Pectus carinatum is a childhood condition in which the sternum (breastbone) sticks out more than usual. It is believed to be a disorder of the cartilage that joins the ribs to the breastbone.
I'm 16 and I have a very severe case that you can see even when I'm wearing a jacket. I tried two braces over a span of two years with absolutely no results other than extreme pain. Last week I saw a new doctor who told me that my chest had hardened prematurely and my case was much too severe for a brace. I will be having the surgery next month and I'm truly so excited to finally be free. Years of insecurity will finally be over. To anyone who's suffering through this terrible condition I'm sorry but there is light at the end of the tunnel

I’ve been wearing my brace for almost seven months for 20 hours a day and have seen massive improvement. The doctor says I will be out of the brave in about a month or two. I can’t wait for it to be over. Reading these comments makes me grateful that mine was not half as severe.

I only have this on the right side of my chest. It sticks out a bit and is visibly noticeable when I am not flexing my chest. Will a brace be able to fix this problem?
I have the exact same problem man. It sucks because I've been making some gains and my right pectoral muscle flared out so hard I just stopped eating and lost the muscle. This shit sucks.

Im 23 years old and ive dealt with this my hole life, i guess mine is mild or maybe a little bit worse in my opinion, i get ask about it all the time and it gets quite annoyed sometimes because i get self conscious I am about it. It change my life and how people look at me. I wish i would of done something sooner when i was younger. I always asked myself “why me, why does it have to be me, why cant I have a normal chest like everyone else I hate it!” but I just accepted it and kept going. Back in high school i lift weights for 3 years and it help out a lot didn’t really notice that much, I felt good about myself and after i graduated highschool I quit lifting weights and my chest started to show back up again since I stopped. Now i just keep going try to ignore it and how people look at me or think about me
U still can wear the brace. Im 20 and bracing on my own. In few days arrive my TruLife brace. U can buy it online.
Just make sure ur chest is a Bit flexible and just wear the fckkng brace Even if its take longer

no one cares about you and I'm telling you that you can have pectus carinatum and no one will judge you because they care about themselves as much as you care about yourself and in fact I have pectus carinatum and the truth is I don't care except that the bone sticks out of my shirt and it really makes me feel special to have a condition that only 1% of people have 1/1500 and yes I take off my shirt in school swimming pools where there are many boys and girls I take it off and no one looks at me or laughs at my condition so you should not feel ashamed..

simple this takes time i was told to try to sleep on my chest this worked for me and my sons it is hard and unconformable but like braces on teeth it will work and now my grandson is in the process this is inherited and nothing to get woried about we are all different and this can be done it takes about a year but it works for every one that i know that has tried this

Ayee just found out I had it today. Good thing I caught it early I found out not because I noticed the bumps, I did a bit but didn’t think anything too serious, but the main reason was the sharp pain I got randomly. Got it checked out turns out I have pigeons chest so I am getting a brace soon. Hope it turns out well and I’m lucky I didn’t need surgery for it. If anyone else is going through this just know that you aren’t alone.

i'm from philippines. i hope the brace is available here. my son has this bone deformity. i noticed this when he was nine months. my mother don't believe me that his upper left rib is kind of more noticeable than the right side. but as he grow older it now became noticeable. it's not common here so other doctors didn't know about this. after this pandemic, i will go to a orthopedic pedia so that my son will have a check up. and will have a clear understanding about a cure to this or a remedy. btw my son is turning 4, next yr.

I'm from Brazil I also regret not having used it but we didn't know about this deformity and what it was it looks like your shoulders shrugged I went to the gym now I'm in crossfit I have a lot of difficulty developing Shoulders you have these same problems
@@Destroyer1681 100% my shoulders are underdeveloped and weak. my chest is strong, i can bench press 300, but can only overhead press 110. maybe if you work rear delts more it will even out

I am 15 years old, and I have this, I tried working out and wearing a case for it, but it didn't work, yes, it reduced it, but not a lot. Some doctors are telling me that there is time to fix it through working out, but is started to have an in pact on my back. Another doctor told me I need surgery and I am in fact a little late. I don't know what to do, so I came to see if anyone can help me out.

I had pigeon chest defect as a child and 6 years old this pediatrician said it was symptom of an artial septatl defect
This might help some people since it helped me a little but some massages can help it a little, it isn’t a way that completely gets rid of it but it does help so if anyone is struggling maybe try this 🤷🏻♀️ it might have been a one time thing when it worked for me but it might be worth a try

ive had this brace since last year the first three months i didn’t want to wear it but trust me when i tell u know i feel so dumb for not wearing it i would have been out of this but i only need abt 2 or 4 months left all glory to God for allowing me and my family to be blessed 🙏🏼

I noticed this myself when I was like 13-14 that was 35 ago. Visited the doctor but only mentioned surgery. It was bothering me a lot and i kept pressing down on it as a habbit. Later on in my 20s i totally forgot about it especially when hair grew around my chest and started the gym. Alas, only a few days a go I fewlt a pain at the area and it all came back to me. I am depressed atm especially when I think (pretty sure) my boy has it. He is 6. I dont know if we have this brace apparatus in the UK. Can anynone help?

To be honest, I wish I could have gone back and gotten the surgery instead of the braces. They are so annoying and I was never able to completely get rid of the condition.
I remember noticing this on my chest and i went to the doctor when i was 13. They told me it was normal during puberty and it’ll go away. Im 20 now and i still have it

Four months late, but I would suggest flying to America or another country where surgery is available since you’re eighteen and it has probably hardened. Of course, I understand that this can afford lots of money though 😔

For reference i have kyphosis and nearly 9 inches of chest, kinda like a shark Fin.

It will not get better. If anything it will get worse until you stop growing. If it bothers you, ask your parents to talk to your primary care doctor about getting a referral to a doctor who cant set you up with a brace or surgery, whatever is more appropriate.
Personally I also recommend you to go to a doctor. The earlier you get treatment, the more flexible your chest wall is, the better. As Kevin said, it can get worse, it did for me throughout the years but I couldn't get treatment because the doctors didn't know what I had. The good news is that probably you are still on time to be treated by bracing without needing surgery.

@@blacsteve I had this brace from 14-17. In my case, I wore it 24/7 for about a year and a half (except showering and exercise), and then only at night for ~2 years. The first month is rough on your skin and your sternum is a little sore, but other than that it's fine. Totally transformed my confidence. Before I was made fun of in school and afraid to take my shirt off, but now I have no trouble. This device was 110% worth it.

They do, get it checked by them and get it over and done with early. It's harder and takes longer to treat later on in their life.
Does the brace help with the flare up ribs too or is it just the chest?
I think that as the pigeon chest goes down the flaring ribs also go down but I’m not sure

@@mdzafariqbal438 My tip would be to get it checked by a doctor or specialist. They would then refer you to a prosthetic center or something like that. From there they would just get your measurements and get you a brace.

I have questions: Does the cartilage grow abnormally or just off course? Is it a birth defect or did I just acquire it? (my mom thinks it it because of bad posture)

Hello. I am 21 years old and I have this problem on one side of my chest. It is not very severe but it is noticeable and it makes me so self conscious and insecure. Not only my chest itself but also the ribs are noticable bumped.
So, I wanted to know if this brace will help me since it might have hardened so much that the brace might not be able to help?

I think I have this but I cannot tell as I have a bit of fat on the bottom of my belly.
