD SEAL have received a five-star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) under the latest ANCAP testing criteria.6 Nov 2023
@@abdulazizabdullah6497 get real, that organization doesn't test anything. They just look at the specifications and sign off. Because they are paid to do so. It is not like the American government which crash tests vehicles
Name a 10K car that would have better safty than BYD.
Why videos ? Why not ncap test results
They are official done by independent experts .

@hara, the world does.
I would definitely buy a chinese EV. Seems like the U.S. and other countries only build Luxury SUV EV's and don't build what the consumer really wants. What we want are EV's that cost under $25,000 and more car options. Not everyone can afford to pay $50,000 for a car. The U.S. is slow to adopt new designs. Thats why our cars look so boring compared to other countries. And as usual, American build quality sucks. Just look at JEEP. Been crap since I was a kid.
