- A really big job if I had all the time in the world to do it. However, it came in on Thursday evening and needed to be finished by Monday Afternoon. No problem, right?

This is my guitar! Very pleased with the outcome. Plays and sounds so good. Guitar was originally owned by Everet Rice, (no relation to Tony). He played with the Rice Family Band in the 50's and 60's. His brother and sister were singers and they made it to the Opry stage. Everet played with many, many country bands through the 80's and 90's and made it to the Wisconsin String Museum Hall of Fame (which doesn't even exist any more). His brother Bobby G. Rice had a gold record with "You Lay so Easy on My Mind". Not all that cool, but still cool to know some history of the instrument. If you have a chance to visit Jerry and Emeri at the farm, do so. Great people who've inspired me to start my own channel fixing bikes!

Jerry its' Heli-Coil and it's a fantastic thread insert used in the correct way. Use em in my work and private for over 35 years.

It's Helicoil. I've installed hundreds of them into racks made of aircraft aluminum. If the tapped threads they feed into are even the least bit wrong . . . bad. If the tang is broken off too short or without the right angle . . . bad. They're not meant for "adjustment" type situations, they're meant to protect the aluminum from weight bearing steel bolts causing the threads to deform.
For an adjustment screw, I'd drill it out and put in a plug with a T bar to keep it from turning, then drill and tap it to match the adjustment screw.

Absolutely awesome. You have a lot of internet experts telling you the right way to do everything. I think everyone doing that needs to share a link to video showing them in all their perfection and glory with us so we can see their brilliance in action. And like you we should be able to see their faces names, addresses and contact information.

Hey Jerry, when I need very fine adjustment for a router base or saw sled w/o a fine adjuster, I add a layer or two of tape to the base, the guide rails, or both. Much easier than.fighting with a spring loaded plunge base etc

I have those same black and blue Kolbalt scissors. Those are heavy duty.
Heli-Coil. Sometimes the magic works, sometimes it doesn’t.
Helix like DNA. Coil as in coil spring.....heli-coil.....They have to be staked in properly so they don't back out. A good red or green loctight on the coil would help then chase with a tap for the bolt size. Never seize the bolt and you shouldn't have any trouble......but, I agree, If possible, a larger bolt tapped in virgin metal is best.
That bridge looks like it originally may have had an ABR1 fitted , i remember seeing some acoustics with those fitted
Jerry , wow, you need a ghost writer to write a book on your repair techniques ! My Hummingbird had a damaged bridge plate. The local repair guy ( like you , he builds and repairs and is Martin certified) said unintentional damage could occur to get the plate off. He said the best alternative , that he had good experience with, was to fill the pin holes with epoxy and then re drill them. That repair has held up for years but I am very careful to be sure I have the strings locked up against the plate when restringing. My guess is that this is a Nashville acoustic after they moved from MI. The produce from there seems to have had some issues- new work force , etc.

I couldn't afford one. shoot, I guess it worked out. I got a harmony through the mail, and my brother borrowed it and that was that. next was a sigma that I paid off 20 bucks a month, and then there was the fender prelude that got smashed by a dumb guy. I saw the hummingbird ukulele, and it make me feel the same as when I wanted a dove. dang. I learn a lot though from your video's. Maybe one day I will find a fallen dove.

Jerry could you route down or plane down a bridge. Basically take it down to the level. Maybe take the middle of the bridge out leaving only the edge and then work out to the edge?

Jerry, could the insert in the bridge be where a tune-a-matic bridge was at one time? I had a Dove and that was the case with mine. Had an insert much like that one.
Jerry, I'm going got make a guess here. It is possible that Gibson did not put that ebony insert in the bridge. That guitar could have been originally issued with the Gibson's patented "adjustable bridge" (that metal and ceramic contraption) that they used for so many years. Lot of people did not like them and tried to fix them in various ways -- including pulling out the metal and ceramic making a rosewood or ebony (as the case might be) insert in its place? So perhaps a previous owner -- not Gibson is the "culprit"? 😀
Jerry, Helicoils do work really well ( I use them a lot ) but they aren't really designed for bolts that are going to be adjusted a lot. They are more suitable for things you bolt down and leave and don't really need to take off again often
I understand. But by the very nature of a bold it's supposed to be able to be undone II have not had good luck with Healy coils at all . I do think they would work for a one time application but how often is that the case? Not? Not very often with me
@@RosaStringWorks I use them on motorcycles for things like engine covers where they may need to be taken off a few times in the bikes life ( or sometimes never ), and they are fine for that. They also seem to work better in holes with a bottom rather than where a bolt is going to pass all the way through it. It is definitely better to drill out the old thread, tap a new one and use a larger size bolt where its possible though
you probably know that ebony is a type or persimmon .. and persimmon trees grow throughout the south.. i am wondering what the heartwood of those local persimmon trees looks like.. has anyone ever tried to use the heartwood of one of those trees to make guitar/violin parts?

Helicoils they make much better inserts now with pound down pieces that never allow the insert to move with out drilling it out.
The helicore is supposed to be installed with thread locker...lol

did you use the loctite on that helicoil i gave used them on bigblock chevy main caps drag race engines torqued to 120 ftpounds and never had one fail
Jerry, I'm sure there's a reason NOT to do this, but when I watch luthiers remove bridges, I always wonder why they don't use a router and then just scrape off the remnants. Because you need the bridge as a template for a new one?
As you said, a template.
Unless you are making a new one, of a completely different
outline and/or large enough to cover the original placement,
the template Really helps. Also, getting the peg holes properly
located is another issue.

It doesn't bring peace to the luthier to build a guitar that way
the bridge plate would come off if you dampen it with a wet sponge repeatedly before going in with heat
Possibly but it would also probably bust the thin spruce top

If it is Caleb...hey i really love Gerry's presentations but i also enjoy yours too..i liked that old Truetone electric..we had a Western Auto here in town when i was a kid and i remember all the guitars..i started learning on a Truetone when i was 10 years old. It was my cousin's guitar but he loaned it to me .i remember it had a big wide neck and a metal tailpiece...and the action was ridiculously high...my other cousin laughed when he played it and called it a bow and arrow
You can tell Jerry was never a machinist. Using a drill chuck to hold any side cutting tool is a fundamental no no. That is why they give you collets with the Dremmel.
There's more than one way to skin a cat. Did you notice that it actually worked?
