    To be honest - Proton for me is the most interesting/exciting synth of 2024.

    I look forward to the day where Behringer releases The Atom, where it’s one of those foldable Eurorack cases with a Proton, a Neutron, and when they eventually release the Electron. Haha

    The hidden shortcuts need to be labeled on the panel!! Why not?
    The best thing about the secret button combos on the neutron, after two years of not remembering them, was buying a third party panel cover with the shortcuts clearly labeled.
    Without this you really need to use the computer software to change these settings via USB or have them written down next to the synth in a way that's quick to understand visually.

      Screen-less describe 90% of synths and too many dont even have "secret panels". I understand remembering sucks but Oversynth will probably make a secret menu overlay and yes, Behringer should've make an overlay with all this useful stuff.

    This a heavy synth. I’m feeling that split point function.

  • @RobertFisher1969
    @RobertFisher1969 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

    One of the reasons I buy hardware with lots of knobs and no presets is so that everything is immediately available, I don't have to remember how to access anything, and just looking at the panel is enough to understand the entire program. I'd rather have limitations than hidden features. And you can say that I could just ignore these hidden settings, but what I have always found in the past is that the hidden settings somehow end up getting changed-likely because I accidentally did the magic sequence that I didn't know would change it-and then it takes me forever to figure out what it is and how to fix it. That said, I'm happy to say that the Proton isn't for me but for people who are OK with this. I just want to be sure you hear that you need to keep products in the line-up that don't have such hidden features if you do want to keep selling things to me.

    • @treennumbers
      @treennumbers 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I actually like that all of the features are there, but I'm also a Nymphes owner and hoo boy with how much people complained about the relatively benign zero-display "menu-diving" on that one, good luck Behringer.

    • @bojangprodoktschns5428
      @bojangprodoktschns5428 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      I also don't get these 'hold the button while hopping on your left foot twice then release while wiggling your right pinky' kind of controls.
      Please give us an actual menu for menu diving, or at least have the decency to give us a dedicated 'shift' button!
      (To be fair, many of the things here seem to be set and forget, but still!)
      Strangely these kind of 'hidden features' are ubiquitous with (digital) Eurorack and guitar pedals, where you are dealing with multiple devices and multiple manufacturers by definition.
      I have seen people ditch entire setups when the mental gymnastics of recalling a different routine for the same function on every device finally got to them.

    • @amindamok
      @amindamok 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think its fair they put these features in a hidden menu. There is going to be a form factor and price target requirement when they plan a new synth. In this case to be the same size as the Neutron to fit into a eurorack case and not cost too much. They could make a larger form factor product to move all those things to buttons and knobs. But then it will cost a lot more and be significantly larger. It's already a lot of functionality right there on the panel as is. The only features that require this kind of set up are the ones that you set while finding your sound. Not ones that you want to be fiddling with while your playing your sound. It would be nice to have all that on the front panel but I cant fault them for how theyve done it here. If you can find the synth that does all this, fits in a eurorack case, has no menus and cost under $500 then please tell us where to find it.

    • @RobertFisher1969
      @RobertFisher1969 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@amindamok That is why I made these points: (1) I'm happy with fewer features if it means fewer hidden features/surprises. (2) I'm not complaining about this product. I just want to warn them away from the trap of making every product like this.

    • @TooSlowTube
      @TooSlowTube 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@RobertFisher1969 Agreed. This video has really made me question whether I want one, after all. I don't use the same synths all the time, so I'd be looking through the manual for this stuff. Bass Station II owners sometime print out a cheat sheet and keep it near it, or tape it on. That's really not for me - I bought one and I really dislike it, at least partly for that reason. A small display and a clicky encoder to change these things, is fine. You just know each time you make a change it's another life off the Flash memory chip too.

    Cool work, its a hard work to get so much synth into a box with not too much knobs and buttons... Congratulations to your interface-programmers. A question:
    When changing the mode for stepped waveform-choose or smooth change between waveforms for VCOs or LFO, will this also be used when changing the waveforms via a modulation source?

  • @craigsurette3438

    A sub oscillator with a variable wave shape feature ?!?!
    A drone mode on the VCOs?!
    This synth just got A LOT more attractive, and that is saying something as it already was high on my list of must have synth tools.
    I am wondering where the S/H went vs the Neutron especially with the slew function, and if there was any way to get that sort of functionality, and if the filters still overdrive well, but otherwise this is a very satisfactory feature set

    • @nathanspark4876
      @nathanspark4876 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      U have to set the LFO wave to smooth and then controlling it from another mod source like lfo2 or an env, this way the lfo shape will change continuously like a sort of S&H, I say 'a sort' because its typical stepping will happen just when square is entering or exiting but in general the result will be similar to the pure S&H but more like the smooth version found on many VSTs, so also here u get a sort of slew... (sorry for my bad English)

    This synth has 68 knobs and direct controls, which sounds impressive, but it quickly turns into a nightmare. You need to memorize a ton of specific shortcuts and push everything in the right order to achieve the effects you want. It’s like trying to solve a complex puzzle every time you use it. You’d think using a DAW would make things easier, but nope-it’s limited to just a few buttons, so you can’t even arrange a virtual control board to simplify the process. You have all this capability, but you need a ton of time to program it properly, and you can’t even recreate your work easily. And with Proton it’s even worse-you can’t just take a photo and retweak the knobs because they have multiple functions! It’s a powerful machine, but operating it feels like more of a burden than a creative process.
