David Lindley - a cultural bridge, an ambassador for cooperation in the field of music. Brought much joy and elation to so many. Heartful condolences to His Circle. We will miss you, yet your memory to be a blessing. So glad to have experienced you live several times, in the Pacific Northwest Coastal environs, on some notable stages. Peace Be Yours.
Got to see him live back in the El Rayo X days at Avila Beach... love his music...weaving middle eastern music with Appalachia is cool. Makes ya' wonder how talent is doled out by our creator. David got a ton.
Saw him at Calaveras I think with El Rayo X . 87 , foothills of California. Or maybe Laguna Seca , foggy memories. Wish I would have known then what I know now . Would have paid more attention.
Mitch, " Pretty Polly" was based on an infamous true story of a pregnant woman murdered by her sailor boyfriend in Gosport, England in 1727. Yes, 1727. Originally known as " The Gosport Tragedy". The ending heard here, where Polly kills her intended murderer, may be Lindley's own invention. If you google "Pretty Polly song origin" you can find lots of historical information about the newspaper coverage of the murder, and the evolution of the song.
dreadful. great player, but the machine is already on an amp, which horribly distorts the harmonics and timber, then two more mikes. just play electric guitar and be done with it.
If there actually was a hell, folk music "purists" should be transported to the Newport Folk Festival to hear Dylan go electric ---- forever. "Because that's what hell is, Robbie: *repetition*".😁
Beautiful music, beautiful person.
We lost a legend today. :(
🙏💙 Rest In Peace Sir 💙🙏 'Mr Dave' An incredible musician.
He will be 'Mr. Dave' for me forever.

Rest in peace, mighty David.
Just when you think American folk is dying this comes our way. What an incredible take on the late great Doc Boggs. Thank you Maestro Lindley.
Pretty Polly is a 300 year old song.
@@bean-spiller , yup, based on the "Gosport incident", well publicized at the time, about a sailor who murdered his pregnant girlfriend.
It's actually spelled Dock, Dock Boggs.
I suggest you listen to Matt Heckler. And other people who appeard on "Gems on VHS" and "Western AF".
@@goodun2974 Thank you for Information

what is the tuning ??????????????
Who loves Pretty Polly ;}
Whoa, so amazing! What instrument is this?
Rose, I believe it is a bouzouki.
What´s that instrument ? The frets on the neck make me think about an electric turkish Saz...
It's a modified Irish Bouzouki and you are correct: the frets are adjusted to match those on Saz.
@@denisborzov8406 Thanks man
Does Polly survive in any traditional versions or is this just his own take on it?
Stanley Brothers' version sounds (to me) like something close to traditional. There's also a version by Dock Boggs on YT.

Octave mandolin? What's the tuning?
i think it is most likely an irish bouzouki but it has quartertone frets so it must either have been modified or be some instrument i do not know of
you are correct, some of the frets were removed to accommodate dulcimer spacing @@QerstyBass
Doya Doya the ANADOLU(anatolia)
A friend of mine used to call Mr. Dave "Middle Eastern country music". He certainly has adopted a lot of Turkish spirit.
interesting instrument... could someone tell me the name?
It looks a bit like an Irish Bouzouki, but I'm no expert... I, too would love to know what it actually is.
@@kevintoomey2171 It´s shure not a Irish Bouzouki.
Kinda looks like an irish mandoli???
Irish Bouzouki with Middle Eastern frets
Trinity College Irish Bouzouki, I have one. Looks like some frets were removed to get dulcimer spacing that's all.
