I have resonated so strongly with this waiata. I haven't done my pepeha but believe this is part of my heritage. I will be singing this at my nieces 21st.
Whakataka te hau ki te uru Whakataka te hau ki te tonga Kia mäkinakina ki uta Kia mätaratara ki tai Kia hii ake ana te atakura He tio he huka he hauhuu... Tihei Mauri Ora! (Ano ...) Cease the winds from the west Cease the winds from the south Let the breezes blow over the land. Let the breezes blow over the sea. Let the red tipped dawn come, with a sharpened air, a touch of frost & the promise of a glourious day. Sneeze! t'is the breathe of life
I absolutely love this, I played it when I buried a tree in honour of my dad after he passed, when I buried my whare tangata after having cancer. The video and waiata brings tears to my eyes every time. Thank you for sharing this taonga ❤️ I’m sitting on the coast of kaikōura playing it once again. It connects me to all there was, is and will be.
Arohanui Whäea Have borrowed to share. We used to sing this at all our Ataaranagi Kaiako Wänanga back in 2005-6. Not sure who's singing it here. Engari Ataahua hoki. Aku mihi me te aroha noa Te Umuariki :)
Whakataka te hau ki te uru Whakataka te hau ki te tonga Kia mākinakina ki uta Kia mātaratara ki tai Kia hī ake ana te ata kura He tio He huka He hauhu Tīhei mauri ora
From what I can work out, tune half step down C to F main repeating section Then Dm G7 Em Am Dm G Back to C to F repeat Then at Tihei Mauri Ora it is Dm G C F Remember to tune guitar half a step down to D# G# C# F# A# D# or it will sound really bad.
Morena, I am seeking permission to share this karakia and waiata with my primary school choir. Would anyone be able to share contact details for the composer of the melody - Takirau Hohua - please? Many thanks in advance!
Kia ora Bianca. Copying a comment by Hotere Koko from a video that linked to this one, in case it helps you: "This verse/karakia was given that tune in 2005 by Takirau Hohua of Tainui. Our group are students from Kura Takiwa o Te Ataarangi. The words are old from many generations ago. This song is on the CD 'Waiatatia te Reo'. The original singers are Priscilla Peihopa, Takirau Hohua, Hariata Walker-Grace, Kakina Te Aute Hohua and Koko Hotere. The CD was done for students learning the Maori Language." th-cam.com/video/_uQqIGt3H2w/w-d-xo.html
