Gustar Barrow originally, from Guyana grew up with a Fila named Duke. On a hunting trip Gustar credits Duke with saving his life or at least from great harm, when Duke took down a Wild Boar only feet from a young Gustar.
Fila Brasileiro is also known as the Brazilian Mastiff. The word "Filar" in Portuguese literally means "hold, arrest, grab". The breed is a "Catch dog", a dog that "bites and not loose".
The Fila Brasileiro is believed to be a descendant of the 15th-century English Mastiff, bloodhound, bulldog and Rafeiro do Alentejo. The Fila Brasileiro breed was bred and raised primarily on large plantations and cattle farms where they originated.
They were taught to chase down jaguars, cattle, and other animals, as well as runaway slaves. The dogs would grab the slave or animals by the neck and hold them until the farmer arrived. This instinct can be observed among puppies when they are playing.
My father has had over a dozen Filas... We had them around my family while growing up and would walk circle around me and my sister at our property. My father told me one time when i was young i started walking down our dirt road trying to leave and the dog came and picked me up by my shorts and carried me back home. I do disagree with what he said about the dog being friendly to other dogs, ive seen a fila pick up a pitt and shack it like a rag doll until it was dead. This breed is beautiful but not to be messed with by the untrained.
Hey Guys. I have has several Dog breeds in my life. Like mastino, alano, great dane, fila , mastif, alabai and Cane Corso. Honestly, No other breed reach a fila. But now i turned to the original fila brasileiros. They are simular looking but still a fully working Dog that also protects u from big Cats and so on. The fila protects u against Humans or dogs. But If u have a Farm and need the ultimate Farm Dog, that protects u, Herd Lifestock and u can uae for hunting, than the OFB should BE Ur Dog.

Hy guys, I'm Brazilian and I need to say that this dog is not for a normal family, he has a natural "ojeriza", he does not accept any person that is not part of the family, if you do not have experience with protection dogs, do not have a Fila, Fila means bite, hold and not letting go in Portuguese.
I reinforce Marcelo's argument. My family had one years ago, extremely kind with people of the house but very aggressive with strangers. Took me months to educate him to ignore people in the street while walking. Another fact about the breed, they were used to protect the cattle from jaguars in the rainforest too
Thanks man, we are proud and we take care of the breed, yes. We have some other excellent ones for guard, like the Brazilian dogue, and the "bulldogue Campeiro".
yeah you really don't want one hanging off your leg/ripping it off
Marcelo Bus you know your dog shit!!! you mentioned the military bloodline!!!
Fila is not that much. This black one is the best one I have ever see...
Fila is a special dog. Don't get one if you have any doubt you can keep it as long as it lives. They are like white on rice with the family but do not like strange adults. You can try to socialize them but you will likely have a problem one day. They have insane defense drive and will not hesitate if they feel threatened. They are not afraid of anything.
They are fearless
Exactly
Best documentary of this breed I have seen they are spectacular animals and will give their lives for you but they are not normal pets like a Labrador. These animals may look docile and sweet but will bite in a millisecond if they feel someone is challenging their owner or property even the people that say they are "good with dogs". I never locked my house until I owned a Fila and then I locked the house for the intruders protection not mine. That being said when they are with you they are teddy bears and you have nothing to fear but never forget the fact these animals work and their job is protecting their herd and pack. Do not get one of these dogs without having a huge wallet, fenced in property, and reading everything you can about their behaviour. They are a bigger liability than a firearm and can be just as lethal.
But there's no such thing as aggression i n the dna.......well, thats what all the idiots say anyway.
This is not true, I know this breed of dog, he can take care of a baby without any risk.

You are completely wrong, I am Brazilian and this dog really is a dog selected for the sole and exclusive function of work. It is impossible to train this dog to socialize, or to have it in the backyard of a big city like it was some kind of pet. If you don't believe:

Activate the automatic caption and have it translated, just see the difference in behavior towards these three dogs. Nobody in Brazil would be stupid enough to approach a Fila without being in his everyday environment, because everyone knows the result. I could approach any breed of dog, with permission from the owner, but I would never approach a Fila.
they are really loyal to their owners, my neighbor had a fila for like 10 years, i used to pass by his house everyday for all of these 10 years and his dog NEVER gave me any sign of kindness at all, they only love their owners but its true love and loyalty for his group

One of my coworkers runs a Fila Brasileiro club here in South Florida. I had always assumed the breed were just like American hound dogs; slow and lazy (no offense to any hound lovers). But I was very suprised how much drive and energy his dogs have.
they were used to get runaway slaves, and I'm not saying that they should bring the slave alive, if you know what I mean... this a vicious dog, in doubt don't get close.
This isn't a Fila Brasileiro. They are not black, this is a mastiff.

Talvez fosse mestiço como o preto do vídeo.
absolutely the best dogumentary to date!..Very in depth no fluff..told it like it is. Great job Zeke
Gustar Barrow did such a fantastic job of describing exactly how Filas behave and how much guidance they need from their people to help them be happy, content, trustworthy dogs.
I really appreciate how candid the interviewees are in all Dogumentary videos. I foster a lot of giant breeds and when I see what other channels post about them, I can see why so many end up in the pound or get surrendered to rescue. The other channels make it sound like even very complicated breeds who absolutely need leadership and someone who will enforce boundaries are great for even the meekest owners, and it's such a disservice to the dogs and the people who end up with them. Dogumentary always plays it straight. Much appreciation!
We have many breeds , mostly large Mastiff breeds like Presa Canario, Fila Brasileiro and Cane Corso, but the Fila Brasileiro is the best home/estate guardian in my opinion
Awesome videos!
I adopted the CUTEST Black Lab mix from the local shelter.
As she continued to grow it was very clear she’s NOT any kind of a Black Lab.
Indigo is almost 2 years old and I recently got the results of her DNA test.
💯 Fila Brasilia…
I figured she’s a mastiff mix but no, she’s a full blooded FILA.
Indigo is the TOUGHEST Dog I’ve ever trained!
So much work but she’s 💯 worth it !!
Im 14 and have a Brazilian mastiff. She's very sweet and the most loyal dog in the world. She loves to cuddle just as much as the next dog but she is there to protect us if anything goes wrong.
How is the experience, since it been 3 years now, I would really like to know how the dog is with you as my family is in the process to buying a dog
Oh, mastiff Brasilian is a of bests guard dogs in WOLRD, im luck , Fila brasileiro(🇧🇷) a of breeds most stronger of world!. Sorry, I not speak right all English...

You have my dream dog! I usually have Great Danes but this time I have a Kangal. She's a HANDFUL but she was abused because of her instincts which made her worse. She's becoming a utility dog also...she amazes me. The hardest thing is teaching her self control. She actually looks to me to control her. I love my big beautiful girl ♡

Very good video. As, there is so little information in the U.S. about Filas any video is a plus. I just picked up my Fila puppy a week ago from a small breeder in South Carolina, who is originally from Brasil. The dog in this video while he moves and his proportions are very much like your typical Fila, black is not an accepted coat color by the CAFIB (the top organization that sets the breed standard for Fila Brasileiro in Brasil). Nonetheless, a very strong looking dog. Trust me real Filas are hard to find in the U.S. It took me a year of looking, and making friends with those who have experience with the breed. I couldn’t be happier with my decision. Other posters are correct; Filas are not for the meek of heart, but they are one of the few natural guard breeds that mix loyalty with a natural alertness to danger. As one breeder/trainer from Elói Mendes told me, virtually all of the traditional guarding breeds need to be trained to execute proper bite work, with Filas often times it seems like you are really training them when not to bite. As long as you understand the responsibility of owning a Fila, and are willing to invest the time and money into proper training, they are wonderful dogs. The next few years of training and nurturing should be fun!
In the 70's there was a great controversy of the Fila Brasileiro's confiderations. There were many reports of mixing the Great Dane and the Neapolitan Mastiff, then obtaining the black Fila. Before, there was no black color. Currently the black standard is excluded from CAFIB, because we know that in the past there was really a mixture with other breeds to increase the size and muscle mass of the Fila Brasileiro. This was CBKC / FCI's biggest mistake.

This videos you guys make are AWESOME. Really informative. Been binge watching them and got so happy to see you have one on Filas ! Really awesome ! Thanks for the quality content !
Love Filas. People tremble, here in Brazil, when you tell them you own a Fila. When he said the dog loved the biting work, that's a Fila thing. "Fila" is a verb in portuguese, it means "hold/grab" in portuguese. That's what they were bred to do. Find than bite and hold down people. Another thing that is very prominent about Filas is that they can't be bought with food or anything else. If you're a stranger the only thing you'll get from a Fila is teeth. The bad thing about that is that you HAVE to lock your dog when you get visitors. They don't make friends. My uncle had one and so did my grandfather. Filas are great.
OBS: Is the name of the dog "Jao" ? I'm Brazilian and "John" in portuguese is actually "João". Some people call guys named "João" by the nickname "Jão". But it's not an actual name. It's just a nickname. It's like an abbreviation of "João".
Fila's are King!
The verb is filar, with R in the end
@@sergioreinert na verdade é fila, filar é a ação da palavra.
Thanks for sharing this. I’ve had 2 filas over the past16 years and just lost another one to bloat. I really appreciate your excellent video, you explained them perfectly. They are not for everyone but for protecting the family. Funny how their disposition is always the same with all of them. Also, if I ever get another one I will never feed kibble again because although I was careful it still eventually happened anyway. One note about their drool because they sling it, get it off your vehicle paint quickly because it stains. Excellent dog!!
I had a fila for years. He gave an accurate description of the file. Its really loyal to family but especially to one specific family member. They are beautiful dogs but are not for the faint of heart.
The fila I have is a brindle I love her my family has had two! Hope to have one after college and stuff :) and pretty much has done the same stuff with the squirrels. Really good doc! The stuff about having people over and the gardeners or ur pool people, so true! Incidents can happen

Black Filas are not standard, but is nice to see a guy who loves his puppy.
I thought Black was accepted
Black is in standard... Research harder.
CAFIB true Fila’s
in Cafib black is not accepted
He is clearly a neo mix. Black,is not only not accepted. But the dog can not pace, and has incorrect skin.
A friend of mine has a couple Filas. I was really amazed how athletic they are especially since they are so huge
Your Fila Brasileiro is beautiful and you really know him, his personality, his drive, etc. However, the Fila Brasileiro does not descend from the Mastiff. Extensive research here in Brazil has shown they descend from the "Alanos", Spanish and Portuguese dogs that were brought to South America by the settlers. They were first used to 'hunt" fugitive slaves and later to work on the farms and ranches, dealing with the cattle, protecting them from the jaguars. That's the origin of the Fila. Extremely loyal to their owners and family, excellent property guardians, and known for their hate towards strangers. As the presenter very well warned: 'Filas are not for the inexperienced... '
Never heard of this dog, it looks like a black Mastiff. Super cool.
Another fantastic interview and video Zeke. Your channel is the best dog related channel I've come across on TH-cam. Keep up the great work!
I'm part Portuguese if I had the land I would love to have one. I was always on the fence about them, from the dogs I had been around years ago. Impressive dogs. I worked with dogs for over 20 yrs and this is one of the very few breeds that intimidates me. And if they are not your dog, there is no way you will ever impress them to respond to you. I did know one that bonded to me a little, but I would never feel comfortable alone with him.

Black filas are accepted by show dog organizations. Go to a farm in Brazil and try to show them a black Fila. You will get shot.
Thanks for this realistic and practical discussion. I get so upset with owners who don’t respect the inherent qualities they were bred for. Doesn’t mean you can’t totally love them and acknowledge how awesome your dog is, but we’d all be a lot safer (including the dogs themselves) if their owners were also aware of and training for the risks their dogs pose

For some.. It's wierd...
yes very, but the dose makes the poison
bullycrew it's a 170 pound dog. he would have to be giving him a pound or more to posion him
They are put it varies dog to dog for some reason. I've heard of a Chihuahua that lived at a vineyard and ate grapes daily but never got sick and a Mastiff that grabbed up one grape before his owner could get to it and was at the emergency vet in 30 minutes and dead 2 hours later.
Yeah he said grapes too. They do say grapes are toxic, but wolves in East Europe raid vineyards sometimes. So who knows. He said tangerines too and citrus is supposed to be hard on them.

In Brazil, you'll not see a black Fila that often
But in general, it is an awsome breed if you want a guard, cow herding or hunting dog. Just be sure to socialize it. Filas have a quality called ojeriza (a portuguese word that means extreme aversion) towards strangers. They are not the friendly dog nextdoor you can put a jacket on and take to see children in cancer hospitals. Socialize them, but be careful. At home, things are even more complicated. They will jump and try to kill people, specially if they are not with the owner. The fmailiy are the only ones safe (and very safe) around it. That's why so many countries ban the Fila.
Fearsome dog. I would be afraid to own a fila. If I don't succeed training and socialising it right, people around me would be in great danger.

To make a long story short, one day his grandpa took him to visit his friend in the forest but before going there he bought fresh fish (herrings I believe) salt, potatoes, red wine kitchen oil, charcoal) and food for chicken. When approaching the cabin in the woods his grandpa made some strange sounds and then started to offload the groceries and then went to see/feed the chicken he raised there. A short time after getting into the cabin, somebody knocked on the door and his grandpa went outside in order to talk to the person privatelly. A short time later his grandpa reenterred the room and asked his grandson to come and see his friend, an almost 9 ft tall Bigfoot. He was a little surprised but so was BF, but once the grandpa was present the boy didn´t feel insecure. The BF left for shortly after in order to bring his family and his grandpa started pulling the barbecue outside the cabin and put the charcoal on fire. While the fish was frying they lit a fire in order to heat the oilpan in which they pretented to make french fries, etc. Soon the BF was back and he brought with him his wife and 2 F Jrs a boy and a girl. During the party, where the BF eagerly ate the salty meal the boy relaxed a little and felt simpathy for the BF Jrs. Many years later, his grandpa had already passed he went to the cabin with a BRAZILIAN MASTIFF puppy which he gifted to the BFs. He remarks that one/two years later, when back to the cabin the huge BF was eager to show him how he had trained the dog. Many years later again he went back to the cabin and noticed that the bushes had somehow overgrown the little house but the chicken still where around and apparently got even more numerous. The now outgrown BF boy came out of the cabin saluted him but made signs that they had to leave. While leading him out of the woods he frequently made loud sounds with his voice as if to chase somebody away. He then new that the times had changed and that it was no more safe to walk into the forest all by himself. (cannot say if it´s true or not but it´s a nice story, imo). THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO, btw
Yes, that was a nice story. Very interesting and a little scary at the end! Thanks for sharing.
Not the greatest example of a fila but at least we got a video for one now
why not?
Breeders say black filas aren't purebred.
Ez eK5 lol...😂😂😂 that's a good 1 and true
There is no dog like a fila. The best you ever can have.
This dude makes me want one.
About the question of the colors accept for Filas Brasileiros, the CABIF don't recognizes the black color but the CBKC recognizes. I in person never see a black Fila.
But Duke is a great dog. I have the luck of owner a mixed of fila brasileiro and irish setter. The apperance was very similar to Duke. Was good to remember my childhood's dog while watch the video
been waiting for this one!
People talk about protection dogs and have guys in bite suits training them but there are very few PROVEN natural born man-stoppers left in the world. Typically because the dogs that had the backbone and drive to take down a grown man have been killed. Ive seen "protection" breeds such as a Cane Corso growl and bark but ultimately avoid direct engagement with an intruder. I am fortunate enough to own a natural born (no training) man-stopper. It was discovered in an unfortunate manner but fortunately the man will recover fully and got away with only 6 stitches and some deep puncture wounds on his side from an attack lasting less than 5 seconds. The court costs and hospital bills are very expensive but because we went to bat for him and met all the requirements ( microchip, $100,000 in liability insurance, muzzle, electric perimeter, 6 ft fence, vicious dog registration, warnings posted on all property entrances) that the court gave us we were able to keep him with us and save him from euthanization. He sleeps in bed with my wife and I every night and our teenage daughters snuggle and play with him. He is a hybrid (62.5% Boerboel, 12.5% dogo argentino, 12.5% turkish kangal, and 12.5% great dane) and currently weighs in around 145 pounds and around 30 inches at the shoulder. Owning a dog like this requires a ton of love, patience, a respect for what he is capable of, and the knowledge that if you allow him to think he is in charge, you've already lost the battle.
Great breed for their purpose. Back in the day I was tempted to get one. I had 3 Neos that all passed away. My lifestyle now being married with 3 kids doesnt present the right environment for a Fila Unfortunately. My house is like grand central station with neiborhood kids all the time. Not a good environment for a Fila...not to mention they are a restricted breed in my development. Still fascinating breed....they dont drool as much as a Neo. lol
Very nice video. I have had numerous FILAS over the past 25 years. They are the best property and family guards in my opinion. They are a big responsibility as as a temperament correct FILA will attack any stranger who enters the property. A good wrought iron or tall brick fence is a necessity. One thing that Gustar did not mention is that there can only be one female dog if you have a FILA. They are much like wolves in there hierarchy. Our female was a Rare Breed Champion and our male was a Rare Breed and National Champion. The FILA is the only dog that the show judges are not allowed to touch. Thank you for your great video!!!
Henry Bolin - What?! "there can only be one female dog if you have a FILA." What do you mean? I've had as many as 10 Fila bitches all together with no problems. We used to feed deer to our Fila pack by placing the carcass in the yard and letting the dogs out to eat together. More alpha dogs ate first, but everyone got their fill and there were no fights. ??
presa and filas love um owned two presa canarios and one of my buddies had a fila ....not really pets we just trained them in personal protection... theirs a difference between working dogs and family pets
I've raised the breed. Your advise is spot on. My Fila's always knew who alpha was. Very gentle with my children. I called them predictable.they would never bite me or my children. They would bite anyone else. They are a tremendous liability if not handled properly. Still love the breed.
