    The band must have been so satisfied, so enthusiastic about Floor's performance, that they must have realized long before Wacken that she was the singer for them.
    I think the very day she agreed to join the band on tour, it was already clear to Tuomas that she was the next Nightwish singer. He had already seen it sung on stage with "After Forever".

      Nightwish and After Forever toured together in 2002, so Nightwish knew all about Floor's capabilities. In fact when Tarja left, Tuomas and Marko discussed both Floor and Simone, but didn't reach out, because both ladies were occupied in their own bands - and Tuomas wanted to go another way in style of singing - therefore Anette Olzon

    This was in the Annette era, and she did give some pop sensibility to the band. And Floor, of course, can't help but be a golden talent. Then again, Floor could sing a phone book and it would sound awesome....she has, in fact, done so. There's a vid somewhere here on YT about it.

    In my family, 3 generations are now infected by the Nightwish virus.
    First my grandparents got it in 1999, then I followed in 2013, and since the concert at the Ziggo Dome in 2022, my mother has also been infected.
    Something seems to be doing Nightwish right when they can inspire people across generations.

    The most poppy Nightwish songs were written for Annette, this being one of them, to match Annette’s abilities. The operatic interlude in the middle was originally a backing track as it was beyond Annette’s vocal abilities. Just another example of what Floor brought to the band as their ultimate singer.

    She had been officially invited to join the band soon before Wacken, along with Troy. I believe that is why there is so much joy and positive energy in this performance (I wrote this before I heard you say basically the same thing), truly one of the greatest live performances ever. However, it was the bands intention to keep it secret until after the festival and touring season, and announce it close to the Christmas season. But when it came time to package up the performance from Wacken, Showtime Storytime, they realized it wouldn’t be right to title Floor and Troy as guest musicians on the DVD, so they decided at that point, I think sometime in October, that they needed to make the permanence public!

    When Metal does Pop, they remind people of how it actually is done, this track is outstanding and yes... absolutely, this is a Pop song in Metal, no doubt about that.
    But what a song it is, a soaring track that takes you on a fairytale trip through "Nightwish land", it's classic song writing at it's peak.
    But you'll find after listening to more and more tracks, that if any band can deliver any message in the most epic way, it is going to be Nightwish, story tellers extraordinaire.

    Every song is different, but this differs more so from the 1st 2 you listened to because it's from the Anette era, from 2011 Imaginaerum album. Romanticide and GLS were Tarja era. Tarja was the most operatic, Anette more of a pop/rock style.
    Tuomas likes themes of stories and childhood innocence. Storytime was inspired by the 1982 movie, The Snowman. Floor decided to sing the operatic part at the end, which is done solely with the choir on the studio recording.
    Just a bit of TMI 🤣, but we understand the love for everyone in the band.

    This is our Valkyrie Goddess for you. And you witnessed first hand a "Dutch Windmill" , and to finish you off, The Operatic "Cruise Missile" !!!!
    Awesome tune , although on it's original form (Studio recording) is kind of a pop/rockish sound, so you are not wrong here, (originally sung by Anette. Great singer also, I might add), but Floor gave it soooo much POWER (Now it's More Metal) !!! Including this "Operatic" part, what was originally done by children's choir because vocal limitations on their second singer, but Floor has none of that "Limit"!!!
    Nightwish lyrics are often a bit interpretive, and not as "straight forward" as many other bands, because Tuomas ( The Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen: founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish.) prefers people to put their own interpretations and life experiences into the lyrics. you connect with songs on a personal level when there is something there that relates to things you have gone/are going through, and you may even find new connections later on in life when you have gone through other big events/emotions. there might be songs you are quite indifferent about (oh, nice song) and then you go through something big and all of a sudden it makes you break down in tears because now you relate to something in the lyrics you didn't before, and see it from a whole new perspective. imagination and life experiences are powerful, and Tuomas has great appreciation of this.
    SO....

  • @Songfugel
    @Songfugel ปีที่แล้ว +5

    8:05 No it is, 100% it is more Pop than the other songs, since the singer (Anette) it was adjusted to (who replaced the first singer [Tarja] who it was originally planned for) was mainly a pop/rock singer, Anette.
    In fact, this song used to have a ridiculously poppy-bounce to it, especially in the chorus (which is still kinda there, but very tuned down), however, when Floor replaced her, Tuomas recomposed the song to suit Floor's strengths and to be way closer to his (most likely) original vision for it. He took out the ridiculously poppy bits away from the vocals (but left it in instrumentals), and replaced it with Floor pushing harder with metal/rock intensity when the song goes poppy, to keep the song fun, but not childish (as Anette's version). This change absolutely skyrocketed this song from one of their weakest songs to one of the fan favourites
    And before someone starts hissing, throwing salt and hateful comments at me, yes yes, I know some of you liked the pop/mainstream Nightwish the best, and you are absolutely entitled to that opinion, but I personally don't feel that way, at all. IMHO even Anette was at her best in Nightwish, when she dropped the pop beat, and went for the more intense/rock vibe
    ps. we all knew she was a permanent member the moment we saw her with the band for the first time, there was absolutely no way in hell they would have let her go

      I agree. When I first heard the album version of this song, still assuming NW to be a metal band first & foremost, I just couldn't believe the kiddie-pop vibes emanating from those backing vocals. @@BrendonChase_2015 Yeah, I think you nailed the issue. It was so totally different from what people had come to expect from Nightwish (and it doesn't help how epicly the song starts to change into a pop song mid-step) that caused such a huge portion of their fanbase to feel abandoned by Nightwish's move from metal to more commercially viable mainstream pop.

    The "pop" description is not a detraction in my opinion. It does follow the common song structure that you mentioned, which many Nightwish songs don't. This is one of the more "approachable" songs in the Nightwish catalogue, one of the ones that might have been (or actually was) played on the radio.

    • @melvinthinks
      @melvinthinks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't want to upset people by calling it 'pop' but I'd say it's more commercial and accessible vs the other songs I've heard from them thus far. Still a banger though!!!

    @clivematthews5296 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You are so right about the pop feel because this was written for Anette who was only a pop singer and Tuomas wrote for her. Floor has given it more bite and could sing the middle operatic part which Anette couldn't. Previous songs that you've listened to were written for the very operatic Tarja Turunen which again were given a different vibe by Floor with more variety in the vocals.

    That track was originally made by Tuomas to Anette - and Anette's voice was more pop than anything else so of course, Tuomas had to make songs that fit into singers vocals. Some songs sound great when Floor sings them but I'm not a fan of all songs. (And yes. I've been a fan ever since 1996 and yes I'm Finnish and I live in Finland and I still don't like all the Nightwish songs.) (You can hate me freely).

    Very well done! Honestly think you should continue the book intros. Maybe change the book with every new NW song? Nightwish is all abt storytelling so there's that. Since your channel is clearly above mere fishing for likes, I have a suggestion for you: dare your viewers to write a short introduction for you to read out loud.
    You can make it a thing in your community tab, or - supposing you know what your next NW song is going to be - just tell at the end of your video, like "Listen up you cr3tins, nxt NW song will be .... so I expect nothing less than Shakespearean level intros in the comments section from you guys, okay?!!" Example.. 🤔

      Tuomas has a song called The Eyes of Sharbat Gula(Afghan woman who was on the cover of a National Geographic) and he was struggling with lyrics. Troy, the multi instrumentalist of the group, told him that it didn't need lyrics. All you will hear vocally is the London Choir in the background. It is hauntingly beautiful.@@melvinthinks

    Hey bro!
    First, this is not the studio version of Storytime! Floor, being who she is, improvised the last bit of pure vocals at the end, something Annette Olzon never did.
    That being said, this is a song that actually showcases Floor in such a way that puts her vocal versatility on display, going from rock/metal to operatic and back again.
    Definitely one of the most "radio-friendly" songs Nightwish has made.
    See you next time, bro! Cheers from across the pond! 🍻

    Nope, "pop" is correct. This is an Anette song - the other two were Tarja songs. When Tarja departed they wanted someone with a different vibe figuring that a similar singer would always be plagued with comparisons to Tarja. Tarja's sound is operatic, Anette's sound ia almost always described as pop.
