(304) It used to be VERY fashionable to have prawn cocktail as a starter (I'm 68). You're right, Rik; there are lots of "nobody eats that anymore" kind of dishes that deserve a revival. Old is gold, baby!!! 😉
I remember being taken to a place in 1978 for Prawn cocktail ,chicken in a basket & Black forest gateaux to finish ...£4:95 for 3 courses ...how times have changed 😂😂... Nice one Rik ..brought back some happy memories...
I will be making this.I have vintage shrimp cocktail dishes that I got from a garage sale many years ago. MY partner and I often share a shrimp cocktail when we go to our nearby inn and they have that delicious sauce with fresh spinach in it.The shrimp are cooked lightly in a court bullion and they are large, very delicious.
Our local restaurant still does prawn cocktail which I love. but at home I just like mine simple. I toss prawns in mayo with a dash of lemon and cayenne pepper or paprika on a bed of crispy salad. I also use it in a sandwich or top a jacket potatoe. Thank you Rick for doing this .
Mmmmmm , I used to always have this as my starter back in the late 70's and 80's when dining out anywhere . I absolutely loved it . I have tried to make the sauce for myself but never could get it right , so I'm itching to try this sauce recipe , thank you very much .
This looks fabulous Rik. Coming from a large Irish family this was only served when relatives from England and we loved it, also Melon was sometimes served instead. This is one of my great nieces favourite foods so definitely going to make for her using your recipe. We serve it with buttered wheaten bread and it is delicious. 😋
A walk down memory lane: flashback to the 50s & 60s Home Cocktail Party and Dinner menu with Prawn Cocktail as an Appetizer. That was accompanied with a jellied Tomato Aspic or Lime Cottage Cheese Jello and a Seven Layer Casserole or Steak with Baked Potato and Pineapple Upside Down Cake for dessert. Back in the day when hostesses wore fancy georgette aprons with wide crinoline dresses, rhinestone jewelry and cats-eye glasses. And of course ashtrays all over the house that you regularly had to empty while you and your guests were chain-smoking in the house while drinking and eating listening to music being played on LP records. Cocktails were Martinis, Manhattans, Rusty Nails, Black Russians or Scotch on the Rocks. Then everyone drove home drunk. A by-gone era.
I know lots of people who still love a prawn cocktail. I don’t like prawns but I make them for others. Sometimes I put some finely chopped apple in with the salad and then serve them with delicious rustic brown bread and homemade butter. xx
I had an aunt who served this as an appetizer at Thanksgiving back in the 70s and I always loved it. Some of my siblings didn't care for it so I always got extra portions. I made it a few weeks ago out of nostalgia but added a little horseradish to the sauce.
I absolutely love Prawn Cocktails and still indulge in them once in a while. They will never go out of fashion with me. You know you could also use both the smoked paprika powder and the chili/cayenne powder together and turn it into a 'hot' paprika powder. There are even ready made tins of the stuff from a Spanish brand. I highly recommend them, because it's quality powder.
I adore prawn cocktail! I think avo actually goes lovely with the Marie-rose sauce, but hey that’s always how I serve it. I love your version of the sauce with the addition of brandy. 🥃 yummmmmm Thank you Ric!
I see a lot of people saying how different the American sauce is,well until COVID forced me to retire as the restaurant I was working in decided to close permanently and I was 75 at the time,I knew no one was going to hire me again. It was a top rated seafood restaurant,we did half a pound of warm shrimp with cocktail sauce,I would watch one of the shuckers(oyster chefs) make it,it was cans of tomato sauce, chili sauce( tomato sauce with onions ,garlic, spices a little corn syrup, but not very sweet) house made horseradish, tabasco sauce, gin, and Worcestershire sauce,so delicious it was served with the oysters along side the mignonette sauce.Funny you said you didn’t have avocado as a kid,I did, though we called them avocado pears,my Gran, used to cut in half, take out the pit,and fill the cavity with Worcestershire sauce then eat with a spoon.I still do that,it’s a great combo, when making avocado toast I mash it with the sauce, then sprinkle with the now very popular “Everything but the Bagel “ seasoning, really good😊
Oh yes! It's one of my favorite starters. Superb 👌 . Thank you, Rik. I'm making this again. Been ages since I had this. Brilliant as always. Thanks, man. 👍
Prawn cocktail has never gone outta fashion in my gaff. I also do it with mussels. This is a different take - gonna try it. Serve it large potion with fresh, warm ciabatta bread for a main course. With bubbly. Then fresh coffee and chocolates.
I've never seen this, thanks for sharing. We always have the US version-ketchup, loads of horseradish, Worcestershire sauce is the base then perhaps lemon and pepper if you choose. We're of Eastern European extraction so it was really mainly an excuse to have horseradish. OK, we don't need an excuse-there's always a jar or root in the fridge. Yours looks quite elegant. Your sauce is lovely, halfway to a Russian or Thousand Island dressing. I'll be making it soon.
I still love shrimp cocktail, American style with a ketchup based sauce. I like the sauce to have some horseradish. In fact it's really a very low calorie delicious treat. Last summer I bought a large platter of shrimp with cocktail sauce in Lidl and ate the whole thing in one day.
Love prawn cocktail for a starter with avacado Rik. Also prawn and Avacado salad is great as well with celary. Yum yum. Cheers, Debra from Downunder xxx
I love a prawn cocktail. I have it two or three times a year. Your version looks delicious. Today I got the ingredients for your spam recipe and tomorrow I will be making it. Thanks for all your hard work in researching and making all these delicious recipes.

Great video. Remember going to Roker Hotel in Sunderland, with my mum and dad in the early 70s, and always ordered a prawn cocktail, cremated steak and glass and banana i butterscotch sauce. Yummy!!
@@jeanworriedaboutdemocracy5413 Maybe we have a simpler recipe for the cocktail sauce in the States. I make it very simple at home; ketchup, loads of prepared horseradish and a touch of mayo to smooth it out.
Still very popular in India! But here in the US, shrimp cocktail has morphed into boiled shrimp served with Heinz cocktail sauce! I prefer this old fashioned one. Thanks, looks fantastic. Will be great for a summer al fresco meal 😊
Looks so good and refreshing! This is great right now in Arizona! Yesterday, I had a 24hr stomach bug so spam didn't look too good🤣. I love watching you!
It wasn't a night out at a Stakis steak house or Berni Inn without a prawn cocktail starter. It was a flavour trend of the 70s and seems to have endured as an all time favourite. A highlight was discovering how to make the sauce at home and then all dinner parties started with the prawn cocktail. I remember there would be debate over better with salad cream or mayo. 😀
I had a prawn cocktail last Wednesday night! I do make them occasionally. I had some cooked prawns and iceburg lettuce that needed using, so I thought what the heck. Growing up in the 70's, they were an absolute highlight for us on the rare occasion we'd go out for dinner. We'd always get the prawn cocktail, even when there was a huge entrée menu. I absolutely nailed the Marie Rose sauce. I added a bit extra tobasco for a kick. Not hot, just twangy. I'd never seen it with cucumber, I really like the sound of that and will try that next time. Same with the tomatoes.
Looks and surely tastes amazing Rik! Unfortunately i am allergic to prawns, so can only look at this lovely prawn cocktail 🥲. Thanks for all your appetizing recipes!

Fantastic Rik. I miss those days. This was considered a "high end" starter then. Today's lot got no idea. And I'm from down under so yes, tomato sauce it is.👍
In Australia I never had Prawn Cocktail with Cucumber, just Lettuce, whole Prawns and 1000 Island Dressing on top to which I added lemon juice and few drops of tabasco or chili. Chilled Yumm! But I will be trying it with the cubed chilled Cucumber and the chopped up prawns mixed in with the cocktail sauce for sure. Thanks gor the recipe Rik. ❤
Out of date or not, I make prawn cocktail a lot. I don't use tomato ketchup for prefer sun dried tomato paste, then I add a dash of Worcester sauce, lemon juice and parpika, shredded iceberg salad; That's it, nothing else, save the prawns of course. This recipe looks good though, might try it.
Oooo that sauce sounds so much better than U.S. shrimp cocktail sauce which always includes horseradish sauce. Such a simple, quick recipe! Thank you, Chef! After reading the history of Lea & Perrins I'm so wondering how different England's Worcestershire sauce tastes compared to ours. When it came to America for some reason they really loaded it up with sugar and salt (like 3x as much) and white vinegar instead of malt. No one knows why. Shirley in NH
@@BackyardChef Yeah... made me realize I really need to pay attention to what country I'm getting recipes from... and definitely taste as I go. lol Shirley in NH

My husbands all time favourite starter if it’s ever on the menu he’s in heaven thank you Rik I do make it at home although he would never believe me when I told him they make the sauce with mayo and ketchup lol 🍤Amanda xx
A different take than I grew up with, we liked celery and horseradish cocktail sauce. But this is a winner 👍 A good appetizer, before I dig in to my Spam sandwich!
Avocado in prawn cocktail?! As peculiar in the 60s as garlic bread! My Grandmother made prawn cocktail as a Christmas starter, I loved it. You can buy a supermarket offering but it is sh**te to put it mildly, so at last a proper recipe. I’m reminded of the seafood man used to go round the pubs selling cockles and the like (in a waxed bag with vinegar) - delicious. Now where’s the brown bread and butter…?
Hi Rik I'd forgo the prawn cocktail because I have a seafood/shellfish allergy, you can have mine if you like lol, then I'll have the steak with homemade chips followed by the Black Forest Gateaux which by the way I definitely will not be giving away 😂, thanks my friend 👍
Oh memories of the good old Berni Inn- I always had prawn cocktail with brown bread and an Irish coffee without the whiskey in. Those truly were the days!!
We had it except with shrimp. That and a fondue of some sort. These with a Saturdaynight game of pinochle or euchre plus a stack of 45s on the turntable along with choices of beverages.
I'm really surprised you didn't cook the prawns in salted water. Maybe I missed it. Your sauce is very similar to what I do but I don't add brandy but would add a half teaspoon of dry mustard and a teaspoon of curry powder. Thanks Ric.

A different take than I grew up with, we liked celery and horseradish cocktail sauce. But this is a winner 👍
A good appetizer, before I dig in to my Spam sandwich!
Thank you. Best, Rik
My very favourite. Yummy thanks Rick.🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🤩

Thanks for sharing! Thank you. Best, Rik
Ha ha ha- a done deal! Might save me putting on another kilo. Thank you. Best, Rik
Where's your triangle of brown bread and butter Rik? 😂 Used to always order this when we went for a posh steak in Berni Inn. Love your videos.
Wow that an oldy! Thank you. Best, Rik
Oh memories of the good old Berni Inn- I always had prawn cocktail with brown bread and an Irish coffee without the whiskey in. Those truly were the days!!
Oh, the Irish coffee, they really were good times, so many happy memories. ❤
Used to love prawn cocktail in the late 70s in Pizza Hut in Australia
Thank you. Best, Rik
We had it except with shrimp. That and a fondue of some sort. These with a Saturdaynight game of pinochle or euchre plus a stack of 45s on the turntable along with choices of beverages.
Thank you. Best, Rik
I'm really surprised you didn't cook the prawns in salted water. Maybe I missed it. Your sauce is very similar to what I do but I don't add brandy but would add a half teaspoon of dry mustard and a teaspoon of curry powder. Thanks Ric.

Love vintage food. Could you do steak Diane and tornados rossini sometime. Great video, thank you Rik.

Still very popular on cruise ships.
