    Imagine if Walt Disney had decided to make horror movies instead of animated family films.

      The original versions of a lot of the fairy tales that Disney has made movies of did have scary moments in them, since they were meant as cautionary tales, so I could see that happening. Can you imagine Frozen with the actual "The Snow Queen" plot?

    • @avshutsach
      @avshutsach 8 ปีที่แล้ว +156

      In the end of the original Pinocchio, Pinocchio eats Jiminy cricket and Candlewick dies from exhaustion. In the original Mulan, she wound up as a harem girl in Shan Yu's harem and committed suicide. In the Hunchback tale Esmeralda is hanged instead of burned at the stake and dies while Frollo watches and is then thrown off of the roof to his death by Quasimodo who then flees to the crypt where she is buried and holds her body until he dies of starvation and about eighteen months later, the tomb is opened, and the skeletons are found. As someone tries to separate them, they crumble to dust. in Cinderella one of the ugly stepsisters has her big toe cut off while the other has her heel cut off and then they and the evil stepmother have their eyes pecked out by birds. in the Snow white fairy tale, the queen attends Snow White and Prince Charming's wedding and when she arrives she is forced into red hot Iron shoes and is forced to dance until she drops dead. These stories are pretty dark and were for their times great tales and still are today.

    When it comes to Hunchback of Notre Dame, I say just list the whole movie. It starts out with the villain killing an innocent woman trying to protect her child, not to mention his terrifying death, it covers lust, genocide, and damnation as subject matters, and even the seemingly most innocent character, Clopin, tries to have the heroes hanged! List that whole movie lol

    Quasimodo's humiliation was kinda scary. Throwing rotten apples at him wasn't so bad, but tying him up like he was some kind of animal was deep.

    • @JGstarzintheireyes
      @JGstarzintheireyes 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +Prince Stormstrider Still, it's an important element in the story, the film wouldn't really work without it, and it's my second personal favourite WDAS film after The Lion King, and when you think about it, it does lead up to an incredible effective ending, Quasimodo steps into sight after his heroic actions and the crowd go silent, seeing they were wrong doing what they did to him now seeing how brave he is

    • @stormstrider1990
      @stormstrider1990 8 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      +JGstarzintheireyes Indeed. It was some nice build up. Like Don Bluth said: "You can show kids pretty much anything, as long as it has a happy ending." Besides, the original novel was a lot darker.

      I think The Hunchback of Notre Dame is one of the first movies that made me cry properly. Sure some of the other Disney movies made me shed a tear. But I couldn't watch the Hunchback for years after, seeing when he was tied down used to make me cry and scream 'no, stop why are they being so mean' also the statues around the Cathedral used to give me nightmare, still can't walk past one without feeling eyes on me. 😂 truly a haunting Disney movie. One of my favs now.

      Yeah, but Walt Disney - the guy who created the company - was a White Supremacist who was a Hitler supporter - in terms of agreeing with the guy, though I don't know if he ever donated to the man. And, some of the lesser-known short cartoons that were made in the 1940's - when the guy was still alive - were especially racist - as Dumbo was - & Nazi-esque. So, is it REALLY that surprising there would be some "dark" moments in the Disney franchise?

    I still feel like Frollo wins the award for one of the darkest moments in animated history. He wants Esmeralda(who's 16 in the books) to be his booty call and threatens her with death by pyre and Hell if she doesn't comply to him. Seriously. There's plenty of magical Disney movies that have dark moments, but this one is particularly fucked up because it's realistic.

      +Rowan Buchanan I think in a similar vein, when I see the clip they show of Scar with Simba after he killed Mufasa (as if that wasn't bad enough), there's an element of manipulating a vulnerable and heartbroken child's perspective, making him feel responsible while under the misleading guise of being an 'understanding uncle' that is very real and very infuriating that I don't think I understood on some levels when I first saw it at age 11.

    For me, the darkest scene in a Disney movie (though not necessarily the scariest) was the scene in Mulan where they come across an entire village that has been burned down and destroyed, they find out the general (the captain's father) is dead, and Mulan finds that child's doll and lies it next to the general's helmet and sword as a shrine. For me, I always had to cover my eyes or leave the room for that scene because it was so dark and sad...

    I find Mufasa's death very "overrated" because: A. It's something you see coming and which fits as a natural part of the story, and B. You see him live on in spirit form, and his final message to Simba successfully orchestrates his avengement and the restoration of his lineage's rulership.
    The Pinocchio donkey stuff should be #1, because the children are neither saved nor the villain even stopped from doing it to more. I firmly maintain the Coachman to be the darkest and most despicable Disney villain of all time.

    As evil as all villains come and go from classic disney to disney pixar, the one villain who is truly evil is Scar, he never truly got his hands dirty but he still pulled all the strings. He tore Mufasa off the wall and let him fall to his death, Scar didn't make the final blow, the wildebeast and fall did. Scar never went to kill Simba, the hyenas did. However he did give the calls for all of this, Scar had every alibi he needed, he could have blamed Simba for wandering off and caused a stampede, Mufasa went to save him but they both died,Scar could simply say he went to stop the hyenas but it was too late. Scar made himself a hero/king by killing the only family he had and lying to a child as he mourns over his admirable father, if that isn't pure evil then I don't know what is.

    I don't care how traumatizing Mufasa's death was. The Chinese troops coming on the burnt mountain village is probably the darkest moment in Disney history. Not only do you see the burnt and crumbling remains of a small peaceful town, it's mere seconds before you discover the fallen army, led by Shang's father. Shang realizes that his small group of barely trained greenhorn soldiers are the last hope for China as he gazes upon hundreds, even thousands of corpses slumped and half buried in the snow, which we also see. And, it's unexpected. Mere seconds ago, the soldiers were singing about a girl worth fighting for, a song they never even got to finish when the sight abruptly stopped their merry tune right before the last note.
    This scene is the darkest Disney has to offer because this scene captures the horror of war. If you hit a calm, you take a moment to laugh with buddies and talk about what you'll do when you get home, and the next moment, you're staring death in the face.

    Mufasa's murder is more sad than scary. Night on Bald Mountain should have definitely been higher on the list just for the images alone, and the Evil Queen's transformation from Snow White should have gotten more than an honorable mention xD

      I understand it as scary because Scar actually pins the murder to the son. How can it even get more scary than that?

    I agree that Shan Yu's subtle "Kill them" order was dark, but I think his darkest line was when he said he had to return the doll to the little girl, insinuating child murder and possibly rape
    Oh, and you forgot to mention the darkest part of Clayton's death! His fucking shadow is shown in the tree swinging by the rope! Without that it would just be your typical Disney villain death

    • @JasonJacksonJames

      aenjgeal WTF are you talking about, he never insinuated child murder and rape

    • @aenjgeal
      @aenjgeal 9 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      JasonJacksonJames It depends on who you ask, remember when he finds that little doll and says he should return it to the girl? Well, we've seen before with the arrow scene that he's very good at insinuating sinister things, and it's made very clear from the fact that he did burn down the village that he did at least mean to kill. Rape is a bit more speculative, but it is a possibility. We don't really know much about Shan Yu and what he would or wouldn't do, so he could have meant to rape as well. He did, however, definitely mean to kill.

    • @JasonJacksonJames
      @JasonJacksonJames 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      JasonJacksonJames Listen, he definitely was intending to kill the girl because he burned down the village, so he made his intentions there perfectly clear. Taking into account just how sinister Shan Yu seems to be, it seems reasonable that he could also means to rape women and children. You don't have to agree with me, but that's just my opinion.

    Nice list! However, I do think your order is wrong. Personally, I think Chernabog's scene from Fantasia takes the top spot. He's sending demons into HELL and enjoying it! Doesn't get much darker than that. Also, I think Bambi should have been on the list. Still, in some form, you covered almost everything that should be here.
    My choices:
    10. Pit of Souls from Hercules
    9. Dead Army from The Black Cauldron
    8. Pink Elephants on Parade from Dumbo
    7. Donkey Transformation from Pinocchio
    6. Evil Queen's Transformation from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
    5. Whole final battle with Ursula from The Little Mermaid
    4. Mother's Death from Bambi
    3. Mufasa's death and Simba's guilt from The Lion King
    2. Hellfire song from The Hunchback of Notre Dame
    1. Chernabog Sequence from Fantasia
    Honorable Mentions
    1. Headless Horsemen Sequence
    2. Clayton's Death from Tarzan
    3. Death of the Beast
    4. Maleficent's summoning powers of Hell

    When you think about it, Pinocchio is actually a horror movie.
    As a kid, I kept thinking about those children that where turned into donkeys and really didnt care about Pinocchio becomeing a real boy. I wanted to see those kids to become human again.
    But in this movie, the villain is not stopped or in any way hindered. That coachman appearantly just keeps turning kids into donkeys. He is doing far worse things than many disney villains even, there seems a stronger need for him to be stopped yet it does not happen.

      I read the book it was based off and the whole thing is a disturbing and confusing mess. Yet it's strangely entertaining. Disney actually toned down the darker aspects of the book. For example the Blue Fairy is a dead child and Pinocchio actually sees Lampwick die after being worked to death.
      As for confusing in the book after the Fox and Cat (can never remember their names) trick him out of his money he's put in jail for being stolen from. I think. IDK like I said it's a confusing book.

      no soul or soul, it's not sad. I've seen worse, WAY worse.
      Mufasa was just a cliffhanger fall, no big deal, Simba still ruled, if anything (and they should've allowed Pixar and 3-D animated Disney films), the first couple minutes of Up were sadder, much sadder, and so was Andy leaving the toys forever.

    • @dylangladysz
      @dylangladysz 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Well, yeah, the first 5 minutes of Up were pretty much the saddest moments in any movie ever. But that doesn't mean Mufasa's death isn't sad. I mean, can you remember the first time you saw it? You were probably bawling your eyes out! It doesn't make me sad anymore, but I've seen it about a million times, so I'm used to it. Anyway, they're probably saving Pixar and other 3d-animated movies for a different list since, clearly, there's a wide selection of sad moments there, too.

    The black cauldron is the most terrifying one of them. It freaked me out when I watched it as a kid. When I was younger, the gruesome death of that tarzan guy slipped by unnoticed, but now I understand what those scenes really implied. I kinda wonder how such a scene was approved by the film makers. Frolos hellfire song is another example, as a Kid you don't understand his character very much, but as a grownup you can understand what he really sings about and what that scarf sniffing actually means..

    "Night on Bald Mountain" should be #1. To be honest, whenever I watched Fantasia when I was a little kid, I'd always stop the tape at the end of "Dance of the Hours". This sequence was THAT "pee your pants" scary to me. It wasn't until I was in my pre teen years that I finally had the courage to watch this. Even now, considering I'm almost 23, the sequence still gives me goosebumps. :S
    Plus, I'm also surprised that any sequence with Maleficent wasn't on this. She's the ultimate symbol of "pure evil".

      OMG! Hell yeah Night on Bald Mountain should be #1. Plus, that scene they mention from Mickey's Christmas Carol should be #2. That part scared me as a kid but it scares me even more today because back then, I thought the fire just meant that your body gets burned when you die; I didn't know it was supposed to be Hell until I was like in my late teens. So, anyway, yeah. Those two scenes are by far the scariest and darkest in my opinion. Mufasa's death is sad and all but I wouldn't call it 100% pure nightmare fuel.
      Note to WatchMojo.com: Mickey's Christmas Carol came out in 1983, not 1982. You were close though. Just thought I'd point that out.

    Really the Headless Horseman only at #10? That scene should have been #4 or higher.
    That scene scared me out of my mind when I was little. I felt exactly like poor Ichabod during the buildup, after seeing that movie I was scared to fall asleep worried that I would see the Horseman riding down my block.
    He is the scariest Disney villain to me (with Maleficent at #4, Chernabog at #3 and The Horned King #2) and I can give 6 good reasons why:
    1. He is a clad in black horseman with a blood red cape.
    2. The only vocalization he makes is shear evil inhuman laughter.
    3. He rides an all black horse with red eyes.
    4. He has a fiery Jack O Lantern.
    5. He lacks the appearance of a face.
    6. The fact that he is one of the few Disney villains to have "won".

    Scar's Murder of Mufasa is not only Disney's Darkest moment, it's the definitive moment where Scar truly gives himself over to his own Darkness.
    I love this scene for Scar. It's a tense and emotional scene, but sometimes you have to calm down and really appreciate how well Scar Orchestrated this day.
    First - he put Simba in position.
    Then - Acting like a Concerned Uncle, he goes to Mufasa and warns him about the Stampede.
    - Both of them together go and search for Simba, prompting Mufasa to dive in.
    Up until this point, Scar has been a terrific actor. He is smart enough to put on the "Right Face" when the time is needed. And after that, it just gets better.
    After Mufasa goes in, he's left with Zazu. When Zazu announces he'll go for help, Scar drops the charade and does whatever is necessary to keep his plan from failing. He knocks the Majordomo out with one hit.
    And here is where it gets REALLY interesting...
    We see Mufasa and Simba surviving the stampede, and Mufasa managing to get Simba out alive. Scar is seeing this too. It's the scene where he's menacingly walking along the edge of the cliff, staring at the scene. His eyes look wide, like he can't believe what's happening. It's because he really can't; they're both still ALIVE at this point. AND it looks like Mufasa is strong enough to get them both out. It's at this point Scar is realizing he's come too far - this plan HAS to work one way or another.
    Up until this point, Scar has been a Boss-Character; someone who delegates the responsibilities of killing his enemies to a middle-man, so that he can keep his paws clean. But he's seeing that the stampede created by the Hyenas isn't working the way he thought, and Mufasa is nearly out of the fray. Scar is now staring down at his older brother, knowing that THIS is the only chance he has left to secure power. We can see him thinking about it for just one moment and then he lunges forward, eyes widened as he himself cannot believe he is going through with it. Then the adrenaline runs out and he smiles into his brother's face, and cements his place as the greatest Disney Villain as he says four simple words...
    "Long. Live. The King..." - Words said at the Coronation of a NEW King.
    And casts his brother from the cliff to be trampled below...

    • @dylangladysz

      Yeah, those Heffalumps and Woozles were disproportionately scary, being that they were in a Winnie the Pooh cartoon. As for The Black Cauldron's visual style, I think it was just representative of animation at the time. The reason you don't see more Disney animation like that was because Disney hit a huge dry spell after (and possibly because of) The Black Cauldron, and then made a big comeback in the late 80's and early 90's.

      @RAFL94 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess it depends on how you see it. It's very well animated for It's time, and the sound is amazing. But the story and characters are mostly unoriginal as the lion king is pretty much a rip-off of, Kimba the White Lion. The only difference being that Kimba the White Lion was a TV-serie (although 2 movies were also made). Not a movie. But the scenes, the characters, pretty much everything is the same. Even the name of the main characters are similiar Kimba/Simba. In this regard the Lion king is overrated. And the original is not getting anywhere near the credit it deserves. Also disrespectful from disney for not giving any credit.
