Japanese Wordplay in Komi Can’t Communicate, Explained.

  • Over the last year, I’ve become a huge fan of the anime/manga Komi Can’t Communicate. And one of my favorite things about this wholesome comedy anime about people with different types of social anxieties and neuroses…is that every character in the series has a pun-ny name referencing their main personality quirk. Unfortunately, Japanese wordplay doesn’t translate well to English. So, here is every single one of those Japanese name puns, explained!
If you like my videos, please consider supporting me here: ko-fi.com/andr...
    (Thanks!!)
I’m only covering the characters that have been introduced in the anime so far (as of the upload date of this video). So, no characters from Komi-san’s second year of high school or beyond. Maybe in the future I’ll make a sequel video covering the characters introduced later on.
This video is rather late compared to when most people were watching and talking about this show, haha. Full disclosure: I actually started doing the research for this back in Spring, but I didn't get a chance to actually put the video together until recently.

    EXTRA NOTES:
I realized that Gorimi-senpai’s name may also come from the onomatopoiea ゴリゴリ (gori-gori) which can mean forceful, uncompromising, or hardcore - which I think are all good adjectives to describe her.
Shousuke(笑介), Komi-san’s brother, has the kanji 笑 (shou) in his name, which means smile. This may be an intentional joke because he never really smiles.
Feel free to add more notes in the replies!

So, I remember reading that the reason Komi’s dad and uncle are named Masayoshi and Sadayoshi, respectively, is because in the manga, they are introduced with the sentences “Masayoshi. Sadayoshi. Nakayoshi.”, or in other words, “Masayoshi. Sadayoshi. They get along well.”, so I’m guessing it was just for the sake of wordplay.

I already knew every character had a name related to their gimmick or personality, but didn't know about the actual meanings of them, so as someone that is starting to learn Japanese I appreciate this video c:

Feel like the title could've been adapted as Can't Komiunicate.

For Ushiroda, the "kage" could also refer to 影が薄い (kage ga usui), which means she has "little presence".

for all of the characters whose backstory isn’t revealed because of their names (or were from the manga), i’ll introduce them.
Tadano Jeanne- Hitohito’s mother is the only character whose name is foreign than the other characters. “Tadano Jeanne” can be translated to “Tadano Jan’nu” which is a puny reference to the word “Jan’na” which roughly means “not normal”.
Katai Ai- Makoto’s sister named like that because of her personality and style, being a sweet girl on the inside while looking like a tough girl on the outside (her name might be a reference to her affection towards Shousuke).
Rami Kawai- Kawai’s name is reference to the word “kawaii”, which means “cute and adorable”, that only applies to her appearance.
Ase Shibuki- Ase’s name is a homonym for the phrase “sweat droplets”, because of her sweating excessively.
Isagi Kiyoko- Isagi’s name is a translation for the words “pure and clean” and “clear (Kiyo) child (ko)”
Emoyama Yuragi- her name is a pun to the word “emo”, same with her personality being emo.
(2 characters are confirmed to appear in Season 3, being Ase and Emoyama, who were both beside Komi in the end of Season 2.)

7:05 “the next character never gets any lines but her name is kishi himeko.”
In episode 11 of the anime she responds to shinobino’s film idea by saying “hold on, if we’re making a movie it should be about a medieval kingdom.”

If you also do research into Najimi’s name origin, you see that it’s actually a gender-neutral name that’s simply uncommon in modern society! Used for both men and women, which is fitting for the seemingly gender-fluid (hc) character.
