    I wire all my guitars with Freeway switches -- either 10-way or 6-way, and always configure them to offer out-of-phase, as well as series-parallel. Pickups in series and out-of-phase is a combination I use fairly frequently.

      @@stephanematis An absolute bear to install (at least for my rudimentary soldering skills), but completely worth the trouble. I used to achieve these combinations with unwieldy combinations of push-pull pots, toggle switches, etc. These make for a much more usable solution. My other 'secret sauce' is sticking my own custom 'varitone' type notch filters on everything.

    • @stephanematis

      @@Apodicticus My favorite setup is in a Telecaster with tapped coils, very hot set that acts normal until I drag sideways. Love the flexibility. I wear my good glasses when soldering, otherwise ... oof. But at least the tabs are nice a clear and easy to see. I've not done varitone, but having played a friends' modified Gretsch, having different resistor for cut-off felt like an excellent way to modify the tone without a lot of guesswork. He plays jazz and loves it.
      That said, the last thing I want is option paralysis, especially since my playing keeps devolving due to other priorities. Still, I think it feels amazing to use ones mind to "build a better mouse trap", keeping the creative and technical sides in ballance.

    Gary Moore modified his guitar to suit his preferences, using different knob covers on the potentiometers so he could feel the difference by touch rather than by sight. He also stated that he didn't care about its appearance; he just wanted to damn well play the guitar and not keep it for a collection. It worked for him, and I think it's absurd to have different knob covers on a regular release. He easily sold that guitar, not caring if he played on any other custom 1959; he could have played an Epiphone, and he'd still be Gary, the greatest guitarist of all time.
    When it comes to out-of-phase, I've never met anyone who likes the middle position on an LP, and many guitarists say it's unusable. But with the out-of-phase, it's a completely different story; it sounds almost like a Strat. Kirk Hammett says so too, and I've confirmed it myself that the guitar sounds really nice in the middle position with the reverse phase.

    Seems to me, all they did was take a burst bucker three and a burst bucker two in the neck and flip the magnet are. Actually, they put a reverse polarity magnet in there so that you could wire it for push pull out of phase, however, the burst buckers that being said are good pick ups overall, but they certainly don’t compare at $299 now that they are for sale to the X for Peter Green rolling man or the whiz so there are now many options out there boutique for Not much more if not the same price as the pick ups that they’re selling in this guitar and if I spent $3000 on this guitar I would put much better pick ups in it without a doubt because these are close but they are definitely not replicated. It’s like you guys said they’re accuracy in reproduction has been historically, not so hot Either way. Thanks again for letting me comment and I enjoyed the playing as always great job guys. Great video.

  • @j_freed
    @j_freed 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I think the neck pickup was reversed (rotated) by some repair tech, maybe not intentionally... yet the bar magnet polarity for that pickup is flipped 'from the factory' as you say.
    (Swapping out different strength and different type Alnico 2, 5 etc bar magnets on PAFs is common on guitar forums.)
    I suppose just flipping any neck or bridge pickup magnet will create the inverse phase cancellation effect compared a normal Gibson 2x PAF setup.
    The neck pickup rotation affects the positioning of the adjustable polepieces so this also puts the emphasis on a different portion of the strings, one has to guess. Someone should AB test what effect this has!

      Yada yada yada. At least show some decency and give credit to where credit is due. Has Hammett not collaborated with Gibson to produce thousands of Greeny replicas, not many people know WTF Greeny guitar or Gary Moore is.

    Couldn't someone just buy the pick ups and put it in any Les Paul?

    So that’s it with the pick up? Just switch it around? I wouldn’t bother. It’s kind of limiting the tone to me.

    I returned mine after two days. I liked the pickups and the top but the guitar just looked unfinished and was extremely heavy. I paid a lot of money for a cheap looking guitar. It went back.

    This guitar has absolutely nothing to do with the Greeny model; it's more of a regular excellent LP Standard 50s with a matte finish, out-of-phase pickups that are also different from those on the Greeny. It's actually an excellent 50s Standard LP with some small modifications; calling it Greeny is actually silly, totally unnecessary.

    Dumb question... Couldn't you just get whatever les paul and flip the pickup yourself?

    • @VN9001
      @VN9001 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's not just flipping the pickup around, it is actually wired out of phase - but yes, you could do that with any regular humbucker if you wanted to.

      I tried that with one of my LPs without rewiring and I did not like the sound that produced. I like the out of phase tone of the Greeny that I bought one.

      Trigger warning > _only for those who can handle an opinion:_
      Gary had a special bond with Greeny (like Buchanan, had a great sound) and he's put all the hard wear on those frets which Kirk is respectfully afraid to pull out and put in new ones... he should just do it I think as sometimes he makes a few more flubs playing this otherwise great guitar than any properly-serviced instrument.
      It's not a pristine '59 Les Paul Burst and has been smashed to bits and glued back together... (fell out of a van on a freeway or something.)
      Kirk even knocked Greeny off the stand not too long ago at home and an old headstock repair came undone, scared the crap from him but it glued very well and she's solid now.

      @@sixslinger9951If I had access to a GREENIE, i WOULD! AND, the point of my statement was exactly what I said, to "properly demo" the guitar. Of which CLEARLY, it wasn't. Was there any aspersions casted on his talent?? Of course not!
      Did he demonstrate the various switch positions, and distorted sounds??
      THANK YOU!!
