      Agreed. And you can also speak frankly to a male teacher about this issue: he's an adult, he probably has a mum/sister/cousin/friend/girlfriend/etc, so he knows that girls get period. Most important: it's NOT a scandalous thing, it's common thing :) I played volleyball, we do need to wear a uniform with very short and tight pants only during matches. I've ALWAYS had male coaches and they were so so sweet and understanding with us girls!

    NEVER EVER WEAR TAMPONS WHEN YOU'RE NOT MENSTRUATING! Feel that dry feeling taking a tampon out that isn't fully saturated? The reason it is uncomfortable is because it is ripping micro cuts into your vaginal canal, which is the way that the staf bacteria gets into the blood stream causing TSS which can be fatal. Use a menstrual cup if you need internal protection when you're not menstruating just yet.

    I just want to say some women get pains with their period that over the counter painkillers cannot touch. Go to a doctor of you get these. Go to another one if they won't listen to you. Endometriosis affects about 1/10 women. It can be very debilitating and the sooner it is treated the better.

I was so excited that my periods would be less debilitating. much to my dismay nothing changed, not even a little. so i paid a lot of money for basically nothing and now I have four ugly scars on my abdomen... for nothing. just saying, sometimes you're just screwed.

      AssaultedPeanutt hello! try natural medicine! there are many things that are very helpful, first change to a menstrual cup to avoid all the chemicals such as chlorine bleach and glyphosate that are in tampons, drink lots of filtered not bottled water during your period, avoid salt ands irritants, and take maca root superfood in powder form in smoothies or something similar this super food will help you regulate your hormones and deal with many of the symptoms, is an adaptogen meaning it will work worth your own body. I wish you the best! and never give up, the solutions are there they are just not the Big Pharma agenda ones.

    • @lilmissmonsterrr
      @lilmissmonsterrr 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Aletia Gonzalez thanks for taking the time to type that advice, I'll definitely try what you mentioned. I have been highly considering the menstrual cup because i've been suspecting that my body is more sensitive/symptomatic to chemicals than the average person and because it's less wasteful than tampons and such. so I'll try that if you think it'll help my pain situation. I'm a lot more holistic than I was when that surgery took place, so I do feel that my body must be lacking something that needs to be supplemented. I only drink filtered or bottled water, and I'm sort of a pescatarian, minus some fish types, and this diet works best with my body. but anyways, thanks for the advice!

    I love your frank discussion. I think that as women we should get more comfortable talking about our periods. You are so right, I felt so ashamed when I got my period for the first time, but there is no reason for that. It's just part of life.
    I have never done ballet (but absolutely love your channel!) but about a year ago I started using a menstrual cup (I use the Diva Cup brand) and it has absolutely changed they way I feel about my period. I go to the gym every day and the cup made it so much better! No leaks, no smell, much more comfortable. I wonder if any dancers have had a similar experience.

    I am a ballet teacher and after reading the comments I want to offer some wisdom. First, tampons are NOT scary. I promise. For a dancer, they're a lifesaver especially if you're really serious about dancing. If you want to dance, please learn to use them. Also, as a dancer you need to start wearing them to class at least a few days before you are supposed to start. Find a brand that doesn't leak for you and you shouldn't ever have to wear anything in addition to it unless it would make you feel better. Next, understand that periods are completely normal. I have had students start theirs during class before and I have had students noticeably wear a pad with their leotard. If an accident happens you're not the first nor the last and it's nothing to be embarrassed about. Main thing is, don't be afraid! It's not a big deal and it's not scary no matter what happens!

    • @TieDyedSquishy
      @TieDyedSquishy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +80

      Kasey Darlene using tampons when you're not on your period is a bad idea. It increases the instances of small scratches you get on your vaginal walls from tampons that leave you open to TSS. Please don't recommend that girls wear tampons incorrectly. A little research on tampons and TSS will clear that up.
      Cups can be used quite safely while not on your period as long as you use lubricant. Cups don't scratch the vaginal walls like tampons do so they have a much much lower risk of TSS.

    • @KaseyDarlene
      @KaseyDarlene 8 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Ok, thank you for the information. I will definitely look into it. For someone who is in a leotard and tights six days per week pads are just not an option.

      Damn you know that this is super unhealthy and also dangerous to wear a Tampon when you're not in your period. It promotes all sorts of infections. You can wear a menstruation cup while you are on your period otherwise just don't use anything in your normal cylce. Do you think it's helpful if a couple of your girls are fighting a serious infection, draggin themselves to class and still perform flawless? Not to forget the toxic shock syndrome which can actually kill you.

  • @elliemccarthy5672
    @elliemccarthy5672 8 ปีที่แล้ว +103

    There are thin panty liners that are invisible under leggings, leotards, tights, etc. That way if you start your period, you won't leak for a while. Much safer than tampons when you are not on your period (taking out dry tampons can cause micro tears in the vaginal wall, which can cause infection)

      @sonjahavukainen1859 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Lara Korrat That's not true, at least the tampons being safer -part. With the tampon, the possible bacteria or whatever you think is dangerous in the blood is all the time touching your vagina (and menstrual blood isn't dangerous - it might grow some bacteria over time but it takes more than 12 hours if the blood sits in the cup). With cup, it isn't and even if you are upside down and the blood would get out of the cup to the top part of your vagina, it would just go back to the cup once you turn back. It doesn't go back to the uterus.

    Don’t put in a tampon if you don’t have your period. It sounds scary at first, but it’s so worth it to learn how to use a menstrual cup. They are safe to wear if you think you might get your period, but haven’t started yet. Tampons harbor all kinds of bacteria and can lead to infections. Menstrual cups are intimidating at first, but once you get used to it (doesn’t take too long) then you will wonder why you ever wore anything else.

    I randomly started my period in the middle of class, light gray cotton leotard, pink tights, light skirt. It was a VERY noticable stain. Right before rond de jambes and développes. And it was open house... my boyfriend was watching class that day. EVERYTHING THAT COULD GO WRONG
    I genuinely wish I was kidding but I had to run over to my bag in from across the class right before the combination and take off my skirt and put on my warm up shorts and my teacher stopped the class to ask wtf I was doing. I never get embarrassed about periods but I was mortified 😂😂 I was like 19 at the time
    So ladies...top that story

      Never, make sure that the sticky surface has the same with of the fabric of your underwear. If you are a (small) teenage choose those brand that target young adults as the pads are smaller in width but never the less still absorb enough so they will fit you better, so they will not show as the sticky pads is sticking to your legs. You can also choose those pads with wings on the side so they will stay in place better. I hope this helps.
      Plus, if you have breaks in between classes you do not need a massive pad in length, those are if you are laying down. Just use one that will be enough for the time being that you cannot go to the toilet.

      Part of the danger is in placing and removing, though, because you can easily cause tiny tears in the skin when it's too dry - meaning that you're completely open to infections. That would happen even if you only had it in five seconds.

    One thing I would like to point out, as a medical student, is that wearing a tampon outside the period may be harmful, because the tampon dries all the fluid that is inside your lady parts, so that may damage the bacterial flora that we naturally have. As these bacteria are benign, keeping them out leaves more space for harmful bacteria to grow and cause an infection. A safer alternative to keep peace of mind would be to wear pads during non-period days. If it's not possible to wear pads, try menstrual cups

    This is a great video, and I love most of the tips. However, I DO NOT agree with using a tampon when you aren't on your period. If you are concerned, you can use a menstrual cup, even if you're not on your period. That's because menstrual cups are not absorbent. However, using a tampon in that way can be dangerous and painful. (I generally think that menstrual cups are better than tampons. A lot of women say that cups are easier to use, once you get past the learning curve.)

    Menstrual cup + menstrual panties!!! The unbeatable combo!! There is no way you will have a leak with them and it doesn’t show under your costumes. Now, one very important thing: having your periods is the most normal thing in the world and we really need to stop worrying about people finding out. It’s ok if they find out. Of course we don’t want it to leak, but I used to hide my padding when I was going to the bathroom and be really concerned about someone finding them in my bag. It’s really not worth it! Everybody knows women have periods and there is nothing wrong or gross about it. Quite the opposite, it means we are healthy.

    1st I started ballet when I was 12 I already had my period during class I just dealt with it but my first dress rehearsal I bled all over my white gold costume luckily no one noticed and I got it dry cleaned before the show and it was fine.
    2 it was the next year and I got my period during a dance Christmas party we all went into the studio and took turns showing our the different dances during the dance I bleed all over my white tights and red body suit everyone saw the whole studio about 50 dancers from about ages 4 to 17/18 I swear I almost died I didn’t have anything at the studio so I called my mom and she came and picked me up about an hour early.

If u need to take some Advil, motrin and etc, my suggestion would be to keep something like midol handy to take during performing rather than anti inflammatories if at all possible. Although they are great for cramps, they do thin ur blood and u tend to bleed more when u are active.

I would still use a tampon as back up if your heavy that day but it is easier to move around in and it covers you. Also you don't feel it when you move around.

    I personally dislike tampons because they dry me all within and feel some tearing when taking them out. Pads are too big and always turn and I would get my underwear stained. The best thing I discovered is the menstrual cup made of soft surgical grade silicon, is very safe and wonderful. It doesn't smell, I only empty it every 12 hours, once in the morning and once at night before bed. I don't feel it at all and is completely amazing. I discovered it because I read that tampons and pads are bleached with chlorine and are made of GMO cotton which is heavily sprayed with glyphosate a very toxic chemical associated with cancers. After I started using the cup all my cramps went away. I used to be the kind of person that would have to stay in bed, and not anymore. Now I collect them, have many different brands from different countries and colors. My favorite is made in Finland and is called Lunette.

    Changing tampons often can be painful. O.B. makes a tampon, called SilkTouch, that has a soft silky layer on the outside that makes it slide in/out better, resulting in less pain. It does not cause it to move around or start to come out like a full tampon. No matter how hard I danced. Always use the lowest level of absorbency you are comfortable with, for the least amount of time possible (change it at most every 8 hours), to lower your risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome. Also a panty liner, U by Kotex called Barely There Liner, Light Absorbency, is the most sticky of every kind currently made. I tested all of them because I belly dance and if they aren't sticky enough, it just wrinkles up when you shimmy. Stretch whatever layer you put a liner on to just about halfway between stretched out completely and touching your body. Then put the liner on and relax because no one can see it on the outside. It "becomes" part of your clothes so it doesn't show. Also pack some baby wipes for a quick tidy up if you do start. I like Kirkland Signature unscented from Costco. I didn't smell like a baby and you can put together a little Period Kit (in a none see through bag with a zipper, toss babywipes in a baggy of baby wipes, several tampons of various absorbency - replace regularly so they stay sanitary, pads for after class or a show, panty liners, backup panties, extra leotard/tights, your pain meds of choice, an empty baggy for dirty/leaked on clothes, a tiny roll of TP or tissues.) Makeup bag is a great disguise for it. Thank you for making this video.

    If you’re ever really worried about leaking, look into getting a menstrual cup! They take a little getting used to for putting them in, but I’ve been using a divacup for about a year and a half and I have not leaked once! You can keep them in up to 12 hours, and they’re so much cheaper than buying tons of tampons, and they can last anywhere between one and five years per cup.

  • @Altoclarinets

    (speaking as a gymnast not a ballet dancer but the attire and movements are similar so) couple more tips:
    1. As you get a little older and "settle in" to your cycle, you will probably discover that heavy physical activity, like a class or performance, makes you bleed a little harder than when you're just sitting around. Her suggestion to change right before you head in really starts to become important at this point. (TMI: At any point in your life, taking care to wipe very thoroughly after you put your tampon in will help ensure there's no random blood/clots from the process of changing hanging around to stain stuff even if you don't actually leak.)
    2. In dance and gymnastics, because your body fat content stays pretty low, it's normal to have a period that is on the shorter, lighter side. If you have problems with periods that are so heavy you can't get through class/performance without bleeding through, last more than a week, or feel so painful it interferes with your ability to function normally, you should see the doctor to rule out things like endometriosis, fibroids, and PCOS. These conditions can usually be managed to some degree so your period will be easier to deal with, and some of them can be dangerous to your health on top of being a nuisance, so it's good to catch them as early on in life as possible! (Same goes later on if you have a sudden, drastic, unexplained change in the frequency, heaviness, or painfulness of your periods well after you've hit a regular "rhythm" - see a doctor!)
    3. Make sure you're using the right absorbency, as well as a tampon that fits you well. If you're bleeding all the way through, leaking before class ends, and finding your tampon completely soaked, it's probably time to consider something heavier, at least for that day of your cycle. (Lots of brands make multiple absorbency packs so you can choose what's right for your flow on a given day.) If blood is getting around the tampon - that is, you're finding stains in your tights/underwear but pulling out a mostly clean, white tampon when you go to change, that means your fit is probably bad. Double check that you are following the directions for application correctly so the tampon sits in the right spot, and if that doesn't change anything, try a different brand or the next size up. The Tampax Pearl and Playtex Sport lines in particular have shapes that are more anatomical and help to close up those gaps, but because of how they expand they can be painful to take out of a younger body - use with care.
    4. Pads as backup are worth considering. You can get some of the no-show underwear she recommends and wear shorts/skirt/leggings to hide any bulk showing through the leotard. It's no longer 1985 and there are some very thin, flexible, nearly invisible options available that still have enough absorbency for even the heaviest flows to get through a class or performance with no fear. I would recommend something with wings as that will help keep the pad from being twisted off your underwear and dislodged by the motion of your dancing.
    - 4a. (warning: everything after this point is super extremely TMI so tap out here if you gotta) if you do wear a pad, even just as backup, I would recommend seating it once you've got your clothes back on - take the edge of your hand and sort of jam it up between your legs, from the front all the way as far as it goes up your butt crack. (Look, I warned you it was TMI.) This makes sure that there's no gap between your body and the pad that the blood can leak out through, it's all gotta get absorbed (and bonus, if you have problems with leaks running down your butt crack while you're lying down/sleeping this will help with that as well).

    I am going to suggest menstrual cups. You can wear them even if you are not on your period yet (like Kathryn suggested for performances) but without the risk of TSS. They hold more than tampons and are less likely to leak and you can wear them for up to 12 hours without risk of infection (which is great when you have very busy days). Also, at least for me, they are much more comfortable than tampons. A plus is that they are better for the environment too, since you are not producing waste. (Feel free to ask questions)

    Thank you for this wonderful video...which will no doubt be helpful for your younger viewers. As we get older I think the embarrassment tends to fade and we learn to just deal with it, but at 14-15-16-17 it can be a little cringey!
    A couple things- I definitely would urge people to not be shy even in talking to male teachers about this (as needed). Though there may be exceptions, they should be compassionate/professional as they are working with mostly women all the time. :)
    Also-I think wearing a small tampon if you're expecting your period/just finished it and have a big performance/can't take a bathroom break is not a bad idea, but if you're in the middle of your cycle I think it would not be optimal for health reasons. A good thing to do is to track your cycle and if you're regular, you'll know pretty well when to expect it! :)

    hey great vid, it so encouraging to hear you speak about this as most people won't talk about periods no matter what activity/art/sport you are doing. Thou i must admit sometimes they can be really painful and make moving really difficult but in those cases particularly if its always like that its best to visit your doctor at least this is what my mother taught. Also a good idea is to keep track how they make you feel so you can better equip yourself (mentally and emotionally) and if any is wrong, you can use your track record to help figure it out.

    They make period underwear that look like seamless, normal underwear but are not only absorbent but also odorless, no different than wearing a washable panty liner, except it doesn’t show at all.

    How do you put a tampon in when you don't have your period? Doesn't it hurt especially to take it out? Xx

      Leah Rose if you are super regular, and want to be prepared and use a tampon, it helps to use a little Vaseline or KY lubricant on the applicator to ease insertion. if you don't feel comfortable using a tampon "dry" ,as in before your period starts, check out a menstrual cup.
      Also, I would also suggest keeping backup undies, tights, and leos just in case, along with a stain stick. When I was in middle school, I would stash an extra pair of undies in a zip lock baggie in my purse (that little zipper pocket or keep them in the pouch with your monthly supplies), because I couldn't always count on being regular for about the first year.

      Leah Rose using tampons dry causes small scratches on your vaginal walls and is a direct contributor to TSS. Please don't do it. Cups can be used quite safely while you're not on your flow if you use lubricant (KY).

      While I'm interested in trying the cup, I do want to chip in with objectivity TSS is so rare and half the cases of TSS have nothing to do with tampons. I mean really. TSS is a bacterial infection, while tampons can cause it if left too long, it's more about the bacteria. There are plenty of ways to get TSS without ever having won a tampon in your life. Just about anything you put in your vagina can cause TSS. Menstrual cups too...

    I will never understand how folks can be embarrassed about periods or natural processes our bodies go through as humans. It's not a TMI subject, it's a this is LIFE subject.
    You're beautiful for covering this topic.

    We have to wear uniformed colors per level. So, I have to wear a bright blue leotard for my level which is annoying for that time of month. Three more years until I get to wear black...

    Non dancer here, but female who used to deal with very heavy periods before I had a hysterectomy almost 6 years ago. I can highly recommend trying a menstrual cup! It’s more gentle than a tampon as it doesn’t affect the balance of your vagina as much, and it has a much lower risk of infection or irritation, and you can use the same size regardless of how much or little you bleed without getting discomfort from it, all while a tampon can feel like it’s drying you out in there if you wear one while not on period or you’re wearing a tampon that is larger than your period calls for that moment. As for cramps, try a shot of pickle juice daily! It may not even be a bad idea in general considering how much a dancer is sweating throughout the day and you need to replenish those electrolytes to feel good, pickle juice can help both with electrolyte balance and it can ease cramps both from periods or soreness from exercise.

    Great video, glad you talked about this! My tip for women who tend to bleed through is to always bring a change of clothes and mini bottle of hair conditioner with you...paired with cold water it removes period blood really efficiently.

    Dear Katie, due to financial and location issues, I wasn't able to start taking ballet classes until a little over a year ago at the age of sixteen. Nothing in the world makes me happier, and I want to do it professionally one day: it doesn't even have to be in a big company. Do you think that it's too late for me?
