I can agree with you on the arc blindness, years ago I and another guy where tack welding with a stick welder. One guy would set the parts in a jig and lock it down and the other had the helmet on and did the welding. We did this outside since we had hundreds of them to do and didn't want to keep arcing the other people in the shop. So we set-up outside and each took turn welding. We met later that night in the ER with both of us getting arc blindness. Saying the pain was bad would be putting it lightly. We both had our eyes covered for three days before we could remove the bandages and was in pain for a week, felt like sand in your eyes. It really does. And like you said it feels like sand in your eyes and there's nothing you can do about it. But I have found that putting potato slices over your eyes helps a lot.
I experienced ‘ark eye’ once when I was young, never again ! yes reflected ark eye is bad too. Carbide tools don’t like broken cutting they like a constant cut surface, they chip so easy and they like high speed which doesn’t work well on this application. Great to watch and learn , love the banter , ‘Michelle’ yeah good name and yeah he's a great guy it seems. :-)
Ugh welders flash is the worst! Glad you never had it again! Yep we got it figured out pretty good by the end of it all. Michelle is great! Couldn’t ask for better friends.
I've had burned eyes from welders assistant work and never looked at the arc. Miserable is a good description along with no sleep with another 12 hour shift the next day. Wore cutting glasses from then on...in fact i wore them watching this video!
good job on the boring! my set up is very similar, and i was going to offer it up to mike for use, but its all good....... you mentioned using hss for the interrupted cuts, you are exactly right, it is way more forgiving than carbide, you can cut at about twice the rotational speed of carbide and it can be dressed and sharpened on a regular grinding wheel, so there's no need to have a green wheel for the carbide. I too found a good source for carbide and hss as well, the one difference i did make to mu bar is that i have a second hole in the bar and a set of interior mics that i can lead ahead of the cutter. BUT Y'ALL DID AWESOME!
bvfdfire1 the bar you’re talking about is the exact kind that I was looking at getting if I end up having a setup of my own, it seems very well worth it. You can see this bar was custom made. Some of the holes aren’t broached all the way some are too much. Some of the set screw holes aren’t tapped well etc. but hey, it worked in the end hahaha.
@@JasonWorksAlot HEY IT WORKED OUT! THATS WHAT MATTERS, i actually just bored the broach holes true.500" round and got round by square adapter bushings, helped on two fronts, cost me less than broaching square holes, but also, i have a choice of using 1/4" to 1/2" cutters, and i can have a little bit of angle of attack adjustment on the lead in of the carbide...... btw, the silver shank carbides are primarily for cast iron and alloys, they wont last anytime with a rod or wire build up, and interrupted cut. I always had best luck with gold shank, AR8 and AL8 carbides. but as i said before, looks great and you got er done!!!!!!!
I think the main thing is make sure the boom is straight and square with the machine. Usually they'll be egg shaped in one area. Install a dummy bit and center the bar off that. Now days line boring is a very competitive business and in the field has to be done asap with no mistakes. Bore welders to getter done quick.
Looks like your bar is turning backwards! Or counter clockwise. I use carbides all the time. They'll cut when the tool steel won't. I've had to cut holes when other people did me a favor and welded them up for me, not! With duel shield 71M err! 7018 3/32" if by hand. Across the bore. When you start climbing vertical overlap the welds halfway. Like a long weave uphill. The slag will bind the welds make them smooth, don't chip slap it protects the welds from slag sticking to them. Start climbing up the bore weaving as you go. If done properly hit the slag with chipping hammer and all will fall off leaving a nice weld to cut out. Use tool steel for ruff cuts and take out the high spots. Use the carbides for finish cuts. Sharpen to a point then on the last grind gently round the end of the carbide, this will let you make the finish cuts smooth. So you will then get a good reading on your mike. Get a snap gauge that fits in your bar. Then you don't have to remove it everytime. Good luck!
The tool bit design you were using is intended for use in a boring bar in a lathe. I suggest you check out a TRG 6 883 and a TRE 6 883 tool bits. Also if you tap some threads in the hole the bit is inserted in you can thread in a set screw that will give you precise control of advancing the tool bit for depth of cut. looking forward to seeing more.
Hi Jason new sub. I was showed many years ago when you get welder flash put cut in half potato on each eye tie on lightly with cloth an sleep takes away sand feeling

Shrewd to get us to have to watch all two (soon to be three with Mr. Man Behind the Scenes) channels to get the full picture of everything that went into all the work you guys did on this project. I was watching most of the content on Dirt Perfect and wondered how you guys got the line bore and bearing carriers centered. Now I know …. micrometer-grade electrical tape. Guessing that’s the good stuff and not the Harbor Freight stuff. Posting a link for us mere mortals is appreciated.
Do you need to build up and bore the stick holes too or just the boom? Might have missed those videos if you did already. Thanks for pro-tip on helmet and second-hand welder’s flash.
Hey joe it’s regular electrical tape, anything will work as long as you’re wrapping it around a round spacer as you’re only looking to get very close. The new hole center can be off a little bit as long as it’s not cock-eyed won’t cause binding. Yep any of the holes we did, we welded them first. The proper way to do it would be to bore it oversize. Then weld it under size and then bore the weld to size. Guarantees that you get good metal to weld on free of impurities. But Aaron got excited and welded them up before I got there lol. Sorry for late reply never got notification of this comment.
Nice job guys!! Lot of patience there too!! One step closer to getting her tight and right.... but please tell me the bucket will be just as tight too???!!!🤑🤑

a some plate metal and some linear rails and a Bridgeport after market feed motor with a screw will let you have variable auto feed capabilities basicly a power fed sled your feed travel will be limited by the build and legth of the ball screw you choose
That interrupted cut will kill the insert a lower cost insertable would have been a huge improvement I never had much luck with those cemented or brazed inserts to inconsistent quality great job with the setup you had
Christopher Kalinowski yeah I like the indexable insert tooling on the lathe way more than anything else. But I’d have killed for a nice sharp hss tool there. But hey we couldn’t complain at all lol
If you get your eyes burned by arc flash, take an Irish potato and slice off a couple of pieces about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Scrape the flat surface with a knife to soften the insides of the potato. Lay down and place a slice over each eye and give it an hour or so to work. The starch in the potato will work wonders. It pulls the heat and moisture out of the blisters and takes the burn and redness out of your eyes.
Nice video Jason. I watch DP also so it's cool to see the cross over type stuff. But I will say, it would be cool to see how your deck is going and your other projects around home. That's the type of stuff I have on my channel except it's way more boring than yours since you know what you're doing! haha Keep up the good work.
Lee in the Woods ohhhhh no hahaha I’m clueless on that stuff haha just doing my best at it. I should have all the update videos done soon though. I need to put a solid weekend in to completely finish the deck. I’ve gotten away from it because it’s just detail work now and we’ve been using it as is. I’ll try to get that video out soon. Thanks for watching along I really appreciate it!
It’s a variable speed Milwaukee mag drill, with a custom machined chuck adaptor. Goes from Weldon shank to whatever your boring bar drive size is. Boring bars were just off the shelf bars, and the bearings are just vertical flange pillow block bearings. Hope this points you in the right direction.
Yes and no, you could sure and in a pinch that might work well. However you won’t be able to get a deep enough penetration on your weld to hold the bushing in place long term. The rotational force will eventually break it free and cause the bushing to spin around further egging out the original boss. Have seen it first hand more than once. Hope that makes sense. Sorry for the delay never got notified of comment :(
Charlie Tanner relying on the factory bore for that when we are putting the shin washers in we’re establishing as close to center as we can. Keep in mind You’re getting it as close as possible but ultimately making a new centerline by boring it out.
casy casy haha thats right we need to guilt him into it! And it wasn’t any special wire per say. I do forget the exact wire code off the top of my head but we looked up specs and it was just a touch harder than 7018 so we figured it would be fine. If I can remember the wire code I’ll add it on here later
I was wondering how you controlled the feed rate... I guess that's how lol! 19:28 Is that a super hole shooter you've got in your hands there? Looks like it gets the job done! Thanks for the video!
I have to order prescription safety glasses and safety sun glasses every other year to work at a couple of my customers' facilities. Good PPE ain't cheap, but a pain in the wallet hurts a whole lot less than debris in the eyeball. Learned that one the hard way by not having the side shields on my glasses.
@@JasonWorksAlot For stuff at home I'll just wear my contacts & regular safety glasses (ain't the brightest idea I'll admit). I do like those 3M ones, but my favorites (for outdoor work anyway) are the Bolle safety sun glasses.

well i must say. my life time working in a huge logging camp for a paper mull all my life as a welder, i worked a long side a machinist that was contracted out to come to the camps to do all the line boring on booms an center joints. never did we build up a pin boss with weld then line bore it, it was always one of 2 ways, if the pin boss was ware out really bad, the old ones were air arced off and new ones welded in, then line bored.. and pin boss's that were not bad, they were line bored over size and a hardened sleeve pressed in with a porta power, then i welded the ends of the sleeves so they never move, i asked the machinist in my early years, why we dont build them up with weld, he told me, doing it that way would never last long due to the extrema heat doing such thing, and the weld is softer metal then a herded sleeve hydraulically pressed in, i cut out hundreds of pin boss's and welded new ones in and then line bored for perfect fit, he used steel cones to line up the boring bar, boy, you do a lot of complaining about something you got to use free, if it was me that lender it to you, and i heard all this complaining, it would be the last time i ever lend ya anything.., well seeing the last clip, that pin went in way to loss, no resistance at all, not how i have seen thousands of fits, as i worked a long side this guy on every job he came out to do, as i had to weld his braces and every thing he needed, he is dead now, as most old timer great machinist
kb7722 no, Michelle has that tv on and we have no idea where the remote is. Pretty sure he’s got no clue where it is either to be honest. Never paid attention to it once hahaha

Years ago when I took the training to be the certified safety rep at work, one of the other people in the course said he didn’t trust auto darkening welding helmets. His reasoning being that how fast of a darkening reaction does it truly take to not cause any damage to your eyes. It was really a moment to make you think 🤔 Auto darkening helmets were still relatively new and apparently gimmicky to some. 25 years later and auto darkening helmets are the norm in the industry and are definitely much better than back then but you still can wonder how much cumulative damage can be caused by catching arc flash 4 m/s at a time.
Wayne Crews a solid point for sure, and one ive looked into myself at a decent length too. I run my miller on its sensing mode, it detects the magnetic field of the welder generating current and darkens before the arc even strikes... or so the pamphlet says hahaha i will say ive used the cheap masks, and have had many severe headaches after long use, ive never had one after hours of welding with my digital elite helmet... love that thing!
JasonWorksAlot I remember early helmets measuring in milliseconds (1/1000) and now they advertise at 1/10000 to 1/30000 of a second and I wouldn’t be surprised to hear faster. Sounds like your Miller will darken before the arc flash. 😉
Wayne Crews ... one thing we learned with our mechanics welding with conventional helmets was, their reaction time between arc strike and helmet down was not very quick or reliable. Cumulatively, the auto darken helmets provided much better protection and ultimately better welds.
You did well with what you had. Those carbides come in different grades and can be shaped to different configurations similar to high speed steel but requires a special grinding wheel and you have to be careful to not overheat the carbide or it melts the silver solder under the carbide. With the correct tool geometry Two tool bits would have done the complete job and the finsh like a mirror but that takes years of experience from a patriarchal machinist.
Paal Rhinehart so you would say it takes a little longer than 3 or 4 hours of trial and error?? haha, I'm intrigued to eventually learn to sharpen carbide tooling, I bought a surface grinder a few years ago to make some valve shims, havent had a chance to touch it since though... its on my short list!
I'd agree about the grades. Those inserts are cheap for a reason. I wonder if HSS would be effective on that weld. It tends to be super hard. I'm just a hobbyist so don't listen to me for real info!
Travis Macie I’ve had luck with hss machining weld before. But as you said. Very limited hobbies experience so I fully submit I know little to nothing and work mostly with trial and error 😊

William King haha people got tired of hearing it, and quite honestly I was getting tired of doing it. Made a lot of situations difficult, my good friend that helps me all the time thought it was dumb, so I tried to avoid doing it when he was helping, which basically meant 90% of what I wanted to film I had to either voice over, make silent, or not film all together. I didn’t like doing it out in public, it’s bad enough talking to a camera much less in a lousy russian accent, I didn’t want anyone to think I was making fun or trying to be hurtful, it was always meant to be a harmless joke, and the biggest reason was that it made everything really hard for me to explain. If I was trying to shoot a some what serious video with technical aspects I was trying to explain it was near impossible to keep my train of thought while maintaining the accent. So away it went.
and only 3 days after he posted his first video witout the russian accent, his subscriber number had gone up by over 250 new subscribers. I don't think he every gained that many new viewers in one video before that. ;)

M ES I’m glad I’m not the only one who will look away from a welding arc on a screen because it’s second nature hahah
good job on the boring! my set up is very similar, and i was going to offer it up to mike for use, but its all good....... you mentioned using hss for the interrupted cuts, you are exactly right, it is way more forgiving than carbide, you can cut at about twice the rotational speed of carbide and it can be dressed and sharpened on a regular grinding wheel, so there's no need to have a green wheel for the carbide.
Good luck!

Job well done, had flash burn myself and it stinks. Love the videos.
dwayne morrow thank ya kindly! It sucks don’t it!
@@JasonWorksAlot Yes sir it does.

Strange how so much work gets done when Dirt Perfect is not around, kind of makes you wonder!😂😂

But Aaron got excited and welded them up before I got there lol.

a some plate metal and some linear rails and a Bridgeport after market feed motor with a screw will let you have variable auto feed capabilities basicly a power fed sled your feed travel will be limited by the build and legth of the ball screw you choose
Great job, now if Mike keeps it greased! lol
Man With A Plan haha I think he will. Atleast he better
@@JasonWorksAlot that must have been something to get the feel for to get the feed rate somewhat consistent
Thanks for watching along I really appreciate it!
Any links or info to where/how we can make or get ahold of a line bore setup like this?
It’s a variable speed Milwaukee mag drill, with a custom machined chuck adaptor. Goes from
Weldon shank to whatever your boring bar drive size is. Boring bars were just off the shelf bars, and the bearings are just vertical flange pillow block bearings. Hope this points you in the right direction.
Could you just bore out the original hole and then just Weld in a machined to size bushing to fit the pin?
Yes and no, you could sure and in a pinch that might work well. However you won’t be able to get a deep enough penetration on your weld to hold the bushing in place long term. The rotational force will eventually break it free and cause the bushing to spin around further egging out the original boss. Have seen it first hand more than once.
Hope that makes sense. Sorry for the delay never got notified of comment :(
AvE has a video where he tests glasses and helmets for UV and whatnot. It's a very good watch.

how do you get a straight alignment one side to the other
Charlie Tanner relying on the factory bore for that when we are putting the shin washers in we’re establishing as close to center as we can. Keep in mind You’re getting it as close as possible but ultimately making a new centerline by boring it out.
ok aron now has to make some videos .im signed up # 56 you guys did great.did you have to have special rod or is it just normal rod
casy casy haha thats right we need to guilt him into it! And it wasn’t any special wire per say. If I can remember the wire code I’ll add it on here later
Nothing wrong with that would agree with you though on using high speed steel cutters first for cut.
barry hansen would have been nice for sure but in the end, do what you can with what ya got... as usual it seems for me lol

Been there with bad burn from being in a white room.
well i must say. my life time working in a huge logging camp for a paper mull all my life as a welder, i worked a long side a machinist that was contracted out to come to the camps to do all the line boring on booms an center joints. never did we build up a pin boss with weld then line bore it, it was always one of 2 ways, if the pin boss was ware out really bad, the old ones were air arced off and new ones welded in, then line bored.. and pin boss's that were not bad, they were line bored over size and a hardened sleeve pressed in with a porta power, then i welded the ends of the sleeves so they never move, i asked the machinist in my early years, why we dont build them up with weld, he told me, doing it that way would never last long due to the extrema heat doing such thing, and the weld is softer metal then a herded sleeve hydraulically pressed in, i cut out hundreds of pin boss's and welded new ones in and then line bored for perfect fit, he used steel cones to line up the boring bar, boy, you do a lot of complaining about something you got to use free, if it was me that lender it to you, and i heard all this complaining, it would be the last time i ever lend ya anything.., well seeing the last clip, that pin went in way to loss, no resistance at all, not how i have seen thousands of fits, as i worked a long side this guy on every job he came out to do, as i had to weld his braces and every thing he needed, he is dead now, as most old timer great machinist
Did you ever hard face any of the Skidder plows?

I can't blame MBTS one tiny bit for not wanting to roll around on the floor with all that poky stuff.
😂😂 right
Years ago when I took the training to be the certified safety rep at work, one of the other people in the course said he didn’t trust auto darkening welding helmets. His reasoning being that how fast of a darkening reaction does it truly take to not cause any damage to your eyes. It was really a moment to make you think 🤔
Auto darkening helmets were still relatively new and apparently gimmicky to some.
JasonWorksAlot
I remember early helmets measuring in milliseconds (1/1000) and now they advertise at 1/10000 to 1/30000 of a second and I wouldn’t be surprised to hear faster.
Sounds like your Miller will darken before the arc flash. 😉
Wayne Crews as long as the batteries are good! Ask me how I know🙄
Wayne Crews ... one thing we learned with our mechanics welding with conventional helmets was, their reaction time between arc strike and helmet down was not very quick or reliable. Cumulatively, the auto darken helmets provided much better protection and ultimately better welds.
Arc eye is something you don’t want.. good advice 👍

Paal Rhinehart
so you would say it takes a little longer than 3 or 4 hours of trial and error?? haha, I'm intrigued to eventually learn to sharpen carbide tooling, I bought a surface grinder a few years ago to make some valve shims, havent had a chance to touch it since though... its on my short list!
@@JasonWorksAlot Trial, error and TH-cam videos! Of course there are so many variables with the weld filler material and the type of HSS used as well.
