You did well in having that police escort - the Sharm to Suez road is lethal - even in daytime. I've driven it several times and it scared me rigid. I had an Egyptian colleague killed on that road too.
What happened exactly when you drove it and your friend that was killed? I was under the impression southern Sinai was safe thanks to the tight military/police control of all roads in and out.

Enjoyed my visit to the Sinai. Heavy police and military presence, a bit uneasy at first but you get used to it.
