Something that I really like about Tadano is that although he's painted to be average in so many things, his ability to understand others and treat them with respect and empathy is a really exceptional quality of his. Imo, this is great for two reasons. One, it parodies the often bland protagonist in shows like this. The girls fall head over heels over one dude who's often pretty boring. Supposedly, for relatability. Tadano is great because he's relatable in so many ways like you mentioned but also really makes his relationship with Komi platonic or romantic way more believable and interesting. And two, it's quite amazing. The show paints him as average but he has some exceptional qualities that, when seen, makes people connect with him. Isn't that how real connections are formed. A lot of our traits may be average, slightly above or slightly below. But, we have some traits that our loved ones find exceptional. Basically, Chadano parodies the standard protagonist in these kinds of shows by being painted as average but being a pretty exceptional guy in some aspects which makes him more relatable, the show funnier and more believable as well. It also reminds us that even the most seemingly average person has some exceptional qualities of their own, waiting to be discovered by them or others.
I didn't think of him through the lens of other shonen protagonists but I can see that. I can't wait for more of the manga to get animated, so people can really see the superhuman power of observation Tadano has. It's to the point where he can seemingly read characters minds at times, which leads to some very comedic moments with the quiet characters. That character trait also quite literally drives the entire story when you think about it because if Tadono had never noticed Komi has a communication disorder, she would have likely not talked with anyone, just like in middle school. It seems that everyone else had either given up on communicating with her or couldn't figure out what her problem was because they put her on a pedestal.
One of my best friends doesn’t like romance anime at all, but I made him watch a few episodes with me, & it ended up being a part of our weekly routine. We finished Season 2 last month & he told me how much he loved it.
It’s a great looking show and the voice acting is spot on so far. The voice actor for Najimi is perfect. I love all the side and background characters so much, my favourite is the home room teacher. I’m so glad it’s doing the manga justice 👍✨
I loved this anime. I have GAD and it never switches off. I could relate to Komi a little bit, but nobody has ever looked up to me as being cool like they do Komi. How she reacts to people talking to her and panicking is relatable. Also, how others respond to her when she tries to communicate is relatable, Komi analysing others face and body language and assuming the worst.
As someone who suffers from pretty bad social anxiety to the point where I’m always alone at school, I appreciated it’s take on it and how it showed Komi dealing with it throughout the anime. It really helped me understand and feel that I wasn’t alone.
Manga is great too and has nice art still too. Definitely see her growth and she’s shown to stand up for herself and others and understand people better over time

If you watch this, the FanSubs might be a better way to go, the Netflix subtitles don't translate all the text that Komi and co write down all the time, and because of that you do miss little tiny jokes or moments here or there. By all means please support Netflix's algorithms for this anime and we hopefully get a season 2 soon, but they need to up their game in the subtitles department.
Komi and her struggles are so relatable to those who have social anxiety. The writers actually took the time to get inside the heads of people with social anxiety, not just someone pretending what it would be like to have it. Many times in the show reminds me of similar incidents in my own history, albeit from a guy's perspective.
Osana is probably the only decent written gender bender character that I’ve ever seen. Osana is a three dimensional character and not just an over the top character that is only written in to check a box.

Honestly, as popular as this anime is on both sides of the Pacific pond, I think this anime is overrated like Clannad and Toradora. I have Autism and had social anxiety, but I didn't have trouble with improving on basic encounters compared to TWO seasons with Komi. You would have thought by now she had gotten better with it compared to another anime. Also, the pacing is off, the other characters were okay to cringy, most of the humor were misses and, as someone who loves anime pretty close to the manga, I admit this anime is near-literally TOO close to the manga (as mindblowing as that is! ROFL!!!)! Don't get me wrong, this anime does a good job with representing social anxiety, but I recommend watching Hitoribocchi no Marumaruseikatsu and even Say "I Love You" over this. And besides, Cannonballin' [Crullers] coffee >>> CHARbakes/BURNTbakes coffee!!! XD

Sadly the humour of this show doesn't quite work for me, the 'frenzied' comedy can often ham things up too much, taking me out of the series. Things like Agari Himiko jumping to being Komi's dog can feel rushed because they were too keen to get to the punchline that she is a masochist without doing enough to really build to this conclusion. I typically vibe a lot more with the less abrasive shows Hitori Bocchi or Senryuu Girl, their comedy places a lot more focus on the socially awkward lead's expectations crashing headlong into reality rather than reality giving us quirky pet play, yanderes and petty/vindictive classmates to fuel the humour. Though I am not sure if it's just a matter of the tone, Komi San isn't really all that unique, there's plenty of slice of life shows out there and I feel that shows like Handa-Kun and Sakamoto Desu Ga manage to also be quite over the top whilst having a lot more connective tissue. Handa kun will dedicate an episode to flesh out characters like 'Eraser girl', establishing her as the resident yandere of the series. Komi San on the other hand will shadow Agari Himiko for a while, then spontaneously make her Komi's dog and then will quickly move on to something else (classroom games). Of all the slice of life shows out there, Komi is very much the classroom goddess. She just shows up, she's pretty, and therefore people heap praise upon her. Though personally my heart doesn't belong to just a pretty face, I fall in love with shows that can be melodramatic like Sakamoto, so misunderstood like Handa or so studious and quirky like Hitori.
The show is pretty cute but I wish it was more… idk, toned down? I think it would be much more appealing to me if it were more relaxed. Anytime komi does literally anything the music starts swelling and the framing and composition are so melodramatic you’d think the biggest revelation in anime history is about to happen and these moments occur what feels like every couple minutes which I feel takes some of the wind out of actual emotionally heightened moments
If that's how you feel you should check out the manga. There is obviously no music so it has a more relaxing feel to it with an intimate look into the characters lives. It is dialogue heavy most of the time but the author is very good at portraying information visually with just facial expressions and the artwork in each panel. He occasionally has several pages or entire chapters without any dialogue. I think this is one of the very few stories I've seen that is a better experience in comic form instead of animated form because the artwork is better and most scenes don't really need to the animated to fully appreciate them. If this was an action heavy series I would choose a decent anime adaption any time but for a Rom Com it's kind of overkill.
