    Finite element Modelling of steel structure in etabs
    4 Storey building
    1st storey = 15 feet
    Remaining storeys = 12feet
    All Bays are 24x24ft
    Steel moment frame
    Composite floor system
    No beam deeper than 18inches
    Dead load = Self weight+40psf(partitions etc.)+300lb/ft on perimeter beams
    Live load = 100psf(Reducible as less than 100psf See ASCE 7-10 code)
    Earthquake load ASCE 7-10 as default in Etabs
    Wind load ASCE 7-10 at 100mph
    Steps for design of steel structure using etabs
    Grids define for steel structure building in etabs
    Material define
    Import beams and columns W shapes
    Lateral force resisting Beams shall be preferably W16-W18
    Lateral force resisting Columns shall be from W14-W18
    Define autoselect section list
    Define Deck section as designed -For deck design refer to manuals such as vulcraft (USA) etc.
    Master storey and draw in similar storeys
    Draw lateral force resisting beams (AutoLatBm) and columns (A-LatCol)
    Secondary beams by quick draw beams (A-CompBm)
    Metal Deck on steel beams (Draw as clockwise) without meshing on frames
    Add exterior cladding for application of wind load by auto draw cladding by floors as they define perimeter of our building in our case, the cladding must have no stiffness or mass
    Load patterns
    Dead,Super dead, Cladding, Reducible Live,EQX,EQY ,Wind X,Y
    Modify Seismic load and define parameters as per ASCE 7-10 code
    Wind loads using exposure from frame and shell include shell objects
    Apply Gravity loads to model (SDL, Cladding)
    Draw developed elevation definition (R,B,T,L) for unfolded view
    Turnon local axis of shell
    Go to left and assign wind pressure coefficients (At windward Cp =-0.8 for positive X direction)
    Go to Right and assign wind pressure coefficients (At Leeward Cp =0.8 for positive X direction)
    Similarly for Y direction apply loads as per local axis orientation of cladding shell
    No diaphragm is assigned to steel deck
    Add Combinations in combos and design of beams, columns and secondary beams
    Run Model
    Check SFD, BMD, AFD of model
    Right click a secondary beam and go to design tab see its selected as composite beam design
    Design of composite beams, View revise composite beam overwrites, AISC 360-10, Unshored Construction, Deflection, Walking Vibration, Start design check
    Verify design and analysis section
    Right click on any composite beam and see analysis and design section difference
    You may check design report
    Re run for matching the analysis and design section
    Verify all members passed
    Select all frames, design composite beams and make the auto section as null to remove a list assigned and make a single design section assigned to members
    Now its up to you the whether make uniform design by selecting a single heaviest secondary beam and assign to all secondary beam.
    Proceeding to lateral force resisting beams
    Select beams and go to steel design option and select lateral bracing option as user defined, and assign at quarter points(0.25,0.5,0.75 at bottom) as we have secondary beams providing lateral bracings to these beams
    Select all beams again and overwrites as IMF or SMF as per your choice
    Right click on beam and go to design tab see its selected as Steel Frame design
    Start design
    Re-Run, for analysis and the design sections
    Check PM ratios
    Check the analysis and design section difference
    Verify all members passed
    In the next videos we will discuss in detail the design of columns, steel plate shear wall design, how to design different steel structures, framing systems, the complexity of different types of structural stabilities specially in tall buildings .

    hi, when assigning the lateral bracing, why you selected the all the perimeter beams because only some of the beams are connected with the purlins while other beams are not connected with purlins. But you assigned lateral bracing points to all the perimeter beams. can you explain me. ?
    when assigning the lateral bracing points, why you provided bracing type as bottom? What does it mean ?

    Regarding side wall and roof coefficient we don't need to apply....just windward wall cofficient and leeward wall coefficients?

      We can check for deflections, to satisfy our needs . While design can be carried out using vulcraft manual, don't worry i'll upload a video

    how to design check deck slab??

      Deck slab cannot be designed in current etabs versions . It is considered pre designed member just for load transfer and stiffness consideration . Design of deck, composite deck can easily be carried out manually using span, number of spans and live loads for vibrations . For example vulcraft manual etc.
