July 2019, Mangalore-Karwar Section, Konkan Railway
This is possibly my best in the series yet, with another Volume coming up in a few weeks for the Karwar-Mangalore return journey. With rapid electrification on this section, it is only a matter of time before the peaceful diesel section is riddled with wires and soulless electric locos. I hope this series of videos will serve as a nostalgic reminder of more beautiful times.
Track sounds on Konkan Railway are in a league of their own, and I have tried to record sounds at every speed between standstill and 90kph. All videos recorded on board the Bangalore-Karwar Express (which had an Erode WDM3D) using a GoPro Hero 5 Black and Zoom H1n.

The sound and the scenery makes me feel nostalgic about our Mangalore-Mumbai journey we used to have in Matsyagandha on every vacation. Matsyagandha was not just a train but an emotion for me and my siblings.
Specially when we go to mangalore 12619 . My childhood memories in this train.
Especially when it had ED WDM3D before Ed 4D and GOC 4D was made its link!

Though I alaways travel through flights , but the rhythmic sounds of train wheel, track change and horn sound attract me towards the train . I feel it that train journey is far more better than flight journey.

This is something which every RF wants....online there are background music for meditation...for sleep....for study....but we RFs enjoy these track sounds.....Also thnx a lot for making such videos....a lot of hard work goes in making such videos....the combo of SL track sounds with konkan railway visuals is like HEAVEN

I moved out of India when I turned seven. I’m in my early teens now. I used to visit my family back in India for two months every year but due to this ordeal and other circumstances, I haven’t been able to travel back in over three year now. I desperately miss the sound of the trains, the rickshaws, my grandparents and the loud community celebration. Thank you so much for uploading this; this is of immense help and is tremendously gratifying. P.S. your arms; ouch! It must hurt holding the camera like that.

Yeah my arms did hurt after an entire day of holding the camera at the door almost continuously, but I'd say it was totally worth it.
I once stood at the door for almost 4 hours straight enjoying the track sounds, EMD notching ,honking and the beautiful landscapes of SWR. It was worth it. Sheer pleasure! Thank you for the videos Dheeraj sir:)

Wonderfull creation brother. It helps me to calm down somehow. I used to go home every year during my summer holidays. It was a three day journey. So whenever I hear the sound of train, I feel I have reached home and I feel safe. Thank you brother, this helps me a lot.

Hats off to you man. I see myself in you in terms of relishing the train journey. I even sometimes choose unreserved coach when tickets are not available instead of alternatives just to feel this sound and sleep in corners with that full crowded.
PWay Engineer here. The soothing sounds are mainly because of a track feature called short welded rails. Where a fish plated joint is given at every 39m. When the wheels (which are also spaced in a fixed pattern across the length of the train) jump across these free joints, the amazing rhythm is generated.
However such a track structure is a nightmare from a maintenance perspective. We have continuous welded rails today. No free joints for as long as 12-14kms depending on block section length. And that's why no rhythmic knocking sounds.
Thanks for the explanation. Yes LWR has all but removed the rhythmic sounds that our trains have always been associated with. Anyway the bogies on LHB coaches are way more random and noisy when it comes to track sounds from the perspective of a traveller so it's good in the long run. People like me though will always travel to the remaining SWR sections to record them as memories.

It has been over 20 years since I travelled in a train in India. But I travelled a lot in my student years. This soundtrack brought me memories and it felt I was rocking along with the sound. Lovely.
