I have enjoyed all remedy games/stories and story snippets in the past so it was no surprise for me that i would like this one. Yeah the complete dismissal of the lore pickups was weird for me, as I have probably spent just as much time reading the notes and listening to audiotapes as I have playing the actual game. Also, the point of the Motel sequences isn’t really the actual puzzles but just how dripping in eerie atmosphere they are. If stuff like the noise that plays when you pull the light switch, the changing paintings, the empty room, and shit that absolutely fucking terrifying jumpscare of Jesse’s brothers face that comes up when you’re heading to the Panopticon doesn’t do it for you then I don’t know what to say

    I loved this game. Me and a friend split the cost of the ps4 version and I handed it off to him shortly after beating it. And I'm quite happy with that. I don't think I'll be buying the ultimate edition in the near future (certainly not on pc at least, if you didn't have the hardware to play it at the best settings, I can't even imagine how low the settings and framerate would be for me lol). I don't think the game lends itself very well to replaying it right away. A lot of the game's appeal to me was in its atmosphere. The gunplay never really hooked me and most of the time felt like a pace breaker. In fact, in a lot of ways the game reminded me of playing Arkham Asylum for the first time, how the game's world felt tinged in an unsettling unease all the way through and you got to explore every nook and cranny. And I think that vibe/mood really resonated with me. Control is, in a way, kind of a horror game for people who are too nervous to play an actual horror game. It's not specifically trying to scary you, you'll have gunfights everywhere. But once all the enemies are taken care of, the game gets quiet, all you can hear is diegetic sound, and you start to be hear the chants of people possessed by the Hiss, and you remember, "oh yeah, there's a lot of floating bodies in here." And they all seem to be able speak in a way that's just difficult enough to comprehend that it might as well be gibberish, while still being able to make out enough to recognize words and phrases.
    So I'd disagree with the game being edgy. Maybe it's a difference in opinion on what the word means, but there weren't any moments in the game that felt ham fisted with how dark or, quote un-quote, "real" the game is. It's all very surreal and the narrative for me was really exciting to see what impossible thing would happen next. I guess one of my favorite genres is just "Nonsense Sci-Fi" lol! Where something crazy and downright impossible happens, but all the characters take it seriously.
    Also, the building itself is pretty odd. The fact the main charater walked right in despite it being in lock down made me think less that the writers forgot, and more that something wanted or allowed Jessie to come in. Be it a force inside, the spirit with Jessie, Ahti, or maybe it was the building itself that wanted her.
    Sorry this got so long, I thought this would be way shorter. So I'll just end this by saying that this was a good review, I hadn't thought of this game in a while so it was fun being reminded of it. I didn't know there was an ultimate edition coming out. I wish I could just upgrade my current version to it, since like I said, replays aren't this games strongest suit. But I wouldn't mind being able to do all the sidequest stuff and other added content with my completed save. Oh well, I liked the game a lot and I'll probably play it again when it'll be fresh for me again. Maybe that's when I'll buy the ultimate edition.

      @@85wastedyears for these games like I said I consider that the lower framerate is actually a part of the gameplay, where you have to be very careful and precise in which moments the game drops FPS for making good use of "culling" techniques. I know that no game is made with a lower framerate in mind, especially nowadays, where people get so used with ++120 FPS that can't even play anything at 30 FPS. When F-Zero X was released, people thought the graphics were pretty bad and didn't give a shit about the incredible stable 60 FPS this game had, but people at that time loved games with good graphics but terrible framerate (like I said, goldeneye, perfect dark, Turok 2, etc)... so I guess that makes sense at that time. Maybe I'm just not used to play games at higher framerate, I'm now playing Sonic Generations at 240p running at 20 FPS or lower in my shitty Intel Celeron laptop with no graphics card and I'm enjoying a lot. I really wanted to play Sonic Forces, but the game just crashes.

    I played this game on a 2070 Super and RTX plus DLSS made it look pretty great most of the time. The story let you get into it if you wanted by reading really interesting lore, but it didn’t get in the way if you wanted to go headlong into shooting. And the gunplay and psychic powers are intuitive and extremely satisfying, especially in the last 1/3 of the game once you have more upgrades and ability unlocks. Not a timeless classic like some people are claiming but it was definitely still fun.

    You should know that you don't have to miss out on any of Steam's features when buying games outside of Steam. If you just add them to your Steam library as "non-Steam games" you get the full functionality that you would get from games purchased directly from Steam, with the exception of achievements and cloud saves, which are things that the other launcher hopefully provides.

    The lore is hella cool if you're into SCP type stories, my only real issue with the game were the hard to see insta death pits like you mentioned and some of the end game content that artificially raises difficulty with cheap af enemies that kill you super fast without you being able to tell what happened

    • @CuriousKey

      Here's the thing, I can get into a *good* lovecraft-esque story, but it has to be good. My issue with most stories of this ilk is they tend to be rather shoddily put together and have lots of plausibility gaps, inconsistent logic, internal contradictions etc. Does Control's story manage to make some kind of sense within its own logic? If so, could be fun.

    Hey Nerrel! I am a life long console player who is interested in trying out Gyro. I watched your videos about it and was thinking about giving it a shot with this game on steam. Would you recommend using the steam software or downloading Joy Shock Mapper?

    • @Nerrel
      @Nerrel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Steam works well for third person shooters, you'll have to set the gyro as a mouse and then use mode shifting to kb+mouse inputs when pulling the left trigger. I haven't tried Joy Shock Mapper for just gyro yet but I think it's better for FPS

    • @AL2009man
      @AL2009man 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Nerrel I can give additional info to why you need to use Mode Shift.
      Usually, certain games allow you to use both Controller and Mouse Input at the same time, and is often relied upon for Gyro Aiming or Steam Controller's Trackpads. But for the case with Control; despite being a Single-Player-focused game, it doesn't support that.
      For those who want to use Gyro Aiming, there are 2 workarounds: Use Mouse Joystick (Which the Right Stick functions as a Mouse) or go full Keyboard/Mouse at a cost of Analog Movement.
      Thankfully, Mode Shift is a decent workaround as you press a Button/Trigger and it'll switch to any a Alternative Controller Layout. This is the method Nerrel went with.

    • @Matt-gh2zm
      @Matt-gh2zm 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AL2009man Could you expand on this? I have right mouse mapped to LT, and gyro as mouse with mode shifting on left trigger full pull as he does in the video, but then what? How do you get it to actually use m&kb controls during an LT press?

    • @AL2009man
      @AL2009man 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Matt-gh2zm simple, you bind all the Necessary Keyboard+Mouse Binds (matching Controller Layout) to the Controller in Mode-Shift Mode.
      You also have to bind Left and Right Bumpers (L/R or L1/F1) with Chorded Press since they don't offer Mode Shift options.

    This game really solidified my decision from a few years ago to buy most AAA games at least 6 months after launch. You can usually get a great sale price and occasionally a definitive edition that includes all dlc. It really makes me wonder what can be done about this for folks who want to support on launch... As it is, these folks are basically beta testers (see differences between dlss 1.0 and 2.0 and paying far more for that inferior experience).
    I also wonder about the lazy man's metroidvania maps and abilities that have been popping up. I feel like once I realize locations are being gated by abilities, I instantly know to wait to do most side quests and optional exploration to avoid wasting time... (GOW2018 is another example of this) In Control especially, waiting until you get flight dramatically aids in giving combat at least some variety. Doing optional areas before that necessarily means more poorer combat experiences...
    P. S. I love the DF saltire 😂 but yea... Playing on a 2080ti took this game to a different level for me, it's basically a tech demo for rtx.
