I know you put this out a long time ago but this was the best and only video that showed how to disconnect the linkage and shift lever to get the lower off. Thank you!!
Thank you , thank you ,thank you !!! This is the second time we have used this video over the past few years with excellent results. We had spent a few days struggling with the shift shank & shifter cable linkage connector wasting many hours , with a few choice words for the engineers or designers responsible for that less than desirable connection, anyways, great info !!!!!!
This is an amazing video. Most people do not provide this level of detail. It has been about 5 years since I replaced my Johnson 60 water pump and this will help me a ton! Thank you for putting this video together!
Just bought a Bass Tracker with a 1990 50HP Evinrude on it that needs a new water pump. I'm pretty handy and figured I could handle the job on my own. I watched your video to get an idea of what I will be getting into. Never worked on an outboard before but after watching I feel pretty confident I can handle it. Thanks for the video you did a great job.
This video was very helpful and you should do more of them. I replaced my pump after viewing your video which saved me a ton of money doing it myself. Thanks
The best instruction video for water pump change I've seen yet. I just got a pontoon boat with 70 hp 1977 Johnson engine runs good to my surprise planning to change water pump right away. Thanks for your video.
Phenomenal video. I'm working on a 70 horsepower and have not been able to find pretty much any information and you have tremendously helped me get a lot farther than I was before today.
I have a 70 hp Johnson. When I do the water pump I will fallow your instruction. Very good video on lower unit removal ,water pump and lower unit install. Thanks
Well.. I almost literally gave up on my evinrude 70 yesterday until I saw your video. I didn't know omc went from a bolt to a pin on the bottom shifter linkage and i had no idea what to do at that point..Turns out my impeller was OK but it was a plugged thermostat. Thanks for the video sir!
Hey Ralph, nine years later and you’re still helping people out. Thank you so much. It worked me through the water pump replacement on my motor. Thanks for the video.
I ihave to do this job in the coming week-end for my nephew, i'm a retired millwright so mechanicwise i should not have any bad surprises thanks to your video, one thing i was happy to leatn was that it comes in a kit, again very nice vdéo thank you very much.
Great video. I'm working on a 110 Johnson so there are things that are different but you've done such a good job explaining how things work that I'm better equipped to figure out what's what with my motor. I've watched several videos that are specific to my motor that didn't do such a good job. Thanks for posting it and I loved the Obama comment!
I just wanted to say thank you for putting out this video it's helped myself in along with 100 other people on your comment last year and to better understand the logistics of the impeller and how it works and and what information is needed to to put it back in there and make sure that everything is thoroughly done and and I appreciate that cuz it's not a lot of information out there on these motors and yeah thank you I appreciate it
Thanks posting this, even if it's been a while. I've done an Evinrude 115 etech, but I couldn't figure this out without a tutorial because it's not just one pin to pull. Cheers!
I definitely like your style, you explained everything perfectly I’m going to attempt to replace my water pump on my 60 hp Johnson motor you’ve been a very good help thank you keep the videos coming
Thank you so much sir, that motor is exactly the same as mine, your teaching is so clear and understandable and easy to learn so I'm gonna try it I've never ever messed with aboat motor by replacing parts so thank you for your time sir its greatly appreciated
Watching many videos to disarm my 88 spl lower unit. TODAY I TAKE IT OUT !! I found that it was different from those with the pin. looking for 88 90 110 all different .. ahy I found your video. helpful to put it back !! Now I go reseal and new water pump. and go fishing soon !! thank
Thank you for making this video! You were very detailed and informative. It has helped me with my impeller replacement. I appreciate the time and effort you put into it to help others!
I appreciate your video on disconnecting the shift linkage! I would have broke the pin thinking it pushed out. Instead the pin is part of the unit and it just twist and pulls out. Thank you!
Thank you for making this! I feel like I can now tackle this basic project on my 70 VRO and save some $$$.... I understand this is a must for preventative maintenance.
This video saved me, I was completely stumped about how to get the shift shaft free and then I saw this video and now the job is done. He shows how to do the tricky bits. I have his next video ready for the carbies (why three of them?) Thanks
Thx for posting! Im buying a 73 vintage boat tomorrow n the guy said it overheats due to the impeller he has the new part n it just needs to be swapped out. I feel better about buying it now. Ty
Thanks so much for the video! The explanation of the shift linkage disengagement was worrying me. Now I feel confident to start the job. I didn't see you use a torque wrench or retap the bolt holes. I was debating buying an SAE tap kit and torque wrench, but if I don't need to spend another 100 bucks, that would be great. My (1998) 90 hp VRO has only seen salt water since a rebuild in 2007, though I always flush in fresh water after every trip.
where is bottom oring under impeller i noticed new bottom plate is way diffrrent from original with no hole aswell is this something to be worried bout bro??
Excellent video. Plastic key failed for some reason. Also noted that a six blade impeller with three cut off had been installed. Guess you sometimes have to use what you have available. Thank you.
Great video, broke off the skeg with snowblower and thought it would be easier to weld with the lower end off, might as well change pump well it is off if i can find one. Mine is a 1989 evinrude 40 hp that looks close to the same style. Thank you!
Ralph great video tnx for your effort. Ive replayed it several times and cant quite understand the part about adjusting the shift rod.Hw would it get out of adjustment. What am I missing???? Tnx Jim
Noticed the upper pump housing (that meets with the water intake tube) is held on with only (1) bolt. Other similar Evinrude models use (3) bolts and have (2) o-rings inside.
hello there I have a question about the two o-rings on the shaft I just removed my lower unit and there where (NO O-RINGS)should I try and find replacements or do I not need them thanks for the video very helpful
I have this same motor, where does water squirt out out? I get water out of the exhaust but very little water coming out anywhere else. This is when I am using the flush muffs with a hose
How long should your shift shaft be to get it close to the right length. I thought you had made a rod or something that you checked it with before putting the lower unit back in. Great video.
Ralph, having trouble getting the shift rod to not spin when trying to slide the lower unit back into place. Any recommendations for how to keep it from spinning?
Foi muito útil este vídeo para mim muito obrigado por compartilhar os seus conhecimentos porque eu tenho um motor de popa iverunde 1995 60 Hp e presizava fazer esta manutenção
that video helped heaps ,but to disconect the gear rod,,,the evinrude i have seems to be the same model as the one your working on here, not sure how to check what model engine im working on cheers bryan from australia

I've watched many videos to learn about boat engines. You talked about details no one else did. thanks.
This is an amazing video. Most people do not provide this level of detail. It has been about 5 years since I replaced my Johnson 60 water pump and this will help me a ton! Thank you for putting this video together!
Best lower unit/impeller video on the web.
I don't know why I didn't just do this myself years ago. Thank you for taking the time to make the video. You saved me from taking the boat in!

Hey there, I can’t find a water pump for my 70hp Johnson, no one seems to have it. Where did ya get parts parts for yours if ya don’t mind me asking?
Great video- best lower unit video I’ve seen so far
I have a 70 hp Johnson. When I do the water pump I will fallow your instruction. Very good video on lower unit removal ,water pump and lower unit install. Thanks

This was a life saver today when I did a water pump service on my friends boat. Thanks a bunch for making this video!
Hey Ralph, nine years later and you’re still helping people out. Thank you so much. It worked me through the water pump replacement on my motor. Thanks for the video.
Yes very good, no one ever explains the shift pin removal in any detail, they just say this is where it is. Thanks from Australia
again a nice video tutorial.follow this mans guide and you wont go wrong. he is very clear in the instructions and correct.
I ihave to do this job in the coming week-end for my nephew, i'm a retired millwright so mechanicwise i should not have any bad surprises thanks to your video, one thing i was happy to leatn was that it comes in a kit, again very nice vdéo thank you very much.

2 years since I first watched this video and it still is worth the watch.
The best video by far on removing the lower unit, Thank you, easy to follow and was well explained.
Thank you very much for taking the time to do this video. I feel that I can tackle this job with confidence. 👏👏👍

Finally, a video that actually explains what you need to know in detail. Thanks for your video, I also wish never... just glad its over.
Thanks posting this, even if it's been a while. I've done an Evinrude 115 etech, but I couldn't figure this out without a tutorial because it's not just one pin to pull. Cheers!
Best explanation video yet! I have an 04 200 Ficht and the linkage is giving me a fit. Thanks for posting this!!
I definitely like your style, you explained everything perfectly I’m going to attempt to replace my water pump on my 60 hp Johnson motor you’ve been a very good help thank you keep the videos coming
Thank you. Just fixed my Johnson 70hp because of your tutorial
Well done! I’m going to have to do this to my exact motor and you have helped me get over the anxiety of working on it!
Thank you so much sir, that motor is exactly the same as mine, your teaching is so clear and understandable and easy to learn so I'm gonna try it I've never ever messed with aboat motor by replacing parts so thank you for your time sir its greatly appreciated

Great video only thing I wish it showed was you reconnecting the linkage thanks!
I appreciate your video on disconnecting the shift linkage! I would have broke the pin thinking it pushed out. Instead the pin is part of the unit and it just twist and pulls out. Thank you!
Thanks mate you helped me do my evinrude 60hp 2 stroke and it was easy after seeing your video, new water pump kit on order. Cheers 🍻
Thank you for making this! I feel like I can now tackle this basic project on my 70 VRO and save some $$$.... I understand this is a must for preventative maintenance.
I'm gonna tackle this job soon!! I have full confidence after watching this video. thank you.
Great video, could not be better, highly recommended. Please put 1988 in title since the lower unit removal is different from later years.
Excellent video. Loved the commentary and detailed explaining of everything. Thanks for making it!
Thank you. I think I can take my Evinrude apart now with confidence.
Hey Ralph, thanks for the video. I've got a 1979 Johnson 70 hp and this helped a lot. Cheers!
Fantastic video! This is why I love TH-cam! I'll be doing this to my 90 hp Johnson this weekend. Thanks!
the best video on changing the impeller thanks T. Ligsay
This video saved me, I was completely stumped about how to get the shift shaft free and then I saw this video and now the job is done. He shows how to do the tricky bits. I have his next video ready for the carbies (why three of them?)

You did great and helped me understand what I have to do this weekend with my motor! Thanks!
Nice work! I was stymied for days on the shift linkage issue. I have a 1989 88 spl and none of the info matched up but this one did Thanks!!!
Thanks so much for the video! The explanation of the shift linkage disengagement was worrying me. Now I feel confident to start the job.

My (1998) 90 hp VRO has only seen salt water since a rebuild in 2007, though I always flush in fresh water after every trip.
This video is exactly what I was looking for and you answered my main question with the first step
Thanks very much for the video. Laughed at the coffee part :)

where is bottom oring under impeller i noticed new bottom plate is way diffrrent from original with no hole aswell is this something to be worried bout bro??
Good job sir. Very informative and wanted to refresh my memory. Thank for sharing.
Excellent video. Plastic key failed for some reason. Also noted that a six blade impeller with three cut off had been installed. Guess you sometimes have to use what you have available. Thank you.
Hey Ralph the video is very helpful. I would liked to have seen the reattachment of the shift linkage, someone need to by you a tripod for Christmas.
Great video, I've done this but it's been a long long time and wanted a good refresher course.
thanks for sharing the video. love the commentary ralph!
Excellent video thank you very much very detailed. My wife likes your voice.

This was an excellent video. Really helped with a few key tips. Especially disconnecting the gear linkage. Thanks so much. #firstwaterpumpchange
Loved the video and humor. Lower end on my Evinrude seems to have locked up so I'm diving in head first. Any suggestions?
Perfect! Just the video I was looking for!! Thank you so much !!
Just what I needed, thanks Ralph.
Good job, the only thing I think you should have done was get someone to video for you to show the part about getting the impaler into the pump unit.
Ralph great video tnx for your effort. Ive replayed it several times and cant quite understand the part about adjusting the shift rod.Hw would it get out of adjustment. What am I missing???? Tnx Jim
Excellent video Ralph, Thank you.

Couldn’t have done better myself! Great job!

Great video.
Step by step done correctly.
How long should your shift shaft be to get it close to the right length. I thought you had made a rod or something that you checked it with before putting the lower unit back in. Great video.
Great instruction only thing i would have added was remember what gear u started in and mark the shift linkage position
Ralph, having trouble getting the shift rod to not spin when trying to slide the lower unit back into place. Any recommendations for how to keep it from spinning?
Thanks for the education. Well done.
Foi muito útil este vídeo para mim muito obrigado por compartilhar os seus conhecimentos porque eu tenho um motor de popa iverunde 1995 60 Hp e presizava fazer esta manutenção
Great video thank you.
Can you do a video on the gear case on that same motor? I got that same motor on my boat.
Very informative, great job on the video.
