Ah Mr. Dave.... He played at a festival I produced in Durango CO in 2004 along with a lot of other great artists. He is the master of anything with a string on it... He also knows how to keep marauding hotel maids away from his hotel room while on tour by tapeing a lobster claw to the hotel room door with a sign that says "DON"T F*#@ with the CLAW! This is a great video. Gonna add it as a favorite. Thanks
Just saw him on 1/20/11 at the El Rey in Chico, CA and he was mind boggling! The third time I'd seem him and he seems to get better every time. he has done a lot of session work for other musicians from Dolly Parton to Bob Dylan, etc. A friend of mine introduced me to him about twenty years ago. Wish I had known about him sooner. He is so incredibly unique with a capital "U"!!!
There is no guitar god only his Angels and one of them is right about this. Seen David in 85 and the power went out, he went into overdrive for 15 minutes on his acoustic like he had to make up for us not hearing his band. Praise they.
wowser...heard him do "way out west in Kansas" on NPR mountain stage and was hooked big time...wonderful...hes like a one man orchestra...such a full sound..thanks for posting...great player....
Oh, my goodness. I first encountered this guy two days ago, while I was looking for Ry Cooder clips. This is amazing. I thought Cooder and Clapton were great, but this Lindley guy is in the same class as Andres Segovia! I think the reason he never got more notice is because he has a very individualistic choice of music he wants to play. Cooder and Clapton are more mainstream blues players, but Lindley seems to go for older stuff, as well as blues
Anyone who respects Lindley knows this real musician - although he's not exactly unnoticed. Many famous players cite Lindley as one of their main influences of all time ... plus you can meet Lindley after most of his shows as he's the coolest, most approachable guy you can imagine ..
The song is called "The State of Arkansas". I think there's another full version available on TH-cam; if not, try another site. You tube probably won't let me post the site name or a direct link, but there is a site that rhymes with haste or waste that has a bunch of Lindley and Lindley/Cooder videos and audio recordings.
Saw him at The Calvin with acoustic Hot Tuna a couple of years ago and with Jackson Brown at the Springfield Civic Center back in the 70's. Makes it sound like a sitar.
Song called "The State Of Arkansas" He used to play it on banjo. I bet it was good. Here is a fragment of a fantastic oud solo sadly curtailed. I remember Kaleidoscope.
The human soul, shining for all to see, true on stage of humble wood. The wooden vessel, the soul communing with the soul of the humble vessel of wood, and the simple communion of the wooden stage. Simple song of the east, touching simple song of the west, touching east again, the simple song of the observer in the ear of the observed, in the ear of the observer, observed. Song in time, dissolving time, space, east, west, stage, vessel, into soul.
I'm with you ironbuttermilk. It seems like the people who go to these festivals just go for an excuse to get wasted, and have no respect for the performers. What a shame.
this is one of those rare musicians that doesn't need a strong voice to perform a masterpiece... he makes guys like dylan, and nelson look like amateurs that belong on youtube posting there own videos
@MadJohnEscapes Jimmy Page has definitely been quoted as saying that Kaleidoscope was his favorite band! not sure, but he may have even said that DL was his favorite guitarist !!
@MadJohnEscapes That's the case with many great so-called un-noticed musicians....Lindley's got an audience, that's more than can be said of many who plough a lonely furrow; it's all ok....don't fret.
We all miss him so. Can anyone tell what style of bouzouki this is? I have 2 standard bouzouki's with Sunrise PU's (wonder where I got that idea?) This one baffles me... The odd fret spacing. Is there a name for this style.... or is something other than a bouzouki? Thanks in advance for help!
It looks very much like a custom made instrument, basically an Irish bouzouki but with microtonal frets like a Turkish saz. Earlier on David used to play a real saz on certain tunes. My guess is he might have got this hybrid because it was less sensitive to temperature and climate changes. The original saz has wooden tuners which can be a hassle to keep in tune.
Boy, I know that's a bouzouki and all, but why the frets looks like this? Does anyone know if that's something with the scale, harmonics or any other stuff?
It looks like a sort of Buzuki. Extra frets are for microtones, I guess. Something like old keyboard instruments where black keys were separated in two, so that (say) G-sharp and A-flat are not the same. I've seen guitar fretboards like this.
what's the songs name? sounds like a dylan song, doesn't it? and what kind of lsd-trips did they swallow in the sixties. purple haze???? seems like that stuff still works in the brain...
@MadJohnEscapes Clapton is over rated. I hate to say it but since he got sober his music has grown boring. Angst & suffering are the roots of great art. He has lost it. Lindley is a musician's musician & a Troubadour. He travels the globe in poleyester & patent leather shoes.
He was spectacular. Grateful for all he created and these treasures left in his wake💪✨❤️🕊🌎
Ages ago I made mp3 from the video. Still listen to that masterpiece, can not believe it is 11 years already.

Definitely the Yoda of the guitar world, and I mean that in a good way. Raise a glass!
David Lindley is immeasurable perfection on any stringed instrument that falls into his hands. Listen and learn from a true master player.
No Doubt!
Agree,. his a great musican :)

On my old vinyl or modern cd's the man's vocals , instrumental's are one of a kind !!
If you get the chance, be sure to see him in concert! His talent and stories are not to be missed.
There is no guitar god only his Angels and one of them is right about this. Seen David in 85 and the power went out, he went into overdrive for 15 minutes on his acoustic like he had to make up for us not hearing his band. Praise they.
I saw him last night is Agoura Hills. Excellent, as always and in a very good mood and very talkative. A real treat.
I never heard of this guy . Why not ? He rocks.
He's got a whole house full of custom made and historic instruments...and he plays 'em all

Bear in mind Lindley is responsible for all those tasty lap steel parts in those Jackson Browne and Warren Zevon songs we all know.
stunning stuff, just stunning
Always a treat. Love him with Jackson.
Very enjoyable viewing. Thanks!
awesome..from the very best talent alive in the music industry.

Nice shirt, Mr Dave!......Looks like he should be sitting on a giant Amanita.
Definitely one of my heroes.
Svinging ewry culture in the world at the same time WOW.
Just awesome!

Saw him at The Calvin with acoustic Hot Tuna a couple of years ago and with Jackson Brown at the Springfield Civic Center back in the 70's.
Makes it sound like a sitar.

I wish I would have
had David`s right hand !
EXCELLENT!!!!!!!! ROCK ON!!!!!!!!!!
so cool so perfect : )
I've always loved this guy and you're right, i b. Why can't everyone just SHUT UP? The sound was still exceptionally good.
Magique!

1:38 is SOOOO GOOOD !!!
I'm with you ironbuttermilk. It seems like the people who go to these festivals just go for an excuse to get wasted, and have no respect for the performers. What a shame.
this is the best version i heard from David him self or any other. To bad he did not sing the hole song, would have been epic.
Es magnifico en escena david
this particular song isn't has hard as it looks it's all modes but generally this guy is one of the session GREATS!
If its got strings, David Lindley can play it masterfully rip sting master.
this is one of those rare musicians that doesn't need a strong voice to perform a masterpiece... he makes guys like dylan, and nelson look like amateurs that belong on youtube posting there own videos
WOOOOO dont ya mean fuck yeah!
This guy is cool looking.
what a great comment......Wilkins Micawber plays obscure stringed instrument
@MadJohnEscapes Jimmy Page has definitely been quoted as saying that Kaleidoscope was his favorite band! not sure, but he may have even said that DL was his favorite guitarist !!
oh just lovely :) What with the fret pattern on this instrument, surely not std for a bazouki ?
Good demon!
Eastern scale (like on a Saz)--gives you access to semi-tones.
@MadJohnEscapes That's the case with many great so-called un-noticed musicians....Lindley's got an audience, that's more than can be said of many who plough a lonely furrow; it's all ok....don't fret.
@MadJohnEscapes Page and Clapton can go to school on Lindley ! FTW !
I,m sure Friz is looking in and having a great time.
Gut ist gut
exelente
WHAT KIND OF SNARE INSTRUMENT IS HE PLAYING ??
An oud
We all miss him so. Can anyone tell what style of bouzouki this is? I have 2 standard bouzouki's with Sunrise PU's (wonder where I got that idea?) This one baffles me... The odd fret spacing. Is there a name for this style.... or is something other than a bouzouki? Thanks in advance for help!

I always wondered why when David was alive do a stage performance with Robert Plant .
The first part of this video should be called..................Yo dude move your BIG HEAD!
@ironbuttermilk
couldnt say it better myself,
Boy, I know that's a bouzouki and all, but why the frets looks like this? Does anyone know if that's something with the scale, harmonics or any other stuff?

The State of Arkansas
@ironbuttermilk Spoken like Hunter S Thompson. Imagine the poor folks sitting next to em.
nice sideburns.
Name of the song please ?
He's not playing a guitar. He's playing a flat-back bouzouki.
Amazing Playing and Player...!!!! But Guys this is NOT A BOYZOYKI i WISH I KNEW WHAT IT IS!!!!
It looks like a sort of Buzuki. Extra frets are for microtones, I guess. Something like old keyboard instruments where black keys were separated in two, so that (say) G-sharp and A-flat are not the same. I've seen guitar fretboards like this.
How you get this sound?
What is the name of the song he starts singing around 2.50?
The song is "The State of Arkansas".
What kind of instrument is that exactly?
well okay that's different
who is this old woman?
IRISH BOUZOUKI
@Michateller The only thing that you got going for you is running off at the mouth! Prove that you can even play one chord on the guitar you imp!
what's the songs name? sounds like a dylan song, doesn't it? and what kind of lsd-trips did they swallow in the sixties. purple haze???? seems like that stuff still works in the brain...
It's Not A Guitar... It's A Bouzouki.
Kopf weg
