I have the prodigy fine edge and I love it, it's a fantastic knife, I also have two Mora companions, one is the HD carbon, the other is just a normal companion, and I also love them, the way a Mora bites into wood or whatever your cutting on is unlike any knife I own, they are amazing bush knives, can't beat a Mora in the bush,
Just got an Ontario sp5 for $50 and it seems pretty solid so far. Some people don’t like them but it’s made in the USA, around a 10 inch blade and has what I believe to be 1075 carbon steel. Also I think some of the kershaw 10-14 inch camp knives are around $50 as well and a lot of people seem to like them but I haven’t got one yet.
cold steel has a one piece hollow handle survival knife thats called the bushmaster my boy friend bought about 20 years ago he has thrown EVERYTHING at it and it still holds a very good edge
I would have to add to the list the Buck 119 Special ($47 at Walmart with nylon sheath). I actually like the nylon sheath as it is high quality and lightweight, and the 119 is iconic. This is a good topic. I imagine everyone has something to add or detract from the list, but overall I agree with your assessment. Thank you!
I really like many of the knives that Mora offers. I make custom fixed blades yet I keep a Mora in each of my vehicles, tackle boxes, around the house, and at work. Pretty much any place I am a Mora is handy. They are to cheap, correction inexpensive to not have handy. They are especially good to hand out to people that ask to borrow a knife. Most people that don't carry can't be trusted with an expensive blade. A recent find was the Cold Steal (not a typo) Canadian belt knife for $11. I plan to test it out on small game and fish. For under $50 I would recomend two different combos that stay within budget. First a Mora of your choice, Tramontina machete, and a folding saw. Second a Mora and a Fiskars X15 23.5" axe. Pick the combo that best matches your area.
Good choices! I would like to add the Schrade SCHF9 and its little brother the SCHF10. Also, for general purpose, and finer cutting tasks, I would go with the Mora HD Companion, the Mora Light My Fire, and preferably the Mora Bushcraft Black as additional choice for knives that are great for fine work.
I agree 100% with the Gerber Prodigy and the Mora Companion. I utilize both of these blades as backups to my primary BK7 or LMF II (depending on Bushcraft vs Tactical setups I have). I've used them both for many years and neither have failed me...Not once. I appreciate a finely crafted high end blade as much as anyone. I have seen and held some world class works of art over the years. I could never afford one of them. I wish that I could and God bless anyone that can. If you want to get bang for your buck though, you can't go wrong with the Gerber and Mora IMHO. I'm not familiar with the other blades listed here but they seem to be good budget choices as well. Great video sir and thanks for the info.
I have two Mora's. Love them both. I like the looks of the gerber but haven't seen one up close yet. I have several other knives that I consider too big to carry around as a backpacking knife (buck 119) but I use it in camp.
I have a Hoffman Richter Wolf Fixed Blade Knife and love it. It is a lot less than 50 bucks and that along with my mora I am one very happy camper. I also have a Condor Rodon which is less than 50 bucks and it is also another great knife that I love.
Good choices in knives, I’d hope anyone purchasing a knife in this price range knows it will require sharpening and possibly some improvements. The Jeff white bush one knife from self reliance outfitters is the only suv 50 dollar knife I’ve ever purchased that didn’t require work.
Just keeping your local wal-mart, or go to walmart.com. I normally dislike wally world, but in this case, they are the only ones carrying the smooth edge prodigy, no serrations. They must have a contract with Gerber that they are the only ones carrying them. I noticed that our wally world only got maybe 2 of them in per month, so check back often. And they were locked up in the sporting goods section (where they used to have firearms).
Hello Mike, what's up? You've been gone quite a while. If I were to request a video from you I'd like to hear about "Which tasks we shouldn't do with knives?" with the increasing trend of people use knives to baton big logs, digging, prying stuff, use as a spear tip, etc... and what are the better alternatives. Thanks!
China Tosinthiti not to worry I'll be back soon. We had some serious personal stuff going on that has not left much time for videos. I'll do a video in answer to your post. Thanks for checking back.
You are lucky I watch your videos to the end. I was going to ask about the Strongarm, and you threw it in there at the end. I have had it in my Amazon cart for like 6 months. I guess I can pull the trigger now. Thanks for another good vid.
They are good knives, I personally like the handle better on the Gerber Prodigy I showed in the video. It feels better in my hand, but that could be just me.
I must comment because you are the ONLY person who brought up the Prodigy Fine Edge in Coyote Tan. That is a limited production or at least was already discontinued, unless Gerber has changed their minds. The knife was ONLY available at Walmart stores and online, but then the price went from $40 to $50 and now the last of them are in stores. I might buy one or two more before they're all gone. This specific model has their 440C steel with the ceramic coat that is put on the Strongarm, so it is in effect and upgrade. Despite all this, nothing has been written or said about it except by me when I bring this subject up. I think Gerber should reduce and organize the prices on all these blades. And they should continue to offer a plain edge model Prodigy.
I love my Mora, also I have been using my SCHF 52 a little so far no problems I have fingers crossed hopefully I will have better luck then you had with yours.
I have the Schrader SCHF3N . it's an awesome field knife , but I do have to agree the sheath sucks . there are aftermarket sheaths out there but you really have to do some digging .
Hey Mike, this is a little off-topic, but here I go anyway. I trust your expertise and I wanted to know if you would ever consider designing and mass producing a bandana chock full of really good, high priority survival information on both sides. There are a few of these on the market, but they all suck. Either the information is useless or the quality of the fabric is bad.
Yes, I've seen the ones for sale online and they are all basic survival info (just like what is on the playing cards, it is all stuff you would have learned in the Boy Scouts lol). The problem lies in the fact that these are all cotton bandanas (because they absorb sweat off your brow or can be used to filter water), and the manufacturing company Silk Screens the info onto the bandana. It's a form of painting, which means the painted words of advice eventually wear off. The only way to make a good bandana that has good survival advice on it, would be to pay an extreme amount of money to a good embroidery shop that has a modern embroidery machine that has software where you could upload the graphics and words to it (which all design shops charge per logo/design/graphic), which makes it cost prohibitive to then sell to the consumer. Another option would be to laser it onto nylon, but that is also expensive and there are not as many companies out there doing the lasering. So yes, I would love to do it, but for now, there is no cheap way of getting a good survival bandana made to sell to the public.
Can you do a video and get to the bottom of SOL and emergency blankets. I never tested a blanket in temperatures that I would need it. i.e. my environment is colder than what I am clothed for. I have them solely for stranded in a car in a blizzard. Your thoughts?
Hey Mike, yep, Lawyer's on Speedial, got TWO Cops for Charecter Refs plus a City Councilman, etc. One good thing Ohio did a year ago was that ANY CHP, repeat ANY CHP is VALID in Ohio, and the Judges are allowing the Constitutional Carry States who don't issue an Out-of-State License (like Vermont) to claim their Drivers License as a Permit. Oh, as of last week, any ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY stationed in Ohio 18yo and Above can buy ANY Firearm they want including Handguns! And if their Military Pistol Training meets or exceeds the Ohio CCW Course, they can get a CHP w/o Jumping through the Hoops. So according to the Reports they have to Issue every Quarter, about 5% of the Legally Eligible Citizens of the State have their CHPs. And if we can ever get rid of Mike DeWine and Kasich, we stand a Good Shot at Constitutional Carry. Crossed Fingers! Take Care.
About time! We've had the military status ccw down south for years in multiple southern states. Surprised it took Ohio so long! We're hoping for a federal constitutional carry so we can tell Illinois to kiss our a&& lol.
could you do a review of the schrade schf6b knife I have been looking at that knife for a while but I want to get a second opinion and I haven't found somebody that has reviewed it very well
Mike, this may sound weird, but for me, when I go to the Woods, I carry a Folding Saw, a Mora and a (Fill in the Blank) Fixed Blade, of which I have a lot. But I have to get the Mora out of my Car Emergency Kit to carry it. And right now, I truly believe I need to make up some more Kits, and I need to get some more Moras. Like a Bic Lighter, Paracord, Steel Cup it's just one of those things that HAS to be there. YMMV, but thats working for me. Take Care.
That's how I've done it over the years, buy more gear as I can, buy duplicates, then triplicates, keep making up kits, bags, BOBS, etc lol. It takes some time, but you will get there too. And there is still more gear I'd like to purchase, just haven't been able to yet. But it's on the wish list! Keep checking Amazon, sometime they do a buy 2 for a great price deal!
LOL, Mike, sorry you misunderstood! Trust me, lack of Gear is NOT an Issue! Just off the Top of my Head, 2 medium Alice packs, 1 large, 1 Marine ILBM, 1 SCRAM bag, 4-5 Civvie Packs, plus Butt Packs, Shoulder Bags, Web Gear, MOLLE Vests, Pouches, Canteens, Bottles, Sleeping Bags, Boots, Paracord, Bank Line, Rifles, Pistols, Ammo enough to outfit a Infantry Squad! No, I need to make up some OFFICE Emergency Kits and I don't have enough Moras to go around! THE Wife starts a new Job on Monday right in the center of Cleveland, Ohio, yet her Car will be parked about 1.5 miles away. So she kept her her "Get Home Bag" in the car at her last place, but she was only about a Hundred Feet and 2 stories up from it. So she needs a Kit she can put in a File Drawer just in case she has to deal with an Emergency there on the Fourth Floor in the heart of Downtown, because she won't be able to access her car. Thus the need for another Mora. The damn blade is just too useful and too cheap NOT to have one in any emergency Kit I can think of. Sorry I wasn't clear before. Take Care!
Not a problem my friend. Are you sure you haven't been in my basement? Sounds like you and I have exact same gear LOL! Yes, she certainly needs a mora, some pepper spray, maybe a stun gun if allowed in Cleveland. CCW? She should if allowed. Definitely needs to be aware of her surroundings walking to and from the car, Cleveland can be rough. Sounds like time for a shopping trip!
But but but Mike the Gerber Prodigy is only 420 steel ...😅 Ugh, I get so tired of steel snobs. I've used the Prodigy for a year now and like you I've used many different steels, Gerbers 420hc is not the cheap Chinese crap the USA made 420 has an excellent heat treat. I recently bought the Strongarm and love it but I still like the Prodigy handle better, I agree with your review brother 100% spot on. If a person needs a good knife on a budget I honestly think the Prodigy and Strongarm can fill all their needs. I tell ya what though, I recently bought the Cold Steel SRK with VG1 steel and its officially my edc main blade, I think you would really like this knife. At first I was disappointed cause it was dull and felt like crap out of the box, but I convexed the grind and it became a completely different knife. Those things come with a horrible V grind probably 45° but once I shaved that puppy down it now cuts like a dream, the weight is spot on and the sheath is the best stock sheath I've ever had. Also the VG1 steel holds a wicked edge a bit tough to sharpen, but so nice once it is, its a perfect size blade for all around camp and survival. Great video once again, common sense is a rarity these days😉
Hi Mike ! I'm a new sub , enjoy your reviews I, I recently got sharade 37 + 28 ( little rickie ) , I've not beat the he'll out them !! Don't like to tourcher test , but so far , so good !, Thanks for the reviews ! Mike D. A Humble Prepper !!
I know I know, I need to do a Full Load Out video! I have a BOB video up, it is some of my very first videos (part 1 & 2) years ago, so you have to go all the way back to the beginning of my channel to see the Bug Out Bag! There are also descriptions on my website: www.schoolofselfreliance.wix.com/schoolofselfreliance
Hi Mike! Yes, there might be some Shopping, Hint!Hint! Now, her Routine is going to be driving on the Main Highway to the Cleveland Municipal Parking Lot by the Football Stadium. Her Company picks up the Tab for that. Then there's a Loop Bus that stops by there every 10 minutes, but there's Security on Site there. Gets on the Loop Bus, and one of its stops is her Building. But Thank God Ohio got Smart! The Gun Laws got Changed so as to allow CCW holders "Permission" to keep a Handgun in their Vehicle EVEN IF THE COMPANY IS A GUN FREE ZONE! AND it applies to Gooberment Parking Lots that aren't Federal. BUT the Bad News is that Cleveland is so Anti-Gun that most of the places Downtown put up "No Guns Allowed" signs, which under Ohio Law, we have to Obey. Now, Ohio STATE GUN laws override City Laws ( which Cleveland spent several million dollars LOSING and making Pay Outs over the last few years!), but Cleveland still has Jurisdiction over Knives, Pepper Spray, Stun Guns, etc. And of course they Banned them. FYI: Did you know it is Illegal to have a Knife over TWO inches long in Cleveland UNLESS it is a "Tool" for Work? So a Landscaper can strap a Machete on his hip, because it's a "Tool", but the guys from Ohio Open Carry ( LEGAL IN OHIO FOR OVER TEN YEARS, BTW!), walk down the Sidewalks with ARs and AKs every now and then! But get caught with a Buck Folder? So I'm thinking she'll be getting a Leatherman soon for her Purse ("Tool") with a one handed Blade and a good modern Flash Light with a Strobe ("Tool"). And next week we'll be seeing what her Work Space looks like. But her Emergency Kit for Work will be set up for 9/11 Scenarios more than Bushcrafting. Flashlight and Batteries, Pry Bar, N95 face mask, Trauma Kit, etc. And THAT is where the Mora is going, if we can Sneek it in. And I need to build one for my Locker also, even though my Car looks like a Cabelas! Anyway, Take Care, time for me to "Spring Clean" the Gear Room!
Glad to hear there will be security there for her and that Ohio finally changed their laws on vehicles. It wasn't that way years ago when wife was stationed there with AF. Oh yes, Michigan has the same stupid law regarding 3 inch blades, and a bunch of other idiotic knife laws here. Thankfully, they have very good CCW laws here and the CCW here is one of the few that has the most state reciprocity agreements (36 states honor Mich CCW), and we are a Shall Issue that includes defense against attempted rape as well as allowed to CCW in a bank (which most states do not allow). Having a kit at the office for urban threats is good. That is the most likely to encounter- madman w/weapon at a workplace. Make sure she scopes out all the exit points on her building. And as always, have a good lawyer you can contact should anything every happen. The USCCA has ccw insurance and legal services, they are worth looking into. Stay safe my friend!
The Gerber Prodigy I can vouch for as a great knife
My absolute choice is Mora. best possible price/quality ratio.

They are great knives. I've been very happy with them. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I have two Mora's. Love them both. I like the looks of the gerber but haven't seen one up close yet. I have several other knives that I consider too big to carry around as a backpacking knife (buck 119) but I use it in camp.
Love my old Prodigy and my Moras. If Mora made bigger blades they'd make a killing. Id buy them.
I have a Hoffman Richter Wolf Fixed Blade Knife and love it. It is a lot less than 50 bucks and that along with my mora I am one very happy camper. I also have a Condor Rodon which is less than 50 bucks and it is also another great knife that I love.
I love my Strongarm, and Prodigy. my Strongarm doesn't have serrations, but my Prodigy does. I will look and buy one without serrations.
what a bout the mora buch craft black, or the mora hevi dutie
I think the Glock 71 knife is of great value as well. I bought it after seeing a torture test.
Good choices in knives, I’d hope anyone purchasing a knife in this price range knows it will require sharpening and possibly some improvements. The Jeff white bush one knife from self reliance outfitters is the only suv 50 dollar knife I’ve ever purchased that didn’t require work.
What do you think of the schrade schf9?
Thanks Mike. You always give us straight forward facts and information.
In Canada the Selkirk is the same price as the gerber Strongarm. Amazon ~$77 in stores $100-120
I love the Mora too!
the companion mg hd is carbon but this test is incomplete without bushcraft black...Really
Gotta go with the Schrade Schf51.
Didn't know about the Prodigy available with a fine edge. Going to check it out. And like you say, the Mora just works, at every level.
Can you put links to where these are 50 or less?
that recurve looks like a mini kukri, kinda cool
Hello Mike, what's up? You've been gone quite a while.
If I were to request a video from you I'd like to hear about "Which tasks we shouldn't do with knives?" with the increasing trend of people use knives to baton big logs, digging, prying stuff, use as a spear tip, etc... and what are the better alternatives. Thanks!
China Tosinthiti not to worry I'll be back soon. We had some serious personal stuff going on that has not left much time for videos. I'll do a video in answer to your post. Thanks for checking back.
Hope you got stuff sort out and all is well.
Thank you very much in advance for the topic!
Use the knife to carve wooden wedges. No need to ever baton with a knife. Just plain stupid.
You are lucky I watch your videos to the end. I was going to ask about the Strongarm, and you threw it in there at the end. I have had it in my Amazon cart for like 6 months. I guess I can pull the trigger now. Thanks for another good vid.

I love my Mora, also I have been using my SCHF 52 a little so far no problems I have fingers crossed hopefully I will have better luck then you had with yours.
I hope you got one from a different batch. It seems to be the batch from last November that has problems. Let me know how it holds up!
I have the Schrader SCHF3N . it's an awesome field knife , but I do have to agree the sheath sucks . there are aftermarket sheaths out there but you really have to do some digging .
These are some Nice knifes i probebly gona buy some of then But i still like My knv2 to mutch
I was a Strongarm fan til I got a Terävä Jääkäripuukko 110 from Varusteleka!
Michael StJohn I have seen reviews on 110 and I am going to order one soon, I think it's going to be the best in it's price range bar none.

Love the feel but had two schf51... Junk. Both broke during batoning. Couldn't hold a mora he companions sweat towel!!!!

Do a video on $50-$100 dollar knives, please!
cant find the gerber without serrations. serrated is $70. where is this overall winner for $50 link?????????????
Wal-Mart, Gerber Prodigy fine edge $49.00 + tax. Handle, coyote tan.

There are plenty of good knives for $50 bucks. What are you talking about? You mean just fixed blades?
