The 928 has always been my dream car. I would take one over a Veyron, or any Lambo or Ferrari.

Back when I was a really, really young boy, I had a small Matchbox scale model of the Porsche 928. It was old, banged up, wheels didn't quite work, but it was the only model of a Porsche that I had, and I loved it. I used to make imaginary races with it, pushing it around the carpet my mum had bought for me which had roads on it.
Many, many years passed by, and I was on TH-cam watching a special episode of Top Gear, where Jeremy, James, and Richard had to drive V8 cars, and Jeremy got a 928. I had never seen the real thing on video before, I never bothered to Google the scale model I had. Then Jeremy told his story, about one day in 1995 when he got news that his father was ill. He was reviewing a 928 at the time, and he drove the car to the hospital and made it just in time to say goodbye to his father. Half an hour later he passed away. He said that if it weren't for the fact that the 928 could easily hold it at 170mph, he wouldn't have been able to say goodbye to his father.
From that point on, I knew, one day I'm gonna get a 928 of my own. And that old Matchbox scale model will be on it's dashboard. One day

I had a matchbox 930 Turbo with what looked like old Formula 1 wheels on it. I would build cities with skyscrapers (empty boxes that alcohol bottles came in) and have fun driving around for hours.
I had a dark blue Cobra. Oh and a bunch more I didn't realise were real cars until I really got into them.
My Dad has had an '88 928 S4 for the last 20 years and I'm absolutely in love with it :)
Is it a manual?
+CockatooDude No he chose the Auto as he could to get one in better condition for the money, and the manual gearbox on 928s is a bit of a pig.
Also, it had such a brilliant Mercedes auto box that all the motoring press went for the automatic. It was more in-keeping with the GT nature of the car. At any speed you could floor it and it would kick down often a couple of gears and your seat would kick you in the back. They were really fun. 90% of those sold had auto boxes!
Portabledexter Yeah I know, I am looking for one to buy, and it is so damn hard (and not to mention expensive) to find one with a manual.
+CockatooDude they made the S4 manual after 1990. The S4 Manual became the GT. If you want a late 928 & a manual a 928 GT is your best bet :)

928 is awesome. One of the three of my all-time favourite Porsches: 928, 997 911 Carrera S and Cayman GT4

I loved Porsche all my life... until mid 90's. Obviously I respect every opinion, but 993, for me was the last Porsche. I own a black 951with only 22k miles.
I feel like the 996 doesn't really count, but the 997 and the first gen 991s seemed like quality porsche to me, albeit watercooled. I just wish they could've kept making the 928 and evolving it like they did the 911.
Yes 993 was it. The Boxster became the new 911.... you know what I mean sportier and lighter and less GT, which is where the 911 headed. Don't get me wrong it still makes great numbers but....

My father had an 87' 928 S4 in rock green metallic. It might just be one of the prettiest cars I've ever seen. So sleek and mellow. I loved that car to death.
I was 17 year old Valet parker. I took a 928GT for a long ride on the Hutchinson river parkway in NY an Connecticut. Max rpm in 4th Gear manual trans .. Still remember it to this day, What a car.
I'd like Porsche to bring back the 928 by giving us a coupe version of the Panamera.
I think it would look great as a coupe.

They would have completely different characteristics, handling wise at least.

Well they are testing something similar, rumoured to be shown at the Paris Motor Show later this year.
Daniels30 I've read stories about Porsche doing this with the Panamera for some time, maybe they don't think there's a business case for it.
Saw a 928 up close the other day. I never liked the looks too much, but I have to admit it looks REALLY refreshingly good in 2016. Its aged extremely well.
They do something that very few cars can do. They look good regardless of what is trendy in car culture, and they don't show their age. Lots of the most timeless cars ever made like the E-Type and the NSX still look good, but you can tell what time they're from. A 928 looks nothing like a 1970s and 80s car. It's still futuristic and doesn't look its age. The 928 and the 944 sent something of a shockwave through the car design world, and you can still see the effects in today's cars. The AMG GT looks a LOT like a 928, especially from the back.
A 928 you need to see in rel life to appreciate it. Photos do not do it any justice.

The 928 is a stone classic.
I love the 928, always have from when I first saw it as a lad in the 80's. The styling is absolutely beautiful even today. I also love that it's so underrated, especially by Porsche fanatics. I've often thought about getting one but the horror stories of maintaining them have turned me off. Maybe one day when I've got the house paid off I might do it ;-)
When I first stared working, a bloke who rented one of the offices had a dark green 928... his comment: "lovely car, but it drinks more than Winston Churchill" ;)
For the record, at that time I had an ancient and rusted bloody Mitsubishi Colt (and not the fancy one) - lol

928s can actually be bought with relatively little money. If you're willing to work on the wiring and the interior you can find one for $10,000-15,000 or less if you try. My dad ended up selling his for $5,000. For what you're getting it's a major steal.

I had pictures of the 928 on my bedroom wall...and when it was featured in 'Risky Business' driven by Tom Cruise it was no.1 on my must own list. In my 20's I drove my first Porsche, a 944 and loved it everytime my boss asked me to move it. I never owned a 928 but still have a hidden desire to find myself a manual GTS..I just doubt it would ever live up to my expectations. Great video..it really took me back to the 80's 👍☺

True. It’s a connoisseur’s choice to be sure. Best not let the hooligans know. In my opinion, there are three brands/products that attract the least discerning suspects: Harleys (except the early flatheads and the 750XR), Rolex watches (except the early classics) and 911s (again, except the very early ones).
Each of them are fashion victim magnets that are, as a consequence, vastly overpriced and over hyped by trend followers.
We know that there are far superior motorcycles than Harleys of course. But there are even better cruisers.
A £100 Seiko is better than a Rolex. And a JLC or Zenith is a far superior Swiss alternative.
An Aston is better than any Porsche, but the 944 is definitely the best German contender.
This takes the award for one of the Best Porsche documentaries I have ever seen. It draws one in with its informative and visual fluidity. Fantastic work Gentlemen. This will leave one Reminiscing!.. Smiling!.. And wondering in the back of their minds, if there are actually some workable funds stored in a remote corner of their bank accounts.

One of the best vids I've seen from you guys. These versions of Porsches tend to be what keeps me looking at them to this day, has a lot to do with these cars. Great job, y'all, with my American ascent coming through. But, really, I just thoroughly enjoyed this vid.

I have a 924S, a regular 82 924, a 944 and a 951 ,I think my favorite is my 924s but I love this platform for having the most fun, and yes I drive one everyday 7 days a week rain, sleet, or shine, ,,,great video
It took me a long time to appreciate the transaxle Porsches as I was never a big fan of their aesthetics (with the exception of the 944 Turbo). This video has provided a great explanation of the models and given me an even greater appreciation of these models.
I have had a 928, a 1979 930,a new 944,a Targa 911 SC and a Red 911 SC Red I loved them all. Except for the 944 I bought them all used ,never going over $15,000. The best driving car was the 944. It was not fast but it did everything great. I had speed in the 930 Turbo and the 928 was a rocket for it's time but the 911 was the true iconic Porsche. In the early 1980s you could find them for $15,000 with low miles, The 930 Turbo was always out of control.It was a strange car. It had a European speedometer, no catalytic converters ,a 4 speed (That was a really bad idea) It had the Goose neck radio which always took your eyes away from what you were doing. I red lined it at 360 KPH which was crazy. The down pressure pushed the body all the way down to the bottom of the shocks and you had no control . I sold it two weeks later because I knew I would not live because it was a poor design. I lost two friends in 930s and Pelle Lindbergh died the same month. The Porsche of today is a very different beast and everyone should learn how to drive thies high powered cars,really. We have a track in Northern Connecticut called Lime Rock Race Track where you can go to the Skip Barber Racing School.When a 911 from the 1970s to the 1990s crashes it really makes a mess. Take it seriously,you can't just jump in the car, red line it and expect the car to keep you safe.Don't forget the engine is in the back except for the 928 and 944. The 911 can get lose on you very quickly and you won't know what to do when it gets out of control. Drive safe !!! Oh I forgot. When I needed shocks it was only $4000 ! Really.
I love these Porsches! Although I don't see myself driving one of these classics anytime soon, they're still a sight to behold.

Own a 968, truly a one of kind car. Also have new ones which are great but truly still drive the 968 and enjoy it!

I had a 944 when I lived in Germany, it's a great car that I miss to this day. I wasn't a Porsche fan before I owned that car, I was a Corvette fan until I drove one.
Great video! The story of these cars and Porsche itself shows the dichotomy of developing good cars versus developing cars that the market wants.
I'm glad to see that there are many others who love the 928 like I do. To date, that was the fastest car I've ever been in. It's also great to see new videos pop up with this car. Matt Farah did one recently and SaabKyle too. My biggest gripe about the 928 is that it has a timing belt. That has to be my least favorite maintenance item.

The 968 is cool, but i absolutely adore the 928, the car its styling based on. It's my favourite Porsche along with the modern cayman gt4. It's smooth and understated and won't look like an old car today if relaunched with porsche's new signature LEDs and modern wheels.
Porsche can make a killing if they redesign the Panamera as a two door gt/shooting brake along the lines of the GTC4 or F12. It'll obviously be easier to live with than a ferrari.
Your so right, my mums Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet in black would like brand new if it were fitted with new Porsche lights and wheels it would appear brand new
I owned a 924 back in the day and loved it for its handling. Mine had a noisy engine that overwhelmed any chance of listening to music while touring. With the sunroof open, airflow caught the rear edge of the roof and 'boomed' more often than I liked. My young sons loved it since they were still small enough to fit comfortably in what passed for rear seats.
I still have and drive my 924 grabs loads of attention.

This video was specifically on the front engine rear drive ones though. Otherwise the 914 would have been in here. The 959 was always one of my favorites as well, but that thing was closer to a super car than not being the worlds fastest production car at the time.
I heard once they 'outlawed' the 959 here in my country for engine exhaust reasons. Not sure if it's still true or not.
Absolutely sweet film! I was flooded with NFS Porsche Unleashed memories while watching this video. I remember how I drove the shit out of the 944 Turbo. And the 928, apart from those ugly pop-up lights, truly is a beautiful car! Timeless design. Still looking sharp today.
I had an 87 944S that was a lot of fun to drive. It was the first reliable sports car that I had. I now have a 370Z sport coupe that is also a lot of fun.
Owned the 944 S2 and always wanted the 968. Loved the 944 a truly fantastic car, I finally bought the daddy (911S) but have been harking after a 928 for a while.

Not many people have had experience in a 968, and I honestly wish more people have had a chance to ride in one if not drive it. It's simply fantastic, solidly built, and you really couldn't ask for anything more from it.
The problem is that they're quite rare, especially a coupé. I've only ever seen one 968 in person, and it was a cabriolet.

I own a 1989 944 turbo. The most exciting car I’ve ever owned and I’ve own a lot of sport cars over my 30 years of driving. I still feel the adrenaline rush when I punch the gas peddle.

2 PORSCHE in the 70`s that I found personally stunning before I ever saw a 911: the 914 & the beautifully lined 928!!!! I saw the the 928 in dec.,`78 in front of my house in Chicago 2wks before Christmas. It was silver w/NICOLLETTE LARSENs` GONNA TAKE A LOT OF LOVE blaring out of the sound system. It was lifes mission 2 aquire 1 when another car company stopped me in my tracks: That`s when I saw a LAMBORGHINI COUNTACH in feb., `82 while in my 1st yr in college & 1ve been "HOOKED"!!! by its horns ever since.

I love all these cars. But I always thought the 928 was something special, design wise. Other than the interior, which is quite dated, you could produce a 928 today and it would look modern. In fact, I saw a prototype 4 door 928 that looked quite a bit like the Panamera.

I have been lucky enough to own 2 928S4's. Not the quickest cars around town but get on the highway and thats when they show their incredible ability to destroy distance...but that was what they were made for!!
I've got a 968 Convertible... wish I could have gotten my hands on a Coupe, but they're very very rare here and impossible to import from anywhere else. All the same, I love it!
944, the fender flares that are second only to the first generation m3 in my opinion

NO! they are bigger than both the M3 and Lancia Integrale and the fastest version of the 944 was a much quicker car than either of those.

I've owned a turbo S and I still own my S2 3.0 and I'll take the S2 any day of the week. the massive torque from that big motor around town is unbeatable. The Turbo is quicker for sure on the highway, but I don't live day to day on the highway. The s2 is buttery smooth, quick, great torque down low, just a wonderful wonderful underrated car. So balanced, and solid even after 26 years. No squeaks, no rattles, just good old fashioned Porsche over engineering. The 968 is even better.

In 1986 I had both an 85 1/2 944 turbo and an 85 Carrrera .I still have the 911 , and as bad as I hate to admit it .the 944 turbo out performed my 911 in every way.
+1.. The 968 coupe as a daily driver is a nice pick... Signed, a MY87 944 coupe owner of ten years back in the day....until ordering our current MY98 993 C2S coupe....The 4cyl 944S2 and 968 coupes are great cars ...

Most English speaking people have no interest in learning pronunciation of other languages. French, German, Spanish - they either don't care or are unable to use the correct pronunciation. It's quite annoying for us that can speak several languages and know better.

I never realized how much the 924 looks like the Mazda RX-7 FB.
Desmond Teague the rx7 was made to compete with the 944 which is why styling is similar.
I also remember when a Magazine compared the Daytona with the 928 n even the Ferrari didn't have electronic ignition or fuel injection n it was also older pre-low profile tyres up to about 100 they where neck n neck almost once they reach over110 the Ferrari left the 928 for dead well almost, handling was better on the 928 someone i was working with had a 928 n told me to change the cam belt was an engine out job overall maybe the Best sports car for a not so rich bloke is a Lotus it also comes with supercar road holding wet or dry, another Great video guys thanks
Had a 1986 944 Turbo. Bulletproof reliable. Miss that car, but upgraded to a Cayman S and have never looked back. Pound for pound however my 951 was just as fast as my 930. Certainly easier to drive/handle. The 928S4 is a great investment right now if you can find one thats not roached out and high mileage. Mid 20s should get you a really nice one. Was a $75,000 new or the same price as a 930. They are way undervalued in the market. Look for them to reach original MSRP within 5-7yrs.
You guys forgot to mention the most important aspect of the 928 for us in America. They had an engine just for the U.S. that was a quad cam, four valves per cylinder, 8-cylinder, with 300 something horsepower. The baddest 928 ever made.

I love the 928,it helps to show what fantastic value G.M.'s F body cars and Ford's Mustang were,it also helps us visualise the phrase "ludicrously over priced",a small amount more for a gigantic premium.

Back in 2009 I had to decide which car I will buy as my first. Either the Bmw e46 2005 330d or the 92 (I think) 928. I bought the e46, still have it but only drive it on race tracks. I don't really regret the decision except that the 928 doubled the price since then...

I remember driving a 924 in the early 90s and wishing I was back in my Capri. Bloody awful. It felt heavy and gutless.

I owned a 85 944 I purchased because I loved my uncle's red 944, after a couple years I had a lot of issues with the charging system and vibrations from the motor mounts, which are like shocks. This was the major flaw with this car. my uncle had the same issues, so if your buying one have a mechanic check it out. I later bought a 1984 928s and drove the car 10 years with absolutely no problems by black on black 928 was stick , I have owned almost every sports car under the sun, my next purchase will be an s4, porsch-ah should keep this classic in the lineup. the 911 was always out of my reach as a younger man now that I could afford one I still lust after a 92 turbo widebody 911, but must admit...if I have 30 grand to through a Aston vantage roadster will take that place

I have driven a 924 a few times, the 968 is rare here in New Zealand, although the 928 is not an unusual sight here?
